US fighter jet down in Iran: 1 crew member rescued as search continues, officials say

A U.S. fighter jet appears to have been shot down by Iran over Iranian territory, American officials confirmed to ABC News, marking a new and potentially dangerous point in the conflict.

One crew member aboard the downed two-seater F-15E has been rescued, according to two U.S. officials. The status of the other crew member is unknown, according to the official, and the search and rescue effort continues.

Combat search and rescue missions have become relatively rare for U.S. forces after more than a generation of near-total air dominance, with American aircraft typically operating with limited threats to aircraft in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Iran live updates

The early indications that the U.S. fighter was brought down by enemy fire would mark the first time Iran has successfully downed a manned American aircraft in the war, which started in February.

In late March, an American F-18 fighter jet narrowly dodged an Iranian surface-to-air missile, according to a U.S. official. Earlier that month, an American F-35, the Pentagon's most advanced stealth fighter jet, had to make an emergency landing after being struck by Iranian fire. Three F-15s were also brought down over Kuwait in a friendly fire episode earlier in the war, though all six pilots ejected safely, according to U.S. officials.

There are photos of the fighter jet that were released by Iranian state media that have not been independently verified by ABC News.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the downed fighter jet, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. Another U.S. official said Trump has been briefed on the rescue and condition of the recovered crew member.

Hegseth, Trump touted American air dominance over Iran

The incident comes after Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and other U.S. officials have said that Iran's military capabilities have been severely crippled and that the U.S. has "total air dominance" over Iran.

Trump, in a primetime address to the nation earlier this week, said the U.S. was "nearing completion" of its military objectives and that Tehran's anti-aircraft abilities had been decimated.

"We've done all of it. Their navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Their missiles are just about used up or beaten," Trump said in his speech on Wednesday night.

"They have no anti-aircraft equipment," Trump added in his remarks. "Their radar is 100% annihilated. We are unstoppable as a military force."

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has made a number of false claims about U.S. aircraft being downed but the U.S. has pushed back on those.

What Trump has said on Iran war timeline as conflict nears week 6

Iran has maintained at least some ability to continue with attacks targeting U.S. facilities in the Middle East and other countries in the region, wounding more than 300 U.S. service members, according to U.S. officials. The number of wounded has increased at a relatively steady rate each week, data reviewed by ABC News shows. Thirteen service members have been killed in action since the war began five weeks ago, according to Pentagon data.

Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, with whom Trump has said he is negotiating, taunted the U.S. over the missing crew member in a social media post on Friday.

In the post, Ghalibaf suggested that the U.S. war effort had shifted from pursuing "regime change" to trying to locate and rescue downed pilots.

Ghalibaf was the first top authority of the Islamic Republic to comment on the missing crew members.

Trump told ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl in a phone call earlier this week that the new leadership is better than what Iran had before.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Michael Ratney called the Iranian attack "disturbing" in an interview on ABC News Live.

"As a war like this drags on, it becomes increasingly likely that some incident like this happens. It's disturbing for a couple of reasons. One is it potentially represents a major escalation. If the missing crew member remains missing, huge political pressure in the United States to do anything to find that person. I dare say they'll be uncompromising," Ratney told ABC News Live's Elizabeth Schulze on Friday. "The other problem is it becomes just a huge political preoccupation in the United States. It becomes the sole story anybody thinks about. At the same time, the war is still going on, and there's a lot of crises globally at this point."

What do pilots do to prepare for being shot down?

Pilots undergo training in SERE -- which stands for Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape. It's a program designed to prepare them for the possibility of isolation behind enemy lines.

Under survival training, airmen are taught to stabilize themselves in the immediate aftermath of an incident, administering self-aid if wounded and securing basic necessities such as shelter, water and food, according to publicly available Air Force training materials.

Survival training often dictates the pilot leave the crash area, as it's likely to be a focal point for hostile forces.

"To stay in the vicinity of the crash or parachute landing site may lead to capture," an Air Force training manual on pilot survival training says.

