President Trump has blamed the appearance of swathes of dead grass at the National Mall on “vandals.”

The accusation comes just weeks after the president began to allege that algae blooms and peeling pool lining in the waters of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool were the result of vandalism.

On Truth Social, Trump shared an aerial image of the grass at the National Mall which appeared to have large, dead patches in the same area that he held his July 4 celebration.

“Look what VANDALS did to the grass connecting the vandalized World War II Monument and the vandalized Reflecting Pool, which will be opened again, and better than ever, shortly,” Trump wrote on Sunday night. “Anybody who thinks the Reflecting Pool wasn’t vandalized should go back to Law School!”

The spot, which is near Washington, D.C.’s World War II Memorial, played host to more than 400,000 people ahead of his July 4 speech, Trump has previously claimed.

Footage from a livestreaming webcam taken during the July 4 celebrations and reviewed by The showed a bandstand and a seating area covering the lawn that Trump says has been vandalized.

Photographs taken by the publication also showed workers removing the structures in the days after the speech, with brown grass being revealed under each.

Trump has previously accused vandals of causing damage around Washington, D.C., most notoriously with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which has been the site of major renovations.

The president announced plans to have the pool refurbished and repainted an “American-flag blue” earlier this year.

However, after the pool was refilled, bright green algae blooms quickly began appearing in the water. The pool’s lining also began to peel away, with tourists spotting chunks of the lining floating on the water’s surface.

Trump quickly began suggesting that vandals had slashed the pool lining and that they had even poured chemicals into the water.

Amid the controversy, former Olympic canoeist David Hearn was arrested for allegedly vandalizing the pool, only for the charges against him to be dropped.

Trump later lashed out at Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, after she moved to drop charges against Hearn.

“I was disappointed in Jeanine Pirro. Really disappointed with Jeanine Pirro,” he told reporters in the Oval Office. “She folded like an umbrella.”

Trump added, “I think she choked, because the judge was really vicious.”

A court filing to dismiss the charges states that the blue sealant began to peel “almost immediately” after work on the pool was finished in June.

The filing, from Pirro’s office, stated that the “damage was the result of a botched installation and not vandalism.”

Trump has also complained about the numbers “86 47” appearing in the grass near the National Mall, which he cited while criticizing Pirro’s decision on Truth Social.

“To me, it was a pure case of VANDALISM, that included the grass, which had a big 86 47 emblazoned in giant letters on it, and other elements of the surrounding area,” Trump claimed.

In the spring of 1985, on a sound stage at Jacob Street Studios in Bermondsey, a young actor named Alex King knelt on the floor, closed his eyes and let a 7ft villain take off his head. He was smiling as the blade came down.

It was the climax of an ambitious fight sequence for Highlander, director Russell Mulcahy’s 1986 action-fantasy starring French-American actor Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish warrior fighting to save humanity by defeating the Russian Kurgan (Clancy Brown), with help from Sean Connery as his Egyptian mentor. Accents were negotiable, even if the swordplay wasn’t.

Everyone who saw the footage, including the film’s fight choreographer, legendary Olympic fencer-turned-swordmaster Bob Anderson, who doubled for Darth Vader in lightsaber duels, was delighted. Then the sequence was cut from the film entirely, but nobody told King. His name was never mentioned in any promotional materials, as if he’d never existed.

The mystery of the missing immortal – only known as Yung Dol Kim – struck me when I came to write my 2020 book on Highlander. Grainy photos proved the sequence had been filmed, but the footage had supposedly been lost in a fire. None of the filmmakers could recall who played the character. Then, in 2024, a comment on a YouTube video led me to Alex King. “I think they were embarrassed,” he says today of the decision to remove his fight sequence. “How do you tell a guy that you’ve cut him out because his sequence is too good?”

Too good is not false modesty. Anderson had warned that the choreography risked overshadowing everything around it, including scenes with Lambert, who was fit and enthusiastic, but, despite being trained by Team GB Olympic fencing coach Ziemek Wojciechowski, was not a fencer. King had taken up judo, karate and fencing in his teens, and by the time he got to drama school, he was already a double black belt and a regional level-4 fencing instructor.

“I asked Bob [Anderson] which school the unit’s stuntmen had fenced at, and he told me they were all proud graduates of ‘the bish-bash-bosh school of fencing’,” says King. At 69, he lives quietly in his London flat – he’s “reclusive” by his own admission – is a teetotal vegetarian, and trains his body and voice daily. Though unfailingly courteous, he’s also refreshingly blunt.

