Every generation gets the teen sex comedy it deserves, and for millennials, that was *American Pie** *(1999). The film about four guy friends who make a pact to lose their virginities before prom night had a simple enough premise, but this raunchy rom-com deviated from genre norms by giving its female characters more sexual autonomy than they enjoyed in films like *Porky*’s (1981) or *Weird Science* (1985). As EW’s writer notes in the review, “It reflects a major shift in contemporary teen culture that the girls in *American Pie* are as hip to sex as the boys.”

Universal Pictures waited until after July 4 — presumably giving Americans a moment to digest their patriotic helping of apple pie — before releasing the film in theaters on July 9, 1999. The movie scored at the box office, prompting a decade’s worth of sequels, including *American Pie 2* (2001), *American Wedding* (2003), and *American Reunion* (2012).

As *American Pie* celebrates its 27th birthday, here’s an update on where the comedy’s stars are today.**

Jason Biggs (Jim)

A child actor from New Jersey, Jason Biggs had already enjoyed a stint on Broadway and secured a Daytime Emmy nomination for the soap opera *As the World Turns* when he was cast as the sex-obsessed Jim in *American Pie*.

He followed his breakout role with a string of comedies, including *Loser *(2000)*,* *Boys and Girls* (2000)*,* *Saving Silverman* (2001) — and, like most of the original cast members — the *American Pie* sequels.

Ahead of *American Reunion*‘s release, Biggs told EW about the special bond among the cast. “No matter what kind of paths we’ve taken since, and no matter how long we go without speaking or seeing each other, it’s like we get back and there’s this energy that’s just fantastic,” he said.

Biggs also acted on *The Good Wife*, voiced Leonardo on *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, *and was cast on *Orange Is the New Black* as main character Piper’s fiancé, Larry. Post-*OITNB*, Biggs briefly starred on the sitcom *Outmatched*, about a couple whose kids are smarter than they are. (A few members of the *American Pie* family dropped by to guest-star.) He hosted a short-lived reality/game show series in 2021 called *Jason Biggs’ Cash at Your Door*, and starred alongside Heather Graham and Brandy in the 2023 holiday movie *Best. Christmas. Ever.*

Biggs is open about his struggles with substance abuse; he has been sober since 2017. In May 2026, Biggs announced his separation from writer and actress Jenny Mollen, his wife of 18 years. The couple shares two sons, Sid and Lazlo.

Eugene Levy‘s fumbling birds and the bees talks comprise some of the funniest moments of *American Pie* — and most of them were improvised.

Before *Pie*, Levy was already a veteran comic actor with a list of credits that began with the star-studded 1972 Toronto production of the musical *Godspell, *and a residency with the Canadian branch of the Second City improv comedy troupe.

When his peers John Candy and Martin Short pivoted to the big screen, Levy appeared in supporting comic roles in their films *Splash* (1984) and *Father of the Bride* (1991)*.* He also enjoyed a scene-stealing role as a stern sales clerk in the 2001 John Cusack movie *Serendipity,* and has since done voice-over work in movies like *Finding Dory* (2016) and *Over the Hedge *(2006).

Levy’s most frequent scene partner was the late, great Catherine O’Hara. The pair appeared — often as spouses — in Christopher Guest mockumentary productions like *Waiting for Guffman* (1996), *Best in Show* (2000), and *A Mighty Wind* (2003). In 2015, the pair began a six-season stint as Johnny and Moira Rose on *Schitt’s Creek*. The cast swept the 2020 Emmys, with Levy winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series 37 years after he won for *Second City Television*. In 2024, he joined Short for a six-episode arc on *Only Murders in the Building*.

*Schitt’s Creek* was a family affair for Levy, who co-created the show with his son, Dan. The two played father and son on screen as well. Meanwhile, Levy’s daughter, Sarah, also appeared on the series as Twyla, a waitress at the town’s only restaurant. Levy has been married to his wife, screenwriter and producer Deborah Divine, since 1977.

Natasha Lyonne (Jessica)

Natasha Lyonne‘s street-smart Jessica, who counsels pals Vicky, Kevin, and Finch on their relationship troubles, was a definite precursor to the world-weary characters she later portrayed on prestige series like Netflix’s *Russian Doll* and Peacock’s *Poker Face*.

