With Thanksgiving officially in the rearview, Mariah Carey has jumped straight into Christmas—a holiday many pop culture aficionados associate with the star.

Lighting up Las Vegas with her sparkly ensembles, shining voice, and festive cheer, the artist ushered in her seasonal residency, "Christmastime in Las Vegas," on Friday night. The three-act special balanced her beloved holiday hits (including an extended version of "All I Want for Christmas Is You") with tracks from her latest album, Here For It All.

On opening night, Carey performed in a series of festive looks, including a bedazzled ombre minidress in shades of silver and gold. Designed with a deep V-neck that kissed at her bra-line with a jewel, it featured a sunburst pattern of sequins and a skintight fit. To pair, she stepped out in thigh-high statement boots—the perfect on-stage shoe.

During the set, she changed into a plunging red maxi dress, designed with gathers leading into a full, floor-length skirt. At the waist, beading embellishments added a bit of drama, and with Carey's diamond jewelry, she looked like the picture of holiday fashion.

The star of the show, however, was quite certainly her peppermint dress—a white column gown with diagonal red stripes crossing the body for a candy cane look. Covered in sequins, the piece was theatrical, glamorous, festive, and playful… just like the show itself.

While her grandfather was born in Memphis and lived there from 1974 until 2019, he grew up in Tucson, Ariz.

Less than two years after his sudden passing, Capodiferro tells PEOPLE she received an unexpected "gift" from her late grandfather

Analyse Capodiferro had just wrapped up her freshman year of college and was in the midst of moving to New York City for a dream internship when life turned "bittersweet."

On May 2, 2019 – just before embarking on a new chapter – her grandfather, Jon Allen Roachell, the man who helped raise her, died unexpectedly at the age of 79.

"I wanted to be able to be there to help [my family] clean out the house and support my grandma during this time, but I knew [my grandpa] would want me to go," Capodiferro tells PEOPLE exclusively.

"One of the last things I remember him telling me was how proud he was of me, which was really special and something I have always held onto," she adds.

Although Capodiferro moved to New York before she could help clean out her grandparents' house, the 25-year-old says their attic and garage were a "giant treasure trove."

Growing up, Capodiferro and her sister spent lots of time with their grandparents in Memphis, Tenn., where her grandfather had lived since 1974 after moving from Tucson, Ariz., where he was raised.

Her grandparents were avid yard-sale wanderers, so their home seemed to overflow with knick-knacks.

"You could dig for hours and not even scratch the surface of their collections of items," Capodiferro says.

Some of her fondest memories as a child involved tagging along to yard sales with her grandparents and finding random gems tucked away in their home.

One discovery in particular that fascinated her was a box of more than 20 vintage National Geographic magazines she found hiding in their attic.

"They were in great condition aside from a bit of dust," Capodiferro recalls. "Not enough to deter me, though."

As a nature lover, she was immediately drawn to them and intentionally left them at her grandparents' house so she'd have something to browse and admire after school.

"The magazines were special to me because my papaw and I had spent time together admiring the world through them," Capodiferro tells PEOPLE.

"We didn't travel much growing up," she adds. "These magazines were an opportunity to travel together, my papaw and I, to places beyond our wildest dreams."

Unfortunately, after his death, and during the process of cleaning his home, Capodiferro's mother donated the magazines to a local donation center in Memphis – unaware of their sentimental value.

"I was pretty upset, but I knew it was a tough time and everyone was doing the best that they could," Capodiferro shares. "I also felt more guilt for not being able to be there to help more so than anything else. But it felt like a big memory with my papaw was lost."

In 2020, a little over a year and a half later, and still struggling with her grandfather's death, Capodiferro decided to try to track down the beloved magazines for Christmas.

However, she couldn't remember their exact dates — only that some went as far back as the '60s and '80s — so she was nearly certain she'd never see them again.

"Statistically, it was impossible," Capodiferro admits. "I had sort of grazed through some local thrift stores to see if they had shown up anywhere, and I would find a few vintage National Geographic magazines scattered around, but nothing that matched his collections."

