Winter is also the season of increased screen time, so if you're looking to reduce scrolling and optimize your selection process, read on for EW's list of the 22 best romantic movies on Netflix.**

Twenty years after breaking up, former high-school sweethearts Jim (Mark Duplass, who also wrote the script) and Amanda (Sarah Paulson) bump into each other in their California hometown and end up spending the day — and night — together. As they update each other on what's transpired in their lives in the years since they last spoke, Jim and Amanda reminisce together about the people they used to be while attempting to understand the people they have become. A slice of life film that offers a glimpse into the optimism of youthful infatuation, and the bitter realities of aging, living, and loving, *Blue Jay's *simple story is still meaty enough for its two leads to dig their performative talons into. *—Ilana Gordon*

Long before Dan Fogelman was tugging on our heartstrings with *This Is Us*, he gave Hollywood a taste of what he could do with *Crazy, Stupid, Love*. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Jacob, a super-smooth chick magnet who passes his vast dating knowledge onto the newly single Cal (Steve Carell), whom he meets at a bar.

Cal is wounded from his separation from his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), following her affair with her coworker (Kevin Bacon). But just as Cal gets the hang of the single life, Jacob suddenly finds himself falling for a girl named Hannah (Emma Stone) who's not so easily impressed. The ensemble cast's star power and captivating chemistry make for some fascinating, interconnected stories that highlight the ups and downs of dating and relationships. *—I.G. *

Securing Tribeca's Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature, Alice Wu's queer revision of *Cyrano de Bergerac *introduces viewers to Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis), a booksmart outcast whose writing skills become a lucrative business with her peers as customers. When she starts drafting love letters for himbo jock Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer, a.k.a. Will Poulter's doppelgänger) to popular girl Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire) — whom Ellie secretly harbors feelings for — the unlikely pair forge a connection far more profound than any high school crush.

Those in search of a recent romantic comedy that feels like it could have been made during the early '90s should look no further than *Jane Austen Wrecked My Life*. This bilingual film follows Agathe Robinson, a French bookseller and aspiring novelist, as she joins a writing retreat in England sponsored by Jane Austen's descendants. While attempting to write her book, Agathe wrestles with her feelings for two different men and tries to process her grief surrounding her parents' accidental death.

A film that feels like a French riff on classics like *Notting Hill* (1999) and *Bridget Jones' Diary *(2001), *Jane Austen Wrecked My Life* is the perfect comfort watch for bibliophiles, Anglophiles, and anyone else who enjoys a good, old-fashioned romantic comedy. *—I.G.*

Emma Corrin as Lady Constance Chatterley and Jack O'Connell as Oliver Mellors in 'Lady Chatterley's Lover'

Emma Corrin as Lady Constance Chatterley and Jack O'Connell as Oliver Mellors in 'Lady Chatterley's Lover'. Netflix

If* Fifty Shades of Grey *and *Bridgerton* welcomed a child, its name would be *Lady Chatterley's Lover*. Enduring decades of bans for its salacious content, D.H. Lawrence's 1928 avant-garde novel gets a fresh adaptation under the heedful eye of Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, who deftly explores the depths of female desire. In this soft-core romance about emotional and bodily fulfillment, an unhappily married aristocrat (Emma Corrin) defies gender roles by acting on her own urges — starting a clandestine affair with the gamekeeper (Jack O'Connell) of her husband's (Matthew Duckett) estate.

While EW's critic observes a lack of dramatic conflict in the film, they highlight that "what's left is just an unabashedly heady romance, rich in pretty costumes — when they're wearing them — and lush, lusty atmosphere." *—J.M.*

Paul Thomas Anderson returns to the San Fernando Valley with *Licorice Pizza*, a coming-of-age romance set in the 1970s. Alana Kane (Alana Haim) is a 25-year-old school photo assistant; Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) is a 15-year-old actor and aspiring entrepreneur. The two have nothing in common, but after meeting during school picture day, they begin to build a friendship. PTA's script is a playful meditation on the life of a Valley kid in the 1970s, a time when it felt like anything was possible even when nothing was happening. EW's critic writes that the film "is a love letter to an era, and more than that a feeling: a tender, funny ramble forged in all the hope and absurdity of adolescence, one wild poly-blend rumpus at a time."* —I.G.*

The Lovebirds (2020)

Issa Rae as Leilani Brooks and Kumail Nanjiani as Jibran in 'The Lovebirds'

Issa Rae as Leilani Brooks and Kumail Nanjiani as Jibran in 'The Lovebirds'.