Another former child star, Lyonne kept busy throughout the 1990s with films like Woody Allen’s *Everyone Says I Love You *(1996)*, *and comedies like* Slums of Beverly Hills *(1998), *Detroit Rock City* (1999), and *But I’m a Cheerleader* (1999)*.*

In 2013, Lyonne joined her *Pie* costar Jason Biggs in the cast of the original Netflix series *Orange Is the New Black*, earning her first Emmy nomination for her performance as Nicky Nichols. She has since received four more for her work on *Russian Doll *and *Poker Face.* You can also hear her signature vocals on animated projects like *Big Mouth* and *DC League of Super-Pets *(2022). She’s even joined the MCU, appearing in *The Fantastic Four: First Steps* (2025).

Lyonne began dating Fred Armisen in 2014, though they split in 2022. After a public addiction journey in the early 2000s, Lyonne was sober for two decades before sharing that she relapsed in 2026. “Recovery is a lifelong process. Anyone out there struggling, remember you’re not alone,” she wrote in a since-deleted post on X.

Band geek Michelle, played by a scene-stealing Alyson Hannigan, turns out to be much more exciting than Jim could have predicted when he first asks her to prom.

Hannigan seems to have nothing but affection for the teen franchise, sharing on *The Kelly Clarkson Show* in 2020 that it’s “lovely to be associated with a movie people still know.” An established child star, Hannigan already had a gig starring as Willow on *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* when *American Pie *premiered. She remained a central cast member for all seven seasons, wrapping with the show in 2003.

She switched from supernatural to sitcom for her next long-running series, *How I Met Your Mother*. Hannigan played Lily Aldrin, a wannabe artist and partner to Jason Segel’s Marshall, for the show’s nine-season run. Along the way, she appeared in movies like *Love, Wedding, Marriage* (2011) and performed voice-over work for *Robot Chicken*, *American Dad!*, and more. She voiced the mom on Disney Junior’s *Fancy Nancy *and in 2023, she competed on ABC’s* Dancing With the Stars. *She is set to star in the upcoming lesbian rom-com, *Dodie & Cheryl Get Hitched*, alongside Mira Sorvino.

Hannigan married her *Buffy* and *HIMYM* costar Alexis Denisof, and the pair have two children.

Mena Suvari (Heather)

While Mena Suvari‘s role as the virginal choir girl Heather (who eventually wins Oz’s heart) was certainly noteworthy, it was not her biggest screen moment of 1999. That distinction belongs to her star-making turn as the cheerleader object of middle-aged Kevin Spacey’s desires in the Oscar-winning *American Beauty*.

She followed those critical and commercial successes by starring alongside her *American Pie* costar Jason Biggs in *Loser*, and guest-starring as Edie on Alan Ball’s HBO series *Six Feet Under*.

Suvari enjoyed several more movie roles during the 2000s, including the crime comedy *Sugar & Spice *(2001)*, Beauty Shop* (2005) with Queen Latifah and Alicia Silverstone, and *Domino* (2005) with Keira Knightley*. *Students of the macabre may also recognize Suvari from *American Horror Story*, where she plays the Black Dahlia in seasons *Murder House *and *Apocalypse *and is slated to reprise her role in the upcoming 13th season. In 2024, she appeared as Ronald Reagan’s first wife, Jane Wyman, in the biographical film *Reagan*, starring Dennis Quaid.

Suvari married set designer Michael Hope in 2018. They have one child.

Chris Klein (Oz)

Director Alexander Payne discovered Chris Klein in Nebraska when he was scouting actors for his high school drama *Election* (1999). Klein subsequently made his film debut in the comedy, starring alongside Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick as Tracy Flick’s kind but dim-witted, football-playing rival for student body president.

*American Pie *was only Klein’s second movie, but he quickly embarked on a solid cinematic career, appearing in *We Were Soldiers* (2002)*, Rollerball* (2002)*, *and as former nerd Dusty Dinkleman in the underrated Ryan Reynolds comedy *Just Friends* (2005)*.*

Klein entered rehab for alcohol addiction in 2010. “It got to the point where I was a fragile shadow of the young man that came into this business,” he told PEOPLE in 2012 when he was 19 months sober. “Today, I’m the luckiest guy alive.”