His route to Highlander began far from the film business. He arrived in England aged 10, into a country he remembers as gripped by racial violence. “There was a pastime in Britain called ‘P--i bashing’. Skinheads would cruise around the streets in cars, looking for brown men and women to attack.” His family kept a fire extinguisher in the front room in case someone put lighter fluid through the letterbox and set it alight. On TV, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum served up caricatures, while white actors browned up for leading roles. His parents’ answer was martial arts: karate, judo, fencing, gymnastics. Self-defence became a craft.

King enrolled at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 1980. He was a mature student who had already served in the Armed Forces. But actors’ union Equity ran a closed shop he describes as discriminatory by design: provisional theatres handed out two membership cards a year, almost always to white actors, claims King. “Unless it was a specified Asian part, you didn’t get a look in.” He earned his at last as the soothsayer in Julius Caesar at Derby Playhouse.

For many years he performed under the name Sumar Khan, dropping it in favour of Alex King after people wrongly assumed he was Muslim rather than Indian, along with the consequential racism that assumption brought. His first film break, on the 1983 Bond pictureOctopussy, came only because stunt director Bob Simmons, Sean Connery’s old double, kept telling him to come back until the director relented.

It was Anderson who brought King to Highlander, recommending him for the role of an immortal weary of eternity. The part had first gone to David Yip, of The Chinese Detective fame, who was signed, fitted for costumes, then departed the production, leaving a security guard’s uniform several sizes too small. “His jacket wouldn’t fit me. I couldn’t even get my arm in his sleeve,” King recalls, which meant working without padding. “I just had to take the bruising.”

At the studio, King and Anderson built a fight unlike anything else in the film. They had him wield two swords against Brown’s single blade, with kicks and acrobatic dives. One move sent him hurtling backwards over a bank of computers, only to dive back into frame, grab both hilts and fight on. The sequence’s most radical element was its ending. Yung Dol Kim doesn’t lose; he simply stops. After centuries, he has had enough and chooses to die, kneeling before the Kurgan. “I wanted to go from an expression of violent combat to the serene face of a man who has, Buddha-like, embraced his death.”

Despite producing a sequence he was proud of, there was no further contact from the Highlander production team. “I never heard from Russell [Mulcahy] or the producers. I didn’t even get an invite to the crew screening.” It was then he realised he’d been cut from the film, though at 28, he felt he was “too young and inexperienced” to complain. Today, he admits he’s “a little p-----d off with it,” adding it was “nothing personal” from the filmmakers.

Nonetheless, he kept working: acting alongside Timothy Dalton in 1987’s The Living Daylights, enjoying a stint on EastEnders, teaching combat at Rada. All the while, he was called a liar whenever he claimed he had been part of the Highlander cast.

Everything changed when King’s wife was killed in a car accident in 1991. “The one thing I loved in my life was gone,” he says. He gave almost all of his possessions away and drove up into the hills above Oxford, feeling the calm acceptance he had brought to Yung Dol Kim as he then tried to end his life. “I don’t think you can truly begin to live until you’ve accepted your eventual death.” He was saved by a German shepherd that raced up to his car, its owner close behind, trying to open the door. He remembers coming round with the dog licking his face, as if to say, “Wake up you fool.”

Today, he always carries dog biscuits with him, and means to leave whatever he has to animal charities. “I hope I can lie on my deathbed cuddling dogs. I hope they lead me over the Rainbow Bridge.”

It was after this incident that he says he heard his wife chiding him: “I didn’t know you were a coward, Alex. Sometimes it takes more courage to live than to die.”He spent time in the Canadian Rockies, keeping a promise to her to complete his lifelong study of Shakespeare, whose language and verse he would later teach at Hollywood’s Estelle Harman Actors Workshop. While in Canada, he had one more brush with Highlander, when Anderson invited him to the Vancouver set of the TV spin-off starring Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod.

Back in the UK, his career stalled. He turned down an invitation to create a sitcom similar to Goodness Gracious Me, supposedly designed to “represent Indians”, after realising that what was required was “little more than racial ridicule disguised as humour. I would have been betraying my Indian community for a little fame and a few pieces of silver.” The breaking point came at an audition for a British soap opera, where he was asked to affect a comic Indian accent. He walked away from the industry. “It was a matter of dignity.”

Highlander turns 40 this year, with a big-screen reboot starring Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe on the way. In addition, I’ve been afforded the chance to retell the story of Highlander in a new book, this time recognising Alex King as a vital part of the story. “Though it was disappointing to lose my fight scene, preparing for the role required me to confront and reconcile myself with my ultimate destruction. For that, I will be eternally grateful to Highlander.”

