What's Fact and What's Fiction in FX's Love StoryFX

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."

Spoilers below.

In the years before his marriage, John F. Kennedy Jr. was considered one of the most eligible bachelors of his era—if not the most eligible bachelor. When he wed Carolyn Bessette in 1996, the pair became a source of enormous fascination: There was a sense that, together, they formed a perfect couple. That image was shattered in 1999 when the pair died in a tragic plane crash alongside Carolyn's sister Lauren.

FX's new fictionalized drama series, Love Story, recounts the couple's seven-year relationship, with Paul Anthony Kelly starring as John and Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn. The show traces John's career in magazines and Carolyn's in fashion; their courtship; their marriage; and their eventual deaths. The supporting cast includes Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, and Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein.

But what does Love Story get right? And what does the series leave out? Here's everything you about the real-life events that inspired some of Love Story's key moments.

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette and Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.Eric Liebowitz/FXJohn and Carolyn's First Meeting

In Love Story, we see John and Carolyn meet at a New York City fundraiser, introduced by Carolyn's boss, Calvin Klein. The real story of their first encounter is less clear: Some friends recall them meeting when John came to Calvin Klein for a fitting in 1992, while others remember them meeting at a party. As John was dating actress Daryl Hannah at the time, he and Carolyn didn't begin dating seriously until 1994, following the death of Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.Eric Liebowitz/FXJohn's Bar Exam

John's arc in the first episode of Love Story is fueled by the humiliating headlines written about him after he failed the New York Bar Exam not once but twice. The real-life situation was just as painful, as the New York Post did indeed run a now-legendary story titled "The Hunk Flunks… Again."

Omari K. Chancellor as Gordon Henderson, Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette, and Tonatiuh as Narciso Rodriguez.Eric Liebowitz/FXCarolyn's Job at Calvin Klein

On their first date in Love Story, Carolyn informs John how she got her job at Calvin Klein. As she explains, she worked at a Calvin Klein store in Boston after college graduation, and she so impressed the company higher-ups that they recruited her to interview for a job at the company headquarters. This story is accurate to what The New York Times wrote about Carolyn's real-life career trajectory in 1996.

Part of Carolyn's allure was her ability to work with celebrities. In the first episode, she impresses Calvin Klein when she skillfully styles Annette Bening for an event. It's unclear whether this exact scene really took place, but The New York Times reported that Bening was indeed one of the stars that Carolyn dressed while she worked for Calvin Klein.

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.FXJohn's Magazine George

One of John's biggest achievements was creating and running George. The magazine, which launched in 1995, covered both politics and popular culture in a witty manner that was considered unique for the time. The first issue featured Cindy Crawford dressed as George Washington, a portrait that became an iconic image of the era. In the first episode of Love Story, we see John and his business partner Michael Berman (Michael Nathanson) meet with potential investors at the New York City restaurant Michael's, which was, in fact, a top spot for media executives at the time.

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette.FXThe Kate Moss Headshot

It was indeed a 1993 Calvin Klein perfume campaign that electrified Kate Moss's career. But whether it was actually Carolyn who fished her headshot out of a pile, as happens in the show, is unclear.

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette and Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.FXThe Pool Party

Carolyn and John run into each other at a party for the book Pools, which was written by Kelly Klein, Calvin's wife. It's not known whether the pair actually saw each other at this event, but the setting itself is fictionalized in the show. While the real party that John attended was thrown at the New York Athletic Club, Love Story shot it at the iconic—and aptly named—midtown restaurant The Pool.

Noah Fernley as Michael Bergin.FXCarolyn and Michael Bergin's Relationship

The third episode of Love Story shows Carolyn and model Michael Bergin (Noah Fernley) looking up at a billboard of his Calvin Klein underwear campaign. The real Bergin did actually make a splash with such a billboard, and he did have a relationship with Carolyn, which he explored in his 2004 book The Other Man: A Love Story.

