President Donald Trump led an insurgent takeover of the Republican Party. Now one prominent MAGA dissident believes the same playbook could be used by conservative critics of the Iran war.

After resigning from the Trump administration over his opposition to the conflict, Joe Kent has been exploring how to channel anti-war sentiment into political action. Trump led the MAGA movement astray with the war, he said. War critics could take a lesson from the president and "hijack" the GOP, he told USA TODAY in an interview.

“We know that we have something here in terms of political energy,” Kent said. “We know that people are frustrated.”

Kent is at the center of growing MAGA backlash to the war, which has sparked outrage among some on the right who believe the conflict clashes with Trump's campaign pledges to avoid foreign military entanglements. He met with other prominent MAGA war dissenters last month to plot their next steps.

It's unclear how deep the appetite is for a GOP reckoning on Iran. A recent AP-NORC survey found most Republicans still back Trump on the conflict, but that support has slipped. Kent said the war could have lasting political repercussions.

A gathering he attended at the Maine home of conservative media personality Tucker Carlson fueled speculation about a new political movement centered around conservative criticism of the war. The meeting included Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Kentucky, and former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, who resigned from her position earlier this year and said she no longer supports the Republican Party.

Massie, Greene and Carlson have all clashed with Trump on Iran. Greene posted a photo on social media afterward with the caption “the movement has begun."

Kent shared details of the confab, saying an anti-war political coalition could be a force in future elections and offering different scenarios for the shape it might take, while noting it’s still in the early stages.

“We still just have to flesh out what this coalition is all about,” he said.

'No military solution'

Kent joined the Trump administration last year as the director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center.

An Army veteran and close ally of former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, another military veteran who has embraced MAGA non-interventionism, Kent said he was drawn to the president by his foreign policy platform. He resigned from the administration on March 17, less than three weeks into the Iran war.

In his resignation letter, Kent wrote about his 11 combat deployments and losing his wife, who was killed by a suicide bomber while serving with the Navy in Syria. He told Trump he opposed sending “the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives.” There have been 18 U.S. service members killed in the war, and concerns about troop morale amid complaints about living conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Five months after resigning, Kent is continuing to press his case publicly while taking tentative steps to organize politically. He told USA TODAY that the president is too focused on a formal peace deal and should simply walk away.

“There’s no military solution,” Kent said “If there was one, then he just would simply execute it.”

The White House responded by calling Kent a "quitter."

“President Trump has destroyed nearly all of Iran’s military capabilities and is crushing what’s left of its abysmal economy with the most powerful naval blockade in world history" White House spokesman Davis Ingle said in a statement. "In quitter Joe Kent’s twisted mind, that somehow means Iran is winning."

Trump told reporters after Kent's resignation that "I always thought he was a nice guy. But I always thought he was weak on security, very weak on security."

War shadows midterms

Trump has struggled to end the war. He announced a peace deal in June, but it quickly fell apart amid jockeying over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for oil shipments. Iran has continued to threaten shipping in the strait. Trump said Aug. 18 that the U.S. is not engaged in talks with Iran amid an ongoing naval blockade, suggesting a stalemate.

The unpopular war is shadowing the 2026 midterm elections, hurting Trump’s approval rating and threatening to drag down his party as it seeks to maintain control of Congress. Just 39% of voters approve of Trump's job performance in the Real Clear Politics average of recent polls. But Kent said the political fallout could extend further, with the war continuing to be a potent issue in the 2028 presidential contest.

Kent and other MAGA war critics are looking ahead and plotting how to influence future elections. Massie, Greene and Carlson also were among the first wave of prominent MAGA figures opposing the war, a group that has been growing as the conflict nears the six-month mark. Kent said the four have been in "regular contact" through phone calls and text messages. Carlson eventually suggested the in person meeting at his house.

The Maine gathering was “just kind of putting our heads together . . . like, what do we think the future is?” Kent said.

The MAGA rebels agree that the GOP establishment has failed. Where they go next remains to be seen. Carlson and Greene have talked about backing a new political party amid their criticism of Trump.

Yet while everyone gathered around Carlson’s wooden table liked “the idea of a third party,” Kent said, he noted there are significant hurdles to getting a new party on the ballot. He spoke with individuals involved in Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s 2024 independent presidential bid, who talked about the challenges and expense of getting ballot access in all 50 states.

“I don’t know how viable the third-party independent lane actually is,” Kent said.

Instead, Kent pointed to the “Trump model” in floating the idea of trying to “hijack” the Republican Party. He also suggested that an existing third party, such as the Libertarian Party, could serve as a vehicle to channel a coalition of voters who oppose foreign conflicts and want to focus on domestic needs.

