SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. Open summary for Joaquin Niemann looks like this: 71 holes of solid golf, one really bad one, a thrown club, a two-shot penalty and the willpower to not spend too much time wondering about what might have been.

"If my grandmother had tires, she'd be a car," Niemann said Sunday, not wanting to speculate much after wrapping up a tournament sullied by an opening-round 11 on the par-4 sixth hole that featured two tee shots out of bounds and two penalty strokes for hurling his club in frustration.

Niemann shot 4-under 66 in the final round to finish at 1-over 281. It doesn't take heavy math to imagine the possibilities had he not shot 7-over par on one hole.

Maybe more importantly, his 281 put him in a tie for seventh, which means he'll get an invitation to next year's U.S. Open, at Pebble Beach, that goes to everyone in the top 10.

Niemann's 66 paired with a 65 he shot in the second round, shortly after learning his 9 on No. 6 had been bumped up two shots for violating the code of conduct. It meant the only person to shoot a lower round than Niemann over four days at Shinnecock was Wyndham Clark, the winner, who opened the week with a 64. Of course, with that 11, Neimann also recorded the single worst one-hole score over the four rounds.

"A good experience, a good test for myself," Niemann said. "What happened on Thursday and coming back, I was pretty proud of" myself.

Niemann didn't try to deflect blame or suggest he didn't deserve the two-shot penalty for chucking the club after hitting the two errant tee shots, then being rejected when he asked for relief from what he thought might be fire ants.

Play was called for the day shortly after that. Niemann completed his first round Friday morning, then learned about the penalty.

"I was not trying to offend anyone," he said. "I was frustrated. I had my expectations, which are always super high. I was playing good golf. I knew it was going to be a tough week, a long week, a challenging week. ... I'm not happy doing that. I'm not proud about throwing a golf club."

He did not want to delve into the debate about whether the USGA was too aggressive in applying the penalty. Even though the course was virtually empty at the time, he did, in fact, throw the club.

He called his comeback story "something to learn from."

Asked what others might learn from his odyssey around Shinnecock Hills, he said: "Everyone just stop throwing clubs. Just behave."

NASCAR points standings: Cup Series points update after San Diego race

Tyler Reddick lost more of his NASCAR Cup Series points lead after a late-race flat tire in the Anduril 250 on June 21 at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego.

Reddick and Corey Heim, the part-timer who will be full-time in 2027, battled for the win in the final laps, with Heim prevailing before Reddick cut a left-front tire down. Heim earned his first career Cup win at San Diego ahead of his full-time move into a 23XI Racing ride next season.

Denny Hamlin finished 14th and is now eight points behind Reddick, while the 2026 Daytona 500 champion sunk to a 25th-place finish.

Near the Chase bubble, Shane van Gisbergen's DNF erased any buffer he had to the cutline. SVG will get another chance for a good points day next weekend at Sonoma, the last road-course race of the season.

ATLANTA (AP) — When Milwaukee scored eight runs in the second inning of Sunday's game at Atlanta, Robert Gasser's path to his first win since 2024 seemed clear.

When the left-hander had thrown 66 pitches through only three innings, it seemed far less certain Gasser would remain in the game long enough to qualify for the win.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy believed it was time to give Gasser a strong pep talk.

"We challenged him and he took it well, he did a good job," Murphy said after Gasser gave up two runs in six innings in the 9-4 win over the Braves. Gasser's outing was crucial as the Brewers salvaged one win in the three-game series.

Gasser (1-3) earned his first win since May 15, 2024, against Pittsburgh.

"It's awesome," Gasser said. "It's obviously great to have the win next to your name, but just to help the team get a win at the back end of the series is huge."

Gasser allowed four hits and one walk. His seven strikeouts and six innings matched career highs.

Gasser, 27, had not completed six innings in any of his first five starts this season. He was aware his pitch count was too high early in the game.

"There were some really long at-bats in there, especially the first two innings," Gasser said. "And I looked up and saw 50 pitches and I knew we had to figure out how to get some outs quicker."

After giving up a leadoff double to Michael Harris II in the fourth inning, Gasser recorded nine consecutive outs to end his outing.

When asked about the challenge from Murphy, Gasser said the message was "showing up ready to go, don't let the flow of the game dictate how I'm gonna play from pitch one. Be on the attack, be pitching to win the game."

Murphy said Gasser pitched with more confidence after stacking up the high pitch count early in the game.

"It's about belief," Murphy said. "Start to believe. I don't know if it helped, I have no idea ... but he pitched better."

Gasser was 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in five starts in 2024 before Tommy John surgery shortened his season. He returned for two starts in 2025.

Gasser's long-awaited win may be a sign he has made a full recovery and is again ready to perform at the potential that made him a second-round draft pick by San Diego in 2021.

"Yeah, I'm definitely confident," he said. "It's more so just the belief, regardless of who we're playing every single time, and just go out there and believe in my stuff and what I'm able to do."

- The cast of Legally Blonde recently reunited to mark the film's 25th anniversary.

- The event also celebrated the launch of *Elle*, a prequel series about the iconic Reese Witherspoon character's high school years.

