Shonda Rhimes said she felt ill-equipped to deal with her early days of fame

The Grey's Anatomy creator spoke about her fear of being famous at the start of her TV career during a 92NY event in October

"It was really startling and shocking to me to be in a position where I was in a corner writing things for other people who should be famous, to discover that people wanted to talk to me or pay attention to me," Rhimes recalled

Shonda Rhimes felt ill-equipped to deal with her early days of fame.

During the Shonda Rhimes in Conversation with Robin Roberts: Year of Yes panel at 92NY in October, the television mogul, 55, opened up about when she first began to gain notoriety as a producer, soon after the premiere of Grey's Anatomy.

"It's so hard to do," Rhimes said of being in the public eye. "I mean, my job was to imagine things."

Challenging the audience to "name a TV showrunner or TV creator who you know their name on sight," she continued, "There's not that many."

"So it was really startling and shocking to me, to be in a position where I was in a corner writing things for other people who should be famous, to discover that people wanted to talk to me or pay attention to me," Rhimes added.

"It was like being stung by a thousand bees for me. It was really stressful," she further explained. "I just didn't have the equipment or the skill to get there."

The writer, who is responsible for hit TV shows including Scandal, Private Practice and more, said she eventually confronted her fears of fame by diving in headfirst.

"I really tried to do small things," she recalled. "I've always said, 'Do the thing that you're afraid of, because the act of doing it undoes the fear really strongly.' "

"I think my first yes was getting a commencement speech in front of 10,000 people, which sounded like the craziest thing I'd ever come up with," Rhimes continued.

According to the showrunner, another one of her first major public appearances came when she went on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

"I let myself go on television and just do the thing," she said. "It was terrifying the whole time. And yet, when I was done, I was like, 'Oh, that wasn't so bad.' "

"It was a lot of me reminding myself — the worst thing that could happen is that I'd fail. You know?" continued Rhimes. "But there are a million other things that can happen that are better than failure that could have happened."

She added, "So, if the worst thing that happens is that you fail, why not do it anyway?"

With two decades of TV experience and fame under her belt, Rhimes said she feels more equipped now than she did at the beginning of her writing career.

"I get more and more comfortable every time, but I think the first time I did an interview where I felt like I was truly being myself was an interview for [the 2015 release of her book, Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person] and it was with Oprah [Winfrey]," she recalled.

"I went to her house, I went to the Promised Land, which was the most intimidating thing in the world," continued Rhimes. "And I sat with her, and we did this interview."

According to the producer, that interview marked one of the first times that she truly felt comfortable in what she was saying.

"In that interview, for the first time, I'm just me," she said. "I'm not stressing over what I'm saying, I'm not rethinking everything in my head as I say it."

"I'm not so stressed that, like, I almost can't hear the questions, which was a thing," Rhimes added. "That has been a journey from there. Like, that was the first time I was comfortable, but it wasn't the last time I was a mess. ... We go back and forth — two steps forward, one step back."

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Super Bowl pregame show will open with a trio of standout performers in Northern California: Charlie Puth will hit the stage to sing the national anthem, Brandi Carlile will take on "America the Beautiful" and Coco Jones will sing "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

The performances will take place Feb. 8 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, before the NFL's championship matchup and halftime show featuring Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny, the league announced Sunday.

"These artists bring a distinct voice to the moment, helping set the tone for a day that will captivate fans around the world," said Jon Barker, senior vice president of global event production for the NFL.

The pregame performances will air on NBC, Telemundo and Peacock.

The national anthem and "Lift Every Voice and Sing" will be performed by deaf performing artist Fred Beam in American Sign Language. Julian Ortiz will sign "America the Beautiful."

In a historic first, the halftime show will include a multilingual signing program featuring Puerto Rican Sign Language, led by interpreter Celimar Rivera Cosme. All signed performances for the pregame and halftime shows will be presented in collaboration with Alexis Kashar of LOVE SIGN and Howard Rosenblum of Deaf Equality.

Puth is a four-time Grammy-nominated singer known for his songs "Attention," "We Don't Talk Anymore" and his 2015 breakout hit "See You Again," with Wiz Khalifa, from the "Furious 7" movie soundtrack. His appearance will come ahead of his fourth studio album "Whatever's Clever!" due on March 6.

Carlile has won 11 Grammys and won praise for her eighth studio album "Returning to Myself," which was released in October. She's nominated for two Grammys with Elton John for their album "Who Believes in Angels?" released in April and their song "Never Too Late" from his documentary film "Elton John: Never Too Late."