King admits he’s tempted to return to acting. The industry that shut him out has changed, not as much as he’d like, but enough. He reckons he can still out-fence any stuntman in the country. With any earnings, he’d “love to buy some land in the country and set up an animal sanctuary. Every penny I make will go towards them”. Four decades after he knelt on a sound stage and smiled, Alex King is perhaps not quite finished.

In one photo, Victoria wore a plunging black lace slip dress with a totally see-through long skirt that featured pink and green floral embroidery. She wore her hair in a long, low ponytail and carried a black woven clutch. Meanwhile, David, wore a white T-shirt, khaki pants, and slung a butter yellow sweater around his shoulders.

“Back in Portofino where we began ♥️ in 1997 x I love you @davidbeckham,” she wrote in the caption.

The couple, along with their daughter Harper and their son Romeo, have been enjoying a relaxing trip around Europe this summer. Earlier this week, they were spotted on a yacht, where Victoria wore a series of bikinis. A few days earlier, Victoria wore a nude bikini while the family soaked up the sun in Saint-Tropez. And before that, she was seen in a plunging sundress while they enjoying Ibiza.

Victoria and David first visited Portofino together in 1997 in the early days of their relationship. In fact, it was the place where they first went public with their relationship. “I remember it so clearly: how blue the sky was, how the crisp white sheets smelled. It felt like nobody else existed but me and him,” she told Vogue.

This year, Victoria even launched Portofino ‘97, a fragrance inspired by the trip. “I love to put on fragrance right when I get out of the bath, before I get in bed,” she said. “David wears Portofino as well, and he does the same. And so I love that when I roll over in the night, I can smell my Portofino fragrance where he’s sleeping, as well.”

Nicole Kidman says she’s had to learn how to embrace an uncertain future in the year following her highly-publicized split from Keith Urban. At first, she admits during a wide-ranging new interview with British Vogue, the prospect felt overwhelming.

“There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable,” Kidman reflects, “which is exposing.”

“And then at the same time [I’m] going, ‘Well, I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can go forward with an enormous amount of hope,” she continues.

Their breakup came as a shock to fans, since Urban and Kidman had long been one of country music’s most beloved couples. Over the first year since their split, rumors cropped up that both members of the ex-couple were dating other people, though most were wholly unsubstantiated.

Since their divorce, both Kidman and Urban have sent a positive message or two to each other on social media. Urban appeared to wish Kidman a happy birthday in June, and days later, she mentioned him in a Father’s Day post.

Mel Gibson has sparked fears he may be too old for another full-throttle action comeback after vowing to resurrect Lethal Weapon at 70 – insisting the long-delayed fifth installment can still deliver the energy of a major action movie.

RadarOnline.com can reveal the Hollywood veteran remains committed to Lethal Weapon 5, revealing that he and screenwriter Richard Wenk completed a script after original franchise director Richard Donner died aged 91 in 2021.

Gibson, who plays volatile LAPD officer Martin Riggs in the buddy cop franchise, could also direct the movie, which would bring back an older Riggs alongside Danny Glover's Roger Murtaugh.

A source close to the project exclusively told Radar: "There are fans who would love to see Mel back as Riggs, but there are also fears that at 70 he is simply too old to throw himself back into the kind of action that made Lethal Weapon famous. Nobody wants him getting hurt trying to prove he can still do what he did decades ago."

And a Hollywood production insider warned: "The concern is whether audiences really want to see Mel doing action at this age. The plan is clearly to acknowledge that these characters are older rather than pretend time has stood still, but it is easy for a man of his age to get injured trying to do action."

'Lethal Weapon 5' Faces Production Trouble

Speaking to Collider, Gibson said about Lethal Weapon 5: "Donner realised it. I think he did all of those films, and sadly he's passed away. But he sort of knew what he had, and Shane Black wrote a good script.

"It was timely, you know. It was '80s. We were used to these tough guys on film who kind of had it all together, but they were tough and two-dimensional in a lot of ways.

"So this one was better because the main protagonists in the story both had kind of vulnerabilities, and one was crazy, and the other was scared, and it went a little deeper than the usual action flick."

Gibson, also famed for Mad Max and his Oscar-winning Braveheart, admitted the fifth film in the Lethal Weapon series remains trapped in "industrial film h---" despite the completed screenplay.

He said: "There were good things about each one, but as you say, they tend to get diluted out there a lot.

