At long last, Netflix's *Bridgerton *is back with another dramatic love story.

The first four episodes of season 4 bowed on Thursday. Jan 29, putting Luke Thompson's Benedict front and center as he chases his own romance. At a masquerade ball, he's instantly captivated by the "Lady in Silver" — but he has no idea who she is. All he can assume is that, like him, she's part of London's nobility. The truth, however, is that she's a housemaid named named Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha).

"We start with a character trope that we've seen a million times before, which is a maid who falls for someone above her station," showrunner Jess Brownell previously told **. "Benedict very much lives in a fantasy world. Sophie very much lives in a harsher reality. The idea is that, for each of them, neither of those stations are where they need to live in order to find true love."

The sparks are undeniable by the end of part 1, but social mores keep them apart. Don't worry, though: Brownell reassured fans that "the thirst will get them back together pretty quickly."

How does *Bridgerton *season 4, part 1 end?

Before we dive into Sophie and Benedict's budding romance, let's touch on what's going on elsewhere in the midseason finale. First off, Violet (Ruth Gemmell) and Lord Anderson (Daniel Francis) finally hook up. Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and John (Victor Alli), meanwhile, have a gentle discussion about her faking her "pinnacle."

Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) is dealing with her own mess. Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) loves her writing, but the gossip well has run dry now that everyone knows she's Lady Whistledown. To keep things interesting, Charlotte bets Penelope that Benedict will get married this social season, but Penelope insists he'll be the last person to say "I do."

At Lady Danbury's (Adjoa Andoh) dinner, the ladies tell Penelope the odds are in her favor, but she's not really focused on winning — she's too busy wondering if she's just being pushed around by the elite.

It's also worth noting is that the Bridgertons are getting new neighbors. The big reveal at the end of the episode is that it's Sophie's stepmother Araminta (Katie Leung) and Araminta's daughters moving in next door.

Now for Sophie and Benedict: She takes a job as a maid at Bridgerton House, while Benedict enlists Violet's help to track down his Lady in Silver from the masquerade ball. Violet soon thinks she's found a lead, believing his mystery woman might be a Miss Hollis. But Miss Hollis, it turns out, didn't attend the ball.

Despite clearly having feelings for each other, Sophie and Benedict clash over his constant presence at the house, and he decides to leave.

On a night off, Sophie and Benedict indulge the simmering tension between them and the pair kiss on the staircase. As things get hot and heavy, it seems as if Benedict will confess his love. Instead, he asks her to be his mistress. Completely crushed, Sophie takes off without a word.

Ha recently told EW* *she was "fuming" over Benedict's shocking offer. Thompson defended Benedict, saying his character knows asking Sophie to be his mistress is wrong, but that the character believes it's the only way they could be together. "I think he thinks that it could work," he said. "That he could sort of splice all these things together and make this sort of weird situation that works for him… and then it doesn't."

He added, "I don't think he thinks it's necessarily the most romantic thing to do, but it's like, 'This is me being realistic and also trying to be with you.'"

Brownell made it clear that she's on Sophie's side. "I think Sophie's reaction of being pretty damn outraged is really valid," she said. "She wanted to believe that Benedict saw her for more than her station, and that their connection was something special. So she has a real right to be very pissed."

Is there a trailer for *Bridgerton *season 4, part 2?

The trailer for part 2 of season 4 quickly addresses the tension between Benedict and Sophie, with Sophie telling him that they'd both gotten "carried away." Benedict asks, "Is that all it was to you?"

In the next clip, Sophie tells Violet she found another position, claiming her "desire to leave has nothing to do with anyone in this house." Violet wonders if Sophie is hiding something.

Benedict then talks to Mondrich (Martins Imhangbe) about Sophie, who tells him that "no matter her rank, no woman truly desires to be hidden."

From there, we see Benedict and Sophie thrust again into the throes of passion, as well as a peek at some of the faces we'll see in part 2: Violet and Lord Anderson, Francesca and Michaela (Masali Baduza), and Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate (Simone Ashley).

Brownell told EW that the new episodes will explore the fallout of Benedict's proposal. "In the little time we've had to get to know her, I think viewers can already tell that Sophie's not someone who suffers fools, or allows herself to be insulted in that way," she said. "So she's absolutely going to separate herself from Benedict a bit."