Evasion training follows -- during which pilots learn how to move undetected through hostile terrain, according to the training materials. Pilots learn to navigate using maps and compasses, as well as natural cues such as stars and terrain features including rivers, bridges and other landmarks to orient themselves and move toward friendly forces.

The curriculum also includes resistance techniques aimed at helping troops endure interrogation and psychological pressure if captured. Finally, escape training focuses on recognizing vulnerabilities in captivity and exploiting opportunities to break free, according to the training materials.

Chaos at America's airports has mostly subsided now that workers with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) started getting paid again, but the underlying problem that caused historically long waits at security checkpoints hasn't been resolved.

With the Department of Security still shut down, President Trump signed an executive order last week to reallocate funds from other parts of the budget for TSA payroll. That has proved to be an effective band-aid for the immediate air travel crisis, but things won't fully return to normal until Congress passes a bill to reopen DHS. Even when that happens, air travel would still be at risk any time there's a prolonged government shutdown — something that has become more frequent over the past decade.

Trump's 2027 budget request, which he released on Friday, includes a proposal that would represent a major step toward what many conservatives believe would solve the problem permanently: Stop using the TSA for airport security altogether.

Trump's budget calls for cutting $52 million from the TSA's budget to begin "the privatization of TSA's airport screeners." Privatization is the name for a process through which the government transfers some of its duties to the private sector. In the case of the TSA, that would mean the people working at airport security would be employed by private companies, rather than being directly employed by the government as they are right now.

There are 20 airports in the U.S. that already use private security screeners. Most of them are small regional airports, but the list does include two major transit hubs — San Francisco International and Orlando International. Trump's budget calls for requiring all small airports to transition to private security, though it's not clear how many of the nation's 5,000 commercial airports would qualify as "small" under the policy.

Trump can't enact this plan on his own. His budget is merely a request. Only Congress has the power to decide how the government spends its money. But presidential budgets can often influence what lawmakers ultimately approve, particularly when the president's party has full control of Congress.

The argument for privatization

Privatizing the TSA isn't a new idea. In fact, airport security was handled by private companies throughout the U.S. for decades, until the 9/11 terror attacks inspired the government to create the TSA.

Republicans have favored privatizing a wide range of government services, under the belief that moving those programs to the private sector will make them more efficient. That same argument is being used today with the TSA.

Two GOP senators, Tommy Tubberville of Louisiana and Mike Lee of Utah, introduced a bill last year to fully privatize the TSA.

"The TSA is an inefficient, bureaucratic mess that infringes on Americans' freedoms," Tubberville wrote on social media at the time. "We need to focus on more efficient and effective methods to protect our country."

There is some research to suggest that government workers are no more effective, and potentially less effective, at preventing security breaches than privately employed staff. There have also been reports that the TSA has failed undercover tests of its security capabilities.

Last year, the head of the TSA declined to rule out privatizing airport security, telling Congress that "nothing is off the table."

The widespread disruptions at airports that snarled air travel across the country last month have added more fuel to their argument.

"This could ALL be avoided if we passed my bill and privatized airport security," Tubberville wrote last week.

The 20 airports in the U.S. that use private security were largely spared from the extended wait times that plagued airports that rely on the TSA during the current shutdown.

"The money's already been allocated, the payments have already been made, and that continues without interruption," a spokesperson for San Fransico's airport told the . "That is a very nice place to be."

The argument against privatization

Critics of privatization have long held that shifting government functions to for-profit companies leads to waste, corruption and ultimately harms the public. Those same arguments have been raised to make the case against privatizing the TSA.

"Privatization does not remove politics from security. It inserts a profit-taking middleman and shifts incentives toward cutting labor costs and training time while the public bears the risk," Hydrick Thomas, president of a government employee union that represents TSA workers, wrote in a letter to the Washington Post in early March. "Stop using the traveling public and frontline security workers as leverage in funding fights. The problem is political dysfunction, not the existence of a federal workforce."