"And, you know, Donner, when he was 90 years old, was working on the fifth, and of course he passed away in the middle. So I got together with the writer, and we completed it thinking, 'What would Donner do?'

"That's what we were thinking in the room, and I think that the fifth script is better than all the others. But it's tied up in some kind of industrial film h-ll that you can't extract it from to make it."

'Lethal Weapon' Characters Face Low-Tech Reality

Gibson also said the story would recognize that Riggs and Murtaugh have aged rather than attempting to recreate their younger characters.

He added: "The characters are quite different. They're older. One's retired. The other one's on a desk job. He's putting on too much weight, and it's low-tech. It doesn't get into the big explosions and all this sort of stuff.

"But it still has the energy and, I think, drive of a big action film. Like, let's say, for instance, Apocalypto."

Gibson also revealed Donner personally asked him to take control of the franchise if he died.

"Donner, God rest his soul, he said to me in this deep voice, he said, 'Hey kid, if I drop off the perch, you'll take this over, won't you?'" Gibson recalled.

"I said, 'Shut up! You're not going anywhere.' And of course he did."

Cindy Crawford’s daughter, Kaia Gerber,is looking back on her allegedly haunting childhood — literally.

“My mom gave me holy water to go to set,” Gerber, 24, began during a Friday, August 14, interview on the “Mitch Churi Chat Show,” referring to her stint on American Horror Story season 10. “She was like, ‘I don’t want you to get possessed.’ I was told I was possessed as a child.”

Kaia, the daughter of supermodel Crawford, 60, and husband Rande Gerber, further claimed that she was “haunted [her] whole life.” (Crawford and Rande, 64, also share son Presley, 27.)

“I do feel I attract beings from other dimensions in a very casual and chill way,” Kaia quipped, alleging that she “actually did” have an exorcism to ward off alleged evil spirits. “Do you know how they did the exorcism? They played a didgeridoo all over me! That’s how they did the exorcism. … That actually did happen. I’ve never talked about it, but it actually did happen.”

Kaia added, “I’m all healed.”

Kaia, who did not further address her apparent childhood possession, has since followed in her mom’s footsteps in Hollywood. After finding her own success as a model, Kaia made the leap to acting with roles in Palm Royale and Ryan Murphy’s AHS and The Shards.

“Fame was something that I was born into, so I didn’t experience what it was like to become famous,” Kaia told Voguein a profile published earlier this month. “I, kind of, thought that my way of being raised was the most anonymous it could get under the circumstances, and then I met Homer [Gere]. Like, there are no photos of him as a child online, whereas my entire childhood and teenage years are on the internet. I can only imagine. I’m 24 but…very interviewed.”

Homer, Kaia’s costar in The Shards, is the son of exes Richard Gere and Carey Lowell. (Richard, 76, was famously married to Crawford from 1991 to 1995.)

“Twenty minutes into knowing each other, I was like, ‘Should we just acknowledge the fact that our parents were married?’” Homer, 26, recalled to Vogueof meeting Kaia on set of The Shards. “She was like, ‘Yeah. Cool.’ And that was it.”

As for Kaia, she immediately noted how similar Homer was to his character.

“I think Homer has Robert’s charisma without his cruelty. I looked around [at the cast when we met], and I said to the group, ‘You guys are all so much like your characters. That’s so interesting, since I’m nothing like mine,’” she said. “They all looked at me, and they go, ‘Hmm. No, I don’t think you’re the exception.’ Susan is a lot more like me than I want to admit.”

Nearly the entire original Rent cast reunited to celebrate the musical’s 30th anniversary at The Festival in New York

The cast reflected on Jonathan Larson’s legacy and celebrated the musical’s enduring message while also sharing their appreciation for the community that has embraced Rent for decades

They also performed iconic songs from Rent, including “Seasons of Love” and “La Vie Bohème”

Season of love? Try decades of love!

Nearly the entire original Broadway cast of Rent reunited Saturday, Aug. 15, for an emotional celebration of the 30th anniversary of the groundbreaking Jonathan Larson musical at The Festival, the new three-day musical theater gathering taking place at Hutton Brickyards Riverfront Hotel + Venue in Kingston, N.Y.

