‘Pretty Weak,’ ‘Spineless Stuff’ — NFL World Slams Packers HC Matt LaFleur’s Stance on Josh Jacobs’ Legal Issues

Matt LaFleur had already made his support for Josh Jacobs clear while the Green Bay Packers running back’s legal case unfolded. After Jacobs appeared in court Thursday, the Packers coach was given another opportunity to address the situation.

His answer drew immediate criticism.

Jacobs pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property stemming from a May incident involving his girlfriend. He remains on the NFL Commissioner’s Exempt List as the league continues its investigation.

NFL World Criticizes Matt LaFleur’s Josh Jacobs Comments

Asked Friday whether the latest developments changed his opinion of Jacobs, LaFleur said they did not.

“Because I know the guy and I know the character of the guy, so I’ve said it many times, and unfortunately situations occur in life, and it’s just an unfortunate situation,” LaFleur said.

That response did not sit well with several observers.

Zach Kruse wrote, “Matt LaFleur on Josh Jacobs: ‘Unfortunately, situations occur in life, and it’s just an unfortunate situation.’ That’s the public statement from the head coach? Pretty weak.”

Mark Oldacres added, “Thought the same. Also disappointing that he seems annoyed he’s even being asked.”

The criticism extended beyond the wording of LaFleur’s answer. Some questioned what it communicated about his leadership in a serious situation.

Brendan Sugrue wrote, “Good on the few Packer fans and media who are calling MLF out for this quote. They aren’t letting their bias get in the way. As for the rest, try to see how weak of a quote this is. And people wonder why there are leadership questions with LaFleur.”

The backlash across the supplied reactions ranged from calling the response “pretty weak” to describing the approach as “spineless stuff.”

Packers Await NFL’s Decision on Jacobs

Peter Bukowski offered an alternative response LaFleur could have given:

“It would be SO easy to just say ‘We think highly of Josh Jacobs and understand bad decisions happen. It’s disappointing he put himself in this position, but we hope he can grow from it. We’ll be here to support him through it.’”

Ty Dunne questioned the response more simply: “This is a real quote from the team’s head coach?”

Jacobs was fined $1,000 plus court costs on the battery charge. Proceedings on the criminal-damage count were deferred for 12 months and can be dismissed if he satisfies the conditions imposed by the court.

His football future remains unresolved. The NFL has not announced a timetable for completing its investigation, and Jacobs cannot practice or play while on the exempt list.

Jacobs’ potential discipline had already generated debate after Thursday’s court appearance, with hispotential suspension remaining one of Green Bay’s biggest unanswered questions entering the season.

LaFleur said he would not discuss the matter further until the league completes its investigation. His attempt to close the subject, however, only created a new argument about how he chose to address it.