He’s appeared on the TV series *Wilfred*, in the 2018 rom-com *The Competition *with Thora Birch, and in 2019’s* Benchwarmers 2: Breaking Balls.* After so many years as the good guy, Klein is leaning into his dark side, taking on roles like the big bad Cicada on CW’s *The Flash,* and as JoAnna Garcia Swisher’s unfaithful ex-husband on the Netflix series *Sweet Magnolias*.

Klein was engaged to Katie Holmes for two years in the early-2000s. He married travel agent Laina Rose Thyfault in 2015. The couple has two children.

Jason Biggs finally talked to his son about his infamous 'American Pie' scene: 'We want to get ahead of this'

Thomas Ian Nicholas was an experienced child actor before *American Pie,* starring in films like *Rookie of the Year* (1993) and *A Kid in King Arthur’s Court *(1995)*.* Post-*Pie*, Nicholas appeared as Claudia’s boyfriend, Todd, on *Party of Five**,* and in 2002, he acted in films like *Halloween: Resurrection* and *The Rules of Attraction.*

In the 2010s, Nicholas shifted to more biographical content, playing Abbie Hoffman in *The Chicago 8 *(2011)*,* a young Walt Disney in *Walt Before Mickey *(2015)*,* and Martin Scorsese in James Franco’s *Zeroville *(2019). He also appeared in the Nicole Holofcener film *Please Give* (2010), starred in the 2020 film *Adverse*, and was featured in several episodes of the short-lived hospital drama *Red Band Society.*

A musician in his spare time, Nicholas has self-released four studio albums between 2008 and 2024. He is divorced from musician DJ Colette, and the pair shares two children, one of whom, Nolan River, has appeared on the TV series *New Girl* and in the 2021 M. Night Shyamalan movie *Old*.

Tara Reid (Vicky)

Like most of the female characters in *American Pie, *Tara Reid‘s Vicky is wiser than her male counterpart — in this case, her boyfriend, Kevin.

Another former child actor, Reid made a name for herself in the late-‘90s, first as Bunny in the Coen brothers’ classic *The Big Lebowski* (1998), and later in the salacious teen drama *Cruel Intentions* (1999)*.*

*American Pie* shot Reid straight to stardom, and her personal life soon eclipsed her professional one. She was known for the company she kept, dating MTV host Carson Daly, and hanging with other members of Young Hollywood, including Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.

Her social life earned her a short-lived reality show, *Taradise*, on E!. Reid told *Variety* in 2022, “There was a part of me that kind of got circled in that circle… [But] I never got arrested, never did a sex tape, never did anything really wrong except have a good time.”

Aside from *American Pie,* Reid is best known for starring in the six *Sharknado* movies, and her multi-episode arc on *Scrubs*. These days, her biggest onscreen appearances are as herself: She’s made cameos on *The Boy*s, *Ghosts*, and *Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test*.

Seann William Scott (Stifler)

Seann William Scott was also a relative newbie to the movie industry when he was cast as Stifler, the guy that somehow manages to make every situation more painful and awkward.

Scott quickly capitalized on his *American Pie* success with work in the horror film *Final Destination* (2000)*,* sci-fi comedy *Evolution *(2001), and two hangout comedies released in 2000, *Road Trip* and *Dude, Where’s My Car?*.

After playing Bo in *The Dukes of Hazzard* (2005), serving as Billy Bob Thornton’s foil in *Mr. Woodcock *(2007)*, *and voicing Crash in the *Ice Age* movies, Scott eventually found his way to TV, stepping in after Clayne Crawford was ousted from the *Lethal Weapon *series. He later portrayed a priest in the Fox small-town mockumentary series *Welcome to Flatch. *In 2025, he appeared in five episodes of* The Righteous Gemstones, *and starred alongside Tim Allen on the ABC sitcom* Shifting Gears.*

He was married to interior designer Olivia Korenberg for five years before the couple divorced in 2024. They share one child.

Jennifer Coolidge (Stifler’s Mom)

Stifler’s mom left quite an impression considering her limited screen time. Jennifer Coolidge showed up at the end of the film to pull a Mrs. Robinson and corrupt nice guy Finch. She walked away from the film with a thriving movie career.