Thirteen of the 15 members of the original company took part in the reunion: Adam Pascal (Roger Davis), Anthony Rapp (Mark Cohen), Taye Diggs (Benjamin Coffin III), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Mimi Márquez), Fredi Walker-Browne (Joanne Jefferson), Wilson Jermaine Heredia (Angel Dumott Schunard), Byron Utley (Mr. Jefferson), Aiko Nakasone (Alexi Darling), Gilles Chiasson (Steve), Gwen Stewart (Mrs. Jefferson and the “Seasons of Love” soloist), Kristen Lee Kelly (Mark’s mom), Rodney Hicks (Paul) and Timothy Britten Parker (Gordon).

The only two original cast members absent were Idina Menzel, who originated the role of Maureen Johnson and was attending Disney’s D23 festivities, and Jesse L. Martin, the original Tom Collins, who was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict.

But their roles weren’t left entirely unfilled. Tony Award winner Lauren Patten stepped in for Menzel to join Walker-Browne for Maureen and Joanne’s fiery duet “Take Me or Leave Me,” while Hicks stepped into Collins’ shoes for the reunion performance.

And what a reunion it was.

Thousands of fans packed into The Festival’s Broadway Direct Stage for what had become one of the most anticipated events of the weekend. Many arrived wearing Rent shirts and other memorabilia, while at least one particularly dedicated attendee paid tribute to Angel by dressing in the character’s iconic Santa-inspired ensemble.

For the cast, the afternoon offered a chance to look back at the show that changed their lives — and Broadway along with it.

Together, they reminisced about creating Rent, shared memories of working with Larson and reflected on the musical’s lasting impact three decades after it first opened at New York Theatre Workshop in 1996 before transferring to Broadway.

Larson famously died unexpectedly at age 35 on Jan. 25, 1996, the night before Rent was scheduled to have its first preview Off-Broadway. He would never see the phenomenon his work became.

Inspired loosely by Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème, Rent followed a group of young artists struggling to create lives for themselves in New York City’s East Village amid the HIV/AIDS crisis. Its rock score and frank depictions of sexuality, addiction, poverty and disease helped usher in a new era of musical theater.

The show went on to win four Tony Awards, including best musical, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for drama, and ran for more than 12 years on Broadway.

On Saturday, however, its original cast seemed less interested in listing the accolades than celebrating the community that has kept Larson’s work alive.

The performers repeatedly expressed their gratitude to the generations of fans who have embraced the show and its messages over the past three decades, returning again and again to the Larson mantras that have become embedded in musical theater history: “No day but today” and, fittingly for an afternoon spent looking back, measuring a life in love.

There was plenty of love in the room — and music. The company revisited selections from throughout Larson’s score, performing “Rent,” “La Vie Bohème,” “Out Tonight,” “Take Me or Leave Me,” “I’ll Cover You,” “You’ll See,” “Another Day” and “Finale B,” among other favorites.

Of course, remembering songs first performed three decades ago occasionally proved to be its own adventure.

Diggs, who originated the role of Benny, jokingly admitted early in the reunion that he was “very ill-prepared” and would be relying on his phone to help him through some of the lyrics.

He wasn’t alone in occasionally needing a refresher, and the forgotten words quickly became part of the fun, with Diggs’ phone-assisted performances emerging as something of a running gag throughout the celebration.

If anything, the imperfections only added to the reunion’s warmth. This wasn’t about recreating Rent exactly as it had been in 1996. It was about watching the people who were there at the beginning come together again, laugh about the intervening years and revisit music that has remained a defining part of their lives.

The reunion was also particularly fitting for The Festival, which was created by founders Joshua Saltman and David Schwartz as a place where Broadway fans could experience the kind of unexpected collaborations and one-of-a-kind performances that aren’t possible during a traditional night at the theater.

Schwartz previously told PEOPLE that he saw the original company of Rent some 15 or 20 times, even sleeping on the sidewalk at least once for lottery tickets, and called bringing the cast back together one of the centerpieces of The Festival’s inaugural weekend.

“Rent really redefined Broadway,” he told PEOPLE ahead of the event. “It reinvigorated the industry and introduced so many people to musical theater.”

Saturday’s crowd offered plenty of evidence of that legacy.

Fans who had been with the show since its earliest days stood alongside those who discovered it through later Broadway casts, tours, the 2005 film adaptation and subsequent productions. Together, they cheered the familiar opening notes, laughed along with the cast’s stories and sang along with songs that have long since escaped the walls of the Nederlander Theatre.

And there was only one song that could bring it all to a close.

The original company came together for “Seasons of Love,” Rent‘s enduring anthem about measuring a year not in minutes, but in the moments and relationships that give those minutes meaning.

Thirty years after they first introduced it to audiences, the message — and the musical — clearly still resonates.

No day but today, indeed.