After four years of dating, Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae) are prepared to call it quits — until the couple finds themselves involved in a murder that requires them to put their break up aside and go on the run. Too concerned about racial profiling to involve the police, Jibran and Leilani must hunt down the identity of the man who was murdered so they can find out who killed him and clear their own names.

Directed by Michael Showalter (*Wet Hot American Summer*), *The Lovebirds* is a romantic evening gone wrong in the style of films like 2010's *Date Night* and 2018's *Game Night*. Boasting a high ratio of jokes per minute and a pair of lead actors who know how to wield their witticisms like machetes, Nanjiani and Rae's on screen bickering and loving needling will have you rooting for their relationship, even as it's falling apart. *—I.G.*

Match Point (2005)

Scarlett Johansson as Nola Rice and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Chris Wilton in 'Match Point'

Scarlett Johansson as Nola Rice and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Chris Wilton in 'Match Point'. Clive Coote

Woody Allen's work usually centers around the neuroticisms of wealthy New Yorkers, but in *Match Point*, he deviates in almost every regard. A psychological romantic thriller, the film is the story of Chris (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a former professional tennis player turned social climber who marries a wealthy woman (Emily Mortimer), only to enter into an affair with an aspiring American actress (Scarlett Johansson).

When Chris' lust threatens to derail his marriage and financial stability, the former tennis star struggles to keep his life from combusting. Those looking for Allen's traditional comedic stylings are sure to be disappointed, but the film is a tight, taut thriller that EW's critic calls a "serious and lusciously entertaining adultery drama driven by a lust that turns into authentic compulsion." *—I.G.*

Where to watch *Match Point*: Netflix

**Director:** Woody Allen

**Cast: **Brian Cox, Matthew Goode, Scarlett Johansson, Emily Mortimer, Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Kara Hayward as Suzy Bishop and Jared Gilman as Sam in 'Moonrise Kingdom'

Kara Hayward as Suzy Bishop and Jared Gilman as Sam in 'Moonrise Kingdom'. Focus Features

Wes Anderson knows whimsy, and in *Moonrise Kingdom*, the director constructs a beautiful elegy to young love. Set on an island off the coast of New England in the 1960s, this coming-of-age dramedy follows two 12-year-old misfits as they become pen pals and agree to run away together.

Visually constructed using Anderson's pastel palette and cast with some of his favorite stock players, the film combines dreamy, youthful fantasy with religious allegory, and ends up with a story that feels both edgy and innocent. Edward Norton is a treat in his role as the scoutmaster in charge of a local summer camp, but it's the performances by the film's child actors — Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, both industry novices — that make *Moonrise Kingdom* one of Anderson's most compelling projects. *—I.G.*

Where to watch *Moonrise Kingdom*: Netflix

**Cast:** Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton

Obvious Child (2014)

Jenny Slate as Donna in 'Obvious Child'

Jenny Slate as Donna in 'Obvious Child'.

Written and directed by Gillian Robespierre, *Obvious Child* stars Jenny Slate as Donna, a stand-up comedian who drunkenly pursues a one-night stand with a man named Max (Jake Lacy) after being dumped by her boyfriend. Several weeks later, Donna realizes she is pregnant, but struggles to tell the people in her life, even as Valentine's Day — the day of her scheduled abortion — draws closer. Yes, Donna's decision is a crucial part of the story — but it's really the engine that propels a romantic comedy. The film, like its protagonist, is bristly and sarcastic on the outside, but warm and vulnerable at its core." *—I.G.*

Our Souls at Night (2017)

Robert Redford as Louis Walters and Jane Fonda as Addie Moore in 'Our Souls at Night'

Robert Redford as Louis Walters and Jane Fonda as Addie Moore in 'Our Souls at Night'. Kerry Brown/Netflix

Some partnerships just keep getting better with age, and the onscreen relationship between Robert Redford and Jane Fonda — now in its fourth iteration — is one of those unions. In the Netflix original movie *Our Souls at Night*, Redford and Fonda play longtime neighbors and widowers Louis and Addie, who find comfort in spending their nights together as platonic friends. Aware that their unorthodox relationship and sleeping arrangement is eliciting side eyes from the town and their adult children, the pair must eventually choose between their growing emotional dependence on each other and the needs of their respective families.

