Douglas, 81, also shared some memories of working with iconic director Oliver Stone

Michael Douglas revealed that his longtime friend Jack Nicholson used to tease him about one very specific acting technique.

Douglas, 81, recounted the amusing memory during a Q&A before a special screening of his 1987 film Wall Street in New York City on Jan. 31. During the conversation, Douglas shared that Nicholson, 88, used to give him a hard time about his "hair acting."

"[The character's] hair has always been an important part of my acting," Douglas explained. "It's just funny how that kind of thing helps."

"Jack Nicholson always used to give me s--t about hair acting. [He'd say], 'What's with his hair acting?' I said, 'You should talk,' "he added jokingly.

At another point during the Wall Street Q&A, Douglas spoke about the experience of landing the iconic role of Gordon Gekko in the 1987 classic — and revealed that he recently learned he hadn't been the first actor to be offered the part.

"I saw an article recently that said that [director] Oliver Stone first went to Warren Beatty — who passed on it — and then to Richard Gere, who passed on it. I didn't know any of that. You always like to think you were [the] one," he said.

"I didn't know Oliver and I read the script and it was serious, serious work," he continued. "So I was really happy … You don't get many good parts in your life."

He added that he thinks he ultimately got the part because he had personal familiarity with a few key aspects of the character.

"I guess when Oliver was asked, he [said he] was looking for an actor that had some business acumen, and because I was also a producer, [and] I did grow up in New York City — went to Allen-Stevenson School and then I went to prep schools — so I had a familiarity with [the] East Coast and that kind of life … I understood that lifestyle. I guess that's why he chose [me]."

Douglas also revealed that Stone treated his actors as if they were "in the trenches."

"He pushed actors," he explained. "And his record of successes with actors is quite impressive. So I'm deeply, deeply appreciative of the fact that it gave me part and the fact that he pushed me to another level."

"The truth is in Oliver's career — you start with [James] Woods and Salvador, Tom Cruise and Born on the Fourth of July, Kevin Costner and JFK, Val Kilmer and The Doors, my performance — I'm sure missing a whole slew of actors who have given their best performance with Oliver Stone," he also said.

Olympic opening ceremonies are traditionally unifying, non-political events—a chance for athletes from around the world to introduce their teams before the competition begins.

But when Vice President J.D. Vance appeared on the stadium's big screen during the kickoff of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Games on Friday, the unmistakable sound of boos and jeers broke out among the crowd of 65,000 people.

Read More: How Europe Can Find Its Strength in 2026

While President Donald Trump seemed to brush off the reaction, telling reporters on Air Force One, "That's surprising because people like him…He doesn't get booed in this country," recent polls suggest that it's not just Vance who has a problem in Europe.

A new YouGov poll released Feb. 6 found that favorable views of the U.S. among Western European nations have fallen sharply in recent months, following Trump's aggressive attempts to annex Greenland, his Administration's ongoing trade war with most of its European allies, and a years-long divide over the future of NATO and European security.

Perhaps predictably, the biggest impact was seen in Denmark. Some 84% of Danes now hold an unfavourable view of the U.S., compared with 70% in November 2025 and an average of 36% during former President Joe Biden's term. Only 26% of Danes view the U.S. as an ally or friendly nation, compared with 80% in July 2023.

The same trend is seen across Western Europe, in countries that were once considered U.S. allies. In Spain, only 39% view the U.S. as a friend or ally, down from 64% in early 2023. In Germany, the number is 41%, down from 65%; in Britain, 46%, down from 69%; and in France and Italy—53% and 52%, respectively—said the same, each down from 67%.

A closer look at the data shows that Europeans' views of the United States are strongly influenced by their views of Trump. A January poll by YouGov found that in Britain, only 18 percent of people have a favorable view of the President, whereas in Italy and Spain, only 15 percent and 19 percent do.

That shift has coincided with a change in U.S. policy toward Europe. Early in Trump's second term, it became clear that the Administration would treat Europe differently from its predecessors, and that Vance would be a leading critic of European policies. In an antagonistic speech at the Munich Security Conference in February 2025, Vance criticized European nations for their policies on free speech and argued that the continent's gravest danger was not Russia or China, but their own governments, which he deemed overly restrictive of free speech. The Trump Administration diverged from European allies on the war in Ukraine, trade, and immigration, too.

The strain between the U.S. and Europe was heightened in recent months as Trump increased his efforts to acquire Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

After Trump refused to rule out military action to take control of the island, the United States' NATO allies warned such an action would mean the death of the alliance. When troops from Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Netherlands participated in joint military exercises with Denmark on the island, Trump responded by imposing tariffs on all participating countries.

