The proposed merger between Paramountand Warner Bros. Discovery has encountered another legal setback. A federal court has once again delayed the companies’ ability to complete the transaction, extending the existing restrictions. The latest ruling pushes the merger timeline back further.

Judge extends stay order on Paramount and Warner Bros. deal by two weeks

The legal battle over the proposed Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger will continue for at least another two weeks as a federal judge has decided to keep temporary restrictions in place.

According to Deadline, U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín extended a temporary restraining order to allow additional time for the case to move through the next phase of litigation. In a written order, the judge stated that she “finds good cause to extend the TRO on multiple grounds, including the need to resolve two preliminary injunction motions, the parties’ disputes regarding the schedule and the proposed format of the preliminary injunction hearing, and Defendants’ stated willingness to abide by the terms of the TRO for some weeks into the future.”

The extension comes ahead of a key hearing that will determine whether the court should issue a preliminary injunction against the merger. If granted, such an injunction could prevent Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery from completing the transaction for a much longer period. Paramount has requested that the court conduct a three-day evidentiary hearing before reaching that decision.

Judge Martínez-Olguín also directed Paramount, the coalition of 12 state attorneys general challenging the merger, and the other involved parties to meet and attempt to agree on a schedule for the case. A joint report summarizing those discussions is expected to be submitted on July 24.

The hearing on the preliminary injunction remains scheduled for August 3, 2026. Until the court rules on that request, the temporary restraining order will remain in effect, preventing the companies from closing the merger before August 17.