Those scenarios would require unifying behind an anti-war candidate. But nobody at Carlson’s house was eager to be that person, Kent said.

“We all kind of did the ‘One, two, three not it,’” he said.

Carlson was a “hard no,” Kent said, while Greene ruled out running in an interview this month with Politico.

After twice losing races for Congress in Washington state against Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, Kent said "I've got that out of my system" and won't be a candidate again. Kent’s campaigns generated controversy. The reported in 2022 on his ties to right-wing extremists, which Democrats pointed to in opposing his nomination to lead the National Counterterrorism Center.

GOP 'reset'

Whoever runs, Kent suggested there could be an effort to “reset” the Republican Party on foreign policy in the 2028 presidential primary. Vice President JD Vance is a likely contender for the party’s nomination, but Kent said he could face a “credibility” problem after serving in an administration that launched a new war despite Trump campaigning against foreign entanglements.

“It’s going to be hard to go to the 77 million voters who voted for Trump who are probably going to be mad and feel a certain degree of betrayal, and say ‘Yeah I was a part of that but trust me it’s going to be different this time,’” Kent said. “I just think that’s going to be really, really hard.”

Vance has been a skeptic of American military intervention abroad, and Trump said his vice president was "less enthusiastic" about launching the Iran war. He has since defended the conflict, though, while working to negotiate its end. He led negotiations on a peace deal that eventually collapsed.

MAGA war critics have faced their own backlash, with Trump targeting many of them. Kent also has been criticized for his rhetoric on Israel.

In his resignation letter, Kent wrote that "we started this war due due to pressure from Israel and it's powerful lobby," and went on to say that Israeli officials and members of the media "deployed a misinformation campaign that wholly undermined your America First platform and sowed pro-war sentiments." Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said the letter displayed "virulent anti-Semitism."

Kent said he's focused on the Israeli government and "could care less what the religion is."

"I don't care if they all go to the same church as me, if they're from a foreign country I don't want them dictating our foreign policy," he said.

Real Time host Bill Maher has revealed there is one Hollywood A-lister who will never do his show again after a heated showdown about Islamic extremism back in 2014.

On Monday’s (August 17) episode of his Club Random podcast, Maher spoke with Iranian-American comedian Max Amini and revealed that Ben Affleck has refused to return to his HBO show since a tense argument broke out during his 2014 appearance.

During the Real Time episode in question, the panel was discussing the rise of Islamic extremism. Maher said on the show that he’d received a lot of hate for saying that “liberals need to stand up for liberal principles,” per The Daily Beast.

“All I’m saying is that liberal principles like freedom of speech, freedom to practice any religion you want without fear of violence, freedom to leave a religion, equality for women, equality for minorities, including homosexuals… these are liberal principles that liberals applaud for,” Maher stated. “But then when you say in the Muslim world, this is what’s lacking, then they get upset.”

Affleck took issue with comments made by Maher and fellow guest, podcaster Sam Harris, accusing them of equating extremists with everyday people who follow the practices of Islam. The Argo actor called their arguments “racist,” “gross,” and “nuts,” and told Maher, “It’s like saying ‘those shifty Jews.'”

Maher said on the latest Club Random podcast that he’s asked Affleck to come back on his show “every year” since then, though the Good Will Hunting star has not accepted the invite.

“I mean it’s… I love him,” Maher said. “But we just are gonna disagree on that one. I may, you know, if I talked to him privately or… it’s been 12 years, maybe I think there’s a middle ground.”

The comedian said that certain comments “got exaggerated” and “for some reason it got emotional.” He admitted that people “love” those kinds of deeply personal debates. “More people mentioned that episode to me than anything,” he stated. “It wasn’t the best episode we ever had, but it got emotional with a movie star. That’s America.”

Harris, who also faced Affleck’s wrath during the heated debate, previously appeared on Club Random in 2022. During his appearance, he revealed that he and Affleck had “buried the hatchet” privately. Maher said he hasn’t had that opportunity.

Amini quipped that Affleck, who has been divorced twice, could benefit from a “temporary marriage,” a private and verbal fixed-term marriage contract that is practiced in Twelver Shia Islam.

“That’s perfect, the way that came around to that,” Maher said while laughing. “That’s hysterical. You’re right. If anybody could use the temporary marriage… just for J.Lo.” Affleck married Jennifer Lopez in 2022 after the pair rekindled their romance; they divorced in 2024.