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis.Eric Liebowitz/FXJohn's Park Mugging

As Carolyn and John sit on a park bench in episode 3, he tells her a story about when he was 15 years old and a man mugged him in the park. The anecdote establishes the fact that John's mother encouraged his Secret Service agents to let him roam freely. As the New York Times reported in 1974, John was, in fact, robbed in Central Park when he was 13.

Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis.Eric Liebowitz/FXJackie Kennedy Onassis's Death

The episode "America's Widow" follows the Kennedy family after Jackie Kennedy Onassis is diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and eventually dies in 1994. The episode includes details such as Jackie receiving last rites shortly before her death, which is not something that's been reported on publicly. We do, however, watch John step outside of the building—just as he did in real life—and speak to the crowd of reporters standing outside. "She was surrounded by her friends and her family and her books and the people and the things that she loved, and she did it in her own way," he said.

Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein.Eric Liebowitz/FXCalvin Klein's Paper Clips

In episode 4, "I Love You," we see Carolyn nervously straighten a row of black paper clips prior to Calvin Klein's arrival at the office. This detail is accurate to the real Klein—as Womenswear Daily reported in 2004, the only paper clips the designer allowed in the office were black ones.

Kurt Iswarienko/FXThe Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Auction

Also in "I Love You," John and his sister, Caroline, catalogue their mother's possessions after deciding to sell some of her belongings at auction. The real-life Sotheby's sale of "The Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis" was held over four days in April 1996 and was one of the most famous auctions of all time. Among the pieces sold were President John F. Kennedy's White House rocking chair, which went for $453,500, and the first lady's engagement ring from Aristotle Onassis, which was purchased for $2,587,500. Caroline says the sale is necessary to cover their $34 million in inheritance taxes, which isn't quite accurate. $34 million was, in reality, the total amount brought in by the auction, and it's unlikely the tax bill and the proceeds were both exactly $34 million.

Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy and Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis.Eric Liebowitz/FXJackie's Swimming Ring (and Carolyn's Engagement Ring)

When Caroline and John are going through their mother's things in episode 4, she points out what she calls Jackie's "swimming ring." The idea, Caroline explains, was that she switched to wearing this ring when she went swimming to avoid losing her wedding and engagement rings. At the end of the episode John looks at the ring again and then puts it in his pocket. In episode 5, he proposes to Carolyn with the ring.

The swimming ring was first publicly referenced in What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship and Love by Carole Radziwill, whose late husband, Anthony, was Jackie's nephew. She said that Jackie did indeed have an emerald and diamond band that she called her swimming ring. But unlike in the show, Carolyn's actual engagement ring, Radziwill says, was a recreation of Jackie's ring, not the actual piece.

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.FXThe Letter

While John is playing touch football in the park in episode 4, he finds an anonymous letter left in his gym bag, one that makes nasty accusations about Carolyn's behavior and character. John asks Carolyn about the contents of the letter and she storms out.

This story has some basis in reality. In RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil's book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography, John's friend Brian Steel explains that he did ask around about Carolyn on John's behalf, and reported negative stories back to his friend. As Steel shared, "[John] went out on a date or two with Carolyn, and he's like, 'I want you to find out as much as you can about Carolyn—I know you know people, like, you know, nightclub people, restaurateurs...I know you know people that went to college with her.' And so I found out as much as I could about her and not all of it was good. I told him all of it. She was a club girl, and she dated a lot of people."

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette and Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.FXThe Boat Pictures

After John and Carolyn reconcile during episode 4, we see them enjoy a day out on his boat in the waters around New York City. The trip seems private and intimate, but when Carolyn returns to work, she sees paparazzi pictures on the front page of the New York Post.

In reality, the boating trip that was photographed took place in Martha's Vineyard, not New York, and there doesn't seem to have been a front-page story on Bessette in the Post at that time.

