Outer Banks had quite the run.

When the action-packed Netflix drama premiered in 2020, it followed a group of treasure-hunting Pogues — John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and JJ (Rudy Pankow) — who set out to track down some of history’s most elusive artifacts against all odds, with many of those odds being the richer, more power-hungry Kooks.

Following the introduction of Cleo (Carlacia Grant), the tragic death of beloved Pogue JJ and several near-death experiences, Outer Banks’ fifth season dropped on Netflix on Aug. 20. Show creators Shannon Burke, Jonas Pate and Josh Pate announced on Instagram in November 2024 that season 5 would also serve as the conclusion.

“[We] hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago,” they wrote in a letter to fans. “We hope you’ll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break.”

From who originally wanted to pass on the show to unexpected rainstorms during filming, here are 12 behind-the-scenes facts about Outer Banks.

The cast lived in the same complex while filming season 1

Stokes, who plays Pogue leader John B. Routledge in the series, told Nylon in May 2020 that the entire cast was housed in the same apartment complex while they filmed the first season. He lived with Pankow, and Daviss bunked with Austin North, who plays Topper.

Cline lived a floor below the boys, and Drew Starkey (Rafe Cameron) and Bailey were a few minutes away.

“On the weekends everybody would come over, play games, blast music, eat food,” Stokes said. “We had a lot of time collectively as a cast to really sink our teeth into — not just mine and Maddie’s relationship — but everybody as a whole. It was kind of this natural organic thing for everybody.”

Stokes initially turned down the role of John B ...

When his agent first sent him a breakdown for Outer Banks, Stokes initially turned the role of John B down.

“I was like, ‘That’s The Goonies. That’s for sure The Goonies. I don’t want to destroy that,’ ” the actor said during a July 2021 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “So I passed on it. And I was like, ‘Nope. Not doing that.’ ”

... and read for Topper instead

After turning down the lead, Stokes said he decided to read for John B’s arch-nemesis, Topper (Austin North), because he was “so broke.” But the actor told Jimmy Kimmel Live! guest host Anthony Anderson that he “bombed” the audition.

Two weeks later, another casting director reached out to Stokes’ agent about John B. The actor read the script this time and realized that it wasn’t The Goonies at all.

“So I read it, and I immediately was sitting in my borderline-evicted apartment and I was like, ‘I made a giant mistake. It’s not The Goonies. It’s literally not The Goonies.’ ” he said. “And I had fully convinced myself for a month-and-a-half at this point that it’s The Goonies.”

Stokes landed the role two days later.

Pankow auditioned for the role of Rafe

Stokes wasn’t the only cast member to almost play an entirely different character. In an October 2024 conversation with Cosmopolitan, Starkey said both he and Pankow read for the character Rafe. Even though Pankow was eventually chosen for JJ, Starkey said the two characters have a lot of similarities.

“Rudy, you and I talked about this because you were in the mix auditioning for Rafe,” Starkey said. “At one point, we were like, ‘These guys are really just two sides of the same coin.’ A lot of the same motivations and the freedom that we have to really do whatever.”

Cline and Stokes dated in real life

Stokes and Cline once took their on-screen chemistry off-screen. After months of speculation, the former couple confirmed their relationship in June 2020. They dated for over a year before breaking up in November 2021. In a February 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly, they opened up about what it’s like working with an ex.

“We made a promise to each other before we even started dating that the work was always going to come first,” Stokes said. “And that no matter what happens in our personal lives, and the ways that life sometimes takes you in different directions, that we’re always going to honor the work. That stayed 100 percent truthful this season.”

Some of the cast quarantined together to promote the show

In a May 2020 interview with Cosmopolitan, Cline revealed that she quarantined with Pankow, Stokes and Starkey for a month and a half while they promoted the first season of Outer Banks.

“It was honestly like having the greatest support system ever,” the actress said. “We’d have our interviews and then we would make mimosas or celebrate and talk about it.”