I wish I had a relationship where my partner showed me off on Instagram like David Beckham does Victoria Beckham. Not just a strategically cropped birthday post, either, but a full-on holiday video, 29-year anniversary declaration, and, naturally, a cinematic glimpse of my hair looking excellent. And while David's most recent tribute is undeniably sweet, it’s VB’s XXL ponytail we cannot stop staring at. She is, after all, the ultimate hair chameleon.

In said tribute, the fashion-meets-beauty mogul debuted what could be her longest hairstyle in years, with her strands pulled into a sleek, waist-skimming ponytail that falls almost to her hips. And not only that, but it also looks noticeably lighter, too, with warm blonde tones running through the lengths—a soft departure from the brunette shades she's favored in recent years.

Paired with what looks to be a black lace bodysuit and matching flowing skirt, it’s giving low-effort, high-glamour holiday dressing.

For context, here’s a look at Victoria’s hair length from December 2025:

And here it is now:

She’s either discovered a miracle hair growth serum or a very clever set of extensions. The latter is the more realistic of the two, but who knows…

David posted the video on Instagram to mark 29 years since the pair got together, returning to the Portofino hotel where they stayed before anyone knew they were dating. “29 years ago we came to portofino to this hotel before anyone knew we were dating, and here we are back again 🩵 @victoriabeckham Portofino 97 🩵,” he wrote to caption the post.

Sweet!

Almost three decades together, a European summer holiday and a Rapunzel hairstyle to boot? Now the Beckhams are really showing off.

Dua Lipa has some new rules when it comes to bachelorette party attire. The singer, who recently tied the knot with Callum Turner, flouted the traditional dress code while celebrating her friend’s upcoming nuptials.

On August 17, Lipa shared a carousel of photos from her bestie Ella Jenkin’s bachelorette trip. The two of them, along with a few other guests, traveled to Portofino, Italy, where they snacked on sorbet, enjoyed a champagne-fueled pajama party, and snapped more than a few selfies.

“Gaaaaaals trip bc Ella’s getting HITCHED,” Lipa, 30, wrote in the caption. The “Levitating” artist sported a white satin minidress in multiple photos, contrary to the tradition of wedding guests abstaining from the shade. This rule can occasionally extend to other wedding-related festivities, such as bridal showers or bachelorette parties.

Lipa paired her plunging halter-neck frock with a shiny silver clutch, wearing her dark waist-length hair in a middle part. Her makeup, meanwhile, consisted of rosy blush and pink-nude lip liner.

Last month, Lipa made her marriage to Turner wardrobe-official. On July 8, she stepped out in New York City sporting a sentimental button-down.

Lipa’s white shirt featured the initials “DLT” embroidered in cursive font across the front pocket. She completed her look with a pair of jeans, a black tank top, and a leather belt, along with oversized sunglasses and platform flip-flops.

Lipa and Turner married in a lavish three-day ceremony in Palermo. They spent their honeymoon in Italy as well, with the pop star sharing pictures from their romantic getaway. On June 29, she flashed her wedding band in an Instagram carousel.

“Heaven on earth,” Lipa captioned the photo dump, which also included a selfie with her spouse.

Her wedding band was visible in three separate photos: In the first, Lipa sported a yellow bikini trimmed with hot pink lace while playing cards. The second saw her naked in a bathtub, her arms folded as she rested on its marble rim. Finally, in a seaside selfie, Lipa paired a black bikini top with denim cutoffs, cradling a cocktail in her left hand.

Senator presses Hegseth, Caine for commitment to keep US military out of the midterm elections

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday to confirm he won’t send U.S. troops to polling places during November’s midterm elections, as Democrats have raised concerns that the Trump administration could use the military to interfere with the vote.

“I’d ask you to confirm a simple statement: the Department of Defense will not send Federal troops to the polls or to seize election materials of any kind,” Slotkin wrote to Hegseth and to Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in letters Tuesday.

The Pentagon said in an email that it will respond directly to Slotkin, as it does with all congressional correspondence. The Joint Chiefs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Slotkin told The that Trump has been laying the groundwork to claim the midterms were stolen. She noted that Trump contemplated using the military to seize voting machines after his loss in 2020 and has deployed the National Guard to cities against the wishes of Democratic leaders. He also deployed active duty Marines to Los Angeles during his immigration crackdown in 2025.

“He’s very clearly laying the breadcrumbs to be able to say the day after the election that he didn’t really lose the House or he didn’t really lose the Senate,” Slotkin said.

Slotkin asked Hegseth during an April congressional hearing if he would follow orders to seize ballots. Hegseth called the question a “gotcha hypothetical,” but said, “I’ve never been ordered to do anything illegal, and I won’t.”

