NEW YORK (AP) — More than 30 states will resume their antitrust trial against Live Nation and Ticketmaster on Monday after negotiations this week failed to result in many states joining a tentative settlement reached by the Justice Department.

Lawyers told the judge Friday at a hearing in New York that seven states — Arkansas, Iowa, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina and South Dakota, all of which of Republican attorneys general — were joining the Justice Department in settling with the live music giant.

The other 32 states plan to continue trying to convince a jury that Live Nation Entertainment and its ticketing subsidiary, Ticketmaster, are squelching competition and driving up prices for fans. They say this was done through threats, retaliation and other tactics to control virtually every aspect of the industry, from concert promotion to ticketing.

The companies say they do not monopolize their industry and that artists, sports teams and venues set prices and decide how tickets are sold.

A jury had already begun hearing testimony in the trial when the U.S. Justice Department, which had taken the lead in suing Live Nation, said it had reached a deal with the company that would save the public money by letting competitors of Live Nation into some ticket markets where they are currently excluded.

Many states criticized the deal, saying the federal government failed to get enough concessions from the company.

Testimony was put on hold for a week for more settlement negotiations, but with no breakthrough in sight, Judge Arun Subramanian said Friday the trial would resume.

The judge also ruled against Live Nation's objection to trial exhibits in which a company employee several years ago tells another worker that the prices Live Nation charges to access the VIP area of a Tampa, Florida, amphitheater are "outrageous," that customers paying the fees "are so stupid" and that "I almost feel bad taking advantage of them" before writing, "BAHAHAHAHAHA."

Live Nation had argued against their inclusion in the trial, saying the employees were making "passing references to non-ticket ancillary products — such as VIP club access, premier parking, or lawn chair rentals — sold to concertgoers at two amphitheaters" in Florida and Virginia.

The judge said the overall fan experience is relevant to the relationship between performers and their customers and some artists might not want to perform if fans were being charged too much for lawn chairs or other amenities.

Subramanian said it was no different than the harm that might occur to the film industry if movie theaters began charging $50 for concessions such as soda, candy and popcorn.

At a hearing on Tuesday, Live Nation attorney Dan Wall told the judge that the chance all states would settle their claims this week was "about zero."

Pink Floyd's "Black Strat" guitar, which was played by member David Gilmour, has sold for a record-breaking amount.

The guitar was sold at Christie's auction for the Jim Irsay collection in New York on Thursday, March 12, for $14.55 million, according to the New York Times.

The sale made the guitar the most expensive ever sold, topping Kurt Cobain's $6 million Martin D-18E acoustic guitar in 2020.

Gilmour played the guitar for Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, Wish You Were Here in 1975, Animals in 1977 and The Wall in 1979, according to Christies.com.

The guitar was first purchased by Irsay at Christie's in June 2019 for nearly $4 million, according to the auction webiste. At the time, Gilmour opened up Rolling Stone about selling the guitar.

"These guitars have been very good to me," he said to the outlet. "They're my friends. They have given me lots of music. I just think it's time that they went off and served someone else."

"For me, I can let go of it. It's going to bring a lot of people to have a look at this sale, and it's going to do that job. It's a lovely guitar," he continued. "It has been on pretty much all the Pink Floyd albums through the Seventies… it's on so much stuff, but Fender have made replica ones that they sell, and I have two or three of those that are absolutely perfect. One of those might be my future guitar of choice or even, horror of horror, maybe I'll even change the color."

The Irsay collection is being sold from March 3 to March 17 and "forms a chorus of cultural touchstones and chronicles one of the greatest collections of music, film and sports memorabilia and historic Americana ever assembled," according to the website.

"Meticulously compiled over decades by the late philanthropist, passionate music lover and owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, a portion of the proceeds of these sales will be donated to philanthropic causes supported by Jim Irsay during his lifetime," the statement continued.

In addition to the Pink Floyd guitar, instruments featured in the auction also belonged to greats like all four Beatles, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Jery Garcia, Cobain, Elton John, Prince, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, John Coltrane and Miles Davis.

How do you define a thriller? Is there an element of mystery? Are there great surprises? Sequences of suspense? What about action?

The truth is there's no one way to define a thriller — at least not with me comfortable on the couch and the dictionary way across the room. But one thing that definitely is thrilling? Clicking over to the Paramount+ app and seeing how many great movies are available.

Netflix and HBO Max may get more of the attention, but Paramount+ has quietly offered an outstanding catalogue of great movies in every genre since the day it was born. (Transformed, like a caterpillar to a butterfly, from CBS All-Access, for those of you keeping records of streaming history.) But with so many great options out there, it can be a little overwhelming at times to determine what to watch tonight.