With a cast of only seven actors, the strength of *Our Souls at Night* lies mainly in the steady hands of its two leads, who make falling in love look just as appealing as they did half a century ago in *Barefoot in the Park*. *—I.G.*

Priscilla (2023)

Much has been said in the movies about Elvis Presley's relationship with Priscilla — but it's all been from his point of view. That changed with Sofia Coppola's *Priscilla*, a biopic in which the King is but a side character. Told in Coppola's distinct filmmaking style, which EW's critic describes as portraying "girlhood on the Venus razor's edge," *Priscilla* tells the story of its subject from the time she meets Elvis (age 14) until she leaves him (age 28).

The history of Priscilla and Elvis' relationship is well known — as is the story of their 10-year age gap — but Coppola's film focuses on Priscilla's maturation as a woman. That growth enabled her to walk away from the man who consumed her entire young adulthood, and actress Cailee Spaeny nails the transformation. Shot in all its '60s splendor, *Priscilla *is a treat for the eyes, ears, and heart. *—I.G.*

If you found Glen Powell to be perfect boyfriend material in *Anyone but You* (2023), wait until you see him paired with the dynamic Zoey Deutch in *Set It Up*. When two stress-ridden assistants from adjoining companies, Harper (Deutch) and Charlie (Powell), conspire to set up their Type-A bosses (Taye Diggs, Lucy Liu) in hopes of freeing themselves from the nonstop office grind, it sparks an enemies-to-lovers fling between the two matchmakers that's as satisfying as a sublime slice of pizza. *Set It Up *ranks among Netflix's finest rom-coms, injecting the genre's familiar elements with an extra dose of heart — all fueled by the palpable chemistry between Powell and Deutch. *—J.M.*

Spike Lee's first feature film as a writer and director, *She's Gotta Have It* presents intertwining romances as lead character Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns) decides which of the three men she's dating (Lee, Tommy Redmond Hicks, John Canada Terrell) she wants to have a monogamous relationship with. Luxuriating in Lee's creative sensibility and shot in crisp black and white, Nola's journey towards picking a partner is funny, thought-provoking, and unique in every respect.

In a review of Netflix's 2017 *She's Gotta Have It *adaptation (also directed by Lee), EW's critic describes the original movie, writing, "*She's Gotta Have It *was Spike Lee's first feature film, and few movies feel so joyfully first." A dramedy that questions sexual, relationship, and gender norms of the time, *She's Gotta Have It *is notable for its subject matter, aesthetic, and for launching Lee's storied Hollywood career. *—I.G.*

Sliding Doors (1998)

Gwyneth Paltrow as Helen Quilley and John Hannah as James Hammerton in 'Sliding Doors'

Gwyneth Paltrow as Helen Quilley and John Hannah as James Hammerton in 'Sliding Doors'.

Miramax/Everett

If *The Butterfly Effect *was a romantic comedy, it would be *Sliding Doors*. Gwyneth Paltrow stars as Helen Quilley, a London publicist whose life after being fired unfolds in parallel storylines: One details what happens to Helen after she catches a train home, the other tells the story of what happens after she misses the train.

As Helen's two paths deviate and coincide throughout the film, her love life and career trajectory unfold in separate arcs, an effective narrative illustration of how the small moments in our lives can have the biggest impacts on our future outcomes. Alternatively funny, tragic, and ultimately very, very British, EW's critic writes, "writer-director Peter Howitt demonstrates a lovely feel for the dreamy poetry of what-ifs — a deeply satisfying formula for romances and melodramas, from *It's a Wonderful Life *to *Brief Encounter*." *—I.G. *

Where to watch *Sliding Doors*: Netflix

Someone Great (2019)

LaKeith Stanfield as Nate Davis and Gina Rodriguez as Jenny Young in 'Someone Great'

LaKeith Stanfield as Nate Davis and Gina Rodriguez as Jenny Young in 'Someone Great'. Sarah Shatz/Netflix

Heartbreak just hits different in Netflix's *Someone Great*, a film about Jenny (Gina Rodriguez), a music journalist who goes through a breakup after accepting her dream job in San Francisco and learning her boyfriend (LaKeith Stanfield) doesn't want to come along. Emotionally buttressed by her best friends Erin (DeWanda Wise) and Blair (Brittany Snow), Jenny decides to make the most of her last night in New York City, and along the way encounters an eclectic supporting cast including Rosario Dawson, RuPaul, and Alex Moffat.

