For generations across the South, black-eyed peas have traditionally been served on New Year's Day.

The dish is associated with a "mystical and mythical power to bring good luck" in the year ahead, according to writer John Egerton in his book "Southern Food: At Home, On the Road, In History."

For years, Cracker Barrel served as a reliable last stop for displaced Southerners trying to uphold a New Year's Day tradition. If black-eyed peas weren't simmering at home, they could be ordered alongside cornbread and country sides.

Now, that option has quietly disappeared.

Cracker Barrel Restaurant Chain Pays Thousands To Students, Settling Discrimination Claims

Cracker Barrel once routinely served a traditional New Year's Day fare at its restaurants, touting complimentary black-eyed peas for customers in social media promotions — but that seemingly stopped a few years ago.

"We're operating during our usual hours and serving our standard menu on New Year's," Cracker Barrel told Fox News Digital in a statement.

Black-eyed peas, a traditional New Year's Day menu staple in the South, have all but disappeared from Cracker Barrel (not pictured) and other restaurants.

When asked specifically about the black-eyed peas, Cracker Barrel did not respond.

"Black-eyed peas in the South [are] a super-huge traditional food for New Year's Day," said celebrity chef Jason Smith, a judge on the Food Network's "Best Baker in America" and the winner of "Food Network Star," Season 13.

Cracker Barrel Or Waffle House? The South's Most Heated Food Debate Returns Amid Logo Saga

The meaning of the meal stretches back to Civil War times, the Kentucky-born chef said.

When Union troops raided Southern food supplies, they often overlooked black-eyed peas, supposedly considering them animal feed. That made them a staple food for Southerners during a time of scarcity and a symbol of good fortune, according to Elevating Kitchen.

The dish also endured because it was accessible.

Cracker Barrel told Fox News Digital it's serving a standard menu on New Year's Day.

"Another reason was black-eyed peas [were] cheap to buy and could feed a huge family," Smith told Fox News Digital.

Alongside collard greens, associated with money, and cornbread, symbolizing gold, black-eyed peas became a cornerstone of the Southern New Year's table.

Cracker Barrel Bets On Free Pancakes, Hearty Fall Menu To Win Back Diners After Logo Flop

That ritual extended beyond home kitchens to restaurant tables, including Tennessee-based Cracker Barrel.

Sarah Moore, Cracker Barrel's chief marketing officer, told Fox News Digital last year that menu decisions reflect a balance between regional tradition and national footprint.

Sarah Moore, Cracker Barrel's chief marketing officer, told Fox News Digital in May that the company wants to balance its national footprint with a "localized regional strategy."

"I think there are two strategies here," Moore said in May. "I think, first and foremost, what we will focus on as we continue to evolve the menu is a localized regional strategy as well. We operate in 44 states. I think we have a great opportunity to bring more localized flavors and regionality into our menu."

At the same time, Moore emphasized the brand's identity, which faced public scrutiny last year amid its abandoned logo change and restaurant redesign.

"But the other side of it is that destination menu — [the] country comforts and classics that we're known for," she said. "So, we will continue to look and evolve as to how we bring those country classics in and keep all the classics that everybody loves about Cracker Barrel on the menu."

Moore acknowledged the emotional pull of the traditional New Year's meal.

Cracker Barrel returned to its old logo after facing public backlash.

"I actually do make it every single year," she said. "I am married to a man from Kentucky."

Moore added, "It is something we will continue to look at as we build out our pipeline."

Rachel Love, a Tennessee mother and self-proclaimed Cracker Barrel lover who championed its classic look and criticized its failed makeover, told Fox News Digital that black-eyed peas were a New Year's Day staple at her dinner table.

"My mom would have a pot of black-eyed peas simmering on the stove for good luck in the year ahead," Love said. "She'd scoop up a spoonful, hold it out and say, 'Here, try it. You don't want to start the year off with bad luck.'"

Love also recalled her late grandmother's routine.

"During the years [that] black-eyed peas were offered as a side, she would get hers from Cracker Barrel, ordering the Country Vegetable Plate," Love said.

Customers are seen dining inside a Cracker Barrel Old Country Store restaurant in Stuart, Florida.

Smith said he still turns to restaurants to serve them when circumstances require it, acknowledging that mom-and-pop eateries in the South are among the last to do so.