Nevertheless, Capodiferro refused to give up. While browsing online, she came across Goodwill's website and searched for "vintage National Geographic magazines."

Surprisingly, she found a listing for two boxed sets and placed a bid on a whim. A few days later, she was notified that she had won, and the magazines were on their way to her from Tucson, Ariz.

"It felt as though he had shipped them straight from Heaven," Capodiferro shares. "They truly could have come from anywhere in the U.S., but they didn't. They came from his hometown. It was such a special moment."

And although she doesn't believe the magazines she received are the exact ones her grandfather owned, she insists they are even better.

"They were in perfect condition. I couldn't believe my eyes. I remember sitting on the floor in my room and carefully scanning each page and just sobbing," she says. "For a moment, it felt as though he was right there with me flipping through the pages."

While admiring her new set of National Geographic magazines that night, she found an unexpected outlier: a 2019 special edition titled Women: A Century of Change.

At the time, Capodiferro was studying acting, but had turned her focus to comedy, with a particular interest in women's experiences in the field.

She spent her time reading the work of female icons like Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis, Virginia Woolf, and contemporary writers like Sarah Ruhl and Samantha Irby.

So discovering this particular edition tucked among the set felt like a sign sent by her grandfather.

"The experience felt like pure magic. A miracle, if you will," Capodiferro tells PEOPLE. "To have loved someone so deeply, and lost them so suddenly, was devastating in ways I couldn't even process. Receiving a gift from him in Heaven was one of the greatest gifts I have ever received."

Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2

- *Zootopia 2 *topped the Thanksgiving weekend box office with an astounding $156 million domestic gross and an additional $400 million abroad.

- *Wicked: For Good*, last weekend's big winner, fell to the No. 2 spot on both charts, but still scared up $62.8 million domestically in its second weekend.

- It isn't likely any title on next weekend's release calendar has the power to topple both *Wicked *and *Zootopia*, but one contender is horror sequel *Five Nights at Freddy's 2*.

If *Wicked: For Good *was going to fall from box office grace after only one week at the top spot, at least Elphaba will be glad that it was because of a bunch of talking animals.

*Zootopia 2 *ran wild at the box office this Thanksgiving weekend, topping the domestic chart with $156 million (including Wednesday and Thursday previews) and the international chart with $400 million, making for a staggering cumulative premiere gross of $556 million globally, per Comscore.

That represented a decisive victory against its big sequel competitor, which would have run roughshod over any other new release this season. *Wicked: For Good *still fared quite well, conjuring up a bounteous $62.8 million in its second weekend domestically ($93 million when expanded to five days). That makes for a 57 percent drop from its $150 million premiere last weekend, but there's no doubt this film has legs that will confidently walk it all the way through the holidays.

See the new 'Zootopia 2' cast compared to the critters they voice

Featuring the voices of stars like Shakira, Quinta Brunson, and Macaulay Culkin, *Zootopia 2 *likely performed so exceedingly well due to the relative recent dearth of family films on the release calendar. Before this weekend, the only studio to release animated family fare into theaters this month was Universal, and it was a limited, 25th anniversary re-release of 2000's *Chicken Run*.

*Zootopia 2 *not only bested *Wicked*'s thrillifying conclusion at the box office this weekend, but it far surpassed the proceeds from its predecessor's premiere. *Zootopia *opened to $75 million in 2016. Even taking out the preview revenue, *Zootopia 2 *still earned $96.8 million at the Thanksgiving box office. With a global start in excess of half a million, the sequel is on track to blow past the first film's global end-run of $1 billion.

Elsewhere on the domestic and global charts, two holdovers proved their staying power. ****

*Now You See Me: Now You Don't* held fast to the No. 3 spot domestically with a week three take of $7 million, dropping only 22 percent from last week. That's after a reduction of 311 screens, too. In No. 4, *Predator Badlands *turned in a remarkably similar performance, dropping only 27 percent in week four with a $4.8 million take, but adding up to $85 million cumulatively, where the illusionist thriller threequel currently boasts $49.6 million overall at the domestic box office.