In addition to being a solid modern rom-com, *Someone Great* also has great significance in Swiftie lore: Taylor's 2014 song "Clean" off the *1989* album was one of the inspirations for the film's story, and Swift wrote *Lover's* "Death by a Thousand Cuts" after seeing the movie. Deeply relatable for anyone who's been blindsided or suffered a broken heart, *Someone Great *is about endings, beginnings, and finding the joy in both. *—I.G.*

Titanic (1997)

The tragic implosion of the *Titan* submersible in 2023 proves, yet again, that the allure of the *Titanic* cannot be denied. The same can be said for James Cameron's cinematic adaptation of the event, an over three-hour epic that layers a fictional love story on top of a historical catastrophe, tracing the ship's trajectory from world-class vessel to its final resting place at the bottom of the North Atlantic.

Enriched by real-life characters and true accounts, Cameron's *Titanic* made Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet household names, revolutionized modern filmmaking, and created a banger of a Celine Dion ballad. A tale of love and loss, classism and delusion, *Titanic* is more than worthy of the 11 Academy Awards it took home. *—I.G.*

Lana Condor as Lara Jean Song-Covey and Jordan Fisher as John Ambrose in 'To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You'. Bettina Strauss/Netflix

Navigating high school is painful enough without all of your crushes finding out you like them — at the same time. A modern rom-com that EW's critic calls "breezy and charming," *To All the Boys I've Loved Before* follows Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) as her worst fears are realized when the love letters she never meant to send find their way to the boys who inspired them.

Cornered by love, Lara Jean negotiates a sham relationship with her former crush to throw off her current one, but when feelings start catching, Lara Jean must deal with the consequences of both her lies and the truths she's starting to realize. The first in a series of three films, which also include 2020's *To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You* and 2021's *To All the Boys: Always and Forever*, the original still hits the hardest. *—I.G.*

You've Got Mail (1998)

Tom Hanks as Joe Fox and Meg Ryan as Kathleen Kelly in 'You've Got Mail'

Tom Hanks as Joe Fox and Meg Ryan as Kathleen Kelly in 'You've Got Mail'.

Brain Hamill/Warner Bors.

Representing one of cinema's first forays into the world of online dating, *You've Got Mail* reunites Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in their third rom-com coupling. Nora Ephron co-writes and directs this late-'90s gem about an independent children's bookstore owner (Ryan) who begins an online friendship with a man she meets in a chat room (Hanks), not knowing that his family owns the large bookstore chain that is preparing to run her out of business.

A remake of Ernst Lubitsch's 1940 film *The Shop Around the Corner*,* *starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, *You've Got Mail* doesn't have the same Old Hollywood appeal as its predecessor, but it still packs an emotional punch. As EW's critic at the time writes, the film's ending "with those veils of anonymity falling, retains the power to moist a viewer up." *—I.G.*

- Controversial screenwriter Max Landis is writing a treatment for a new *G.I. Joe* movie for Paramount.

- The project marks his first project for a major studio since he was accused of sexual assault by multiple women in the late 2010s.

- Danny McBride is also developing a separate *G.I. Joe* treatment for the studio.

Max Landis is attempting a Hollywood comeback.

The controversial *Bright* screenwriter is penning a treatment for a new *G.I. Joe* movie for Paramount, ** has learned. The project marks his first new work for a major studio since 2019, when eight women accused him of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.

Landis' project isn't the only new *G.I. Joe* movie in development. EW has also learned that Danny McBride is writing a separate treatment for a different project in the franchise, which a source says will not be combined with Landis' treatment (though *THR* reports that multiple sources say that the two projects will eventually be fused).

Representatives for Landis didn't immediately respond to EW's request for comment Friday.

Landis seemingly acknowledged the news on his Instagram Stories on Thursday night by posting a screenshot of Oscar Isaac's character in *Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker* saying, "Somehow…" — a cropped version of a meme of the character saying "Somehow, Palpatine returned," which is frequently used as an online response to a person's inexplicable comeback.

