Gellar shares how she supports her kids' passions, including her son Rocky's dream of becoming an F1 driver
Parenting teenagers can be tough — so when it comes to her own kids, Sarah Michelle Gellar and her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. follow this one simple lesson.
"Discipline and accountability are very important to both me and my husband," Gellar says of herself and Prinze Jr., who share daughter Charlotte, 16, and son Rocky, 13. "It's been our secret weapon."
"We're known for being on time, knowing our stuff, not being crazy to work with. And so I think that discipline's important in life and accountability for the mistakes or missteps and all of that," she continues. "In terms of myself as a parent...we both grew up very differently than our kids are growing up. We both grew up with single parents, not knowing where the next paycheck was going to come from."

Gellar explains that while she went to a great school, she was able to go because she was on a scholarship. Prinze Jr. didn't have that same educational opportunity. And now, their kids are able to go to great schools because of their parents' success.
"And so because of that, we do have to sometimes shift our expectations because they haven't had to work as hard," she says. "So you almost doubly have to teach them how to understand and be responsible."

"I think that this generation, there's an immediacy, right? Everything is now," continues Gellar. "You want to watch something, you press a button and it's there. You want food, order it. I had to go out and go pick up the food. And so you really do have to shift the mindset and make sure that you're teaching them within the world they live in."

Gellar admits that she's sometimes guilty of thinking about a "different time" or a "different life."
"I just want my kids to be disciplined at whatever it is they do," she explains. "My daughter was a dancer and I was a dance mom sitting at those competitions. And when she decided it wasn't for her, I told her, 'Okay, but you have to finish. You have to see that out. That's important.'"
The mom of two says her younger child, Rocky, is interested in being an F1 driver when he's older. But she's not sure how to instill that discipline in him, since he can't drive a car yet. For now, he's already setting records at their local go-kart racing arena.
"How do we foster that for him? I don't know a lot about F1 and racing, so it's like finding those contacts," says Gellar. "And luckily, I worked with someone who's quite a prominent racer — Patrick Dempsey."