David, Brooklyn and Victoria no longer follow each other on Instagram as of December

The Beckham family's rift will seemingly carry into 2026.

On Jan. 1, Romeo Beckham, the 23-year-old son of David and Victoria Beckham, noticeably excluded his older brother, Brooklyn, in an Instagram recap of his 2025.

The roundup included multiple photos of Romeo hanging out with his younger brother, Cruz, 20, and a sweet snapshot with his sister Harper, 14, on a jet ski. Romeo also shared a photo taken with his mom at what appeared to be a party.

In addition to not including Brooklyn, 26, in his post, Romeo tagged his mom, dad, and all of siblings, except for the Cloud23 founder underneath a "Love you all" in the caption. He also wrote, "Thanks 2025 now off to an even better 2026."

Only a day before, David made headlines for also sharing family photos in which Brooklyn was absent. In his caption, the former athlete wrote that he felt "very lucky" to have lived incredible moments in 2025, from celebrating his 50th birthday to getting knighted by King Charles.

"I'm so grateful to my incredible wife, my amazing children, my friends and team I work with every single day[,] nothing would have been possible without you all...," David added, "But as Sir Alex Ferguson would say 'Onto the the next'," he continued. "Thank you for the incredible memories I will forever remember 2025 @victoriabeckham I love you & our kids."

Roughly eight hours after sharing the post, the former soccer star then shared old photos of him and Brooklyn to his Instagram Stories. One of the pictures was one of him and his eldest and the other a group photo with Victoria and their four children. "I love you all so much," he wrote, as well as, "I love you all, Love Daddy x. On to 2026."

In December, Victoria, David and Brooklyn continued to spark speculations about their rift after they all unfollowed each other on Instagram. Brooklyn also no longer followers either of his brothers on Instagram, nor do they follow him back. The same goes for for Nicola Peltz, who Brooklyn wed in 2022, which is when the alleged tensions among the Beckhams began over Nicola's wedding dress.

Cruz later claimed that his parents were unexpectedly "blocked" by Brooklyn.

Earlier this year, a source told PEOPLE that the rift rumors between the pair were true, while a second insider told PEOPLE that the dress situation is "far from the truth."

A source also told PEOPLE earlier this year that mending the Beckham family rift hasn't been easy. "Every time they finally have a happy moment, it all falls apart again," the insider explained. "They've tried to make peace."

"Brooklyn feels torn. It's his family and blood, but he's always had a complicated relationship with his dad. A lot of their relationship has felt like 'business,' " they added.

The holiday season also appeared to point to the status of the family's relationship with Brooklyn, who opted to spend it with his wife and her family. On Dec. 26, the Lola actress, 30, shared a series of Instagram photos of herself posing in front of a Christmas tree with Brooklyn and her parents, Nelson Peltz and Claudia Heffner Peltz.

Guy Fieri's son is waving goodbye to being a teenager.

The Food Network star's youngest son Ryder turned 20 on Wednesday, Dec. 31. To honor his entry into a new decade, the Tournament of Champions creator shared a sweet and silly Instagram post.

Guy shared several photos of the San Diego State sophomore in the birthday post. One shot showed the father-son duo smiling with their arms around one another, another picture was a photo from his other son Hunter's wedding and two pictures captured Ryder and his girlfriend Sophie.

View this post on Instagram

Among the smiley shots was a video of Ryder wakesurfing on a lake. Ryder had a rope connecting him to a boat in his hands but, rather than a surfboard under his feet, the now-20-year-old stood on the Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives star's back.

Guy is shown laying with his stomach on a surfboard and holding his own rope connected to the boat in his hands. In the clip, people out of frame applaud the duo. Guy throws up a "rock on" hand sign before letting go of his rope, the pair riding the waves behind the boat before the video ends.

The lighthearted nature of the post continued in the caption, where the celebrity chef described Ryder as "an amazing son, a hard working student, a devoted boyfriend, and an awesome terrorizing little brother."

"I know you didn't always appreciate your Dec 31st bday when you were younger… but now I think your perspective has changed lol," he wrote. "Mom, the entire family and I are so proud of you on all levels."

A few months ago, Guy praised Ryder for the speech he delivered at Hunter and Tara Bernstein's summertime wedding. "The mic drop of the whole wedding was Ryder," he told PEOPLE. "He did a speech that was not only funny, but endearing and so well presented."