Luckily Entertainment Weekly is here for you, and ready to answer the question: What are the best thriller movies on Paramount+?

Basic Instinct (1992)

Sharon Stone manipulates a whole room full of probably lonely cops in 'Basic Instinct'Credit: Shutterstock

This essential, sleazeball classic stars Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone in the movie that catapulted her to the A-list. The San Francisco-set murder mystery positioned Stone as bisexual crime novelist Catherine Trammell, chief suspect in her boyfriend's murder. Nick Curran (Douglas) is the detective on the case who (rather unwisely) finds himself unable to resist her.

Dutch director Paul Verhoeven films the many moments of intimacy as lewdly as possible, which earned quite a bit of notoriety. A slew of terrific character actors like Wayne Knight, George Dzundza, James Rebhorn, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Mitch Pillegi round out the cast.

Fatal Attraction (1987)

More erotic thrillers with Michael Douglas! (It was kind of his thing back in the day.) Adrian Lyne's picture is less scuzzy than Basic Instinct (it was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture) but it's still essentially violent soap opera trash. (Not a diss.)

With his wife out of town, Dan Gallagher (Douglas) has a presumptive one-night stand with Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), who then goes bananas and demands his full attention. When he tries to give her the slip, she boils his family's pet rabbit and gets knife-happy. Interestingly enough, Fatal Attraction was so successful in frightening would-be philanderers, it ended all marital infidelity in the United States. Husbands have kept their zippers up ever since.

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

Casey Affleck tries to solve a tricky crime in 'Gone Baby Gone'Credit: Claire Folger

Ben Affleck's first go as a director, Gone Baby Gone follows a boyfriend/girlfriend private investigator team (Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan) hired to find the missing child of a deadbeat mom (an Oscar-nominated Amy Ryan). Their search leads them to a local drug lord and a galaxy of lowlifes, all of whom are hiding something.

As the investigation deepens, it becomes clear that the girl's disappearance has something to do with a long-held family secret, leading to ethical gray zones that challenge the investigators' moral principles. Titus Welliver, Amy Madigan, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman keep every scene in good hands.

The Hunt for Red October (1990)

Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin in 'The Hunt for Red October'Credit: Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection

"We sail into history!" Sean Connery executed one of his best roles as a Soviet submarine commander who's either trying to defect to America or itching to start World War III. (Not much room for error there.) This was the first Jack Ryan film (and book). You may have forgotten it starred Alec Baldwin, before he became Jack Donaghy, and before Harrison Ford (then Ben Affleck, then Chris Pine, then John Krasinski) became Jack Ryan.

As with all submarine movies, there's a lot of silent cat-and-mouse maneuvering and underwater 3-D chess. John McTiernan also created a new way to shift from a foreign tongue to English without subtitles, simply by zooming in, then out, on Russian speakers. Everybody watching understood what was going on.

Red Eye (2005)

'Red Eye': Rachel McAdams waits in airport security in front of Cillian Murphy, who's probably super niceCredit: Gemma La Mana/Dreamworks

In one of the great B-pictures (compliment) from Wes Craven, Rachel McAdams stars as a hotel manager who gets embroiled in an assassination attempt on a late-night flight to Miami. (Once again, avoid Florida at all costs!) The fella in the seat next to her, a wonderfully sinister Cillian Murphy as Jackson Rippner (great name!), forces her to do his bidding, or else he'll have his people on the ground kill her father.

The hook is that a bigwig is staying at her hotel; thus, she can call and have him escorted to a specific spot. It sounds far-fetched, but it works. Will our gal outfox the professional assassin? You'll be on the edge of your upright seat!

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

Though hardcore snobs swear by the French version starring Alain Delon from 1960, Purple Noon, Anthony Minghella's highly stylized production of Patricia Highsmith's psychological thriller, is one of the most beloved movies of the 1990s for a reason. Matt Damon stars as a slick con artist who (understandably!) becomes obsessed with a strapping young playboy played by Jude Law. Things get creepy, though, when he assumes his identity.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cate Blanchett, and Gwyneth Paltrow round out the cast in this gorgeous Italian-set film, which hardly maintains a "crime doesn't pay" lesson.

