Tony Romo got a little prophetic while trolling Swifties in 2023.
While opening up about the impact that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's romance has had on his job, the NFL commentator revealed that he once played a pretty funny trick on the pop star's fans.
"I did kind of play with the fans. I think I was like, 'And there's…' I think I said, 'his wife,'" Romo told SiriusXM's The Morning Mash Up on Thursday, referencing a December 2023 game. "I did that on purpose and people were like, 'Do you know something?'"
Laughing, Romo admitted, "I was like, 'Nah, I just wanted to make you guys think for a second.' Just mess with you a little bit."
At the time, Swift and Kelce had just made their whirlwind romance public and become a subject of public fascination, especially when it came to Swift attending games for the Kansas City Chiefs. During that December broadcast, Romo was commentating when the cameras cut to Swift and he quipped, "As you see, Kelce's wife, Taylor Swift, in the audience."

He then seemed to catch his mistake and corrected, "I'm sorry— Girlfriend!"
Another commentator laughed at Romo's blunder, joking, "Not yet."
Little did the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback know that just two years later, Swift and Kelce would actually get engaged. Turns out he was just looking too far ahead.
Elsewhere in his visit to The Morning Mash Up, host Nicole Ryan asked, "How hard was it to balance the Taylor song puns and references without going over the top?"

"Oh, it was so difficult," Romo replied, with exaggerated exhaustion. "I don't know how I got through it."
"One of the hardest parts of your job ever, really," Good quipped.
Laughing the question off, Romo denied that it was "tough," sharing that it ultimately "didn't feel any different."
Swift famously began dating Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, after he publicly stated on his New Heights podcast in July 2023 that he had tried — and failed — to connect with her at the Eras Tour show in Kansas City. The NFL star revealed that he made her a friendship bracelet with his phone number but never got the chance to hand it over. They began dating that summer and relentless media and social media coverage ensued as Swift began showing up at games to cheer him on — including the 2024 Super Bowl, where the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers.

In the midst of it all, some NFL fans voiced annoyance over Swift's presence at games and the attention that followed. During a 2024 call with the Kansas City Star, Romo made it clear that he didn't share those concerns.
"It's Taylor, she's just as big a personality as anybody in the world right now. And I think that's a great thing that she's at football games," he said at the time. "I think it just adds value. And I think our team does it the right way."

Romo also addressed his inspiration for jokingly referring to Swift as Kelce's wife, noting that someone did the same thing to him when he was in a relationship with singer Jessica Simpson. The pair dated from November 2007 through July 2009.
"Someone did that to me back in the day and they're like, 'And there's your wife. Oh, I mean, your girlfriend,'" he shared. "So sometimes the humor doesn't go over as well."
