Jackie Sandler and Adam Sandler attend the 35th Gotham Film Awards at Cipriani Wall Street on Dec. 1, 2025, in New York City.

NEW YORK — One trophy after another.

"One Battle After Another" kicked off what is sure to be a fruitful awards season for Paul Thomas Anderson's shaggy, pulse-pounding masterpiece, picking up best feature at the 35th annual Gotham Awards on Monday, Dec. 1.

Taking the podium at Cipriani Wall Street, Anderson sweetly wished a happy anniversary to his wife, "Saturday Night Live" vet Maya Rudolph: "I met a woman who made me a better filmmaker. Thank you, Maya."

It was the highest profile win of the three-hour event, which saw starry Oscar hopefuls "Hamnet" and "Bugonia" walk home empty-handed while acclaimed international films "My Father's Shadow" and "Souleymane's Story" claimed major hardware.

Julia Roberts, left, and Luca Guadagnino accept the Gotham Awards' visionary tribute.

In between courses of steak with asparagus and chocolate layer cake, myriad A-listers took the stage for last-ditch awards campaigning before the Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations are announced this next week.

Julia Roberts, accepting a visionary tribute honor with "After the Hunt" director Luca Guadagnino, jokingly cut her speech short for a bathroom break. ("I didn't realize how long this was gonna go on, and I didn't regulate my water intake," she quipped.)

Adam Sandler, meanwhile, went on an uproarious, expletive-filled tangent as he presented "Jay Kelly" filmmaker Noah Baumbach with a special director tribute, at one point calling out his former agent. ("He moved back to Omaha and sells weed … he's f----ing useless," Sandler deadpanned.)

Here's what else you missed from this year's ceremony:

Hugh Jackman makes Ryan Reynolds 'jealous' with Kate Hudson

"Song Sung Blue" stars Hugh Jackman, left, and Kate Hudson delivering heartfelt speeches at the Gotham Awards.

Taking the stage for the Gothams' first-ever musical tribute award, Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson sang a few bars of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" ‒ a playful nod to their new movie "Song Sung Blue," about a real-life Diamond tribute band.

"This is so cool," Jackman said, before acknowledging his mock rivalry with his "Deadpool & Wolverine" costar: "This will make Ryan Reynolds insanely jealous."

The eager-to-please showman, who was supported by girlfriend Sutton Foster in the audience, went on to make a bold prediction about Hudson, who is back in the awards hunt a quarter century after "Almost Famous."

"Kate Hudson is not only one of the great stars of our business, she is a consummate actor," Jackman said. "I believe this time she is going to get an Oscar."

Guillermo del Toro denounces AI, Oscar Isaac champions immigrants

Jacob Elordi, left, Guillermo del Toro and Oscar Isaac speak onstage during the Gotham Awards at Cipriani Wall Street on Dec. 1 in New York.

A vocal proponent against AI in Hollywood, Guillermo del Toro didn't mince words as he accepted the vanguard tribute for "Frankenstein" alongside the monster movie's stars Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi.

"Every single frame of this film was willfully made by humans, for humans," del Toro said, as he thanked the entire cast and crew. "The designers, builders, makeup, wardrobe team, cinematographers, composers, editors ‒ this tribute belongs to all of them. I would like to extend our gratitude and say: F--- AI."

Isaac similarly made a plea for the Netflix film's timeliness, noting how he is Guatemalan, Elordi is Australian and del Toro is Mexican.

"Immigrants, we get the job done!" Isaac proclaimed, invoking one of the more famous lines from Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton."

'It Was Just an Accident' director Jafar Panahi triumphs after prison sentence

Iranian filmmaker and activist Jafar Panahi poses with his three Gotham trophies.

The Gothams' biggest winner was "It Was Just an Accident," which scooped up three prizes for best original screenplay, best international feature and best director (Jafar Panahi). The awards sweep came just hours after Panafi's lawyer announced that the courageous filmmaker has been sentenced in absentia to a one-year prison sentence in his native Iran, after he was convicted of "propaganda against the system."

"It Was Just an Accident," which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, is a darkly comedic thriller following a group of Iranian political prisoners as they mull revenge on a man who may or may not have been their tormentor.

On stage, Panahi dedicated his trophies to independent artists in Iran and around the world, honoring "filmmakers who keep the camera rolling in silence, without support, and at times, by risking everything they have, only with their faith in truth and humanity."