To Catch a Thief (1955)

Cary Grant being all debonair and stuff in 'To Catch a Thief'Credit: Mondadori via Getty

A luxe production like The Talented Mr. Ripley certainly had predecessors like To Catch a Thief as guide posts. Alfred Hitchcock's elegant, breezy thriller stars Cary Grant as "The Cat," a notorious but retired thief, and Grace Kelly as a wealthy vacationer on the French Riviera. That the movie premiered just a year before the actress became a literal Princess in Monaco did not hurt the film's reputation.

The film contains both literal and figurative fireworks, a nail-biting opening jewel heist, a thrilling chase on seaside cliffs, and shots of Grant on a yacht (an image later parodied in Some Like It Hot). This is an all-time classic for a reason.

Witness (1985)

Harrison Ford investigates a murder, sans modern technology, in 'Witness'Credit: Moviestore/Shutterstock

For many of us, everything we know about the Amish comes from Witness. Peter Weir's remarkable thriller concerns a Philadelphia detective (Harrison Ford, in his only Oscar-nominated performance) trying to protect a kid who witnesses a murder in the city.

While entrenched in the Amish community, Detective Book (Ford) kinda-sorta falls in love with the boy's mother (Kelly McGillis), a recent widow. Crime dramas routinely try to balance plot with a romance storyline, and you often find yourself waiting for the action to kick back in. This is one of the rare ones where the relationship stuff is just as, if not more, interesting.

Where to watch Witness: Paramount+

Zodiac (2007)

Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal just before they get super obsessed in 'Zodiac'Credit: Paramount/courtesy Everett Collection

One of the most nerve-wracking movies ever made, David Fincher's investigation into the eponymous killer isn't just a great thriller, it's a fascinating look at obsession. (If there's a moral here, it's that you shouldn't work too hard, it might drive you crazy, even if you're a detective or reporter.)

Zodiac features some of the most uncannily tense scenes ever put on screen, because it effectively gets inside the heads of people (Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo) who are slowly going mad. Plus it's got a great soundtrack and awesome period clothing. The film was notoriously snubbed of all Oscar nominations, which somehow feels like part of a wider conspiracy. Unless that's paranoid thinking?

Chaz Bono's walk down the aisle was a full-circle moment.

The actor and son of pop icon Cher married his longtime partner, Shara Blue Mathes, in a glamorous Hollywood ceremony earlier this month, according to People magazine.

Bono, 57, is the sole son of Cher and the singer's late ex-husband, Sonny Bono.

"I first met Shara more than 40 years ago when we were just teenagers," Bono told People. "I think it's safe to say that not many grooms ultimately end up marrying the very first girl they ever kissed so many years later."

The March 8 ceremony, held at The Hollywood Roosevelt hotel in Los Angeles, was reportedly attended by Bono's mother Cher, People reported. Per the outlet, the Grammy-winning superstar "looked on from the front row as the couple took a romantic dip at the end of the black aisle, which was lined with glowing red candles and moody floral arrangements."

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Cher for comment.

As part of the wedding's "Hollywood Glam Formal" theme, Bono wore a black-and-white tuxedo, which he completed with a purple calla lily boutonnière. Meanwhile, Mathes donned a long-sleeved lace gown for her bridal look.

"She makes me feel complete knowing she will always be there beside me as partner, my best friend and the love of my life," Bono said of Mathes. "No matter what life brings us, we will always be safer and stronger together. … And we are home."

Bono and Mathes met as teenagers while attending the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, per People. The pair reconnected years later and rekindled their romance in January 2017.

Bono's marital bliss comes amid some family strife for Cher.

The singer's other son, Elijah Blue Allman, was arrested twice in a three-day period for incidents on Feb. 27 and March 1. Allman, Cher's son with late Allman Brothers Band singer Gregg Allman, was first charged with two counts of simple assault, criminal trespassing, criminal threatening and disorderly conduct after an alleged trespassing incident at St. Paul's School in New Hampshire.

The CEO of a popular protein bar company is speaking out in defense of his product following a recent proposed class action lawsuit over the bars' nutrition labels.

Peter Rahal, CEO and founder of David Protein, shared a letter to customers and partners on LinkedIn on Thursday, addressing the lawsuit and breaking down the science of calorie measurement.

The proposed class action suit was filed in the Southern District Court of New York and accuses Linus Technologies Inc., the food technology company behind the cult-favorite gold label protein bars, of mislabeling calories and fat.

"The lawsuit alleging that David Protein bars contain more calories and fat than stated on their nutrition labels is simply wrong," Rahal said in his letter on Thursday. "It rests on a flawed and misleading interpretation of how calories are determined for certain ingredients under U.S. food labeling regulations."

The lawsuit comes amid a rising trend of health-minded consumers reaching for high-protein and lower-sugar snacks, which as a category relies heavily on nutrition marketing and labeling.