Rain was not planned for John B and Sarah’s first kiss

John B and Sarah’s first kiss — a rain-soaked smooch on a ferry — wasn’t entirely planned. Cline told Cosmopolitan that director Cherie Nowlan almost called off filming for the day when she saw it was going to be raining for hours.

“I remember Chase, [creator] Jonas [Pate], and I kinda looked at each other and we were all like, ‘Let’s do it. We gotta do this. This is amazing, this is kismet right now, that is so romantic,’ ” Cline said. “We made sure with our camera department and everybody that it was okay, because you’re asking a lot of people to stand out in the rain ... [The crew] was like, ‘Hell yes, we’re doing this, full Notebook vibes.’ ”

Stokes helped build Poguelandia 2.0

The actor didn’t just nail in some boards for filming during season 4. Stokes previously told Tudum that he happened to be in town while the set for Poguelandia 2.0 (the two-story bait shop and house the Pogues live and work out of in season 4) was being built and chipped in by nailing in a few floorboards.

“I was doing all of these random things around there, and I realized, ‘Oh, I’m getting some sweat equity in this building as Chase and not as John B,’ ” he said.

The cast cried after Ward’s death scene

Fans may not have mourned Ward (Sarah’s violent father who tries to stop her and the Pogues from finding the treasure) when he died at the end of season 3, but his castmates sure did.

Cline told Tudum that Charles “Chip” Esten, who played her father on-screen, became a dad to everyone on set. According to Grant (Cleo), everyone cried on the way back from shooting Chip’s final scene.

“It was such a long ride back to the hotel, and Chip was just giving us all advice,” Cline said. “It was so sad.”

More recently, Daviss told PEOPLE in August 2026 that Stokes and Bailey “cried the most” on the last day of filming season 5. “Those two are the big criers,” he said.

Stokes doesn’t relate to his character’s decisions now that he’s older

Chase Stokes as John B. in season 1 episode 1 of ‘Outer Banks’.Credit: JACKSON LEE DAVIS/NETFLIX© 2021

The actor, who is now in his early thirties, told Cosmopolitan that he found it harder and harder to relate to his teenage character John B as the years went on.

“One of the things about being 32 now is you read the script and you’re like,’Why are you not thinking about this decision?’ ” Stokes said at the time. “It’s really hard to relate to at times. And I think that’s why these guys get a little bit irritated at work with me, because I ask so many questions to understand and justify some of these actions. I would love to sit John B.’s ass down and shake him into some sense.”

The final line of season 3 was an inside joke

The third season of Outer Banks ends with John B saying “hot damn” — a phrase Stokes told Tudum in 2023 was an inside joke on set.

Apparently every time the cameras were about to start rolling, the first assistant director would say “hot damn.” It became such a thing, that executive producer Jonas Pate secretly asked Stokes to say the quip as his final line that season.

Stokes saved Bailey from drowning during filming

During an August 2026 game of “Lie v. Lie” with Entertainment Weekly, Stokes opened up about the time he saved Bailey from drowning on set.

“We were in Barbados and there’s a scene when JJ gets knocked off of a boat, and he’s unconscious in the water and Kiara’s holding him up,” he said, explaining he soon realized he “couldn’t see Bails’ face anymore.”

“It was really hard to communicate,” he continued. “I was like, ‘Oh no, Bails has been under there for a while.’ So I jumped off the boat and I realized that she was not able to breathe underwater.”

Stokes said that everyone seemed to think they were “in the scene” and doing “great,” but he realized she was drowning, not acting.

Before discussing the incident, Bailey jokingly told her costar that he makes a “bad day worse” because of how easily he is able to swim.

“I swear he’s breathing under there just to make me look bad,” she said.

- *A Breed Apart *director Griff Furst claimed that he was “asked to participate” in an intervention for Hayden Panettiere.

- The filmmaker alleged that she was “fighting to stay sober” on the set of their 2025 movie.

- The *Nashville *actress died at age 36 on Aug. 16.

