A record amount of money is on the line at the Open Championship with 156 of the world's highest quality players attempting to hoist the Claret Jug at the end of the week.
The R&A announced the payouts and prize money for the final men's major championship of the year at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, with the purse up by half a million from 2025.
The total purse is $17.75 million, and the winner will take home $3.2 million, a $100k increase from last year. The 2026 Masters tournament displayed a total purse of $22.5 million and a first place prize of $4 million.

“We've increased our prize money this year up by three-quarters of a million up to $17.75 million,” said CEO Mark Darbon, noting that half a million isn’t an incredible jump. “We are big believers in recognizing and rewarding the players. They're the icons of our sport. They have a disproportionate impact on the status and standing of the game.
“We look at prize money as part of a broader package that we offer here at The Open Championship.
“We've also increased and continued to increase our investment into the player experience, and we're very proud of the fact that we consistently get told by the players that the experience - the facilities, the services, the support - that we offer during Open Championship week sets the benchmark for the rest of golf.
“We're intent on ensuring that that continues to remain the case. Both numbers are a record for the tournament but are last compared to the other three majors.”
If more than 70 advance to the weekend, more money will be added and the prize money will decrease by $125 per qualifying place above 70 to a minimum of $39,450.
Like the U.S. Open, anyone who qualifies for the Open Championship will take home some form of cash, as Royal Birkdale is serving up $9,100 to those finishing dead last and better.
The leading 10 and ties from those who miss the cut will take home $12,900 and the next 20 will earn $10,750.
A win in the Open Championship also comes with a year in possession of the Claret Jug, a winner's medal, exemption until the age of 55 (or the next 10 Opens if the winner is 46 or older), plus a five-year exemption for the Masters, PGA Championship and U.S. Open, Players Championship and PGA Tour invitational events.
Winners also receive exemptions to three senior majors upon turning 50, with lifetimes exemptions for the Senior Open and Senior PGA Championship, as well as a one-time exemption to the U.S. Senior Open.