Jones is an R&B star who won a Grammy in the best R&B performance category for her song "ICU" in 2024 and released her debut album "Why Not More?" which is nominated for best R&B album at next year's ceremony. She also stars as Hilary Banks on Peacock's television series "Bel-Air," entering its last season.

"Charlie, Brandi, and Coco are generational talents, and we are honored to have them — alongside our extraordinary deaf performers — on Super Bowl LX's world stage," said Desiree Perez, CEO of Roc Nation, which is producing the show with DPS and Jesse Collins. "This moment embodies the very best of culture, live performance and our country."

While their Fortnite collaboration may be over, The Simpsons TV show is still very much going (and, presumably, will outlive us all). Season 37's most recent episode, "Aunt Misbehavin'' found Bart and Lisa taking sides in a bitter spat between Marge's twin sisters Patty and Selma.

But the episode begins with a feud between Bart and Homer, after Bart trolls his dental hygienist by devouring a box of triple-stuffed Oreo-like cookies immediately before his appointment. Homer then takes a power drill to Bart's Xbox, inspiring the boy to seek revenge.

Luckily for Bart, his Aunt Patty has a pre-conceived plan for how to brutally prank Homer. "Perhaps the enemy of my brother-in-law is my nephew," she muses to herself. Patty hacks into the DMV database by impersonating her newly-promoted sister and has Homer declared legally dead.

Of course, this isn't the first time that Homer has been declared deceased on the show, lest we forget that back in season seven, he pushed a lifelike dummy off a cliff into dangerously beaver-filled waters, just to avoid an afternoon of picking up trash with his co-workers.

But Homer was seemingly even more delighted by his most recent faux-demise. He was especially thrilled when Krusty the Clown dropped by the Simpson house to induct Marge into the Krusty Burger Widow's Free Fast Food For Life Club, flanked by late Krusty Burger mascots Burger Reynolds and Princess Fry.

"I should have died years ago!" Homer exclaims after learning that they'll have access to an unlimited supply of Krusty Burgers.

But arguably the funniest moment in the episode occurs during a montage of Homer reaping the rewards of his death, fittingly set to The Traveling Wilburys' "End of the Line." After celebrating the erasure of his debts, Homer takes a nap in a hammock and is quickly surrounded by a team of organ donor collectors. But before they have a chance to help themselves to any of his body parts, one of the medics has a heart attack and collapses. The others simply shrug and take him away in a body bag instead of Homer.

It should be noted that legendary character actor Stephen Tobolowsky deserves praise for his Simpsons debut as the proudly lame credit card point junkie Merle, who hooks up with Selma. Also, there's a solid joke about Mr. Burns' inadvertently smutty vanity license plate.

Susan Powter tells EW she was "bored stiff" while filming The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1994.

The Stop the Insanity! fitness icon "never wanted to do TV or movies," but felt pressured to do so at the height of her fame.

She was even "embarrassed on the Emmys carpet," Powter recalls to EW.

Filming Will Smith's TV sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was admittedly a bit of a rotten experience for '90s fitness legend and Stop the Insanity! infomercial star Susan Powter.

Seated inside one of her favorite restaurants in Las Vegas, the 67-year-old exclusively explains to Entertainment Weekly how the team around her at the height of her fame jerked the wheel of her wellness-oriented career in a different direction than she'd hoped — all in an attempt to turn her into a Hollywood star.

"That's what started to happen," Powter reflects between bites of a savory vegan bowl. It's the small pleasures she enjoys amid her low-key, solitary life, which sees her taking up residence inside a compact apartment while making ends meat from her gig as an Uber Eats delivery driver.

It's a far cry from the reported $300 million fortune she reflects on losing in her new Stop the Insanity: Finding Susan Powter documentary. In the Jamie Lee Curtis-produced film, Powter recalls losing her earnings over mishandled business partnerships and a lack of awareness about where her own money went following her meteoric rise to superstardom thanks to a string of successful VHS tapes and fitness media in the early '90s.

"One of the managers wanted to do TV, because they wanted the syndication money. I never wanted to do TV or movies. It was just part of the career thing. Let's get her on this and that," Powter says of the run-up to her 1994 guest role on Fresh Prince, which came on the season 5, episode 11 installment titled "Will Steps Out."

"I totally did it and it was fine, I did the best job I could," she says. "[Smith] was dressed in a fat suit. It was in a grocery store, but I've never been that person. I'm not hokey, even though that's how it was always portrayed."

She says that, while "Will was super nice" and that she "had a great time" with the future Oscar-winning star (who even "signed something for my kids," she remembers), she didn't love what moves like the appearance meant for her overall career.