Some major travel industry groups are promoting a different solution to shutdown-related travel disruptions. They're calling on Congress to pass legislation to guarantee that TSA workers and air traffic controllers continue to get paid during shutdowns.

"Every time Washington fails to fund the government, these essential workers pay the price. So do travelers. So does the economy. That is why America's travel industry has come together, because this workforce is too important, and the stakes are too high, for this to keep happening," Geoff Freeman, president of the U.S. Travel Association, wrote in a joint statement with the heads of the Airlines for America and the American Association of Airport Executives.

Congress is in the early stages of discussing next year's federal budget, which will mostly be consumed by debates over big-ticket items like military spending and funding for Trump's immigration agenda. It's unclear whether lawmakers will follow through on Trump's request to partially privatize the TSA when their final budget is solidified.

More than 3 million bottles of eye drops sold at CVS, HEB, Kroger, Meijer, Walgreens and other stores nationwide have been voluntarily recalled due to a "lack of assurance of sterility," according to a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recalled eye drops were produced by KC Pharmaceuticals Inc., a private label maker, and were sold under multiple brand names, including Best Choice, CVS, Discount Drug Mart, Gericare, Kroger and Walgreens.

The drops were initially recalled on March 3, according to the FDA.

On March 31, the FDA assigned the recall a Class II designation, defined by the agency as a recall in which use of the affected product may cause "temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

Voluntary recall issued for eye drops sold nationwide

The recall impacts 3,111,072 bottles of eye drops with the following labels:

182,424 bottles of Sterile Eye Drops AC (tetrahydrozoline HCl 0.05%, zinc sulfate 0.25%), 0.5-ounce (15-milliliter) bottles

303,216 bottles of Eye Drops Advanced Relief (dextran 70 0.1%, polyethylene glycol 400 1% and tetrahydrozoline HCl 0.05%), 0.5-ounce (15-milliliter) bottles, sterile

1,023,096 bottles of Dry Eye Relief Eye Drops (glycerin 0.2%, hypromellose 0.2% and polyethylene glycol 400 1%), 0.5-ounce (15-milliliter) bottles

245,184 bottles of Ultra Lubricating Eye Drops (polyethylene 400 0.4%, propylene glycol 0.3%), sterile, 0.5-ounce (15-milliliter) bottles

CVS shared several recall notices on its website for GeriCare Artificial Tears Lubricant Eye Drops, CVS Lubricant Eye Drops Redness Reliever, CVS Lubricant Eye Drops Dry Eye, and two-packs of CVS Lubricant Eye Drops Redness Reliever, citing potential microbial contamination.

In a statement to ABC News on Friday, a CVS spokesperson said the four products were "discontinued nearly a year ago," and that the company was "fully cooperating" with the manufacturer recall.

"We're committed to ensuring the products we offer are safe, work as intended, comply with regulations, and satisfy customers' needs," the spokesperson said.

Customers who purchased the products may return it to any CVS Pharmacy for a refund, they added.

ABC News has reached out to KC Pharmaceuticals Inc. for comment.

Following the announcement that Steinfeld and her husband, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, welcomed their first baby together, the Sinners star's family shared their excitement for the new addition to the family.

In the comment section of the announcement on Steinfeld's official Substack Instagram, her mom Cheri Steinfeld, dad Peter Steinfeld and brother Griffin Steinfeld shared that they're "officially clocked in" and ready to assume their respective responsibilities.

"Cha Cha officially clocked in!!!💕," her mom wrote, revealing her chosen grandma name. Similarly, her dad chimed in saying, "Pop Pop officially clocked in!!😊❤️."

Following his parents' lead, Griffin, 32, who's a professional race car driver, commented, "Uncle Griffin officially clocked in!!❤️❤️😎🫡."

Steinfeld first announced that she welcomed her baby girl with her husband in a post on her Substack, titled "Special Delivery."

"Our baby girl has arrived!!" Steinfeld wrote in the newsletter. "We're feeling incredibly grateful and blessed and savouring these early moments. Thank you so much for the love and well wishes."

