Retirement is a perpetual state of mind for Macaulay Culkin.

The *Home Alone* star, who was widely considered to be one of the most successful child stars in the '90s, opened up about his views on the subject during a new appearance on the *SmartLess* podcast.

"Technically, I'm retired right now," Culkin, 45, told hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes. "I retire and then, if I find something I like, I unretire, do that, and I immediately retire afterwards. Every gig is my last."

Technically, following the release of his 1994 film *Richie Rich* when he was 14, Culkin did actually take a lengthy hiatus. "I quit for nearly a decade," Culkin explained during the podcast episode. "Just went to high school, fell in love, got drunk for the first time, things like that."

Unlike a lot of child stars, he said he received the "lion's share" of money from his work, so he found himself in a unique position from a young age. "I was in a position where I could just put my thumb up my butt and play video games all day long. You know? I could do anything I wanted, really," he said.

Culkin, who first started acting at age four and received his first onscreen credit on *The Equalizer* nearly four years later, said a lot of his desire to take a break stemmed from wanting to be around other children. "When I was younger, I never worked with people my own age. I was always working with adults," he recalled. "I had a yearning to go to school, to have contemporaries and things like that."

At the time, Culkin said he was sure he was finished with Hollywood forever. "I was doneskies. I was like, 'I hope you all made your money because there's no more coming from me,'" he said, adding, "I made my name. I made my mark. I made my fortune. The only reason why I even do it now is because I like to do it. Pay, pleasure, prestige — that's the only reason to do a gig."

Macaulay Culkin confirms that's no longer his legal name

Macaulay Culkin lays out his idea for a 'Home Alone' sequel: 'It would have to be just right'

When asked if there was another field of interest he considered instead, Culkin said no. "I was kind of just drifting around, and tried to figure out what I wanted out of life and so forth," he said. "This was a calling that found me. I didn't find it. I wanted to explore that in a different way, on my terms."

To wit, in recent years, Culkin has seen a bit of a career resurgence. Earlier this year, he voiced Cattrick Lynxley in *Zootopia 2*, and he can currently be seen in a mysterious new role in *Fallout* season 2 on Prime Video.

What *Downton Abbey* did for British aristocracy, *All Creatures Great and Small* does for English veterinary practices. The series follows Scottish veterinary assistant James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) operating — often literally — out of a more experienced practitioner's small business in the Yorkshire Dales. From the moment James first meets Samuel West's waspish Siegfried Farnon, the two fall into a jovial (if not always smooth) mentor-mentee humor. Nothing sells cozy like the picturesque Yorkshire countryside, charming U.K. accents, Wellies, and baby lamb down. When it comes to his character's hypothetical favorite movies, *Heated Rivalry* star Hudson Williams says, "I'll have what she's having."

Responding to a Letterboxd Instagram query asking fans what they think the favorite movies of *Heated Rivalry*'s Shane (Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) would be, Williams jumped in on the conversation (he has some pretty good insight, after all). He thinks his character's top pick would be the classic romantic comedy *When Harry Met Sally*, starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.

Next up was Pixar's 2008 animated film, *Wall-E*, which is also quite the romantic tale, albeit between two adorable space robots. *Lord of the Rings: Return of the King* and 1956 western epic *The* *Searchers* round out Shane's list, which also features an honorable mention for gay coming-of-age film, *Moonlight*, the reasons for which Williams claims are "Issa secret." (Storrie does not appear to have weighed in yet on Ilya's picks.)

This is all very fitting, of course. In the smash hit TV series, which is based on Rachel Reid's *Game* *Changers* novel series, Williams and Storrie play professional hockey rivals by day, who develop a steamy secret love by night.

The series received critical acclaim and became the Canadian streamer Crave's most-watched original series to date and HBO Max's top debut for an acquired, non-animated title since 2019 when it debuted on the platform in November. Unsurprisingly, the show was renewed for a second season earlier this month.

Series creator Jacob Tierney previously provided a timeline for new episodes to *Entertainment* *Weekly*. "It will not be the same time next year, but it'll be pretty soon after that," Tierney says. "It's not gonna be two years. It's not even gonna be 18 months, I don't think. So we're gonna go as fast as we can, while ensuring that we're doing as good a job as we possibly can."**

Heated Rivalry - (L to R) Hudson Williams as Shane Hollander and Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov in Episode 106 of Heated Rivalry

When asked if any plans have been fast tracked in light of the show's success, Tierney responds, "There's only so fast a track to go down when the show is written and directed by one person. I haven't started writing yet. I'm going to. We are aware. We want to get the season out as soon as we can, as well, while also making sure that we give people a good second season."

Season 2 will focus once more on Shane and Ilya's relationship and be presumably based on *The Long Game* book in the series, all of which excites Storrie. "I'm interested to play at the dynamic that develops in *The Long Game*, which is, now that we've established we're together and we're choosing this, what does that look like to consistently choose through new obstacles, new self-realizations?" he tells EW. "We're in the real leagues now, and it's cool to watch these people that have been in this heightened reality for so long. The other shoe drops that deepens the love, but that also tests some of their personal limits."