In the weekend's other new premieres, A24's afterlife rom-com *Eternity *scored a strong $5.2 million on its estimated $2 million budget, and Chloe Zhao's Oscar hopeful *Hamnet *earned $1.3 million in its one-weekend limited release.

Next week, *Zootopia 2 *and *Wicked: For Good *will likely block any would-be usurpers at the box office.

*Hamnet* opens wide, but given its scaling, subject matter, and targeting of awards voters, rather than general audiences, the chances of it leaping to No. 1 are virtually impossible. What may stand a chance, albeit a slim one, is Universal and Blumhouse's *Five Nights at Freddy's 2*.

The animatronic horror with a slight bend towards kids arrives in the long shadow cast by the first film's gangbusters debut. In 2023, *Five Nights at Freddy's *became a Halloween weekend hit with an $80 million premiere, resulting in a lifetime global gross of $291.5 million. Box office watchers will have to wait to find out if horror is the correct wedge to disrupt what looks from here to be *Wicked *and *Zootopia*'s assured dominance in the first weekend of December.

One week after losing all their points from the Las Vegas Grand Prix, McLaren threw away a bunch more in an increasingly tense Formula 1 title race by botching a strategy call at the Qatar GP on Sunday.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took full advantage of the unexpected gift to clinch a seventh win this season — his 70th overall — as he closed the gap on championship leader Lando Norris from 24 points at the start of the weekend to 12 points, heading into next Sunday's title decider in Abu Dhabi.

McLaren still has two drivers in contention, with Oscar Piastri four points behind Verstappen in third, but must stop the slide.

Last Sunday, the two drivers lost a combined 30 points after both were disqualified following the race, won by Verstappen.

At the Qatar GP, Norris would have clinched his first F1 title with a win but finished fourth, with Piastri placing second having started from pole position and looking assured.

But after an early safety car, McLaren's decision to keep both drivers out backfired badly as Verstappen effectively benefited from a free tire change in a mandatory two-stop race.

"It's tough, we just have to have faith in the team to make the right decision," Norris told broadcaster Sky Sports. "Now it's the wrong decision, we shouldn't have done it (and) we didn't do a good job today."

Norris leads with 408 points, Verstappen has 396 and Piastri 392. All three title contenders have won seven races. Verstappen is aiming for a fifth straight F1 crown, with Piastri chasing a first title. Norris will become the first British driver to win the championship since Lewis Hamilton clinched his seventh title in 2020 if he finishes at least third in Abu Dhabi even if Verstappen wins the race.

McLaren's gamble backfires

Although Verstappen overtook Norris heading into Turn 1, Piastri made a clean start and took a comfortable lead early on.

Piastri also said McLaren made an error by staying out following the safety car, which came out after Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber was sent spinning off the track on Lap 7 after being clipped by Alpine driver Pierre Gasly.

"Speechless. I don't know any words," Piastri said. "It is a little bit tough to swallow at the moment."

Later, the Australian added: "Clearly we didn't get it right" and said there would be discussions.

The decision played into Verstappen's hands and the elated Dutchman climbed out of his car and jumped into the arms of his mechanics and engineers after winning.

"This was an incredible race for us, we made the right call as a team to box under that safety car," Verstappen said. "Super happy to win here, we stayed in the fight until the end. Incredible."

The decision to stay out was even more questionable in a race where drivers had to take two pit stops over the 57 laps — a measure imposed on safety grounds due to a high risk of tire degradation at the Lusail International Circuit.

Gambling on holding track position left McLaren at risk later on, unless there was another safety car.

"It wasn't the correct decision," McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said.

Because drivers were restricted to a maximum of 25 laps on the Pirelli tires, those who pitted had to change again on Lap 32.

After the McLarens made their first tire changes, Norris was in fifth place behind Piastri in fourth. That left Verstappen out in front and with several laps to build his lead.