He eventually removed the tariffs after reaching a "framework agreement" with NATO regarding the island's future.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Wednesday about the U.S. talks with Iran, his office said Saturday, as concerns remain high about possible regional conflict.

"The prime minister believes that all negotiations must include limiting the ballistic missiles and ending support for the Iranian axis," Netanyahu's office said in a brief statement.

The U.S. and Iran held indirect talks on Friday in Oman that appeared to return to the starting point on how to approach discussions over Tehran's nuclear program.

Trump said the United States had "very good" talks and said more were planned for early next week. The U.S. was represented by Mideast special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to use force to compel Iran to reach a deal on the nuclear program after earlier sending the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and other warships to the region amid Tehran's crackdown on nationwide protests that killed thousands and saw tens of thousands of others detained.

Gulf Arab nations fear an attack could spark a regional war that would drag them in as well, with memories fresh of Israel launching its 12-day war on Iran last June.

For the first time in negotiations with Iran, the U.S. on Friday brought its top military commander in the Middle East to the table. U.S. Navy Adm. Brad Cooper, head of the military's Central Command, then visited the USS Abraham Lincoln on Saturday with Witkoff and Kushner, the command said in a statement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told journalists Friday that "nuclear talks and the resolution of the main issues must take place in a calm atmosphere, without tension and without threats."

Araghchi said diplomats would return to their capitals, signaling this round of negotiations was over.

It remains unclear what terms Iran is willing to negotiate at the talks. Tehran has maintained that these talks will only be on its nuclear program.

However, the Al Jazeera satellite news network reported that diplomats from Egypt, Turkey and Qatar offered Iran a proposal in which Tehran would halt enrichment for three years, send its highly enriched uranium out of the country and pledge to "not initiate the use of ballistic missiles."

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday that the talks needed to include all those issues.

An Ohio man has been charged with threatening to kill Vice President JD Vance while he was visiting his home state last month. But the man's lawyer said his health makes it unlikely he would have been able to carry out the threat.

In addition to the charge for threatening Vance, prosecutors also charged Shannon Mathre with possessing digital files depicting child sexual abuse that were discovered during the investigation. That second charge carries a much stiffer potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison. The charge related to the threats could lead to a maximum five-year sentence.

Lawyer Neil McElroy said that Mathre's health challenges would have been apparent to anyone in the courtroom Friday when he pleaded not guilty to the charges, so he doesn't think the threat charge makes sense. McElroy said he couldn't comment on the charge related to the possession of child sexual abuse files because prosecutors haven't yet provided any details about that at this early stage of the case.

"Anyone that spends any time in a room with Mr. Mathre or has any knowledge of his condition -- physical condition, mental condition -- can see that it's a farce," McElroy said. He declined to go into detail about Mathre's health challenges, but the lawyer said that Mathre has "some mental disabilities and a variety of other conditions."

Still, the Justice Department and Secret Service took the threat very seriously after Mathre said "I am going to find out where he (the vice president) is going to be and use my M14 automatic gun and kill him."

The indictment filed in court doesn't offer many details about the threat or the images he allegedly possessed, but the Secret Service said the investigation went beyond the online threat to also examine Mathre's actions and behavior. The 33-year-old Toledo man's Samsung phone was seized on Jan. 21 as part of the investigation.

"Our attorneys are vigorously prosecuting this disgusting threat against Vice President Vance," Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. "You can hide behind a screen, but you cannot hide from this Department of Justice."

David M. Toepfer, who is the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, said "hostile and violent threats made against the Vice President, or any other public official, will not be tolerated in our district."

Another Ohio man was charged last month after officials say he broke windows at Vance's Ohio home not long after the Vice President returned to Washington following a weekend visit to Ohio. The Secret Service arrested William D. DeFoor, 26, as he ran from Vance's home on Jan. 5. Vance is currently in Milan, Italy, attending the start of the Winter Olympic Games.

The Secret Service agent in charge of the Toledo office, Matthew Schierloh, said there should be zero tolerance for any kind of political violence in this country.

"The safety and security of those we protect is paramount to everything we do," Schierloh said. "Thanks to vigilant members of the public and the tenacious work of our special agents, a comprehensive joint investigation was conducted, resulting in the arrest of a defendant for making threats against the Vice President."

Mathre is doing back in court on Wednesday for a hearing to determine whether he will remain in custody as the case moves forward.