"I'm not going to be an ass and say doing a TV show is something everybody gets to do. I did my job," Powter stresses. "Did I ever want to go back on a TV set again? No. Bored stiff. Most boring thing I've ever done. Sit in a room all day and wait to come out and read a line, and then you do it 10 times? I literally could bang my head against a wall."

Powter maintained a high pop culture profile throughout the '90s, which also resulted in a Kirstie Alley-starring parody of Stop the Insanity! on Saturday Night Live, interviews on The Tonight Show, her own short-lived Susan Powter Show daytime talk series, and even, as she exclusively tells EW, an offer to star in Kevin Costner's 1995 film Waterworld (which she says she turned down).

Despite personally resisting the notion of becoming a TV star, Powter joined the cast of the 1995 Designing Women spinoff Women of the House, though the show only lasted for one season.

"They were talented women and it was a talented set," Powter says of the show's 13-episode run.

"I was good on that. That I have seen. It was really nasty and snotty, that was the character. It was fun," she remembers, lamenting that "the show died" shortly after she boarded.

Still, while she might've enjoyed her guest spots here and there, she "didn't desperately want to be on a red carpet" and "was embarrassed on the Emmys carpet" later that year. "I didn't want to be there," she says.

Powter maintains that she "didn't get affected by the success of Stop the Insanity!" — but that "a lot of people around it did."

The new documentary (now playing in select theaters) follows Powter some 30 years after she decided to step away from the circus surrounding her media career, which also included the star filing for bankruptcy and, as she remembers, firing the entire staff she'd built around her and her Susan Powter Corporation.

In a 2024 interview with EW, Curtis called the film "an indictment of how we discard human beings as they get older in this country," and said it charted "an exploration of the incredible cruelty that we inflict on older people and the lack of resources, and the lack of dignity offered to these human beings who've lived before us and have been in service to us and have given us the lives we all are now living."

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard were taken aback by their daughters' reaction to the film they made while falling in love.

"Our kids rarely show interest in us as — anyone with kids knows — but they did want to see this movie we made, because we're very much in love," Shepard shared on a recent joint appearance alongside Bell on *Jimmy Kimmel Live*. "I mean, we're childless, and we had nothing to do but love each other."

Bell explained that she and Shepard, who would marry the year after the release of 2012's *Hit & Run*, "spent all this time making this independent film, and daddy wrote it and directed it, and they were like, 'We want to see it." And we hadn't watched it in forever. We were like, 'Okay, let's watch it with you.'"

What happened next surprised them both.**

"They loved it," Shepard reported. While acknowledging that the action comedy about a professor and former getaway driver who hit the road is "so inappropriate," Shepard shared that his daughters with Bell, 10-year-old Delta and 12-year-old Lincoln, "have a good sense of humor" and "like seeing us in love and kind of young."

What they did not like, however, was seeing their parents break up on screen.

"They were very upset, and what made me so happy is they were mad at mom, not me," Shepard joked. "They thought mom was a bitch, and they thought daddy was a good boy with a bad past."

Bell and Shepard are currently promoting a 13-year-old film because of its arrival for the first time on Netflix.

"Taylor told us it's cool to take back ownership of your old material," Bell joked on *Kimmel*, referencing pop superstar Taylor Swift's recent effort to rerecord and rerelease in an effort to gain control of the master recordings, which had been sold by the new owner of her old record label, Scooter Braun.

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."

With Thanksgiving officially in the rearview, Mariah Carey has jumped straight into Christmas—a holiday many pop culture aficionados associate with the star.

Lighting up Las Vegas with her sparkly ensembles, shining voice, and festive cheer, the artist ushered in her seasonal residency, "Christmastime in Las Vegas," on Friday night. The three-act special balanced her beloved holiday hits (including an extended version of "All I Want for Christmas Is You") with tracks from her latest album, Here For It All.

On opening night, Carey performed in a series of festive looks, including a bedazzled ombre minidress in shades of silver and gold. Designed with a deep V-neck that kissed at her bra-line with a jewel, it featured a sunburst pattern of sequins and a skintight fit. To pair, she stepped out in thigh-high statement boots—the perfect on-stage shoe.

During the set, she changed into a plunging red maxi dress, designed with gathers leading into a full, floor-length skirt. At the waist, beading embellishments added a bit of drama, and with Carey's diamond jewelry, she looked like the picture of holiday fashion.

The star of the show, however, was quite certainly her peppermint dress—a white column gown with diagonal red stripes crossing the body for a candy cane look. Covered in sequins, the piece was theatrical, glamorous, festive, and playful… just like the show itself.