Director Griff Furst was allegedly “asked to participate” in an intervention for Hayden Panettiere prior to her death.

The filmmaker, who directed Panettiere in the 2025 movie *A Breed Apart*, claimed in an Aug. 19 Instagram video that the late actress was “fighting to stay sober” on set.

“I grew up on movie sets and I know a whole lot of child actors very well. I understand what it does to somebody to be put in front of a camera before they’re old enough to consent,” Furst started off his video, before discussing Panettiere specifically. “I was rooting for Hayden to beat the addiction that she spoke about openly and publicly.”

Furst explained that “no matter how certain you are that an actor or crew member is in a bad situation,” there’s nothing that a producer or director can do to step in and “verify” anything on set.

“You can adjust the schedule, you can collect internal reporting and you can assign a handler to make sure that that individual is being taken care of as best as they can,” he added. In Panettiere’s case, Furst said he stayed in touch with the actress’ team, which is where the alleged plan for an intervention came from.

“I was asked to participate, and I said yes,” Furst claimed. “That intervention did not happen, at least not that I am aware of. I wasn’t leading the charge on it. It wouldn’t have been appropriate for me.”

A rep for Panettiere confirmed on Aug. 16 that the actress had died at age 36, releasing a statement on behalf of the *Nashville *star’s father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” the statement read. “We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”

EW obtained a coroner’s report on Monday, stating that Panettiere died at the Judson Mill Lofts in Greenville, S.C. The report claimed that “an autopsy was completed” and there were “no signs of trauma” that “would have contributed to the death.” Multiple outlets have reported that her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson was present.

Furst stated in a separate Instagram video earlier this week that Hickerson was on the *A Breed Apart* set with Panettiere. He couldn’t speak to Panettiere and Hickerson’s relationship but stated on Wednesday that the *Heroes *actress “deserved better company” around her.

“I was very lucky to work with Hayden,” he concluded. “I wish she was still here.”

Meghan Markle could take on the role of the "ultimate temptress" in the third series of Guy Ritchie's Netflix hit The Gentlemen, sources have claimed.

News that the Duchess of Sussex was in discussions to return to acting broke on Friday, with GB News confirming that talks were at an early stage.

The 45-year-old former Suits star is said to be "very excited" about the prospect of appearing in the underworld action comedy, which would mark her first major acting part since she married Prince Harry.

It would represent a significant return to the screen for Meghan, who stepped away from her acting career in late 2017 ahead of her wedding the following year.

An insider described the anticipated role to the Sun: "The gossip in TV circles is that Meghan could play the ultimate temptress, who puts the cat among the pigeons by seducing an aristocrat."

The source added that the production would see her performing alongside Theo James, who portrays the lead character Eddie and is considered one of the leading candidates to become the next James Bond.

"The Gentlemen would be perfect for her as it's a big budget, glossy production which is quintessentially British," the insider said.

"But because it is on Netflix that gives it a huge global audience. In fact it is one of the streaming giant's biggest hits of recent years."

The source also noted: "Everything about the project screams quality, but it is also one with a bit of an edge too."

The series is predominantly shot at the Badminton estate in Gloucestershire, situated just seven miles from King Charles's Highgrove Estate. This proximity means Meghan would likely be working within a short distance of the King.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have had an estranged relationship with Charles, having barely seen him during the six years since they departed for California.

Their potential proximity takes on added significance given that Harry and Meghan are preparing to relocate back to Britain after those six years in the United States.

Suits cast | Source: GETTY

Much of the first two series of The Gentlemen was filmed across the Cotswolds.

The Gentlemen centres on Theo James's character Eddie Horniman, the 13th Duke of Halstead, who inherits his family's country estate only to discover it has been turned into a sprawling underground cannabis operation run in partnership with crime boss Susie Glass, played by Kaya Scodelario.

The show launched on March 7, 2024, and quickly became one of Netflix's most popular titles, with its second series arriving on the platform on September 3 that year.