He continued: "I hope that this dedication will be considered a small tribute to all filmmakers who have been deprived of the right to see and to be seen, but continue to create and to exist."

- Lilly Wachowski, who co-directed *The Matrix*, is criticizing right-wing misinterpretations of the hit sci-fi film.

- "Right-wing ideology appropriates absolutely everything," Wachowski said on a recent podcast. "They appropriate left-wing points of view, and they mutate them for their own propaganda, to obfuscate what the real message is."

- She and her sister, Lana Wachowski, have taken issue with some conservatives twisting the meaning of the film's famous "red pill" scene, which they conceived as a trans allegory.

Lilly Wachowski has had it with misreadings and misinterpretations of *The Matrix*.

The sci-fi classic she co-directed with her sister, Lana Wachowski, in 1999 tells the story of a lonely computer programmer named Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), who suddenly wakes up to the fact that his drab reality is in fact an advanced computer simulation keeping humanity repressed. The movie's prescient exploration of the choice between a familiar yet crippling illusion and a scary yet liberating truth has proven to be an enduring cultural touchpoint.

But lately, Lilly isn't happy with what some viewers are doing with *The Matrix*'s message.

"Right-wing ideology appropriates absolutely everything. They appropriate left-wing points of view, and they mutate them for their own propaganda, to obfuscate what the real message is," Lilly said on a recent episode of the *So True *podcast. "This is what fascism does."**

The red pill and blue pill scene in 'The Matrix'

The red pill and blue pill scene in 'The Matrix'.

She continued, "They do it with absolutely everything. They do it with 'Make America Healthy Again," referencing Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s controversial public health initiative, which claims a mission of "pursuing truth, embracing science, and enacting pro-growth policies" but has targeted services like transgender medical care and vaccine programs.

"This idea of… there is only two biological genders," Wachowski said. "They're calling it science, but it is not science. And that is what fascism does. It takes these things, these ideas that are generally acknowledged as questions or investigations, or truisms about humanity and life, and they turn them to something else… They remove the weight of what those things represent."**

Will Smith will not star in 'The Matrix 5' despite cryptic teaser

'Matrix' star Joe Pantoliano says the Wachowskis 'f---ing lied' to him about Cypher's fate

Lilly Wachowski came out as trans in 2016, giving "thanks to my fabulous sister," who had "done it before, but also because they're fantastic people." Indeed, Lana Wachowski came out as trans in 2008, reflecting later on her trepidation about going public with her identity, "When I say it's a matter of life and death, I'm saying that some people who have problems with transgender people suddenly recognize [us] as transgender, and that can have dire consequences when you live in a culture that's so uncomfortable with gender variation."

The *Matrix* scene that has gained the most traction in right-wing circles is the one in which Reeves' protagonist is given a choice between taking a blue pill, which will return him to the ignorance of his normal life, and a red pill, which will forever wake him up to the harsh realities of living within the totalitarian control of a surveillance apparatus.

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.***

"Red-pilling" has been interpreted by many conservatives as waking up to the "truth" of prohibitive views on cultural issues like LGBTQ rights. But in fact, both Wachowskis have revealed in the years since the film's release that its deeper meaning, encapsulated in the pill scene, is a trans allegory.

"That was the original intention, but the corporate world wasn't ready for it," Lilly explained in 2020, noting that the very concept of the Matrix "was all about this desire for transformation, but it was all coming from a closeted point of view."****

Move over, Wordle, Connections, and Mini Crossword—there's a new NYT word game in town! The New York Times's recent game, "Strands," is becoming more and more popular as another daily activity fans can find on the NYT website and app.

With daily themes and "spangrams" to discover, this is the latest addicting game to cross off your to-do list before a new one pops up 24 hours later.

We'll cover exactly how to play Strands, hints for today's Spangram, and all of the answers for Strands #639 on Tuesday, December 2.

How To Play Strands

The New York Times

According to the New York Times, here's exactly how to play Strands:

Find theme words to fill the board.

Theme words stay highlighted in blue when found.

Drag or tap letters to create words. If tapping, double-tap the last letter to submit.

Theme words fill the board entirely. No theme words overlap.

Find the "spangram."

The spangram describes the puzzle's theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. It may be two words.

The spangram highlights in yellow when found.

An example spangram with corresponding theme words: PEAR, FRUIT, BANANA, APPLE, etc.

Need a hint?

Find non-theme words to get hints.

For every three non-theme words you find, you earn a hint.
