- *The Night Agent *season 3* *hit Netflix on Thursday, Feb. 19.

- It follows Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) as his new mission pulls him into yet another massive conspiracy.

- The season finale doesn't exactly serve justice.

In the world of *The Night Agent*, nothing is ever what it seems.

Season 3, which debuted on Feb. 19, entangles FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) in a spiderweb of financial crimes, terrorist attacks, and political corruption that reaches the highest levels of power.

Below, we break down the ending of *The Night Agent *season 3 and explain how all the pieces fit together.

What is *The Night Agent *season 3 about?

*The Night Agent *season 3 begins with Flight PIMA 12, a plane taken down by a missile that kills everyone on board. The attack is blamed on Raul Zapata (Alfonso Dosal) and his terrorist group, the L.F.S.

Meanwhile, Peter is tasked with tracking down Jay Batra (Suraj Sharma), an analyst at the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Shots were fired at his home, and he's suspected of stealing classified intel and killing his supervisor, Benjamin Wallace (Michael Masini).

This manhunt soon collides with financial journalist Isabel De Leon (Genesis Rodriguez) and billionaire power broker Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum), who Peter made a deal with in season 2.

How does this all intersect with the PIMA 12 attack? We'll get there.

Who is Jay Batra?

Jay is the FinCEN analyst who investigated suspicious transfers from U.S.-based shell companies to a crypto wallet connected to the L.F.S. Jay's boss, Wallace, demanded he not investigate those transfers. A fight ensues, leaving Wallace dead.

After Peter scoops up Jay in Istanbul, Jay reveals that he suspects someone on American soil may have funded the L.F.S. attack.

Could it have been Monroe? Peter certainly thinks so, what with Monroe calling him in search of Jay. Also, one of the shell companies involved in the transfers was CorePoint Dynamics, which Peter discovers is linked to Monroe.**

Is Monroe funding the L.F.S.?

No, though we do learn that he has a history with Zapata.

Decades before, Monroe was blackmailed by the CIA into becoming a mole in Zapata's Mexico City operation. The intel he provided would later help the CIA broker an arms deal with Zapata.

While in Mexico City, Monroe fell in love with one of Zapata's employees and used her to gain intel. Later, Zapata had her killed, suspecting her of being the mole. Before she died, she gave birth to Isabel — and Monroe is revealed to be the father.

Monroe's dalliance with intelligence helped inspire his own career as a power broker, and in season 3 we learn he's sitting on a massive archive of dirt that could expose a lot of powerful people — including President Richard Hagan (Ward Horton).**

How is the White House and first family involved?

Jay's intel exposes illegal campaign donations funneled through shell companies and Walcott Capital, a bank that we'll be discussing more shortly.

It turns out Monroe worked with First Lady Jenny Hagan (Jennifer Morrison) to get her husband elected. In exchange for $6 million in illegal campaign contributions, Jenny agreed to provide intelligence to Monroe in the form of the president's daily briefs.

"She thinks she's doing it for a good cause and doesn't really understand the deal with the devil that she's just made," Morrison told **.

But things go belly up when she gets in an argument with Henry Mott (Steven Robertson), the White House butler who's been helping her take photos of the briefs. Their conflict spirals out of control, resulting in Secret Service agent Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola) shooting him dead.

"[Jenny] gets caught in that moment, and her instinct is to survive by saying he has a gun," Morrison explained. "She's not like a criminal mastermind to have a plan for that. She's just now way too deep and has to deal with it."

By the penultimate episode, Jenny confesses everything to Richard. Instead of exposing her, he chooses to protect her. "All of the shady decisions that they make after that are coming from a place of him choosing her over the presidency, truly," the actress said.

What is Walcott Capital?

So, how is this all connected? Through Walcott, naturally.

Walcott represents both Monroe and Zapata's domestic banking network, and Walcott banker Freya Myers (Michaela Watkins) was taking money from both of them to prevent their criminal transactions from being investigated.

It was Freya who ordered Wallace to stop Jay from investigating the suspicious transfers, hiring a hitmen to take out those who could expose her.

What happens at the end of *The Night Agent *season 3?

After Jenny comes clean to her husband about her deal with Monroe, the president demands that he be killed. After he's dispatched, Isabel and Jay crack his database of dirt, revealing all of the first family's shady dealings.

But Isabel can only reveal her findings if Freya goes on record for her story. Freya is reluctant at first, but after finding out the president has sent his own death squad after her, she agrees, admitting that the Hagans used her division at Walcott to funnel campaign funds illegally.

Being the president and all, Richard pardons himself and Jenny. And, this being the 21st century, they quickly land a lucrative media deal to help keep their reputations intact upon leaving the White House.

"When it all goes south and they're not able to cover their tracks and they're ultimately going to be held responsible for their crimes in some way, they kind of own it, you know?" Morrison told EW of the Hagans' end. "I mean, they own it in a really brazen way, too, by pardoning themselves."

As for Peter, he decides to take a break for a while… though it's clear he won't be out of action for long.
