In early 2024, rumors that the series was kaput swirled online, prompting HBO to release a statement that season 3 was still on the way. In the summer of 2023, creator Sam Levinson described season 3 as a "film noir," adding that Rue's journey would allow the season to "explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world."

While promoting her film *Challengers* in 2024, Zendaya confirmed to EW that the upcoming season would feature a time jump. "It's important because there's only so much high school drama you can deal with," she told us.

We now know that the series jumps ahead five years, and that Rue is wrapped up in a dicey situation involving a drug kingpin played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, the debt she (still) owes dealer Laurie (Martha Kelly), and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

It also shows Maddy helping Cassie with her online modeling, Jules reuniting with Cal (Eric Dane), and Nate being terrorized by some shady characters.
