Shia LaBeouf and Mia Goth have gone their separate ways after a 13-year on-and-off relationship.

Days after LaBeouf was arrested on battery charges at Mardi Gras in New Orleans, PEOPLE has confirmed that the couple quietly separated last year.

LaBeouf and Goth met in 2012, and 10 years later they welcomed a daughter together. Along the way, they took several breaks but reunited.

"Their relationship has always been complicated," a source told PEOPLE in a Feb. 18 statement. "They weren't getting along and had a lot of drama last year."

Adding that Goth "encouraged" the *Holes* alum to move out of their Los Angeles home and to New Orleans, the source said, "She loves him, but she also doesn't need him. She's very independent. She has her own life, her own career, and her priority is their daughter. Shia loves their daughter and stays in touch."

Representatives for Goth and LaBeouf did not immediately respond to *'*s request for comment.

The news of the couple's split comes on the heels of LaBeouf's Feb. 17 arrest. The *Transformers* alum faces two counts of simple battery following an alleged altercation with two men outside a Royal Street establishment that occurred during New Orleans' Mardi Gras celebrations.

Authorities told * *that officers were called to the scene just after midnight, when LaBeouf was ejected from the establishment for alleged aggressive behavior that was causing a disturbance.* *Per the police, one of the men reported that once they were outside, LaBeouf struck them several times with his closed fists. The other claimed that the actor punched him in the nose.

In their statement to EW, police said several onlookers got involved and held LaBeouf down until officers arrived on the scene, at which point the actor was transported to a hospital and, upon being discharged, was arrested. The following day, he was spotted dancing at Mardi Gras celebrations.

He later addressed the arrest with a two-word social media post, writing on X, "Free me."

LaBeouf and Goth first crossed paths while filming Lars von Trier's film *Nymphomaniac: Vol. II *in 2012. They garnered attention three years later when a video of the pair having a heated argument made the rounds on social media. In 2016, they appeared to tie the knot in an intimate Las Vegas ceremony, though officials later confirmed that they were not legally married and merely performed a "commitment ceremony."

In 2018, a spokesperson for LaBeouf announced that the couple had "filed for divorce." Around the same time, the *Honey Boy *actor was romantically linked to singer FKA Twigs. The couple dated for more than a year, but afterwards the singer filed a lawsuit alleging that LaBeouf sexually and physically assaulted her during their relationship. LaBeouf has consistently denied the allegations.

Their legal battle concluded last year when Twigs agreed to drop her sexual assault and battery lawsuit after reaching a private settlement with the actor outside of court.

In 2020, LaBeouf and Goth seemed to have reconciled, as they were photographed together wearing wedding bands. Two years later, they welcomed their daughter, Isabel.

LaBeouf confirmed their child's birth in an August 2022 letter shared with *Variety*, writing, "Mia, my wife, and I have found each other again and are journeying toward a healthy family with love and mutual respect."