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette.Eric Liebowitz/FXThe Visit to Hyannis Port

In episode 5, "Battery Park," we see Carolyn's first visit to the Kennedy summer home on Cape Cod, The couple spend a weekend there, hosted by John's aunt Ethel, but the occasion becomes deeply stressful for Carolyn. New as she is to the Kenny family gatherings, she's unprepared for family customs—like discussing politics during dinner or signing up for a breakfast shift—but enjoys playing with the younger relatives.

It's true that Carolyn was seen making many trips to Cape Cod during her relationship with John, but there were few credible detailed accounts of acrimony during these visits.

In "Battery Park," we see John plan for a big conference that will announce his new magazine George and unveil the first cover. In the episode, Carolyn and John have been arguing, and she chooses not to attend the event. This reflects reality: Carolyn also avoided the September 1995 event, according to Radziwill.

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette and Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.Eric Liebowitz/FXThe Park Fight

When the real-life John and Carolyn got into an intense argument in Battery Park in February 1996, the paparazzi were there to film it. The fight turned physical, and images were published in the National Enquirer and the New York Daily News, which headlined the story "Sunday in the Park with the George Editor."

Love Story replicates these events in episode 5, "Battery Park." Although there's no way to know exactly what Carolyn and John said to each other during this fight—which happened several months after the launch of George and several months before their wedding—Love Story definitely got the outfits and the setting of the real scene right: Carolyn's sweater and jacket and John's shorts and henley perfectly match what they were wearing in the photos from that day.

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette and Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.FXThe Proposal

In "Battery Park," John proposes to Carolyn while on a boat in Massachusetts. In the show, he says that fishing is better with a partner—and he gives her his mother's swimming ring.

RoseMarie Terenzio, the real JFK Jr.'s former assistant, told People that the actual proposal did, in fact, take place on a boat. "He went into this thing about how everything's better with a partner, not just fishing but life," Terenzio recalled, as Love Story reflects in its fictionalized dialogue between John and Carolyn.

Constance Zimmer as Ann Messina Freeman.FXThe Rehearsal Dinner

In episode 6, "The Wedding," Love Story depicts John and Carolyn hosting their rehearsal dinner and reception on Cumberland Island, a barrier island off the coast of Georgia. This is true to life: The couple did celebrate their nuptials on the tiny island, at the Greyfield Inn, a former Carnegie family home.

The episode also depicts Carolyn's mother, Ann Messina Freeman, going off-book during her toast at the rehearsal dinner. This speech was likely largely fictionalized, but there is some apparent truth within it. As JFK Jr: An Intimate Oral Biography describes, Ann did give a toast during the dinner, and Radziwill—wife to Anthony Radziwill, John's best man—told the biography's authors that "it was sort of a cautionary tale. Something like, 'I hope my daughter has the strength to handle all of this.'"

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette and Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.Eric Leibowitz/FXThe Wedding

As Love Story painstakingly re-creates, John and Carolyn's candlelit wedding ceremony was held at Cumberland Island's First African Baptist Church, where a small number of guests—less than 50—filled the chapel's pews. According to People, John's cousin, Anthony Radziwill, served as his best man, while his sister, Caroline, was Carolyn's maid of honor. Caroline's children, Rose and Tatiana Schlossberg, were flower girls, while her son, Jack Schlossberg, was the couple's ring bearer.

Carolyn wore a now-famous silk-crepe slip dress designed by Narciso Rodriguez, a look she accessorized with silk tulle gloves, Manolo Blahnik shoes, a veil, and a clip that had once belonged to John's mother, Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

According to writer Sunita Kumar Nair, who wrote CBK: A Life in Fashion, Carolyn did arrive late to the church, as Love Story depicts. Her dress had been in need of last-minute alterations.

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.Eric Leibowitz/FXJohn's Speech to the Paparazzi

In episode 7, "Obsession," John and Carolyn return from their honeymoon, and she expresses her nervousness about walking onto the street where a crowd of reporters had gathered. In both the show and real life, John stepped out ahead of her to speak to the press. "This is a big change for anyone, and for a private citizen even more so," he said, according to a Los Angeles Times report. "I ask that you give Carolyn all the privacy and room you can." Just as in the episode, Carolyn stepped out in a camel-colored pencil skirt and black top.

