**This article contains spoilers for *The Night Agent* season 3, episode 9, "Lockstep."**
The most intense fight scene in *The Night Agent*'s third season happens to be star Gabriel Basso's favorite, but it didn't come without its challenges… or changes.
In episode 9, "Lockstep," Basso's night agent Peter Sutherland, Secret Service agent Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola), and Adam (David Lyons) — the president's former Army buddy whom he's sent to partner with Peter — follow a lead into a criminal weapons-dealing organization to a port in New Jersey.
The three find their targets when they arrive at the port, but things take a turn when Peter leaves Chelsea and Adam to get closer to the men, who are in the process of loading explosives onto a truck. Peter learns that several such trucks are planned to go to various locations throughout New York City. When one truck leaves the shipping center, they know they have to stop it.

After a shootout, Peter jumps onto the back of the getaway truck, kickstarting the fight sequence and the first of several changes to the original concept of the scene.
In the version that made it into the season, Peter quickly throws the first of the two criminals in the van off the back, leaving him with only one adversary: the driver. "Originally, the fight in the back with the other guy was way longer," Basso says, explaining that they moved what would have been that fight to the front of the van, and then the second portion into the water. "It evolved a lot."
The star explains that at first, he was supposed to fight the driver, take the truck into the water, and then immediately swim out. But the team quickly realized "there's no way someone's fighting Peter while driving," Basso says. He adds that he was "pretty heavily involved in pitching" the fight's move from the van to the water. "I was just thinking visually, something that would be really cool and unique and, like, stressful."

In the scene, Peter overtakes the wheel from the driver — who has started the timer for the explosives in the back — and careens the vehicle right into the water.
Basso notes that while the sequence was choreographed, by the time the nine-hour shoot came around, the chaos of the day left room for improvisation. Because the fight occurs while the van is sinking in real time, "it presented a lot of different timing issues," Basso says. "Sometimes it would sink too fast. Sometimes we wouldn't be caught up in the choreography because it was tough to move in the water."
He adds, "The beats were kind of scripted, but you know, when it's sinking and when there's so much going on… it just became like, okay, whatever happens, happens — just roll with it, throw each other around this van."

Peter ultimately takes down his foe and escapes the van just in time before the truck explodes underwater. The agent gets out mostly unscathed, though the actors experienced a bit more damage.
"We were in there for about eight or nine hours doing that, [stunt actor Austen Brewer] and I, so it was tough. It was really hard, honestly, on your eyes," Basso recalls. "It really burned."
The duo were in the water for so long, Basso says, that "Austen's coat changed color."
"It went from like a dark brown or something to like light red, and our eyes were really burning," he says. "It was actually pretty brutal. But I think we got a really sick fight out of it."