Lastly, she changed into a micro red bodysuit trimmed in white fur à la Santa, to perform her big hit. Because why not?

Analyse Capodiferro grew up in Memphis, Tenn., where she and her sister were raised by her mother and grandparents

While her grandfather was born in Memphis and lived there from 1974 until 2019, he grew up in Tucson, Ariz.

Less than two years after his sudden passing, Capodiferro tells PEOPLE she received an unexpected "gift" from her late grandfather

Analyse Capodiferro had just wrapped up her freshman year of college and was in the midst of moving to New York City for a dream internship when life turned "bittersweet."

On May 2, 2019 – just before embarking on a new chapter – her grandfather, Jon Allen Roachell, the man who helped raise her, died unexpectedly at the age of 79.

"I wanted to be able to be there to help [my family] clean out the house and support my grandma during this time, but I knew [my grandpa] would want me to go," Capodiferro tells PEOPLE exclusively.

"One of the last things I remember him telling me was how proud he was of me, which was really special and something I have always held onto," she adds.

Analyse Capodiferro

Although Capodiferro moved to New York before she could help clean out her grandparents' house, the 25-year-old says their attic and garage were a "giant treasure trove."

Growing up, Capodiferro and her sister spent lots of time with their grandparents in Memphis, Tenn., where her grandfather had lived since 1974 after moving from Tucson, Ariz., where he was raised.

Her grandparents were avid yard-sale wanderers, so their home seemed to overflow with knick-knacks.

"You could dig for hours and not even scratch the surface of their collections of items," Capodiferro says.

Some of her fondest memories as a child involved tagging along to yard sales with her grandparents and finding random gems tucked away in their home.

Analyse Capodiferro

Young Analyse Capodiferro and her family.

One discovery in particular that fascinated her was a box of more than 20 vintage National Geographic magazines she found hiding in their attic.

"They were in great condition aside from a bit of dust," Capodiferro recalls. "Not enough to deter me, though."

As a nature lover, she was immediately drawn to them and intentionally left them at her grandparents' house so she'd have something to browse and admire after school.

"The magazines were special to me because my papaw and I had spent time together admiring the world through them," Capodiferro tells PEOPLE.

"We didn't travel much growing up," she adds. "These magazines were an opportunity to travel together, my papaw and I, to places beyond our wildest dreams."

Unfortunately, after his death, and during the process of cleaning his home, Capodiferro's mother donated the magazines to a local donation center in Memphis – unaware of their sentimental value.

"I was pretty upset, but I knew it was a tough time and everyone was doing the best that they could," Capodiferro shares. "I also felt more guilt for not being able to be there to help more so than anything else. But it felt like a big memory with my papaw was lost."

In 2020, a little over a year and a half later, and still struggling with her grandfather's death, Capodiferro decided to try to track down the beloved magazines for Christmas.

However, she couldn't remember their exact dates — only that some went as far back as the '60s and '80s — so she was nearly certain she'd never see them again.

"Statistically, it was impossible," Capodiferro admits. "I had sort of grazed through some local thrift stores to see if they had shown up anywhere, and I would find a few vintage National Geographic magazines scattered around, but nothing that matched his collections."

Nevertheless, Capodiferro refused to give up. While browsing online, she came across Goodwill's website and searched for "vintage National Geographic magazines."

Surprisingly, she found a listing for two boxed sets and placed a bid on a whim. A few days later, she was notified that she had won, and the magazines were on their way to her from Tucson, Ariz.

"It felt as though he had shipped them straight from Heaven," Capodiferro shares. "They truly could have come from anywhere in the U.S., but they didn't. They came from his hometown. It was such a special moment."

And although she doesn't believe the magazines she received are the exact ones her grandfather owned, she insists they are even better.

"They were in perfect condition. I couldn't believe my eyes. I remember sitting on the floor in my room and carefully scanning each page and just sobbing," she says. "For a moment, it felt as though he was right there with me flipping through the pages."

While admiring her new set of National Geographic magazines that night, she found an unexpected outlier: a 2019 special edition titled Women: A Century of Change.

At the time, Capodiferro was studying acting, but had turned her focus to comedy, with a particular interest in women's experiences in the field.

She spent her time reading the work of female icons like Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis, Virginia Woolf, and contemporary writers like Sarah Ruhl and Samantha Irby.

So discovering this particular edition tucked among the set felt like a sign sent by her grandfather.

"The experience felt like pure magic. A miracle, if you will," Capodiferro tells PEOPLE. "To have loved someone so deeply, and lost them so suddenly, was devastating in ways I couldn't even process. Receiving a gift from him in Heaven was one of the greatest gifts I have ever received."