While the so-called "hair metal" genre has been somewhat scoffed at by critics over the years, there's no question that bands like Twisted Sister, Warrant, and Skid Row were massively popular in the '80s...and fans are still listening today (which explains why so many groups from back then are still touring live).

Of course, some of these albums and songs are more highly regarded than others. Earlier this year, Ultimate Classic Rock ranked the 11 best hair metal debut albums, highlighting standout initial offerings from some of the era's most popular bands. Longtime hair metal fans likely won't be surprised by many of the records to make the cut: Night Songs (1986) by Cinderella, which included the power ballad "Nobody's Fool," nabbed the #8 slot; Poison's Look What the Cat Dragged In from the same year — featuring hits like "I Want Action" and "Talk Dirty to Me" came in at #6. The aforementioned Skid Row's 1989 self-titled album, known for such tunes as "18 and Life" and "I Remember You," made it all the way to #2.

So which hair metal debut album was ranked at the very top of the list?

Taking the #1 spot was Mötley Crüe's 1981 classic, Too Fast for Love.

"They did it first, and they did it best," wrote UCR's Bryan Rolli.

"Recorded on a shoestring budget in 'three drunken days' (according to Nikki Sixx), Mötley Crüe's Too Fast for Love is a feral blast of punk-metal that combines the bombastic hard rock of Kiss and Van Halen, the sloppy glam-punk of New York Dolls and the fizzy power-pop of Cheap Trick and the Raspberries," Rolli continued, adding, "Songs like 'Live Wire,' 'Take Me to the Top' and the title track remain some of the band's rawest and most enduring tracks, and Too Fast for Love set the stage for an entire decade of chart-busting pop-metal pretty-boys. Hard rock would never be the same."

Nikki Sixx rejected the 'hair metal' label

In an interview with Guitar World earlier this year, bassist Sixx opened up on the early days of Mötley Crüe.

"Now I look back on it, I was really nailing my influences," he explained. "I was pretty much blending early AC/DC and Aerosmith with the Buzzcocks, the Sex Pistols and all my pop influences. The s—t I loved about Mott The Hoople, lyrically, and Slade — all the stuff that I thought was pretty f—king cool."

During the same interview, Sixx said the band never wanted to be lumped in with the whole hair metal scene in the first place.

"I thought it was wrong, and we fought it. I still don't appreciate that, to this day, because we were, and are, different, and we always will be," he said, adding, "The thing is, we were real. It was the real deal. It was doom, gloom, destruction, girls 24 hours a day, the fastest cars, the loudest guitars, it was all the s—t that makes Spinal Tap wonderful."

Whether you call it hair metal, hard rock, or something else entirely, it sure sold a lot of records.

Jon Bon Jovi is welcoming 2026 with high spirits as the legendary frontman is set to return to the stage after a six-year tour hiatus.

Following his recovery from a career-threatening vocal cord injury after a 2022 surgery, the 63-year-old is gearing up for a monumental comeback.

Ahead of the upcoming string of concert series, the vocalist of the '90s rock band teased fans with a promise of a "legendary" 2026.

Bon Jovi members Richie Sambora, the late Alec John Such and Jon Bon Jovi during a 1993 concert in Paris.

On Instagram, Jon Bon Jovi posted a photo of himself looking out at the stage, the lights casting a dramatic glow behind him.

Fans couldn't get enough of the striking photo, and his announcement made it even bigger.

"On to the next chapter …2026 is going to be Legendary," he shared, sending waves of excitement through his followers.

Ben Hammond came off the bench to score 10 of his career-high 30 points in the third overtime as host Virginia Tech outlasted No. 21 Virginia 95-85 in the Commonwealth Clash on Wednesday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.

Christian Gurdak contributed 17 points and 19 rebounds as the injury-riddled Hokies (12-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame the loss of three starters to win their sixth straight game.

Amani Hansberry delivered 17 points and 15 rebounds for Virginia Tech, while Neoklis Avdalas added 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Hokes were without Tyler Johnson, who was on crutches with an undisclosed injury, joining Tobi Lawal (foot) and Antonio Dorn (back) on the sideline.

Malik Thomas scored 26 points and Thijs De Ridder added 22 points and 13 rebounds to pace Virginia (11-2, 0-1), which saw its six-game winning streak end.

In the decisive overtime session, the Hokies outscored the Cavaliers 17-7, with Hansberry draining a 3-pointer which gave Virginia Tech the lead for good, 85-82, with 2:24 left.

Both teams had a chance to win in the closing seconds of regulation. With five seconds left, Avdalas blocked a layup attempt by Virginia's Devin Tillis. Then, at the other end, Hammond missed a fast-break runner at the buzzer.

In the first overtime, De Ridder scrambled for a loose ball and scored on a layup with 13 seconds left to give Virginia a 68-66 lead. But Gurdak answered, cutting to the basket for a two-fisted slam with 4 seconds left.

In the second overtime, Virginia Tech led by five points with 14 seconds left. But Thomas scored six points in a span of four seconds, sandwiched around two free throws by Hammond.

Then, after another free throw by Hammond put Virginia Tech up 78-76, Chance Mallory scored at the buzzer off a missed jumper by Thomas to send it to a third overtime at 78-78.
