ROME (AP) — Alex Zanardi, the Italian auto racing champion-turned-Paralympic gold medalist whose career was marked by two life-altering accidents, has died. He was 59.

Zanardi’s family announced his death on Saturday, saying that he passed away on Friday night.

“Alex died peacefully, surrounded by the affection of those closest to him,” the family said in a statement without providing a cause of death.

In 2020, Zanardi was seriously injured in a handbike accident after crashing into an oncoming truck during a relay event in Tuscany. Zanardi suffered serious facial and cranial trauma in the crash and was put in a medically induced coma.

Nearly 20 years earlier, Zanardi lost both of his legs in an auto racing crash.

"Italy loses a great champion and an extraordinary man, capable of turning every challenge of life into a lesson in courage, strength, and dignity,” Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said on X.

“Alex Zanardi knew how to bounce back every time, facing even the toughest challenges with determination, clarity, and a strength of spirit that was truly exceptional,” Meloni added. “With his sporting achievements, with his example, and with his humanity, he gave all of us much more than a victory: he gave hope, pride, and the strength to never give up. On behalf of myself and the government, I extend my heartfelt thoughts and the sincerest closeness to his family and to all those who loved him. Thank you for everything, Alex.”

Zanardi won two championships in CART — 1997 and 1998 — in the United States before a brief move to Formula One. He returned to America and was racing in Germany in a CART event in 2001 when both of his legs were severed in a horrific accident the weekend after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. CART raced only because the series was already in Germany at the time of the attacks and could not return to the U.S.

During his recovery, Zanardi designed his own prosthetics — he joked that he made himself taller — and learned to walk again. He then turned his attention to hand cycling and developed into one of the most accomplished athletes in the world. He won four gold medals and two silvers at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics, competed in the New York City Marathon and set an Ironman record.

His spirit, will, and determination gave the beloved Italian a larger than life persona. When he returned to the U.S. in 2019 to compete for BMW at the Rolex 24 of Daytona without his prosthetics, he was the most revered driver in a field that included F1 champion Fernando Alonso.

Drivers from around the world sought out Zanardi for photographs and were transfixed as he told elaborate tales of his adventures in the nearly two decades since many had seen him.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) said on X that Zanardi’s racing career and “journey from life-changing accident to Paralympics gold medalist made him one of sport’s most admired competitors and an enduring symbol of courage and determination.”

Noted for his infectious smile and fanciful storytelling, Zanardi was praised by Pope Francis after his 2020 crash as an example of strength amid adversity. Francis penned a handwritten letter of encouragement assuring Zanardi and his family of his prayers.

Zanardi’s family added that it “thanks everyone who is sharing their support right now and asks for respect during this time of mourning.”

Funeral details were still to be announced, the family said.

The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) called for a minute of silence to be observed at all sports events in Italy over the weekend to honor Zanardi.

“We’ve lost a great champion and a great man, who was capable of bouncing back multiple times when faced with life’s difficulties,” CONI president Luciano Buonfiglio said.

As for *Brilliant Minds*, Quinto spoke about his character with EW in September 2024.

Quinto, who came out as gay in 2011, said he appreciated that his character's sexuality wasn't the focus of the story.

"It's a real honor for me to be playing an openly gay character on a primetime network television series where the character's identity is a comfortable aspect of who the character is," Quinto noted. "It also is the source of a lot of personal conflict for the character. His relationship to his sexuality, to intimacy, and to his family is complicated. Advertisement

Jockey: Manny Franco | Trainer: Riley Mott

Career Highlight: Winning at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 27, and at Aqueduct on April 4.

Fun Fact: Alvarado rode Sovereignty to the win in the 2025 Kentucky Derby. Mott has trained two winners since 2019 in Country House and 2025's Sovereignty.

No. 14 Potente (20-1)

Jockey: Juan Hernandez | Trainer: Bob Baffert

Career Highlight: Has won two of its three races, at Santa Anita Park on Jan. 31 and at the same venue on March 7. Faded to second at the Santa Anita Derby.

Fun Fact: Both Potente and Commandment share the same sire, Into Mischief.

No. 15 Emerging Market (15-1)

Jockey: Flavien Prat | Trainer: Chad Brown

Career Highlight: Has won both its career races.

Fun Fact: Enters with the fewest starts (2) of any horse in the field. Prat rode Country House to the 2019 win after a disqualification. Brown has trained two past Derby runners-up.

No. 16 Pavlovian (30-1)

Jockey: Edwin Maldonado | Trainer: Doug O’Neill

Career Highlight: Its results improved dramatically after wearing blinkers, including a win in the Sunland Derby.

Career Highlight: Has earned $1.1 million in earnings in six starts.

Fun Fact: Further Ado has the highest top-end speed of any horse in the field, according to both the Beyer Speed Figures and Brisnet Speed Ratings. Velazquez has been the winning jockey in 2011, 2017 and 2020.

No. 19 Golden Tempo (30-1)

Jockey: Jose Ortiz | Trainer: Cherie DeVaux

Career Highlight: Has raced four times, winning twice.

Fun Fact: Tempo's father, Curlin, has sired three past Derby runners-up (Exaggerator, Good Magic, Journalism).

No. 21 Great White (50-1)

Jockey: Alex Achard | Trainer: John Ennis

Career Highlight: Great White has won two races but both were on synthetic tracks instead of dirt the kind it will run on at Churchill Downs.

Fun Fact: Did not officially join the Derby field until Wednesday, after Silent Tactic's scratch.

