- Stephen Colbert responded to backlash he's received from *Lord of the Rings* fans who claim he's co-writing a new film in the franchise just because he's famous.

- The *Late Show *host is co-writing *The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past* with his son Peter and longtime franchise screenwriter Philippa Boyens.

- "I will just say that every moment has been a joy so far," he said of working on the project.

Stephen Colbert knows some *Lord of the Rings *fans think he's co-writing an upcoming installment for the movie franchise just because he's famous — but he's not going to fuel the fire.

The late-night host and noted Tolkien superfan was asked about the flak he's received from fans since the film was announced in March and why they should entrust him with Middle-earth in a new *Hollywood Reporter *interview.

"I mean, there's no reason to [share why]," Colbert responded. "And there's no value in me addressing that because all you can do as — I'll use a loaded term here — an artist is follow your heart and the craft that you have learned to try to turn this into something that is not fandom, but drama."

The comedian also pointed out that he's lucky because he doesn't "have to do this alone," as he's penning the film's script with his son Peter and longtime franchise co-screenwriter Philippa Boyens. "I have a great Sherpa in Philippa Boyens, who cares about it in the same way I do," he said. "And I will just say that every moment has been a joy so far."

In March, Peter Jackson announced that Colbert, his son, and Boyens are co-writing the script for a new film titled *The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past*. The installment is the next in line to be released following Andy Serkis' *The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum*, which is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2027.

An official synopsis for *Shadow of the Past *reveals that it's set 14 years after the death of Frodo (Elijah Wood) and follows Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monaghan), and Pippin (Billy Boyd) as they "set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure."

It continues, "Meanwhile, Sam's daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began."

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.***

Speaking with Jackson in March, Colbert explained that he was inspired to write the film after rereading the six chapters not featured in the movie *The Fellowship of the Ring*. They are chapter 3, titled "Three Is Company," through chapter 8, "Fog on the Barrow-Downs."

"I thought, 'Oh, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story,'" he recalled. "'Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books, while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made?'"

Colbert said he noodled on the idea with his son before showing it to Jackson, who "liked it enough to talk to me about it," then to Boyens, and then all the way up to the bosses at New Line and Warner Bros.

"I could not be happier to say that they loved it," Colbert said, "and so that's what we're gonna be working on."

Greenville's restaurants give sons and daughters a wide variety of selections to surprise mom with, and downtown, nothing is off the brunch table.

If you haven't made reservations for May 10 yet, Yelp's rankings for the best restaurants to take mom for Mother's Day are worth checking out. If you're too late for Mother's Day, mom would probably appreciate a gift card or a rain check dinner at one of these 10 choices.

The local business review website's number one pick ― a popular modern Italian restaurant with an outdoor terrace overlooking Falls Park ― is sure to be busy on the special day, so make sure you act fast and call ahead.

No. 1: Jianna

Known for being a great place to eat downtown with equally great views, Jianna is a standout in the Greenville restaurant scene, featuring indoor and outdoor seating. Last year, the dining hot spot was recognized by the 2025 Michelin Guide to the American South, and if you visit for the first time with mom, you'll experience it firsthand. The restaurant, led by James Beard Award-nominated chef Michael Kramer, gives guests a spoonful of Italy's flavors, including in-house pasta, artisan spirits, and a warm dose of southern hospitality.

According to Yelp, the Ricotta Crostini is a must-have for the table, a dish that masterfully balances the sweet and savory with creamy ricotta, truffle honey, sea salt, and charred ciabatta bread. Jianna's oysters, a signature seafood staple, are carefully handled from dock to table, featuring splashes of flavor hailing from the East Coast, West Coast, and Canada.

If you'd like to take a crack at preparing some of these dishes for mom on your own, Jianna sells its own cookbook on the restaurant's website for $50.60.

Thursday, September 18, 2025.No. 2: Fork and Plough

Fork and Plough isn't just a farm-to-table restaurant in Greenville ― it's also a butchery and market. Nestled in the heart of Historic Overbook, the restaurant features locally sourced, seasonally inspired Southern cuisine. What you can expect to be served on Mother's Day will be a mystery, since the menu rotates; offerings change twice a day to showcase different dishes and fresh, local, and regional ingredients.

For starters, split the Crispy Brussel Sprouts between you and mom, smoked to perfection with paprika aioli. You can also try the chicken and vegetable soup featuring mirepoix, potatoes, tomato, chicken broth, and fresh herbs. Moving on to the main course, there is much to be had, like the Cajun Turkey & Pulled Pork Cuban, the Shiitake Swiss Cheeseburger, or, if mom prefers to keep on the seaside, a grilled salmon salad.

∎ Where: 1629 E. North St.,Greenville.

No. 3: UP on the Roof

Enjoy the sights of the city, the Reedy River, and the Blue Ridge Mountains alongside mom at this rooftop bar and restaurant, located on the eighth floor of the Embassy Suites at RiverPlace. UP on the Roof is known for its elevated dining experience and has several locations across the Southeast (including one in Anderson), so you'll want to select the Greenville menu when browsing the menu online.

