Joe McNamara’s (Zoe Saldaña) team is out for blood in Lioness.
The second episode of season 3 opens with a flash-forward revealing Joe in the hands of a group of Russian men after she’s kidnapped from her car on her way to work. Her captors begin searching for a tracker embedded beneath her skin, but Joe insists the CIA doesn’t implant its operatives with tracking devices. When the Russians threaten to torture her, she finally relents, telling them the locator is hidden in the big toe of her left foot.
Meanwhile, Joe’s team is furious that their boss has been taken and quickly closes in on her location: a home in the middle of a suburban neighborhood. They breach the house in broad daylight, only to discover that Joe is gone — and her tracker has been left behind.
The episode then jumps back to the hours immediately after Joe was attacked by two men at her Virginia home. Her team arrives, but finds that the FBI hasn’t thoroughly secured the area. Frustrated by the response, they take matters into their own hands, springing into action to identify the people behind the attack.
So, what happened during Lioness season 3, episode 2? Here’s a breakdown of everything that unfolded.
Who does Joe’s team apprehend in her neighborhood?

In the premiere episode, Joe was attacked at her Virginia home by two agents of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), but she managed to neutralize both men.
After learning about the attack, Joe’s entire team rushes to her home, where the FBI is leading the investigation. When Two Cups (James Jordan), Tucker (LaMonica Garrett) and Randy (Austin Hébert) arrive, they immediately ask an FBI agent whether the backyard has been secured.
“Sweep it for what? Perps are laying in the front yard. What do you think’s in the back?” the agent replies.
Clearly unimpressed with the response, the men head around back and conduct their own sweep. Tucker climbs onto the roof, where he spots someone positioned on another rooftop three houses away.
The discovery sets the team in motion. They apprehend the spotter and his cover partner before killing their getaway driver.

The three men are later identified as a U.S. citizen born in Russia and two Russian nationals with green cards.
Who does Byron Westfield confront at the restaurant?

Deputy CIA Director Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly) is having dinner at a political hotspot in Washington, D.C., when he learns about Joe’s attack. As luck would have it, Russian ambassador Maxim (Lev Gorn) is dining at the same restaurant.
Incensed that Maxim would show his face in public after Russia ordered an attack on a State Department official on American soil, Byron confronts him.
Maxim hints that he knows the U.S. has kidnapped Aleksi Yurimov — the head of Russia’s Special Tasks Department (SSD) — and suggests a trade.
Byron isn’t interested. Instead, he wants to see Maxim’s reaction when he reveals that all five men sent after Joe are either dead or in custody. Maxim doesn’t believe him, but Byron leaves him with a warning.
“Once we have wrung every inch of information out of them, we’re gonna feed them to the feral hogs at Gitmo. I’ll send you some bacon,” he says. “You try to touch us here, it’s a two-way street, buddy.”
Why did Cruz and Kyle kidnap the Ukrainian spy?

Following the attack, Joe meets with her boss, Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman), Byron and U.S. Secretary of State Edwin Mullins (Morgan Freeman) for a debrief, where the group tries to determine who exposed her identity.
Joe suggests the answer with the fewest variables is the Ukrainian double agent who helped them capture Yurimov. She takes the theory one step further, questioning whether the man they captured is actually Yurimov at all — or merely an actor playing a role in Russia’s larger game.
By the end of the episode, Joe’s suspicions have put the Ukrainian operative in the CIA’s crosshairs. Two members of her team, Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira) and Tex (Jonah Wharton), are sent to help CIA senior case officer Kyle McManus (Thad Luckinbill) abduct the woman from a bar.
“In case you haven’t already figured it out, you got a lot of explaining to do,” Kyle tells her.
The operative’s name has yet to be revealed to viewers.
