Amy Winehouse's father Mitch Winehouse says her household have been left in tears after studies a pro-Palestine sticker was left on her iconic statue in Camden.
Musician Winehouse died in 2011 at the age of 27, with her legacy living on in her more-than 23 million data bought, and a statue erected in her honour on the Camden Market, which numerous individuals visit annually.
The Rehab singer was Jewish, and proudly wore her heritage with a Star of David necklace, something included within the statue – but which was reportedly coated up with a Palestine sticker this week as the Israel-Hamas conflict continues with a major siege on Gaza after the October 7 bloodbath on Israeli civilians.
Police have opened an investigation after photographs circulated online displaying the spiritual symbol coated with a sticker depicting the Palestinian flag.
Mitch, 73, stated he had initially thought to himself: 'It's solely a sticker on prime of the star, and nothing to get too upset about,' when a number of individuals referred to as him to let him know what had occurred.
Nevertheless, he added to Vanessa Feltz on TalkTV that his nine-year-old grandson had referred to as him in floods of tears over how it had affected him.
'I had a number of relations call me, and my grandson referred to as me … and he asked how I used to be feeling. He stated, "Are you okay, pop? Because I've been crying since I heard about this."'
His grandchild was 'very upset … and he was upset for me. So we're upset.'
Mitch stated 'one's spiritual insignia shouldn't be coated up. It shouldn't be hidden away.'
Requested what the Star of David and her Jewish religion meant to Winehouse, her father stated she was 'very pleased with her Jewish heritage … we're proud to be who we're, we're proud to be British Jews.'
Nevertheless he believes the sticker was placed by a fan of Winehouse who 'probably didn't perceive the gravity' of what that they had completed.
He described Winehouse as 'a unifying drive,' and hoped everyone might 'work out a approach how we will all stay collectively … and recognise each other's variations.'
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they are investigating a picture circulating on social media displaying the statue's Star of David coated by a Palestine sticker.
'We're aware of an image being shared on social media which exhibits the statue of Amy Winehouse in Camden Market with a pro-Palestinian sticker placed over the Star of David,' they stated.
'We all know this can have induced upset to many individuals. We are making enquiries with Camden Market to determine the circumstances and what evidence, resembling CCTV footage, may be obtainable.'
In the meantime, a spokesperson from Camden Market stated: 'We have been made conscious on Monday, 19th February that a member of the general public had placed a sticker over the Star of David necklace on the Amy Winehouse statue within the North Yard of Camden Market. This was removed immediately, and the incident was reported to the police.'
The statement continued: 'Camden Market remains at the start, a spot of variety – a worldwide destination that welcomes everybody. Any form of discrimination on our estate won't be tolerated.'
Elsewhere, a spokesperson for the Campaign Towards Antisemitism revealed on X that that they had contacted stewards of Camden Market for additional info relating to the incident.
It was reportedly confirmed to the Campaign Towards Antisemitism by the Market's officials that the sticker can be removed, with later posts confirming the statue was now back to regular.
The statue was erected in 2014 in tribute to the star, who died at her residence in Camden, and was drown up and sculpted by artist Scott Eaton.