Highlights from the brunch menu are the "French Toast-Ally Amazing," a French toast-soaked brioche layered with chocolate cream, drizzled with caramel latte, maple syrup, strawberry compote, and candied almonds (a chicken thigh can level up this meal for an additional fee). If a hearty brunch is more mom's style, "You're Burrito-Ful" will keep you satisfied until dinnertime with scrambled eggs, sausage, home fries, pickled red onions, queso, cheddar cheese, cilantro, salsa, and creme fraiche― deliciousness wrapped together in a flour tortilla.

Travis Kelce is looking forward to his wedding day!

The 36-year-old NFL star is preparing to tie the knot with his fiancée, Taylor Swift, after sharing their engagement news in August 2025.

On Wednesday, May 6, the topic of the couple's wedding came up during an interview with golf pro Rory McIlroy for his and brother Jason Kelce's New Heights podcast.

McIlroy, who won the Masters again this year, was discussing the honor of hosting the tournament's annual Masters Champions Dinner when he mentioned the Kelce-Swift nuptials.

“Travis, you'll feel this this year whenever you're sitting at your wedding, and you have all the people in a room from like, it's so it's amazing to have all these people in the same room from your childhood … and it's surreal. It's unbelievable,” McIlroy, 37, explained. “The the only thing that I can compare it to is is your wedding day because it's like all this collection of people in the same room. It's like wild.”

Grinning, Travis replied, “I can't wait.”

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end has kept his wedding plans close to the vest, and the Kelce family has followed suit.

During an April episode of her Not Gonna Lie podcast, Jason's wife, Kylie Kelce, warned fans to stop questioning them about the big day.

"Quit asking me and me and my mother-in-law about upcoming nuptials," she said point-blank to the camera, referencing her mother-in-law, Jason and Travis' mom Donna Kelce. "Nobody's f---ing telling you anything."

The mother of four added, "I don't have any details. I don't have any details. I don't have any details. I have no details. I have none. Look at that. That's how many details I have. None. None."

Donna, 73, similarly sidestepped questions about the wedding plans when approached by TMZ in March.

"Is the groom's mother ever involved?" she joked, when asked about details.

She also denied having to sign an NDA for the plans.

"They know I can keep a secret," she teased at the time.

Megan Thee Stallion reflects on balancing her rap persona with her personal life and filtering out transactional relationships

She recently ended her relationship with NBA player Klay Thompson, citing trust and respect as non-negotiable values

Megan concluded her run in Moulin Rouge! The Musical earlier this month

Megan Thee Stallion has two sides — and she's learned how to nurture each of them.

The "Mamushi" rapper appeared on the cover of Entrepreneur on Wednesday, May 5, and opened up to the outlet about finding balance in her work as a rapper and her personal life.

"I feel like I had to learn how to separate Megan Pete and Megan Thee Stallion," Megan, 31, said.

"When I'm interacting with my people and my Hotties, I want them to feel like — when they had that experience with Megan — it don't matter if they were having a bad day, because once they met me, their day was better," she continued. "They might have felt some type of relief."

There was a time when the "HISS" rapper felt her work persona was taking over — and people treated her differently because of it.

"I was Megan Thee Stallion all the time. I was on all the time. And people treated me that way. Like, even people that had known me for so long in my life, they no longer treated me like the Megan that they grew up with. They started treating me like Megan Thee Stallion," she said.

She continued, "And I didn't like that. I'm like, 'This is so crazy. You know me, so why are we sitting here and you're recording everything I do? Or why are we talking about other famous people all the time?' It was hard for me to experience."

Over time, Megan also learned to filter out the transactional relationships in her life by distinguishing who's "going to be long-term and who's just the reason in the season."

"I had to learn that, when I go home, I can't take my whole day with me into my personal life," she said. "Like, whatever happened to Megan Thee Stallion today, I should not take that home to my real friends and my real relationships and my family. This is two different lives I'm living."

Megan's comments about long-term relationships come less than a month after she confirmed her breakup from Dallas Mavericks player Klay Thompson.

"I've made the decision to end my relationship with Klay," Megan said in a statement to PEOPLE. "Trust, fidelity and respect are non-negotiable for me in a relationship, and when those values are compromised, there's no real path forward. I'm taking this time to prioritize myself and move ahead with peace and clarity."

The "Savage" rapper also recently took her final bow in Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Friday, May 1. Her run was initially scheduled through May 17, but she announced she would be exiting the show early shortly after her breakup.

"Hotties, my last performance as Zidler in @moulinrougebway will be May 1 ❤️‍🩹," she wrote on Instagram on April 27. "It's been such an honor to be part of thee Moulin Rouge family and I've met so many amazing people in this theater! Y'all work so hard and I have so much respect for the dedication, the stamina, the work ethic, the time and the effort y'all put into the work!"

"I'm so grateful for the cast and crew that made this experience so meaningful," she continued. "And to all the Hotties that showed up or planned to attend, thank you for supporting me during this incredible journey! I LOVE YALL🥹 See you soon 💙."

- Jake Reiner is remembering his late parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, as he returns to his Dodgers baseball podcast.