Also in episode 7, Carolyn and John discuss an appearance he made on the popular sitcom Murphy Brown. In reality, that episode aired on September 18, 1995, which was before John and Carolyn's wedding. John plays himself and makes a visit to Murphy's office carrying a copy of George. "John, hi! Oh, I guess the lawyer thing didn't work out," Murphy (Candice Bergen) joked in the episode. "That's a tough break."

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.FXCarolyn's Job Interview

A particularly sad Love Story moment comes in episode 7, when Carolyn excitedly prepares for a job interview with Ralph Lauren. It's a position she's qualified for, and she seems happy about the possibility of a new job. But when she comes down to the building lobby after the interview, a huge crowd of reporters are waiting for her. She realizes that the hysteria that follows her everywhere would make it too difficult for anyone to hire her. There don't appear to be any public reports of Carolyn interviewing at Ralph Lauren in real life, but it wouldn't be surprising: Her close friend Hamilton South worked at the company.

Erich Bergen as Anthony Radziwill.FXAnthony's Cancer

Midway through "Obsession," John and Anthony are together in John's apartment when Anthony tells John that his cancer has spread to his lungs. This is sadly true to life. Anthony Radziwill, a television journalist, was diagnosed with sarcoma ahead of his wedding in 1994, his wife Carole Radziwill wrote in her book What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship and Love. Anthony, who was John's best friend, was sick for five years and died shortly after John, Carolyn, and Lauren Bessette's tragic plane crash.

Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy.FXCarolyn and Caroline's Fight

In episode 7, we see Carolyn feel out of place at a cocktail party thrown for her and John at his sister Caroline's home. She begins to play with the children, and when Caroline's young daughter asks to go downstairs to get candy from the doorman, Carolyn takes her. The paparazzi are standing outside, where they're able to see Carolyn and the girl through the glass. This intrusion prompts a major fight between Caroline, Carolyn, and John.

In real life, a picture was captured by the paparazzi that showed Carolyn holding Jack Schlossberg, Caroline's son, in the building lobby. In JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography, Terenzio describes the scenario playing out similarly to what Love Story depicted.

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Erich Bergen as Anthony Radziwill.FXLee Radziwill's Surprising Gift

During the party at Caroline's house in "Obsession," Anthony and Carolyn joke about his mother Lee Radziwill sending Carolyn drug-store hair clips as a wedding gift. According to People, she was reportedly frustrated that John and Carolyn hadn't invited her to their wedding.

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.FXThe Rumors in the Press

The morning after Carolyn and John attend a party at the Guggenheim museum in episode 7, she sees headlines suggesting that she's pregnant and becomes incredibly upset. The baby rumors that Carolyn endured were real; the press was eager to get the first shot of her pregnant.

Michael Nathanson as Michael J. Berman and Paul Anthony Jelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.FXThe Documentary Fight

In "Obsession," John learns from his business partner that his brother-in-law, Ed Schlossberg, has signed him up to narrate an HBO documentary on his father's assassination—something that John has no intention of doing. We later see this tension boil over between John, Ed, and Caroline.

This anecdote about the documentary seems grounded in truth, though it has not been fully verified. Writer Steven Gillon mentions a fight between the real-life Ed and John over an HBO documentary in his book American's Reluctant Prince, and the documentary is also referenced in JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography.

Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.FXDiana's Death

Carolyn gets a call from her sister Lauren telling her to turn on the TV, as Princess Diana has been killed. Once John and Carolyn realize that paparazzi were involved in the car accident, Carolyn becomes incredibly upset and mentions that she had recently seen Diana at Gianni Versace's funeral. Versace's funeral was held in Milan in July 1997, a month before Diana was killed. Pictures show that, as Carolyn says on the show, she was sitting one row behind Diana.

Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr.FXJohn's Broken Foot

When the episode jumps ahead by one year, John has broken his foot and is using crutches. He talks about how he needs more hours of instrument instruction to supplement his training. John did have a broken foot in the summer of 1998, and it was a factor in the deadly plane crash, along with his lack of instrument training, the New York Times reported.

"Woke And Out Of Touch": White House Reacts To Jamie Lee Curtis' Comments On Diversity

Jamie Lee Curtis accused the Trump administration of trying to "erase" diversity from the United States.

The White House has since responded to the actress, labeling her "woke" and claiming that one cares about her political views.

Jamie, who has a trans daughter, has long been an advocate for diversity and LGBTQ+ rights.

After condemning ICE and Border Patrol agents in the wake of the fatalities of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, the Oscar winner weighed in on the topic of diversity and the inclusion of minorities.

"I'm happy more women are getting appreciation," Jamie said at the South by Southwest festival on Saturday (March 14) while discussing diversity in the film industry.

"More people of color are getting appreciation. More genders are being appreciated. Diversity, inclusivity, the words that Donald Trump is trying to erase from our language, which is an abomination. It's fantastic."

She also thanked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for giving space to films like Sinners and for continuing to grow "like our Constitution should."

The actress said the Constitution "was designed to be amended. It was not designed to be a rigid, binary idea. It was designed to grow and flow as people grew and flowed.

"But we've become binary in our ideas and the interpretation of that binary is what has gotten us into another war. I mean, it's just awful."

The actress previously voiced her support for the protests in Minnesota against ICE

The White House quickly brushed off Jamie's remarks, dismissing her political views as irrelevant to the general public.

Without naming her directly, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told Fox News, "Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch woke celebrities in Hollywood say or think."

The back-and-forth between the actress and the government comes after Jamie spoke out against the Trump administration last month, calling it "inhuman."

Image credits: Jerome Gilles/NurPhoto via Getty Images

During an event for the nonprofit Project Angel Food, she told Variety, "Every day I think I'm not going to be shocked anymore, and then I'm shocked.

"It is inhuman the way this administration is treating its citizens and its constituents and people in need. It's an abhorrence what they're doing."

She also accused Trump of using ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to distract from the Epstein files and his alleged ties to the disgraced financier.

Other celebrities, such as Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, and Kehlani, have also condemned the federal agency.

"We're only going to get sh*t done if we do it together and defy these motherf**kers," Jamie said, referring to the protests that erupted in Minnesota after an ICE agent fatally fired at Renee Good, a 37-year-old American woman.

The Trump administration maintains that the agent, Jonathan Ross, acted in self-defense after the woman tried to run him over with her vehicle on January 7.

Days later, on January 24, federal agents from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) fired at 37‑year‑old Alex Pretti, also in Minneapolis.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the agents fired in self-defense after Pretti, who they say had a weapon, resisted their attempts to disarm him.

Eyewitnesses and local officials have challenged that account, pointing out he had a phone in his hand, not a weapon.

"THESE WERE AMERICANS! SH*T BY OUR GOVERNMENT," Jamie wrote on social media. "Let the ICE STORM of RESISTANCE RING LOUDLY."

Jamie defended her transgender daughter, Ruby, amid what she called "very dangerous times" for the trans community

Image credits: Maya Dehlin Spach/Getty Images

The 67-year-old Halloween actress previously slammed conservatives who spread homophobic views in the "name of religion."

She made the comments in 2023 while speaking at the Out100 Celebration, an event honoring members of the LGBTQ+ community and advocates hosted by Out magazine. That year, she received the "Advocate of The Year" award.

"These are very dangerous times and I'm very happy to be in a room with people who are fighting the best fight they can fight," she said during her speech.

Image credits: Michael Siluk/UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

Referring to her daughter, who came out as a trans woman in 2021, she added, "Especially for people who have felt hidden their entire lives, and who have had the remarkable courage to state their truths like my beautiful daughter, Ruby."