Plaintiffs in the suit allege laboratory tests found David products contain up to 83% more calories and up to 400% more fat than stated on their labels.

Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images for The Vitamin Shoppe, FILE - PHOTO: In this Feb. 18, 2026, file photo, a product from the brand David Protein is on display in New York.

The complaint, obtained and reviewed by ABC News, calls the company's marketing practices "unlawful and deceptive," and argues that it violated Food and Drug Administration regulations by using misleading health statistics to drive sales.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs hired an accredited lab to analyze the bars, with the results allegedly differing from David's front-of-package labeling, which states that the bars contain 28 grams of protein, zero sugar, and 150 calories.

The suit claims Linus Technologies "knowingly" used numbers that would appeal to health-minded shoppers, particularly those seeking high protein with minimal calories and fat.

In his letter this week, Rahal said the laboratory testing referenced in the suit "relies on bomb calorimetry, a laboratory method that measures total heat released when food is completely burned, and applies the standard 4-4-9 caloric values for carbohydrates, protein and fat, respectively."

The David founder said that "bomb calorimetry is a recognized calorie testing method for many foods" but that the industry widely believes it is not the right method "for determining calories in foods containing certain ingredients, such as dietary fiber, certain sweeteners, and, critically for us, fat substitutes like esterified propoxylated glycerol (EPG)."

Rahal said the FDA permits "the use of six different calorie calculation methods" and allows for "specific caloric values for approved ingredients."

Ingredients such as carbs, fiber, or EPG, when burned in a calorimeter, "would appear to deliver far more calories than the body actually metabolizes," Rahal said. "In reality, these ingredients are not fully bioavailable and therefore do not yield their full caloric content when ingested."

Citing FDA rules, Rahal said the "fat content in our bars is also accurate and compliant."

"Our products are labeled correctly and in full compliance with all FDA regulations. The claims in this lawsuit are meritless and reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of basic, well-established scientific principles regarding how calories are determined under U.S. nutrition labeling standards for ingredients like EPG," he added.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages, restitution and injunctive relief. The suit does did not detail specific lots or request a recall of any products, and no regulator has announced enforcement action tied to the claims.

An avian flu outbreak, which killed several elephant seals at California's Año Nuevo State Park last month, has spread to two other mammal species, according to researchers.

Laboratory testing confirmed the virus had spread to nine additional elephant seals, a southern sea otter and a sea lion, Christine Johnson, director of the Institute for Pandemic Insights at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, and other wildlife specialists said during a media briefing on March 12.

UC Santa Cruz researcher in Hazmat suit taking nasal sample from elephant seal pup, Ano Nuevo State Park, California, USA

Scientists estimated that more than 60 marine mammals may have been infected by the virus and are currently being tested.

In total, scientists have confirmed that 16 elephant seals are infected with the HPAI H5N1 virus, commonly known as avian flu; however, Johnson noted that these numbers reflect only animals that have undergone rigorous testing.

"We know there are more animals with signs of infection that we have sampled that are being tested across the different laboratory systems," Johnson said. "There are likely more animals that will be on in the coming weeks."

Although all confirmed cases were found in mammals in San Mateo County, Año Nuevo State Park and Año Nuevo Island Reserve, Johnson noted that scientists have detected some cases "slightly to the south and to the north" of Año Nuevo, specifically in dead animals found on public beaches.

Ravens feeding on elephant seal carcass, Ano Nuevo State Park, California, USA

"It's not at all unusual that this outbreak is impacting additional species, like we are seeing in the new cases with a sea otter and a sealion," Johnson said. "H5N1 outbreaks affect a wide range of birds and mammals, and these animals all share the near-shore ecosystem. It is especially tragic when infections impact less-common species (like) the southern sea otter."

Patrick Robinson, the Año Nuevo Reserve director at UC Santa Cruz, shared that scientists have found about 47 dead seals — both pups and adults, particularly males — along the shoreline since the outbreak began.

"Although some mortality of weaned pups are expected, this year's mortality rate has been about four times higher compared to last year's," Robinson said. "The death rate in large males is basically nonexistent in most years. We don't typically see large males passing away on beaches."

UC Santa Cruz researchers in Hazmat suits heading towards elephant seal colony, Ano Nuevo State Park, California, USA

Robinson also noted that the mortality rate of elephant seals living on the Farallon Islands off the coast of San Francisco appears to be about "three times higher" compared to the deaths along the shore, based on drone surveys.