No. 22 Ocelli (50-1)

Jockey: Joseph Ramos | Trainer: D. Whitworth Beckman

Career Highlight: Finished third in the high-profile Wood Memorial, but has yet to produce a victory in six starts.

Fun Fact: Joined the field Thursday after Fulleffort was scratched following an X-ray showing a chip and fluid in Fulleffort's left hind ankle.

No. 23 Robusta (50-1)

Jockey: Cristian Torres | Trainer: Doug O'Neill

NEW YORK (AP) — CJ Abrams hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Washington Nationals beat the Mets 5-4 Thursday, dealing reeling New York its 17th loss in 20 games.

James Wood robbed Juan Soto of a home run with a leaping catch at the right-field wall in the first inning and Washington dropped the Mets to a major league-worst 10-21. New York's .323 winning percentage through April is its fourth-lowest behind starts in 1962 (3-13), 1964 (2-10) and 1981 (4-10).

New York, which opened with the season with the major leagues' highest payroll at $358.4 million, went 3-6 on its homestand and headed to California for a nine-game trip.

After overcoming a 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead on MJ Melendez's three-run homer in the third off Miles Mikolas and Mark Vientos' RBI double in the sixth against Mitchell Parker (1-0), the Mets lost a game in which they were ahead for the 10th time this year.

Luis GarcĆa Jr. singled on the first pitch of the eighth from Luke Weaver (2-1) and Daylen Lile beat out the relay throw to avoid a double-play grounder. Abrams drove a hanging changeup 403 feet to right-center.

Gus Varland got four outs for his second save. He retired Tyrone Taylor on a flyout in the eighth that stranded Soto on second and struck out Ronny Mauricio on a full-count slider for the final out with Francisco Alvarez at second.

Washington went ahead 2-0 in the first. Jorbit Vivas raced home from first after pitcher Freddy Peralta threw the ball wildly past first on Nasim NuƱez’s comebacker and NuƱez came home on Jacob Young’s single. Abrams added an RBI single in the third.

Up next

Nationals: RHP Jake Irvin (1-3, 4.85) starts Friday against visiting Milwaukee and RHP Jacob Misiorowski (1-2, 3.31).

Mets: RHP Christian Scott (0-0, 6.75) starts Friday at the Los Angeles Angels, who send RHP Walbert UreƱa (0-3, 4.76) to the mound.

Max Quinn, a Cleveland Guardians fan, had his life turned upside down when he snatched a home run ball from an 11-year-old, Evelyn, when his team clashed with the Tampa Bay Rays at Progressive Field on Monday, April 27.

In a matter of hours, Quinn went from complete anonymity to public enemy number one for baseball enthusiasts, who called him everything from “pathetic” to “greedy.”

Seeing no end to the harassment, Quinn decided to face the controversy head-on, appearing in an interview where he addressed his critics, as well as the little girl at the center of the story.

Appearing on Fox 8 yesterday (April 29), Quinn said whatever happened during the game was a “heat-of-the-moment thing.”

“I’m so utterly sorry for everything that transpired. I made a bad decision. I’m paying for it online,” he added.

Quinn’s actions were captured by the Rays’ broadcast on Monday. He was seen botching the home run catch, which caused the ball to land on the floor.

Evelyn was seen coming down the steps to try to secure it, only for Quinn to run over and grab it first.

Quinn insisted that he “didn’t realize it was a little girl” at the time, saying all he could see was an outstretched glove going for the ball.

He said he did not understand the severity of what he had done until he got back to his seat.

He said he was criticized by fellow attendees.

“I won’t be able to sleep at night if I don’t give this ball back,” he recalled realizing.

Quinn shared that he returned the ball to Evelyn a while after, but acknowledged he should have done it immediately.

“I didn’t do it in a timely fashion. I didn’t do it the right way. If I could do it all over again, I would have just grabbed it, given it to her, and been done with it,” he said.

While the episode sparked heated reactions, Evelyn and her mother said they forgave Quinn

Appearing in a recorded video during Quinn’s interview, Evelyn thanked him for giving her the ball back.

The girl said she forgives him for his conduct, adding, “We know the internet has been going wild over this. We hope they forgive you, too.”

Evelyn’s mom, Nikki DeVore, spoke to a local radio show on Wednesday, where she said her family has “no ill feelings toward” Quinn.

She pleaded with others to stop harassing him over his mistake.

Quinn’s business was also affected by the controversy

Quinn was not only widely criticized online, with one user calling him a “greedy growna** man” and another stating that no man should attempt to catch a ball “unless it is to protect a woman or child.”

His store, Uncover Vintage, was bombarded with one-star Google reviews following the incident.

He said he was also forced to delete his social media because he received threatening messages.

“It’s been a rough 24 to 36 hours,” Quinn said.

“I’ve learned that the internet is a very mean, scary place,” he added.

Ryan Bass, who covers Tampa Bay Rays matches for Rays TV and NewsNation, reached up to the section where Evelyn was seated after witnessing that she was wronged by Quinn.

He handed her and her brother two different baseballs, posed for a selfie with them, then walked away.

Evelyn was deeply moved by the act and was seen crying.

“Kudos to the reporter for doing the right thing — keeping the spirit of the game alive for kids,” an X user wrote in appreciation of Bass.

“Salute to my guy,” another added.

Nikki DeVore also thanked Bass and the Tampa Bay Rays broadcaster, who continued to show a grown man clashing with her daughter while Cleveland’s coverage had cut away, in a Facebook post.

“The only reason he apologized was because he was caught on video,” a netizen said