Jamie shares 29-year-old Ruby with her husband, comedy director Christopher Guest. The longtime couple also has a 39-year-old daughter named Annie.

"This is what you do when you're a parent: You suit up and you show up with your heart open and your arms outstretched and your aim, true. Your job is to tell the haters to back the f**k off.

"I pray that the homophobia and transphobia that is being championed in the name of religion by the right is exposed and silenced as wrong by the love of humanity that is the center of our gay and out trans community."

Dinner and a movie... they just go together naturally. But as one gains maturity, there comes the realization that there are better restaurants than McDonald's and better films than Minions. (For many of us, this comes around age 40.)

Luckily, access to quality movies abound in the age of streaming. We here at Entertainment Weekly would like to light the stove of that inspiration with a collection of films that focus on great culinary achievement. As such, here are 10 chef movies to get you fired up in the kitchen.

Babette's Feast (1987)

Winner of the Academy Award for what was then called Best Foreign Language Film, this Danish movie, based on an Isak Dinesen story, is set in a 19th century village populated by uptight religious people. A French refugee has spent years making unfussy meals for a pair of sisters. After winning a lottery, she begs the town to let her throw a luxurious feast.

Despite worries that such opulence is sinful, the sisters allow it. What follows is a seven-course act of generosity and openness that transforms the town. Vegans will not love the part involving foie gras, but hopefully they'll see the wider picture.

Big Night (1996)

Stanley Tucci's onscreen love affair with Italian cooking started here in this marvelous low-budget passion project that he co-wrote and co-directed. He stars as a 1950s restaurant manager working with his older brother (Tony Shalhoub), a brilliant and uncompromising chef betting it all on an elegant Italian ristorante. He meets requests for simple plates of spaghetti with scorn.

Their only chance for survival is word-of-mouth from a celebrity, and soon there are rumors that Louis Prima will be in the area. They prepare an enormous, free evening of gorgeous food… and then the unexpected happens. Big Night was a sensation, and introduced most audiences to the timpano, an elaborate baked pasta dish that needs to be seen to be believed.

Boiling Point (2021)

This 90-minute thriller was all shot in one take, which is as difficult as searing a tuna from just one match. The film stars Stephen Graham as a head chef on an overbooked night, dealing with the typical headaches of running a high end restaurant and an unexpected visit from a health inspector. (Both the stakes and the steaks are raised, har har har.)

The funniest parts involve a table of obnoxious influencers who have picked the wrong night to be a nuisance. Not so funny is a diner's very dangerous allergic reaction.

Chef (2014)

Starring and directed by Jon Favreau, this is a great, life-affirming story about a talented chef abandoning the world of snobby restaurants to open a food truck. After a very funny social media meltdown, and subsequent firing by his boss (Dustin Hoffman), Carl (Favreau) discovers a love of Cuban cooking and embraces a more populist style.

This all leads to a showdown with the food critic who initiated his "downfall." Do not watch this while hungry, as you will require a Cubano sandwich immediately.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)

Though I, the author of this list, don't really understand enthusiasm for sushi (it's an adequate delivery system for protein, but not a food I crave), I recognize that for many it's a way of life. It certainly is for Jiro Ono, a sushi chef whose restaurant is considered the finest in the world, even though it's tucked away in a subway station.

While watching this delightful and beautiful film, one is easily convinced that even simple items like a bowl of steamed rice can become fine art in the right hands. There's a level of craft and dedication here normally found at, say, NASA, not restaurants. It's one of the most extraordinary looks at a place of business ever recorded.

Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros (2023)

The four-hour French documentary Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros is an expansive, rich repast of a film that luxuriates in conversational ease and exploration. It examines of one of France's most beloved restaurants soaks up every contour of the enterprise, from picking out wines and cheeses, to handling reservations, to crafting each night's menu.

There's no plot other than "this is how it's done," but it concludes with a celebration of all that makes life worth living. This was the final, perfect film for director Frederick Wiseman, who was already past 90.