But in some good news, Robinson said the virus appears to be nonexistent among adult female elephant seals. About 80% of female seals had left the region as part of their foraging migration before the avian flu outbreak in mid-February.

"To date, no female elephant seals have been observed to be symptomatic or dead," Robinson said.

The risk of the avian flu transmitting to the general public is very low, though the disease can spread between animals and people. Scientists recommend avoiding areas with infected animals, not touching live or dead seals, and not allowing pets to approach them.

If a person encounters a sick, injured or dead marine mammal in California, Oregon or Washington, they can call the NOAA Fisheries West Coast Region Stranding Hotline at (866) 767-6114.

Utah's measles outbreak is speeding up as it spills into the eighth month, getting so bad that some local health officials have turned to talk radio to get the message about vaccination to more people.

As South Carolina seems to be getting a handle on its outbreak — the largest in the United States in three decades — measles in Utah is raging through unvaccinated children in several communities. There have been almost 100 confirmed illnesses in Utah in the last three weeks and likely many more families have been affected, experts say. More people have caught measles in the first few months of this year than all of last year.

Since measles began spreading in Utah last summer, state health officials have barely acknowledged it. Health officials in the southwest corner of the state, which still accounts for the bulk of cases, haven't been holding vaccine clinics, they say, because most residents aren't interested in getting the shots.

During the state's first media briefing March 5, state epidemiologist Dr. Leisha Nolen pleaded with residents to get vaccinated. A nurse practitioner recounted in detail several severe measles cases she's treated. A number of families who had coped with the virus "didn't realize how bad" measles was, Nolen said.

The Utah Department of Health and Human Services has its website weekly but has otherwise remained largely silent. The agency hasn't posted about the outbreak on its Facebook and X platforms since the outbreak began. The agency declined a request for interview.

In southwest Utah, a remote tight-knit community which has accounted for most of the cases, it's been a struggle to reach residents. Most people in the area are linked to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), a religious group that is wary of outsiders. Vaccination rates are very low among school-age kids.

David Heaton, public information officer for the Southwest Utah Public Health Department, said there's no main television station or newspaper in the five counties under his agency's jurisdiction. Instead, he has harnessed social media and talk radio to provide updates on the outbreak.

"We do a lot of radio spots, probably two to three times a week," he said. "Talk radio is big down here."

Heaton's messaging on measles vaccinations has evolved throughout the outbreak.

"We're trying to find ways of tweaking the message," he said. "If you don't want to get all your vaccines, at least get this one. Or we've started saying, consider who's in your circle. Are there little kids under 5 that might have a harder time healthwise if they get measles?"

Few seem to be listening.

"There hasn't been any sense of alarm or living life differently," he said. "I'm surprised by some people who I talk to informally who still haven't heard the message, which makes me wonder, are we covering all of our bases? Is there something we're not aware of?"

There's a different response among people living in the northeastern part of the state. The TriCounty Health Department, which encompasses three counties, has had five measles cases since mid-February. The agency saturated its social media with information and held two vaccine clinics.

Thirty-three people showed up to get vaccinated, said Sydnee Lyons, TriCounty Health's public information officer.

"Our community is going above and beyond in terms of asking questions and making the right decisions for their families and trying to protect not only themselves but their community members," Lyons said. "Everyone's working together."

Measles is the most contagious virus known in the world. When it infiltrates pockets of unvaccinated people, up to 9 out of 10 will become infected. People who are infected can spread the virus four days before the characteristic rash shows up.

While the virus is continuing to spread uncontrolled in the southwest part of Utah, other parts of the state — including areas closer to Salt Lake City — are now experiencing increases in cases.

According to an NBC News/Stanford University investigation, the MMR vaccination rate for kindergarteners in hard-hit Washington County is 79.2%. It's 92.6% in Salt Lake County, which had measles exposures at hospital emergency departments, a restaurant, a gas station and an aquarium last week alone. An immunization rate of 95% is needed, experts say, to achieve the level of herd immunity to prevent outbreaks.

Containing measles outbreaks relies on effective communication encouraging the public either to get vaccinated or to stay away from others until the threat passes.

In South Carolina, state epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell has held dozens of public briefings — one each week since the outbreak was declared in early October. The briefings are publicly available on the agency's website. The state rolled out mobile vaccine clinics and invited public health experts to help with contact tracing and data management.

Because Utah's public health system is decentralized, it's up to local and regional health departments to respond to outbreaks the way they see fit.

The Southwest Utah Public Health Department is not holding vaccine clinics.

"We have the capacity," Heaton said, "but there's been no surge in demand for the vaccines."