On Friday, April 3, Steinfeld shared a brief update in another Substack post, writing, "Thank you for all your kind words and messages yesterday! To say we are unbelievably happy and in love with this baby girl would be an understatement.I'm soaking in the newborn bliss, but I'll still be writing here every week."

Back in December, Steinfeld and Allen shared the news that they were expecting their first baby together. The actress shared a round-up of her 29 favorite moments from the past year in her Substack newsletter in honor of her 29th birthday.

At the end of her list, Steinfeld included a video that announced her pregnancy. In the clip, she could be seen posing in the snow while posing with her pregnant belly around her husband Allen, who kissed her stomach.

The couple later shared the video in a joint Instagram post. In the comments, Allen wrote, "I love you ❤️."

In a January press conference, Allen revealed he was excited to be a dad and is looking forward to that next chapter in his life with Steinfeld.

"But this is the most important thing I'll ever be in my life, being a dad. And I know I love being a football player, and I love being a quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. But I'm looking forward to this one."

Steinfeld has also shared her thoughts about motherhood. In a blog post titled "Getting ducks in a row" for her Substack Beau Society, she revealed how her mindset has changed as she prepared to welcome a child into the world.

"While tuning in, I've experienced this surreal, full-body awareness that our world is about to expand in beautiful ways. We're getting ready to meet someone we already love so much," she said. "I've racked my brain for words to describe that feeling, and I don't have them yet. Maybe that's the point. For now, I'm blessed to be settling into the feeling."

Steinfeld and Allen, who first started dating in 2023, tied the knot in Santa Barbara, Calif., on May 31.

The invasion is returning to a small screen near you thanks to Ryan Coogler!

The Oscar-winning filmmaker is executive producing an Animorphs TV series currently in early development at Disney+, Entertainment Weekly has learned. Coogler will serve as an executive producer alongside Proximity Media partners Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler, with Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman executive producing for Scholastic. The children's book publisher is the original distributor of K. A. Applegate's 54-book youth sci-fi series, initially published between 1996 and 2001.

The Testaments and The Summer I Turned Pretty scribe Bayan Wolcott has been attached to write and executive produce the series for 20th Television. Proximity Media's Simone Harris, vice president and head of TV, and Dezi Gallegos, director of TV development, will also oversee the project.

The show's official logline reads, "Animorphs follows a group of teenagers who uncover a hidden threat lurking beneath their everyday lives, all while juggling relationships, curfews, and the chaos of high school."

The beloved book series, created by Katherine Applegate and her husband Michael Grant, followed a group of teenagers — Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias — who gain the ability to morph into any animal they touch after meeting a dying alien of the Andalite race. They learn that the Andalite has been fighting a parasitic alien race known as Yeerks, who are looking to take over the Earth in a bid to expand their empire across the galaxy.

The teens unite to use their powers within a secret resistance against the Yeerks and to save the world. Casual after-school activities.

The chapter books were first adapted for TV for a live-action series that aired on Nickelodeon for two seasons, from 1998 to 2000. The series starred X-Men actor Shawn Ashmore, Brooke Nevin, Boris Cabrera, Nadia Nascimento, and Christopher Ralph as the titular animorphs. Paulo Costanzo later joined the cast as Ax, a young Andalite stranded on Earth.

The news of Coogler's latest comes after the filmmaker won Best Original Screenplay at the 2026 Oscars for his critically acclaimed vampire period piece, Sinners. Fellow collaborator Autumn Durald Arkapaw also became the first woman to win Best Cinematography in Academy Awards history, while Ludwig Göransson picked up his third Oscar for Best Original Score.

And the film's leading man, Michael B. Jordan, took home the trophy for Best Actor after playing both twins Smoke and Stack.

The series is the second project under Coogler and Proximity Media's TV overall deal with Disney. The director's other project, a reboot of The X Files starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, was given the green light for a pilot by Hulu in February.