Love Island presenter Maya Jama is also confirmed to appear in the third series alongside Mr James.

Previous series have featured actors including Hugh Bonneville and Vinnie Jones.

Meghan's final significant acting role was in the American legal drama Suits, which she left in late 2017 before marrying Harry in May 2018.

Celebrity marriages can be fickle, with some lasting from mere days to just a few weeks.

But there are some couples who have managed to keep their love going strong over the years, and those are the ones that make us believe that maybe true love is real. Dolly Parton was faithful to Carl Dean for nearly 60 years until his death in 2025, while Sissy Spacek and her husband, production designer Jack Fisk, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2024.

But being in it for the long haul doesn’t always mean you’re in it for the *entire* haul. Below, ** looks back at 10 celebrity couples who split after 30 years of marriage.

Leonard Nimoy and Sandra Zober

Mr. Spock himself Leonard Nimoy married Sandra “Sandi” Zober in 1954, a year after they met, and the couple went on to have two children. In late 1986, after roughly 32 years of marriage, Nimoy walked out on Zober — reportedly on her birthday, no less. They officially divorced the following year.

For Zober, it felt as though fame had changed the man she once knew. “He left me after 33 years of marriage,” she told the* **Orlando Sentinel* in 1988. “I spent the first 15 years being the only one who believed in him and struggling with him. I believe I had a lot to do with where he is now.”

According to the *Los Angeles Times* that same year, Sandi spotted a tabloid headline that rocked her: “Star Dumps Wife on Her Birthday for New Love.” The *National Enquirer* headline reportedly read, “Leonard Nimoy leaves wife of 32 years on her birthday — to marry younger woman.”

Nimoy subsequently became involved with actress Susan Bay, a cousin of director Michael Bay, whom he had known previously. The two married on Jan. 1, 1989.

“I met Leonard in 1953; we were married in 1954. I believed — well, we all did, then — that my husband and children came first, and I put all my energy into that. I read scripts for him. I did whatever I could to help his career,” Sandi told* Los Angeles Times. *

The Grammy -winning married duo Captain & Tennille once had a hit called “Love Will Keep Us Together” in 1975, but unfortunately, love wasn’t enough to keep them together by 2014. After nearly 39 years of marriage, Daryl Dragon — who died in 2019 — and Cathryn Antoinette “Toni” Tennille filed for divorce in Prescott, Ariz., according to CBS News.

The two met in 1972, when Dragon was a keyboardist for The Beach Boys and Tennille was cowriting a musical. She eventually joined the Beach Boys on tour as an additional keyboardist.

Dragon and Tennille began performing together and released their breakthrough album, *Love Will Keep Us Together*, in 1975, going on to sell more than 23 million albums during their heyday. They also hosted their own ABC variety series, *The Captain and Tennille Show*, from 1976 to 1977.

Legendary funnyman Jerry Lewis died in 2017, and his passing brought renewed attention to his strained relationship with the sons from his first marriage to Patti Palmer. According to Lewis’ 2012 will, obtained by The Blast and reported by PEOPLE*,* Lewis explicitly excluded all six sons from inheriting his estate.

“I have intentionally excluded Gary Lewis, Ronald Lewis, Anthony Joseph Lewis, Christopher Joseph Lewis, Scott Anthony Lewis, and Joseph Christopher Lewis and their descendants as beneficiaries of my estate, it being my intention that they shall receive no benefits hereunder,” reads the will.

Lewis and Palmer had been married for nearly 36 years when she filed for divorce in 1980. PEOPLE reported on their split at the time, with Palmer alleging in court papers that Lewis’ extravagant spending and infidelity had contributed to the breakdown of their marriage. Lewis “has displayed an open disregard for our marriage, and I am a ‘financial puppet’ at the mercy of his office, with no money of my own,” she wrote.

The relationship between Lewis and his children was reportedly strained. After Joseph’s death, Gary spoke out against his famous father, telling *The Mercury News*, “Jerry Lewis is a mean and evil person. He was never loving and caring toward me or my brothers.”

