Pink Floyd's "Black Strat" guitar, which was played by member David Gilmour, has sold for a record-breaking amount.
The guitar was sold at Christie's auction for the Jim Irsay collection in New York on Thursday, March 12, for $14.55 million, according to the New York Times.
The sale made the guitar the most expensive ever sold, topping Kurt Cobain's $6 million Martin D-18E acoustic guitar in 2020.
Gilmour played the guitar for Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, Wish You Were Here in 1975, Animals in 1977 and The Wall in 1979, according to Christies.com.
The guitar was first purchased by Irsay at Christie's in June 2019 for nearly $4 million, according to the auction webiste. At the time, Gilmour opened up Rolling Stone about selling the guitar.

"These guitars have been very good to me," he said to the outlet. "They're my friends. They have given me lots of music. I just think it's time that they went off and served someone else."
"For me, I can let go of it. It's going to bring a lot of people to have a look at this sale, and it's going to do that job. It's a lovely guitar," he continued. "It has been on pretty much all the Pink Floyd albums through the Seventies… it's on so much stuff, but Fender have made replica ones that they sell, and I have two or three of those that are absolutely perfect. One of those might be my future guitar of choice or even, horror of horror, maybe I'll even change the color."

The Irsay collection is being sold from March 3 to March 17 and "forms a chorus of cultural touchstones and chronicles one of the greatest collections of music, film and sports memorabilia and historic Americana ever assembled," according to the website.
"Meticulously compiled over decades by the late philanthropist, passionate music lover and owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, a portion of the proceeds of these sales will be donated to philanthropic causes supported by Jim Irsay during his lifetime," the statement continued.
In addition to the Pink Floyd guitar, instruments featured in the auction also belonged to greats like all four Beatles, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Jery Garcia, Cobain, Elton John, Prince, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