Original series star Gillian Anderson has praised Coogler's vision for the new series, telling fans that the project is "different" and "special," so fans should "give it a break."

"We've had a few conversations," Anderson said of Coogler during an appearance at Awesome Con. "He's such a cool guy, and so talented. And the pilot script is really good. I would say, have an open mind and give it a chance, because it's gonna be f---ing cool. It really is."

Barbie Ferreira and Charli xcx star as content moderators in the upcoming horror film Faces of Death

Lead actress Ferreira opens up to PEOPLE about working with Charli, and reveals that the duo have been friends for years

Charli's role in Faces of Death is the first she ever filmed, and she worked with director Daniel Goldhaber to shape the character

Barbie Ferreira is used to being in the crowd at Charli xcx's concerts, but sharing the screen with the pop star is a different story — and an "honor."

In the new horror movie Faces of Death, the Euphoria alum, 29, and musician, 33, play two content moderators with differing viewpoints. Ferreira leads the film as Margot, and shares a few scenes with Charli, playing the morbidly curious Gabby, whom she butts heads with.

Speaking with PEOPLE, Ferreira says it was "really cool" joining forces with Charli for the feature — which, shot in 2023, technically marking the pop star's first-ever film role — and reveals that the stars have had an off-screen friendship for years.

"I love Charli so much. We've been friends for a very long time, so it was just really cool to work with a friend who I admire and I've always been a huge fan of her music," Ferreira tells PEOPLE, citing her love for Charli's debut LP True Romance, as well as her 2021 appearance on the singer's former BBC Radio 1 podcast series, Best Song Ever.

"So it was really cool to work with her because, obviously, we are in two very vastly different worlds," Ferreira continues, "and I'm used to going to her concerts with my friends and kind of being in her element. And she got to kind of step into like the film element. It was her first time."

The actress adds that it was particularly "cool" to work alongside the musician because they shot just before the 2024 release of Brat catapulted Charli to a new level of superstardom.

"It was really cool to see such a huge pop star at the precipice of this huge moment for her," Ferreira tells PEOPLE, "because she's been such a talented artist for so long, but Brat Summer was really like, 'Wow, she did her big one,' you know?"

"And so it was really cool to work with her. She's such a star and she's just like an incredible performer onstage, offstage," the Euphoria alum says — and she has the concert track record to prove it.

Says Ferreira, "I love going to her shows. I've been to maybe 500 of her Brat shows. I've brought my mom to one in Montreal about the whole cast of Mile End Kicks to one in Montreal. I have the L.A. ones, New York ones, like … I'm just a huge fan, so I was so honored that she wanted to be in the movie."

"It was really fun," she adds of the filming experience.

Faces of Death, which incorporates the 1978 mondo horror film of the same name, was directed by Daniel Goldhaber, who also co-wrote the film with Isa Mazzei. Speaking with PEOPLE, Goldhaber explains that Charli joined the cast because she "was a fan" of his first film, 2018's Cam.

The pop trailblazer, the director recalls, saw that "the movie was getting made and she reached out and was like, 'Hey, can I be in Faces of Death?' And I was like, 'Yes. There is one role we haven't cast. Would you like to play it?' And she was like, 'Great.' "

For her "first real role in a movie," Charli had a ton of control over Gabby, from her clothes to her American accent, the latter of which Goldhaber says was the singer's idea: "That was all her."

"Charli came in and had a very specific idea of what she wanted her wardrobe for Gabby to be," the director says. "She was like, 'I wanna have Marla Singer from Fight Club vibes in this movie.' And I was like, "Great.' … that's just how I like to work with people."

Beyond Faces, Charli's film credits already include The Gallerist, 100 Nights of Hero and The Moment (a mockumentary about her experience during the Brat release), as well as forthcoming projects Erupcja, I Want Your Sex, Dakota Johnson's directorial debut A Tree Is Blue and an untitled project from director Takashi Miike.

Ferreira, meanwhile, appears on the big screen in two projects releasing in April, Faces and Mile End Kicks.