Nonnas (2025)

Nobody ever cooked as well as your grandmother, even if all she did was pour you a bowl of Rice Krispies. This heartwarming, somewhat-based-on-a-true-story tale centers on Vince Vaughn risking his life savings to open a restaurant that recaptures the special bond between old Italian women and food.

Featuring Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Susan Sarandon, and Brenda Vaccaro flinging tomatoes at each other in the kitchen before learning to work together, Nonnas is a very agreeable, very New York movie that will leave you craving a nice Sunday gravy.

Pig (2021)

Certainly the weirdest movie on this list, the Nicolas Cage-led Pig plays like a violent revenge thriller… until it doesn't. It's about a (former) high-end chef, now a hermit, whose prized truffle pig is stolen. He descends from the mountains looking for his lil oinking buddy, suddenly a man possessed by one single purpose.

The unexpected tonal shift between his reclusive serenity and haute cuisine is just one of the satisfying twists in Michael Sarnoski's low-budget gem. The movie also works as a declaration of higher values like authenticity and honesty — something you may not expect at first when watching Nic Cage screaming about a pig.

Ratatouille (2007)

Ayyy, good ol' Remy the Rat! When was the last time you saw this? Maybe it's been a while. He hides under the chef's hat and pulls on the guy's hair and "drives him" in the kitchen. Cute! Then there's the scene with the mean critic who is thunderstruck with a Proustian rush of flavors. Very meaningful. The opening song, "Le Festin," is very good, too.

But rats don't belong in a kitchen. Yes yes, we know this is a kiddie movie, but we need to firmly establish the difference between art and reality. This is just pretend!

Tampopo (1985)

Ken Watanabe and Ryutaro Otomo in 'Tampopo'Credit: Everett Collection

One of the all-time great zany films, Tampopo is about a widow struggling to run a ramen shop, who teams up with a truck driver to help turn the place around. Their training sessions are shot like a martial arts film, and the movie is eager to take as many tangents as possible when introducing the characters. (One might say all these ingredients blend together to make a delectable broth!)

This was a surprise international hit at the time, when off-the-wall Japanese entertainment didn't regularly break through in the West. Many famous chefs point to this film as being their first exposure to lavish cuisine cinema.

During one challenge, Jaeda was shooting a commercial where she was paired with a male model who expressed he doesn't like Black women

Critics examine the handling of the uncomfortable moment on E!'s series, Dirty Rotten Scandals

Jaeda Young was subjected to an uncomfortable situation with a male model, on camera.

In E!'s series, Dirty Rotten Scandals, they revisit a challenge that saw the models kissing a male model in a commercial. The model Jaeda was paired with said at a dinner out the evening prior that when it came to Black women, "I don't like [them]."

In a clip from the episode, Banks tells the cycle 7 contestant, "Well you're going to have to give him a kiss that makes him love some Black girls, cuz what do they say? Once they go Black..."

Jaeda is visibly uncomfortable as she responds, "They don't go back." Later, she's seen in tears as she prepares to shoot the scene.

"She expressed her discomfort over and over and over again and they made her do a fake commercial with a real racist," culture critic Rae Sanni noted, arguing that these were manufactured scenarios to simulate the modeling world, not make-or-break jobs themselves.

The situation was likened to Keenyah Hill, who was made to dance with a model who was harassing her during a cycle 4 challenge.

"He was hardcore flirting with me, telling me he was going to come to the States and find me and he wanted to be with me. It was just a lot," Hill recalls.

"He was grunting as he was dancing with me, and he stood a lot closer to me than the other models. He had on this tiny little loincloth fabric," she continued. Clips show Hill advocating for herself in the moment and being shut down by the experts on set.

"It was flipped into me being a bit of a diva. When your space is invaded and you're put in a tough situation, it almost feels even more sinister to be in front of everyone. I really thought I would be applauded for speaking up for myself."

Dirty Rotten Scandals: America's Next Top Model is streaming now on AppleTV.