Before Meryl Streep was making headlines for her rumored — but never confirmed — romance with *Only Murders in the Building* star Martin Short, she had been married to sculptor Don Gummer since 1978. Together, they had four children: Henry, Mamie, Grace, and Louisa.

However, in 2023, it was revealed that the longtime couple had actually been separated since 2017. “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than six years,” a representative for Streep said in a statement, “and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.”

The couple had not been seen together publicly since attending the 2018 Oscars, and at the time, Streep was still wearing her wedding ring.

Though Short shut down romance rumors with Streep in 2024, that hasn’t stopped speculation. The two were spotted looking mighty cozy during a dinner in London in May 2026.

In 2022, *SNL *alum Dan Aykroyd and his wife of nearly 40 years, actress Donna Dixon, announced their separation. In a statement, they noted that they would continue to be legally married.

“After 39 years as a couple we are now on separate life paths. We remain legally married, co-parents, co-workers, and business partners,” they said in the statement. “This is our choice in loving friendship.”

Aykroyd and Dixon met on the set of 1983’s *Doctor Detroit* and married shortly afterward. They would go on to appear together in *Twilight Zone: The Movie *(1983), *Spies Like Us *(1985)*, The Couch Trip *(1988)*, *and *Exit to Eden *(1994). Together, they have three daughters.

Rocker Neil Young filed for divorce from his wife of 36 years, Pegi Young, in July 2014, as reported by *Rolling Stone*. Pegi was a frequent musical collaborator, providing backup vocals for Young and inspiring several of his songs, including “Such a Woman” and “Unknown Legend.”

Together, they also founded the Bridge School in 1986 after struggling to find a school that could meet the specific needs of their son Ben, who has cerebral palsy. They also share a daughter, Amber, while Young has another son, Zeke, from his previous relationship with the late actress Carrie Snodgress.

Young, now 80, has been married to *Blade Runner* actress Daryl Hannah since 2018. The two began dating in 2014, the same year Young filed for divorce from Pegi.

Three years after their divorce, Pegi released the album *Raw*, which was partly inspired by her split from Young. She died of cancer at age 66 in January 2019.

Deborah Santana had been married to iconic rock musician Carlos Santana for nearly 34 years when she decided to end their marriage. The couple had been together since Deborah was 21, when she put her academic pursuits on hold to travel the world with her future husband, as she recalled in a 2026 *HuffPost* essay.

But over the years, what Deborah wanted began to change. “On March 10, 2007, at the age of 56, I left the life I had known for more than three decades. I released Carlos, my partner of 34 years, so that I could thrive,” she wrote, reflecting on leaving the relationship 19 years earlier.

“I had identified myself by my marriage, summer trips to Europe, the abundance of rose bushes and apple trees in our garden, or by my three children, their beauty, and how well they did in school,” she continued. “But I realized what constitutes a glorious life is the liberation of hearts and minds.”

Deborah’s *HuffPost* essay followed the April 2026 release of her memoir, *Loving the Fire*, in which she further details her reasons for leaving her husband. “I began to want a solo life, to live without the burden of suspicion about Carlos’s infidelity and be open to new possibilities for myself,” she wrote.

The public was shocked to learn in 2010 that former Vice President Al Gore and his wife of 40 years, Tipper Gore, were separating — and so were the couples’ close friends.

The Gores announced their separation in early June that year. “They were always such a loving and supportive couple and are incredibly close, especially for a couple in politics,” a source told PEOPLE at the time.

The same source added, “They were always affectionate and loving and a tight family unit. I am shocked.”

As of 2014, the politician was still separated from Tipper but not divorced and had begun dating environmentalist Elizabeth Keadle. “I don’t want to get into my personal life, but we’re a couple,” Gore told *Politico* at the time.

