Ira Parker explains A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms production delays
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker revealed major production challenges during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The HBO fantasy hit’s second season faced severe weather disruptions while filming in Spain’s Canary Islands. Parker described the experience in blunt terms during the wide-ranging conversation.
Parker explained that the production chose Spain for its “heat and dryness,” as the second novella takes place during a “drought.” However, the location suffered unprecedented flooding that derailed the shooting schedule. “The place we chose to shoot our drought in got a once-in-a-100-year storm,” Parker said. He added that the crew faced repeated shutdowns due to “national emergencies” and “flooding” at filming locations.

The stop-and-start nature of production made it difficult to establish a consistent workflow. “There’s been so much stopping and starting that it’s been hard to get into a real cadence,” Parker noted. He also acknowledged that filming has stretched beyond expectations. “This has been going on too long for a six-episode season, and we still have three more weeks of shooting,” he said.
Despite these setbacks, Parker confirmed that the show still expects to premiere in the first half of next year. He credited his lead actors with helping ease other production pressures this time around. “Peter and Dexter are a year more experienced and have their thing down,” Parker said. Their growth helped the team avoid some early struggles from the debut season.
The first season currently holds nine Emmy nominations, including outstanding drama series. Parker expressed gratitude for the recognition while candidly summarizing his overall experience with season two. “Season two has been a f—ing b—ard,” he stated.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is expected to premiere in 2027 on HBO.