Coolidge’s first credit is a 1993 episode of *Seinfeld*, but it was her work in *American Pie *that made her one of comedy’s go-to character actresses in the 2000s. She played iconic roles like Paulette in *Legally Blonde* (2001) and the wicked but hilarious stepmother in Hilary Duff’s *A Cinderella Story* (2004). She also became a favorite of director Christopher Guest, appearing in the mockumentaries *Best in Show *and* A Mighty Wind *alongside Eugene Levy.

Coolidge was a series regular on *2 Broke Girls* and *The Secret Life of the American Teenager, *and made guest appearances on shows like *Friends, Party Down,* and* Sex and the City. *She also worked in voice-over for projects like *Gravity Falls*, *Fish Hooks*, and the *Alvin and the Chipmunks* franchise.

Of course, nothing imprinted Coolidge onto our collective consciousness like her role as Tanya on Mike White’s smash-hit HBO series, *The White Lotus**. *She won a slew of awards, including two Emmys, and was named one of EW’s Entertainers of the Year in 2022 for her work playing the ill-fated heiress.

Coolidge also acted in the Jennifer Lopez action comedy *Shotgun Wedding* (2022), the blockbuster *A Minecraft Movie* (2025), and the Netflix series *The Watcher*. And good news, Paulette fans: She will return in the upcoming *Legally Blonde 3*.

Shannon Elizabeth owned the role of Nadia, a foreign exchange student who has a sexually-charged encounter with Jim that is accidentally broadcast to the whole school. (Obviously, such a “comedic” setup would not fly nowadays, nor should it have then.)

Before *Pie*, Elizabeth was a model whose credits included a few guest spots on shows like *Step by Step* and *Pacific Blue.* She followed *Pie* with the horror spoof *Scary Movie* (2000), the sex comedy *Tomcats* (2001)*,* and the Kevin Smith movies *Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back* (2001) and *Jay and Silent Bob Reboot* (2019). Elizabeth played one of the American “hot girls” in *Love Actually*, was a member of the main cast of *Cuts*, and had a multi-episode arc on* That ‘70s Show*.

Elizabeth is a gifted dancer who secured sixth place on season 6 of *Dancing With the Stars,* and a professional poker player with multiple World Series plays under her belt. In 2001, she started an animal rights organization called Animal Avengers (now the Shannon Elizabeth Foundation), which focuses on animal cruelty and conservation.

Elizabeth was previously married to actor and fellow poker player Joseph D. Reitman. She married Simon Borchert in 2021. The two finalized their divorce in 2026, and she joined OnlyFans.

Eddie Kaye Thomas (Finch)

Wise beyond his years, Finch was the most sophisticated of the four *American Pie *friends, charming Stifler’s Mom with his knowledge of single malt scotch.

Afterward, actor Eddie Kaye Thomas stayed in the gross-out comedy lane with a role in Tom Green’s *Freddy Got Fingered* (2001). He also appeared in the *Harold & Kumar* movies with his* American Pie* costar John Cho (a.k.a. “MILF guy #2”).

Thomas starred in the CBS series *Scorpion* for four seasons, portraying one of the super geniuses hired by the U.S. government to help prevent computer crimes. You can hear him in 100-plus episodes of *American Dad!, *where he voices Barry Robinson. Or you can spot him in season 5 of *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel* alongside Midge, playing one of the writers for *The Gordon Ford Show.*

Chris Owen (Sherman)

Chuck “Sherminator” Sherman’s success with the ladies kicks off the boys’ quest to lose their virginities — until it’s revealed at prom that Sherman is also a virgin.

Another former child actor, Chris Owen showed up in *American Pie* with a solid résumé, having already appeared in movies like *Angus *(1995), *Major Payne* (1995), and *Black Sheep *(1996)*.* He acted in a run of successful teen comedies in the late-‘90s, including *Can’t Hardly Wait* (1998) and *She’s All That* (1999)*,* and played one of the “rocket boys” in *October Sky* (1999).

Owen guest-starred on series like *Monk* and *The Mentalist*, and appeared in the 2007 Stephen King movie *The Mist. *In 2018, he joined the final installment of the *Sharknado* series,* The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time*, with *Pie* costar Tara Reid. He has since appeared in movies like *Off-Time* (2022), *The Epidemic* (2024), and *Money Game* (2024).