*Hellboy* star Ron Perlman was married to jewelry designer Opal Stone Perlman, for nearly 40 years before he filed for divorce in November 2019. His divorce filing, which was obtained by PEOPLE, cited irreconcilable differences. They share two adult children, daughter Blake and son Brandon.

Eight months after Perlman filed for divorce, his estranged wife responded, also citing irreconcilable differences and requesting spousal support and that Perlman pay her attorney fees. Though Stone did not list a date of separation, Perlman listed it as May 10, 2019, in his filing.

The divorce was finalized in 2021, and Perlman has been married to actress Allison Dunbar, his costar on the Crackle series *StartUp, *since 2022.

Veteran actors Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman — who famously starred as husband and wife in *Matilda* (1996) and romantic partners on *Taxi *— began dating shortly after meeting in 1971 and quickly moved in together. They tied the knot in 1982, the same year Perlman began her 11-season run on *Cheers.*

The couple went on to welcome three children — Lucy, 43, Grace, 41, and Jacob, 38 — and became one of Hollywood’s most enduring pairs. They first separated in 2012 after 30 years of marriage but reconciled the following year. In 2017, they separated again, but they never divorced and, nearly a decade later, don’t plan on it.

Though they are no longer romantically involved, the two still share a special bond. “We’re always over at her house,” DeVito told *AARP *in July 2026 (via EW)*.* He also noted that he and Perlman talk daily and get together for weekly meals. “We see the grandchildren together, that kind of stuff. So that’s a good relationship.”

Former England captain Michael Vaughan says he "really fears" for Pakistan and felt "quite sad" watching their heavy defeat by England in the first Test at Headingley.

Pakistan were thrashed by an innings and 103 runs in the series opener - batting for 85.4 overs across both innings combined.

A side that has produced some of the sport's most fearsome bowlers were also meek with the ball and poor in the field.

"They've been absolutely blown away," Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special. "They've been hammered. I've never seen them look so timid.

"The tactical side wasn't there. The skill level and the class between the sides, Pakistan look a long way short.

"I hope they can find something over the next couple of days.

"They'll get criticised and rightly so, hopefully that will force them to find something."

Pakistan have long been known for their turmoil off the field and their current struggles were perhaps best summed up in the post-match news conference.

Stand-in skipper Salman Agha laughed he is "more than happy" to hand the captaincy back to Babar Azam for the second Test, which starts at Lord's on Thursday.

A decade ago they were top of the Test rankings while iconic teams in the late 1980s and 1990s, featuring all-time greats such as Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, won three Test series in a row in England.

Now they are bottom of the World Test Championship, have lost five of their past six Tests and 14 defeats from 19 Tests going back to December 2023.

Former captain Ramiz Raja told TMS he "fears the worst".

"The first pillar has fallen, and that's the fans, they are disenchanted, they aren't going to back this team and who would?" Raja said.

"If you lose 17 Test matches in the last 20 you've played nobody's going to back this team."

Vaughan added: "I look at this side and feel quite sad watching them this week.

"I've seen many Pakistan sides play and this side just seem to be lacking all that spirit and fight we've come accustomed to seeing."

New Root era begins with huge win over Pakistan

'Plug him in as attack leader' - England-Pakistan player ratings

'What's the point in playing?' - where has it gone wrong?

Babar, who missed this Test with a hand injury, is the only Pakistan batter in the top 25 of the International Cricket Council's Test batting rankings.

Their bowling attack is without the likes of Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah, who have impressed at times in Tests but have often been used in shorter formats or struggled for form and fitness.

Four of their five victories since 2023 have come at home, where spinning pitches have often been prioritised in pursuit of wins.

Industrial fans, heaters and windbreaks were used to prepare a pitch during the series win over England in 2024.

"You try to produce a one-dimensional team that can only win on select surfaces," Raja said.

"You've discouraged pace bowling and because so many players want to play T20 cricket because it's a route to success, they're just not bothered about playing Test-match cricket.

"These are desperate times for Pakistan cricket to make a comeback through pace.

"It's always been our thing, if you discourage the DNA that completes us, what's the point in then playing Test cricket?"