Landis, the son of *Animal House* director John Landis, previously wrote the screenplay for Josh Trank's 2012 found-footage superpower thriller *Chronicle*. He also wrote and directed the comedy *Me Him Her*, and penned the Kristen Stewart-Jesse Eisenberg action comedy *American Ultra*, the James McAvoy-Daniel Radcliffe sci-fi horror movie *Victor Frankenstein*, and the Sam Rockwell-Anna Kendrick action comedy *Mr. Right*, all in 2015.

He wrote the script for David Ayer's 2017 Netflix fantasy crime thriller *Bright*, which starred Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, and created the BBC comedy-mystery series *Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency*, which ran for two seasons in 2016 and 2017 and starred Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION

Landis was first accused accused of sexual assault by actress Anna Akana in 2017. Two years later, the Daily Beast published an article in which eight women accused him of emotional abuse, physical violence, and rape.

Multiple outlets reported that Landis' managers dropped him as soon as they heard about the Daily Beast article. MGM also shelved *Deeper*, a thriller Landis wrote, after the article's publication, IndieWire reported. Landis' most recent Hollywood credit came with the 2020 war horror movie *Shadow in the Cloud*, which was rewritten without Landis' involvement after the Daily Beast article.

Landis didn't publicly respond to the allegations until 2021, when he published an essay on Medium saying that "some of what's been said about me is true" and that "my instability translated into relationships as emotional abuse, infidelity, and wild unpredictable emotional behavior and tantrums that imploded many of my closest relationships."

He added, "I never apologized or denied because some of it is true, and the parts of it that aren't true don't deserve apologies, they just make me feel impotent fury." He also noted that "I've never been the kind of monster the internet occasionally thinks I am."

In the years since the controversy, Landis has maintained an active YouTube channel and helmed several fan films based on DC Comics.

Meanwhile, after decades of successful toy sales, *G.I. Joe* launched as a movie franchise in 2009 with *The Rise of Cobra*, which starred Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ray Park, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film received a sequel, *G.I. Joe: Retaliation*, in 2013, which saw Tatum and Park return as Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Lee Byung-hun, and Adrianne Palicki joined the franchise.

*G.I. Joe* returned with a prequel-slash-reboot, *Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins*, in 2021. The film starred Henry Golding and only made $40 million at the worldwide box office, on a reported budget of $88 million.

The *G.I. Joe* franchise also quietly returned to the big screen in 2023's *Transformers: Rise of the Beasts*, as the film's protagonist, Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos), was handed a business card bearing the *G.I. Joe* logo in the film's final scene. Paramount then announced that it was officially developing a *G.I. Joe* and*Transformers* crossover movie at CinemaCon in 2024, though *Rise of the Beasts* director Steven Caple Jr. told EW about his ideas to merge the two franchises the previous year.

"There's a big mission at hand… I think it's really cool that there are other planets out there with Transformers," the filmmaker said. "I just feel like we've been on Earth for a very long time. So there might be something interesting to explore there, maybe taking this war and battle somewhere else."

One of the many great aspects of comedy is that not everything will make you laugh the same way — and that's okay. Comedy is a highly subjective art form, and it can take many shapes, from charming confections like *Moonstruck* (1987) to dark satires like *Heathers* (1989).

Amazon Prime Video has numerous comedy offerings free to watch with a subscription, including the aforementioned classics and newer genre-bending comedies like *Red, White & Royal Blue* (2023), *Totally Killer* (2023), and *My Old Ass* (2024). Whatever form of comedy you're in the mood for, Amazon likely has something for you.

Here are our picks for the 15 best comedies on Amazon Prime Video, as of March 2026.

Afternoon Delight (2013)

Kathryn Hahn is one of our finest actresses who specializes in stories of modern-day women going through deep internal struggles, and this quirky indie dramedy is no exception. Hahn plays Rachel, a stay-at-home mom growing increasingly frustrated by the monotony of her life. In an effort to spice things up, she goes with her husband to a strip club where she meets McKenna (Juno Temple), a dancer to whom she's drawn. She soon befriends McKenna, though Rachel's insecurities soon come out, leading to tension in their relationship. —*Kevin Jacobsen*

This engrossing black comedy, based on a wild true story, contains one of Jack Black's best performances. The actor stars as Bernie Tiede, a mortician's assistant who is treasured by his community thanks to his caring nature toward elderly widows. After befriending the irritable Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine), she persuades him to work for her full-time, where her demanding nature leads to Bernie eventually shooting her. —*K.J.*