- Witherspoon teared up while reflecting on the character's impact, telling the crowd, "Playing this character for 25 years has been the privilege of my life."

The *Legally Blonde* family is coming together to pass the pink baton.

In celebration of the upcoming prequel series *and* the original film's 25th anniversary, the cast of the hit 2001 comedy reunited Saturday for an immersive fan event at Manhattan’s Hall des Lumières on Saturday.

The event saw Reese Witherspoon (Elle Woods herself) step out alongside Jennifer Coolidge (salon owner and trusted confidante Paulette Bonafonté), Selma Blair (Elle's antagonist-turned-bestie Vivian Kensington), Ali Larter (accused murderer Brooke Taylor Windham), Matthew Davis (jerk ex boyfriend Warner Huntington III), and Victor Garber (ruthless Harvard professor Aaron Callahan).

Not only did the stars pose for photos, they also participated in a panel conversation that swung from hilarious to sentimental to downright emotional. At one point, Witherspoon was asked a question about the impact of her iconic fashionista lawyer and practically burst into tears.

"When I walked in and I saw this moment, it just felt like it was galvanizing how I felt about playing this character — I’m gonna cry," Witherspoon told the crowd, tearing up. "Playing this character for 25 years has been the privilege of my life."

She continued, "People come up to me and they tell me stories about how they go to law school because of her or they named their daughter Elle or they overcame some incredible challenge in their life because she did that. She went through this experience of feeling like everybody was looking down on her or judged her, and I don’t know a person on Earth who hasn’t felt like an underdog in some situation."

Witherspoon was sniffling and wiping away tears as she turned to her former costars to say, "Watching this happen is extremely emotional for me, and I’m really just so touched that you’re all here.

Witherspoon initially brought Elle Woods to life in 2001's *Legally Blonde*, which sees the sorority president attempt to win her aspiring politician ex back by following him to Harvard Law School. She reprised the role in 2003's *Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde*, and a third film has long been in development.

At the same time, the Oscar winner is passing the role over to a new generation. Young actress Lexi Minetree will play the future pink-loving lawyer in *Elle*, a prequel series that follows the titular character in 1995 as she navigates the tumultuous waters of high school in her Seattle hometown, navigating tricky friendships, forbidden romance and questionable fashion choices.

The series launches July 1 on Prime Video, and the late James Van Der Beek is set to appear posthumously in *Elle* as a recurring guest-star.

Key Points -

On June 1, the AI start-up Anthropic filed confidentially with the SEC to go public.

Most investors won't be able to own shares before it goes public, but the KraneShares Artificial Intelligence and Technology ETF does.

10 stocks we like better than KraneShares Trust - KraneShares Artificial Intelligence And Technology ETF ›

After the Space Exploration Technology initial public offering (IPO), the next highly anticipated IPO is likely to be from the artificial intelligence (AI) start-up Anthropic. On June 1, Anthropic submitted a confidential S-1 filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission, placing it on the path to go public.

Much like the situation ahead of the SpaceX IPO, however, most investors will not be able to buy into the company directly before it goes public. That said, there's an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that already owns shares of Anthropic that can be invested in today: the KraneShares Artificial Intelligence and Technology ETF (NASDAQ: AGIX).

Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now, when you join Stock Advisor. See the stocks »

A chip that says artificial intelligence.

KraneShares' investment approach and public holdings

KraneShares invests in both public and private tech and AI companies, with 80% of its net assets allocated to stocks in the Solactive Etna Artificial General Intelligence Index. That index focuses on three investable areas of AI: hardware, infrastructure, and applications. This helps create broader investments in AI, going beyond the ETF just purely holding chipmakers or software companies.

For the public companies it owns, some of the leading names in tech make up the top five holdings, including: Nvidia (the No.1 holding), Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Apple. It also holds SK Hynix, an increasingly popular memory and storage company that trades on the Korean Exchange and can be difficult for U.S. investors to access.

Private investments

For its stake in Anthropic, KraneShares invested directly in the AI company during a fundraising round and holds about 17,800 shares. As of June 17, Anthropic accounts for 1.4% of the ETF's holdings.

Besides Anthropic, KraneShares also invested in SpaceX before it went public and now owns over 111,000 shares. It also owns over 367,000 shares in Nuro, an autonomous vehicle and robotics company, and more than 14,000 shares in the prediction market operator Polymarket.

The rewards and risks of the KraneShares ETF

This ETF has performed well thus far in 2026, climbing more than 27% as of June 18. Most of its holdings are publicly traded, but it still offers exposure to pre-IPO companies that the average investor typically can't invest in directly. By focusing on AI companies in the hardware, infrastructure, and applications sectors, it also helps avoid the risk of being overly concentrated in just one segment of AI.

Still, there are risks involved. One is that this ETF could face short-term volatility, having a hot run ahead of the Anthropic IPO that cools off once it's public. Because investors can buy Antrhopic stock directly when it opens to the public, this ETF may look less appealing to some. There's also a significant risk that any sell-off in AI stocks will hit this ETF particularly hard, as its entire focus is on AI.

That said, for long-term investors who seek broad exposure to AI and who appreciate that the KraneShares Artificial Intelligence and Technology ETF holds several private companies, it may be a portfolio fit.