'We are rebuilding' - captain calls for calm

Salman played down the worries around the future, instead suggesting this is a team undergoing a "rebuild".

Their top seven have each played at least 24 Tests - Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, Abdullah Shafique and Saud Shakeel have also all played for Yorkshire - but only Muhammad Abbas in their bowling attack had played a Test in England before.

"We are a rebuild kind of team," Salman said. "It is not about worrying about the future. It is about making a future."

He added: "We didn't execute our plans at Headingley, but that doesn't mean we can't do the same in the next matches.

"We will sit down and think about the performance. And we will come back for sure."

Babar is expected to be fit to return at Lord's while Ubaid Shah, the younger brother of Naseem who can bowl greater pace than Abbas, Mohammad Ali and Khurram Shazad, is a candidate to come in.

Raja suggested there are further troubles below the Test team.

"The batting is below par, even at the Under-19 level and the Under-17 level.

"The bowling, yes, they've got two or three quicks [but] they aren't being exposed to this type of cricket. In the field they are still brittle."

WASHINGTON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The United States has designated Myanmar scholar and U.S. citizen Min Zin as wrongfully detained after his arrest by Chinese authorities in June, the State Department said, a move that makes securing his release a top U.S. priority.

The designation for Min Zin, who is accused of endangering Chinese national security, comes just weeks before U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House.

Rights groups have urged the U.S. to press China for the release of Min Zin, who leads a think tank focused on Myanmar, ahead of Xi's anticipated September 24 visit.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined that "Min Zin is wrongfully detained in China. This follows an extensive review of the circumstances," the department said in a statement on Thursday.

The department also called on Beijing to release other Americans held by China. Youlin Chen, a Chinese-born American seismologist from Boston, is being held on what the U.S. considers baseless charges and has been declared wrongfully detained.

A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry said on Friday that China is a country governed by the rule of law, and that "there is no so-called wrongful detention".

Chen's wife Yufang Rong, in a separate statement, said the designation signals that the detainees' "freedom is a priority for the Trump administration".

Rights groups say the number of Americans unjustly detained in China ranges from a dozen to hundreds, including coercive exit bans.

Prior to his arrest, Min Zin lived in Thailand and spent time in the U.S. and Myanmar. He had a valid Chinese visa that he had previously used to travel to China to attend academic conferences, the official said.

Min Zin traveled to Yunnan, China, on June 3 after being invited by the Chinese government to attend an academic conference in Kunming, according to the department's statement.

A senior State Department official told Reuters on Thursday that Min Zin was detained inside the airport and has been "subjected to repeated interrogations, isolation and detention conditions" for nearly 11 weeks.

"One minute his colleagues and family were engaging with him on the phone – exchanging updates on his arrival time and plans in China – and the next minute communication was lost. For 48 hours, his loved ones did not know where he had gone, if he was alive, or who could have taken him," the official said.

Yunnan authorities eventually informed the U.S. embassy that Min Zin was under criminal investigation for "endangering (China's) national security," the official added.

Rights advocates argue that China has long conducted "hostage diplomacy," detaining foreigners, including Americans, to gain leverage in bilateral relations.

Advocates for Min Zin, including some former Trump administration officials, have petitioned Trump to raise his case with the Chinese.

"Min Zin's case has raised grave concerns among other scholars about whether they could be subject to entrapment and detention by China," the official said.

China's foreign ministry in June confirmed the ‌arrest of Min Zin, saying he was suspected of spying and of endangering Chinese national security.

A former student activist who participated in Myanmar's 1988 democracy movement, Min Zin studied political science at the University of California, Berkeley.

He also helped establish the Institute for Strategy and Policy, which was initially based inside Myanmar but moved overseas after the 2021 coup, when the military ousted the democratically elected government of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.

China has publicly backed Myanmar's new administration, which took office after a widely criticized vote that excluded the country's main opposition groups, including Suu Kyi's political party.