If you like your comedy with a side of tragedy, *The Big Sick* has got you covered. This is truly a unique, one-of-a-kind production: stomach-achingly hilarious, mega-touching, and…all true? Yep, written by the couple who went through it IRL (Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon) and acted by one (Nanjiani, with Gordon played by Zoe Kazan), the pair deftly turned her shocking diagnosis/near-death experience into true laughs. The best medicine? We think so. *—Debby Wolfinsohn*

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)

Sascha Baron Cohen as Borat Sagdiyev in 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm'

Sascha Baron Cohen as Borat Sagdiyev in 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm'.

Exposing the worst of America in a fearless, laugh-while-you-cringe style is Sacha Baron Cohen's specialty. Disguising himself as a mustachioed, overly-confident Kazakh allowed Cohen a kind of magic access: the ability to travel into the dark corners of the U.S. as an "innocent." This ruse encouraged others to open up in ways they might not have otherwise, creating jaw-dropping moments of comedy (veering into tragedy) you can't look away from.

The setup is simple — Cohen's character Borat returns to the West with his daughter, Tutar (the excellent Maria Bakalova), to win the favor of its leader, "a magnificent new Premier named McDonald Trump." In a kind of bizarro buddy comedy, the two visit synagogues, debutante balls, and freedom rallies, creating moments so indelible they will go down in cinematic history. It's hard to choose just one, so we'll pick two: Rudy Giuliani, and the horrifying father-daughter OB-GYN visit. As EW's critic writes, "his outrageous, uncountable isms — the confident screeds against women and Jew[ish people], the casual endorsements of incest or indentured servitude — are of course satirical, and entirely the point." *—D.W.*

Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019)

Jillian Bell as Brittany Forgler in 'Brittany Runs a Marathon'

Jillian Bell as Brittany Forgler in 'Brittany Runs a Marathon'.

Jillian Bell stars as Brittany, a New York party girl who decides to change her life the old-fashioned way: jogging! EW's critic says Bell brings a "real, messy humanity to Brittany that comedies hardly ever allow a lead character — let alone a non-impossibly-bodied female — to have." Kept afloat by her running buddies — Michaela Watkins' divorcée with issues and Micah Stock's sardonic gay dad — the movie avoids a simple happy ending but *does* provide a satisfying, uplifting one. It's perfect for watching on the treadmill or stationary bike (or lying in bed eating ice cream). *—D.W.*

Fargo (1995)

Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson in 'Fargo'

This raucous crime comedy is one of the definitive Coen brothers movies, don'tcha know? A series of unfortunate events begins with a hapless car salesman, Jerry (William H. Macy), who concocts a scheme to have his wife kidnapped to extort ransom money from his wealthy father-in-law. Jerry hires a pair of criminals, and, three dead bodies later, pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) enters the picture and doggedly investigates the source of the crime.*****Fargo* is a Midwestern masterpiece full of folksy witticisms and delirious violence, winning two Oscars for the Coens' screenplay and for McDormand's performance. "The joy of *Fargo* — the reason the movie has won such enthusiastic critical praise," writes EW's critic, "is that everything that goes wrong does so in a perfectly realized universe of icebound Minnesotan understatement." —*K.J.*

EW's writer called Jamie Lee Curtis' turn as charming scam artist Wanda "unforgettable, fun, sexy, and sneaky." And her partner in crime, a weapons expert played by Kevin Kline, ain't so bad himself. In this ultra-witty, Americans vs. Brits saga of dastardly deeds, greed, and diamond-y double-crossing, Curtis and Kline spar brilliantly with comedy legends Michael Palin and John Cleese (who also wrote the script). Fast-paced and furiously funny, *A Fish Called Wanda* is a tightly wound giggle-fest that earned Curtis her first Golden Globe nomination and Kline an Oscar win. *—D.W.*

Heathers (1989)

Christian Slater as Jason 'J.D.' Dean and Winona Ryder as Veronica Sawyer in 'Heathers'