McLaren pitted Piastri again on Lap 43 and Norris soon after, but when Norris came back out on Lap 45 he was fifth with Antonelli and Sainz barring his way.

Norris overtook Antonelli right at the end but could not catch Sainz, who finished third.

George Russell was sixth for Mercedes, with Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls) and Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull) completing the top 10.

Hamilton's dismal run for Ferrari continued with a 12th-placed finish. Aside from clinching a sprint race in China in March, the 40-year-old has not been on the podium all season.

Verstappen eyes another Abu Dhabi decider

Desert battles seem to suit Verstappen, who clinched a third straight win in Qatar and has won four of the last five races in Abu Dhabi. Norris may take hope from the fact he won there last year.

But the McLarens head to Abu Dhabi with a hard-charging Verstappen looking to repeat history by clinching a championship in the last race at Abu Dhabi, having done so when he overtook Hamilton on the final lap after a controversial finish in 2021.

"It's possible now but we will see," said Verstappen, who had written off his chances earlier this season. "I don't really worry about it too much."

Jonathan Smith's time at Michigan State lasted two seasons.

The Spartans officially fired Smith on Sunday. MSU finished the season 4-8 after snapping an eight-game losing streak with a win over Maryland on Saturday.

"The 2025 football season has not lived up to our shared standards for Michigan State Football. While that does not fall solely on Jonathan Smith, it's become necessary to make a coaching change in order to chart a new direction for the program," athletic director J Batt said in a statement.

"We are appreciative of Coach Smith and the manner in which he represented Michigan State with class. Throughout a difficult season, the team continued to compete. While their efforts ultimately didn't result in enough on-field success, they do speak highly for their character."

Smith is the second Big Ten coach to lose his job in 2025 season. The first? Former Penn State coach James Franklin. Both teams entered Week 12 at 3-6 and needed to win out to make a bowl game.

Penn State did just that and beat Rutgers on Saturday to get to .500. Michigan State did not.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the school "intends" to hire former Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald to replace Smith.

Six of Michigan State's eight losses came by multiple scores. The only close Big Ten losses Michigan State suffered all season came at Minnesota when the Gophers needed overtime in a 23-20 win and a week ago when the Spartans lost to Iowa.

Thanks to a season-ending loss against Rutgers in 2024, Michigan State went over a year without Big Ten wins.

That loss to Rutgers meant MSU finished 5-7 a season ago and also missed a bowl game. Through 24 games at the school, Smith's record was 9-15 and the Spartans' best win came at home over Iowa in October of 2024.

Smith came to Michigan State after turning Oregon State into a winning program in the waning days of the Pac-12. The Beavers had three consecutive winning seasons in the final three years of the old Pac-12's existence and won 18 games in 2022 and 2023 combined.

However, Smith wasn't able to show signs of quick progress at Michigan State. And now the school is looking for a third coach since Mark Dantonio retired at the end of the 2019 season. Mel Tucker was hired after him and the school has since agreed to NCAA penalties for violations during his tenure.

Michigan State has won just 17 games since the Spartans went 11-2 and won the Peach Bowl in Tucker's second season in 2021. MSU will miss a bowl game for the fourth straight season. That's the longest bowl drought for the school in over 40 seasons.

Fitzgerald hasn't coached since 2022

Fitzgerald has been out of coaching since he was fired by Northwestern ahead of the 2023 season. He had initially been put on leave following allegations of hazing within the program, but Fitzgerald recently reached a settlement with the school over his wrongful termination lawsuit.

As part of that settlement, Fitzgerald said it had been proven that he did not know about the hazing allegations when he was the team's coach.

Fitzgerald had three 10-win seasons while he was in charge of Northwestern. But the team's results on the field trended south in his final seasons. After Northwestern went 7-2 during the pandemic-impacted 2020 season, the Wildcats were 3-9 in 2021 and 1-11 in 2022.

Overall Fitzgerald was 110-101 in his time with the school. A former Northwestern linebacker, Fitzgerald led the Wildcats to 10 bowl games over 17 seasons and the school was even ranked as high as No. 10 in 2020.