White House chief of staff Susie Wiles denied in a Vanity Fair interview last year that Trump would use the military to suppress voting in the midterms.

“I say it is categorically false, will not happen. It’s just wrongheaded,” she said.

Federal law prohibits the deployment of armed federal forces to election locations unless “necessary to repel armed enemies of the United States.” If any element of the military were to get involved, it would likely be the National Guard under state control.

In 2020, Gen. Mark Milley, then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, responded to a similar letter from Slotkin, then a congresswoman.

“I believe deeply in the principle of an apolitical U.S. military,” Milley wrote. “In the event of a dispute over some aspect of the elections, by law U.S. courts and the U.S. Congress are required to resolve any disputes, not the U.S. military."

Florida has reported 10 locally acquired cases of dengue fever this year, including the first in Pinellas County in 15 years

Dengue fever, also known as “breakbone fever” due to the extreme body aches it can cause, is spread by infected mosquitoes; severe symptoms include fever, rash and body aches

The CDC advises wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites in at-risk areas

Cases of dengue fever — commonly called “breakbone fever” due to the debilitating body aches it can cause — are spreading in Florida, with one county reporting its first locally acquired case in 15 years.

So far this year, eight people in Florida’s Hillsborough County and two in Pinellas County have locally contracted the mosquito-borne illness, which is not native to Florida. This marks the first time in the latter county that the disease has spread locally in over a decade.

Most cases of dengue in the U.S. occur in people who contracted the disease — which is spread by the bite of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquito — elsewhere, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says.

“Pinellas doesn’t have any modern history of having dengue in the county,” Alyssa Berro, the county’s mosquito control manager, told WUSF. “So this is one of those cases [where] somebody has returned from somewhere they got bit. And then got bit by our mosquitoes, which then started the transmission in this area.”

In Hillsborough, officials say the eight locally acquired cases were reported in a two-week period.

There have been 1,471 cases of dengue reported in the U.S. so far this year, according to the most recent data.

About 25% of those who are bitten by an infected mosquito will get sick, and cases can range from mild to severe. Per the CDC, symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, rash and body pains in the muscles and joints. Treatment includes acetaminophen, rest and fluids.

In March the CDC issued an alert about a “ a higher-than-expected number of dengue cases among U.S. travelers,” which is generally how the disease makes its way stateside.

The best way to treat dengue is to avoid dengue, the CDC says, advising those in at-risk areas to wear long sleeves and pants, and to use an insect repellent with DEET, Picaridin oil, lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol. The latter two ingredients are not recommended for children under 3 years of age.

The tight end is launching Tekta, a new agency to connect advertisers with college athletes and universities.

The career move comes just after his wedding to Taylor Swift.

It’s a big year of change for Travis Kelce. Just a month after tying the knot with Taylor Swift, the NFL player has announced an unexpected career move.

According to a report from Variety, the tight end is partnering with French advertising company Publicis Groupe. They will collaborate on the launch of a new agency called Tekta, linking advertisers with college athletes and universities with the help of talent rep 3 Arts Sports. The venture comes amid a push for “name, image and likeness (NIL)” campaigns under new rules that allow college student-athletes to earn income from endorsements, appearances, and social media deals.

“The fluid NIL and college sports landscape has everyone scrambling to keep up,” said Kelce, in a statement. “I am excited to leverage my lived experience and professional perspective to help close the gap for brands and athletes alike. Streamlining the process will allow everyone to fully realize the potential of engaging across the board, including the significant opportunity that lies in those untapped sports and undiscovered personalities.”

Suzy Deering, CEO, Publicis Sports, also made a statement: “Many of our clients are looking for ways to connect with customers at a local level, while also delivering scale and laddering up to a regional or national program. This has been challenging—if not impossible—to do from a brand standpoint, given all the pain points. Through the unique combination of Publicis Sports, Travis and 3 Arts Sports, we’re able to bring our strengths together to do this seamlessly for our clients.”

Kelce and Swift married last month on July 3 at a lavish, private ceremony at Madison Square Garden. Since then, Kelce has returned to Kansas for the upcoming NFL season. According to some reports and speculation, this season may be his last as a football player.

Kelce has also begun branching out into acting in recent years, appearing in Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie and Happy Gilmore 2.

“I don’t necessarily know if I’ll take it and run with it when I’m done playing,” he told GQ of his acting ambitions, “but I know that I want to stay around the football world as a profession and then dabble in other areas as well.”

He added, “I do want to have free time. I do want to have the ability to be around my family. I don’t want to get too busy to where I’m traveling all over the world and I’m not present at home.”