Veronica (Winona Ryder) is a teen who gets involved with the popular mean-girl clique at her high school, known as the Heathers. She also befriends the mysterious new student, J.D. (Christian Slater), a loner whose idea of revenge involves murder staged as a suicide and orchestrating a disturbing plan to get back at the Heathers for their cruelty. On paper, a plot description for this seminal cult classic sounds far from funny. But the film's heightened tone and memorable one-liners ("Dear diary, my teen angst bulls--- has a body count") make for a darkly entertaining answer to the formulaic '80s teen comedies that came before it, while still holding up today. —*K.J.*

Amazon Prime has quite a few Monty Python projects to choose from, but *Holy Grail* is, well, the holy grail of the comedy troupe's artistic output. This send-up of Arthurian legend finds King Arthur (Graham Chapman) traversing England in the hope of recruiting knights to his Round Table. After assembling his men, God commands him to find the Holy Grail, leading to a perilous adventure with plenty a memorable sequence (shout out to those pesky knights who say "Ni.") —*K.J.*

Nearly 40 years later, the idea of Cher and Nicolas Cage starring in a rom-com together may seem wild, but anyone who's actually seen *Moonstruck* will recognize what an oddly perfect pairing they are. Cher stars as Loretta, a widow who develops an unexpected romantic relationship with her new fiancé's brother, Ronny (Cage). Surrounding them is a cast of clutch supporting players, from Vincent Gardenia and Olympia Dukakis as Loretta's hilariously stubborn parents to Danny Aiello as her unlucky fiancé. —*K.J.*

A teenage girl (Maisy Stella) goes on a mushroom trip and sees a vision of her older self (Aubrey Plaza), who tells her all about her future. The premise (and title) of *My Old Ass* may make it seem like a disposable broad comedy, but writer-director Megan Park imbues her film with surprising depth. This is a coming-of-age story, one with valuable lessons to impart about our relationship to ourselves and the value of living in the present. "The pitch-perfect script and impressive acting made for a hilarious, charming, and surprisingly devastating cautionary tale about life, love, and loss," writes EW's critic. *—K.J.*

Question: How are wedding comedies like wedding cakes? Answer: The dysfunction's baked right in! Based on the 2016 Grant Ginder novel and directed by Claire Scanlon (of Netflix's *Set It Up*), the film follows relatably flawed, baggage-laden siblings Ben Platt and Kristen Bell to England, where they must join their mother (the always stellar Allison Janney) at the wedding of their wealthy half-sister (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). The comedic antics flow like champagne in this bride-com with an edge. *—D.W.*

Andy Samberg as Conner Friel (center) in 'Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping'. Universal Pictures

This laugh-out-loud mockumentary from the Lonely Island satirizes the egos of pop stars and the ridiculousness of the music industry. Andy Samberg stars as Conner Friel, a.k.a. Conner4Real, a narcissistic pop rapper who was originally part of a group known as the Style Boyz with his childhood friends but has since pursued a solo career. After a disastrous second album, Conner considers reuniting with his former groupmates, despite his wounded pride. Come for the film's incisive commentary on pop music, stay for the surprisingly touching representation of childhood friendship. —*K.J.*

Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry and Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz in 'Red, White & Royal Blue'

Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry and Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz in 'Red, White & Royal Blue'. Jonathan Prime/Prime Video

Based on Casey McQuiston's best-selling novel of the same name, *Red, White & Royal Blue* is a charming romantic comedy that charts the unlikely romance between a British prince and the son of the president of the United States. In a classic tale of enemies-to-lovers, American Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez) has a feud with Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), which escalates to a rather unfortunate cake accident (pictured above). Following the subsequent tabloid scandal, the pair eventually make amends and come to realize their feelings for each other, which blossoms into an affair.

It's a frothy good time with two star-making performances at its center; it also happens to feature Uma Thurman in what may be her campiest performance since 1997's *Batman & Robin*. (Some good news: We're getting a sequel!) —*K.J.*

*Totally Killer* boasts four major cinematic selling points guaranteed to make a horror fan happy: a 1980s setting, serial killers, a Halloween night theme, and time travel. Not to say *Totally Killer *doesn't take a fresh approach, because it totally does.* *Here, we meet teenage girl Jamie (Kiernan Shipka), who goes back to 1987 to save her mom's friends from being murdered (as you do). Smartly referencing the Best Movies of All Time (*Back to the Future*, *Scream*, etc.), *Totally Killer* joins a long line of genre flicks led by kick-ass heroines. *—D.W.*