- The 35-year-old explained that he wanted to pen an essay on his experience losing his parents before returning to the podcast.

- He also recalled bonding with his dad over the team and sport.

Jake Reiner is honoring his late parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, in his podcast return.

The writer and actor rejoined his cohost Kevin Kline on Wednesday’s episode of *The Incline: Dodgers Podcast*, where he thanked everyone for their well-wishes and discussed his and his father’s deep connection to the Los Angeles baseball team.

“I’m really honored to be back. It's been a long time coming,” Jake said. “If I could just say a few words to start us off here tonight, I just wanna thank everybody that I've heard from, near and far, since everything's happened.”

Jake temporarily stepped away from the podcast after his parents were found dead in their Los Angeles, Calif., home in December 2025. His brother, Nick, was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection to their deaths. He has since pleaded not guilty, with his trial set to start in September.

“I've tried to get back to every one of you, and I will continue to try and respond to people, but just know that I've seen all the love, all the support out there,” Jake said, noting that he “couldn’t appreciate” it more.

The 35-year-old explained that he had been thinking about returning to the podcast for a really long time, but first wanted to pen an essay about his experience losing his parents. He published the piece on Substack in April.

“I just felt like, with everything going on, people saying a bunch of nice, wonderful things about my parents in terms of their career and their activism, and just who they were as public figures… it's been really cool to see, but I felt like I wanted to put my words out there and let people in as to the kind of people that they were at home,” he said. “And for those that really knew and loved them, I felt it important to share that.”

Jake added that the essay was also a way for him to “connect with people that are going through their own kind of grief,” adding, “I know that not everybody's grief is the same. And even though everyone's grief is unique to them, I'm sure that there are aspects of everyone's grief that we can all connect with.”

He went on to describe the Dodgers as “his first love," adding, “It's something that I've always connected with my dad, first and foremost, and it's something that I will continue to connect with him for the rest of my life.”

Jake wrote about his and his father’s shared passion for the blue crew in his Substack essay, writing, “We loved the Dodgers more than anything. We went to so many damn games. I’ll never go to Dodger Stadium again without feeling my dad’s presence and hearing his voice tell me why Shohei Ohtani should never bat in the leadoff spot.”

He added that the pair went on baseball trips every summer and had managed to visit every Major League Baseball stadium together.

“It’s not lost on me that I was able to have these incredible experiences, that most people don’t get to have, because of who my parents were,” Jake wrote. “But I would trade every Dodger game, every Broadway show, every vacation, if I could just spend just one more hour talking to them and to say goodbye.”

- Melissa Barrera doesn't believe the record-breaking success of *Scream 7.*

- The former *Scream* star was fired ahead of production.

- Barrera thinks her returning costars crossed a picket line and "have to live with that."

*Scream 7* scored the best opening weekend in franchise history, but fired *Scream* star Melissa Barrera is skeptical of the numbers for the "nostalgia-bait" film.

In the fifth and sixth installments of *Scream*, Barrera played Sam Carpenter, the daughter of original Ghostface Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). But, despite being the new lead scream queen, she was dropped by the production company Skyglass for making pro-Palestine statements on social media and criticizing the actions of Israel in its war with Hamas. *Scream 7 *would then undergo a full creative overhaul, and even with mostly poor reviews the movie outgrossed *Scream VI*'s debut by $20 million.

"I think they lied about the numbers," Barrera told *Variety** *of the $97 million global opening, without providing evidence. "I don’t think it made that much money."

And when the interviewer said *Scream 7* "sucked," Barrera replied, "I know."

At the time of Barrera's firing, Spyglass said in a statement that it has "zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form." The actress responded by condemning antisemitism, while still emphasizing the importance of using her platform "to raise awareness about issues I care about."

Shortly after Barrera's ouster, her onscreen sister, Jenna Ortega, also departed, as did incoming director Christopher Landon. Original *Scream* writer Kevin Williamson and star Neve Campbell were then brought back, with Campbell's return being especially notable given she sat out *Scream VI* over a pay dispute.

The last two films had been built around the new core four of Barrera, Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding. And while Barrera and Ortega were gone, Brown and Gooding reprised their roles as Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin.

Asked by *Variety* if she felt like her former costars were "basically crossing the picket line" and were "scabby," Barrera said, "Oh, one hundred percent. I think they all are. And they have to live with that. The only way they were able to make that movie after what happened was to nostalgia-bait as much as possible."

Barrera added that she didn't receive much public backing after she was let go from *Scream*: "I got some messages of support from people in the industry, but what I found is that private messages with no action mean nothing."

Currently starring in the Broadway musical *Titaníque*, Barrera won't hasn't let the sour end of her run with the franchise ruin what *Scream* means to her and her career.

"People who love me from those movies are coming to see the show, and they can’t ever take that away from me," she said. "*Scream *is always going to be a big part of me because it was two years of my life, it gave me a lot, and I’m grateful specifically to [directors] Matt [Bettinelli-Olpin] and Tyler [Gillett] who gave me that shot. That hasn’t been soured for me. They don’t have that power."

Meanwhile, *Scream 8* is officially in development with writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.
