Daredevil: Born Again is back for season 2 with amplified action, a brand new darker suit and both increased villainy and heroism.

After season 1 ended with Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) overtaking New York and revealing his lawless area of the Red Hook port, Daredevil (Charlie Cox) began assembling an army to take him down step-by-step. Season 2 begins six months later with Daredevil showing the extent of the steps he'll go to by taking down Kingpin's ship called the Northern Star, carrying over 30 tons of military weapons.

Underlying the episode's first moments of action, is the background that Daredevil and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) are hiding out as fugitives — and exploring their romantic relationship — while also working to take down Kingpin.

Daredevil meets with his firm's private investigator Cherry (Clark Johnson) to figure out who the escaped Captain and First Mate of the Northern Star are, but this leads to a deadly attack from Kingpin's task force. Cherry nearly dies, which throws Daredevil off his game through some unresolved trauma surrounding Foggy's (Elden Henson) death, but an unlikely ally eventually saves them.

Elsewhere in the series, Dr. Heather Glenn's (Margarita Levieva) trauma induces her descent into darkness alongside Kingpin. It's not all doom and gloom though as Daredevil secures a new ally for his army and Karen overcomes her demons with a new friend of her own who has powerful connections.

Here's everything to know about the ending of Daredevil: Born Again's season 2 premiere.

What is the Northern Star and how does it lead to Daredevil building his resistance?

Daredevil: Born Again's second season begins with a massive action set piece as the hero violently beats up Kingpin's minions on a gigantic cargo ship called the Northern Star. As he discovers that Kingpin is importing a mass amount of illegal weapons on the ship, Captain Achilleo Kyriaco and First Mate Christofi Savva press a button to sink it.

Daredevil gets off the ship, but because of its size, it doesn't fully sink. As he planned, the superhero has created a reason for people to be suspicious of Kingpin while also stopping his weapons transfer. To clean up loose ends, Kingpin gets his taskforce to try and find Achilleo and Christofi, who literally jumped ship.

They find Achilleo at a Greek restaurant owned by Ariana, who is using it as a harbor for victims of Kingpin's taskforce so they can get out of town. But, Kingpin's taskforce captures Achilleo and later kills him.

Daredevil eventually discovers what Ariana is doing and recruits her as an ally for his resistance, asking her to help save Christofi.

What is the status of Daredevil and Karen's relationship, personally and professionally?

Karen and Daredevil (whose real name is Matt Murdock) have been on and off romantically since the original series began. However, as Daredevil: Born Again's second season kicks off, it seems as though they are finally in a stable place, at least in their relationship.

"Karen and Matt have been playing will they, won't they for 10 years," Cox said on the Daredevil: Born Again podcast. "Karen Page is to Matt Murdock what MJ is to Peter Parker. It'd be very tough to make an argument that there's any other romantic character that is more important to Matt Murdock than Karen Page."

The couple are very physical, both in their romance and in training as they practice fighting on dummies and each other for their resistance against Kingpin. While Daredevil recruits Cherry, Karen is off talking to reporter BB Urich (Genneya Walton), who's getting secret information on Kingpin from his Deputy Mayor Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini).

Karen cleanses some of her guilt from the original 2015 Daredevil show while making a strong ally on the inside in BB as Karen tells her of her relationship with BB's uncle Ben. He was Karen's editor when they tried to get stories out about Kingpin, but the villain killed Ben, which she felt guilty about.

Karen's admission brings her and BB closer. Despite Daredevil and Karen's hardships, they also ultimately find solace in each other.

"They're just trying to make small progress towards what seems like a completely overwhelming, insurmountable task," Cox continued. "But when they get back to that apartment, despite how awful the circumstances are, their life together is very simple and kind of wonderful."

Who is Mr. Charles?

After Kingpin's Northern Star ship sinks, it blocks the port and he is reprimanded by associates of New York's governor with the threat of oversight. However, Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard) walks in as a fix-it person to keep Kingpin from being exposed, bypassing security and telling the governor's associates to walk away.

All threats of oversight are immediately dismissed as Mr. Charles later reveals he's been deployed from Washington and that the people he works for are grateful for the use of Kingpin's port for profit. He's the first character in the series to be somewhat disrespectful to Kingpin and get away with it as he makes it clear that what Kingpin is doing is expanding beyond New York.

"[Mr. Charles] is somebody who bends the ear of very powerful people around the world. So he's not really interested in [New York] politics. He's interested in world politics," Lillard told Entertainment Weekly. "So when he is dealing and trifling with someone like Kingpin, he's not that impressed. That's all I can say, you know? There's this Cheshire Cat sort of energy about him."

What is Dr. Glenn's new role?

After Dr. Glenn survived season 1's attack from her patient-turned-serial-killer Muse, she deals with her trauma by seeking protection via Kingpin. He appoints her as the Commissioner of Mental Health for his administration, but while interrogating the vigilante known as Swordsman (Tony Dalton), it's clear her trauma is unresolved.

She's asking him questions in a corrupt mental health evaluation, noting that he must answer as he's in Kingpin's Red Hook Port, where the villain can hold him as long as he wants. She has a distinct darkness and arrogance, which is different from her more kind, compassionate demeanor in season 1 as she begins to see visions of Muse and amps up her interrogation.

Later, she receives a call from a lawyer controlled by Kingpin known as "The Hawk" who tells her that the evaluation needs to be more incriminating. She struggles morally before once again seeing images of Muse harming her and even visualizing him in front of her as she changes the Swordsman's answers — specifically lying to claim that he sees evil spirits.

Who saves Daredevil?

As the episode ends, Kingpin's taskforce shows up to Cherry's apartment to interrogate him, knowing he's been looking into who the First Mate and Captain were on the Northern Star. Cherry secretly texts Daredevil, who arrives to save him.

Daredevil starts tactically eliminating Kingpin's corrupt cops with his signature red, multi-pronged billy club. Due to his heightened senses, though, he realizes that Cherry is having a heart attack and has flashbacks to when Foggy died, which distracts him.

Kingpin's taskforce overpowers him and not only unmasks Daredevil — figuring out his identity as Murdock — but they also have him on the ground vulnerable to an attack or murder. Suddenly knives start flying through the window with expert precision, taking out each officer individually.

One knife reads "You're Welcome," with a bullseye symbol, revealing that the knife is from Daredevil's arch nemesis Bullseye (Wilson Bethel). In season 1, Daredevil nearly killed Bullseye after the knife-wielding antihero killed Foggy, but Daredevil later learned that he'd been forced into it by Kingpin's wife Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer).

Daredevil also stepped in the way of Bullseye's bullet aimed at Kingpin in season 1's penultimate episode.

Where does Daredevil go from here?

The season's trailer revealed that Daredevil will continue recruiting people for his army to try to take down Kingpin. One character who's been revealed to join his fight is fellow Marvel Defender — and Netflix-era Marvel TV hero — cynical superpowered private investigator Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter).

He could also have another unexpected ally incoming. With Bullseye having now shot both Daredevil and Foggy without wanting to, it seems he is trying to atone for his sins, setting the stage for a potentially shocking alliance.

Now that Kingpin has people invested in using his Red Hook port beyond New York and seems to have Mr. Charles on his side, his power is growing more than ever. However, Daredevil has shown there are cracks in Kingpin's armor by sinking the Northern Star.

When does the next episode premiere?
