Candace Cameron Bure exclusively told PEOPLE that she's "always there" for her former Full House costar Lori Loughlin following her split from Mossimo Giannulli

"She's one of my dearest friends," Bure said

A source previously told PEOPLE that "things have never been the same" since Loughlin and Giannulli "weathered the college admission fallout and the prison sentences together"

Candace Cameron Bure and Lori Loughlin still have each other's backs.

While catching up with PEOPLE at the 33rd Annual Movieguide Faith & Values Awards Gala on Friday, Feb. 6, Bure, 49, revealed that she's been there to support her former Full House costar, 61, since her split from estranged husband Mossimo Giannulli.

"I talked to Lori," Bure said. "And she's one of my dearest friends, so I'm always there for her."

Back in October, PEOPLE confirmed that Loughlin and Giannulli — parents to daughters Olivia Jade, 26, and Isabella Rose, 27 — had called it quits after nearly 28 years of marriage.

"They are living apart and taking a break from their marriage," Loughlin's representative, Elizabeth Much, shared at the time. "There are no legal proceedings at this time."

Soon after, a source told PEOPLE that the rocky last few years for the couple — during which they were accused of paying $500,000 to get their daughters into the University of Southern California in 2019 before later pleading guilty to wire and mail fraud — had "put a strain on their marriage."

Ultimately, Loughlin spent two months in jail and was ordered to pay a $150,000 fine and complete 150 hours of community service, while Giannulli served a five-month sentence, paid a $250,000 fine and was ordered to do 250 hours of community service.

"Things have never been the same" after the couple "weathered the college admission fallout and the prison sentences together," the insider said. "It's not a happy situation for [Loughlin]. They're in very different places right now, and it's unlikely that they'll find their way back together."

More recently, another source told PEOPLE that Loughlin is "still extremely angry" with her estranged husband as they move ahead with their divorce and that she and Giannulli, 62, have been living completely "separate lives."

Through it all, Bure has supported her longtime friend, telling the Today show in 2019 that she and the rest of the Full House cast would "always be there for each other."

"It's too personal to us, and we would never want to talk about someone that's such a dear and close friend," the actress continued when asked about Loughlin's involvement in the college admissions scandal at the time. "I've already said that we are family and we stand by each other and pray for each other and we'll always be there for each other."

The following year, Bure shared a photo of a note seemingly written by Loughlin in celebration of the one-year anniversary of wrapping production on the series Fuller House.

"Dearest Candace, Congratulations on a great run! Have a fabulous last week. I love you and miss you," the note read.

Bure later confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that the note was indeed from her former costar and that "she [Loughlin] sent me flowers and I believe a few other people some flowers."

She added, "It was so nice to feel and have her presence there at the show ... Yeah, it was really special."

Then, in May 2021, Bure told Daily Blast Live that she had talked to Loughlin "many times" since her release from prison a few months prior, adding that "she's doing well" despite keeping a low profile.