"When he got done, you would've thought that our favorite team had just won the Super Bowl," Fieri recalled. "People were out of their chairs."

*Wicked* has finally released an infamous deleted scene featuring Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater both shirtless as Fiyero and Boq, and fans couldn't be happier.

After *Saturday Night Live* alum and *Wicked* cast member Bowen Yang teased on Trisha Paytas' podcast last year that there was a cut scene featuring the two fit actors "ripping their shirts off," audiences have been left wondering whatever happened to that footage. But they don't have to wonder any longer, because the scene in question has been unveiled online.

*Entertainment Tonight* shared the deleted montage scene from the first *Wicked* film on Friday, featuring Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), Glinda (Ariana Grande), Nessarose (Marissa Bode), Fiyero, and Boq skipping class at Shiz University to frolic in the woods together.

The core group of characters play badminton, picnic, and make lovely memories, unaware that their time as friends is extremely limited. The scene also shows Boq picking up an axe, foreshadowing his fate in *Wicked: For Good*; a sweet kiss between Fiyero and Glinda; and Elphaba gifting Glinda a pair of black boots.

As for how the two men end up shirtless, Fiyero is the first to rip off his clothes after working up a sweat chopping wood, delighting Glinda and Elphaba, who are watching nearby. Not wanting to be shown up, Boq then tears off his own shirt, much to Nessarose's joy.

While Yang previously said the scene was cut for time, he also believed that it was because Slater was too "jacked" to make it believable that Boq was "insecure" next to a shirtless Fiyero.

Cynthia Erivo explains 'sex cardigan' origin in 'Wicked: For Good': 'She felt safe and comfortable'

Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero in 'Wicked: For Good'

"Look, he is jacked under that shirt," Yang said on Paytas' podcast. "They shot a whole montage after 'Popular'… just to show the audience these are all friends now — Fiyero, Glinda, Elphaba, Nessa, and Boq — the five of them, running around in the fields, hanging out. There was one moment, and there were paparazzi shots of this because they had to shoot in, like, a park in London, of them hanging out, where it's Boq and Fiyero, Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater, ripping their shirts off. And so you were supposed to see Jonathan Bailey in his full shirtless glory, like flexing."

Yang went on to explain that Boq feels "insecure" in that moment, "wanting to look hot too," which is why he copies Fiyero.

"But then it's like, 'Wait, Ethan's got a great body,'" Yang said. "I might get in trouble for saying that. But the movie's out, it's fine."

Who can say if the deleted scene changed *Wicked* for the better, but we've all been changed for good now that it's been released. Watch the scene above.

Savannah Guthrie helped Today viewers ring in 2026.

The 54-year-old co-anchor of the NBC morning show appeared on Thursday, Jan. 1 in a previously recorded segment alongside Craig Melvin, Al Roker and Carson Daly.

"Good Thursday morning and Happy New Year!" Guthrie began the broadcast as the group discussed plans to reflect on the past year and look ahead to the future.

"I'm exhausted, what a night!" Daly quipped in a nod to the fact that the special was taped prior to the New Year's celebrations.

"I'm still writing 2025 on my checks," Guthrie jokingly added.

The show then shared a mixture of day-of news as well as previously taped segments that were recorded prior to Guthrie's hiatus from the show.

It ended with the Today team, including Jenna Bush Hager, toasting to their viewers and colleagues.

"We're so happy to have you, we don't take it for granted," said Guthrie. "Every year we like to kick things off with some gratitude for our Today show family, people who make these early mornings so much brighter and funnier and smarter and really make this show shine."

"From all of us, to all of them, and to all of you, thank you," said Melvin. "We love you and here's to the start of another amazing year together."

"Happy new year!' Guthrie added. "Cheers!"

Guthrie's appearance marked her first since her Dec. 19 announcement that she will be undergoing vocal surgery after discovering nodules on her vocal chords and a polyp.

"Some of you have noticed that my voice has been very scratchy and started to crack a little bit," Guthrie shared during the Today broadcast. "It's not a big, big deal, but I am going to have to have a surgery in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks, so this is my last day for a little while."

The longtime journalist shared that the surgery has been a long time coming for her.

"This has been going on for years, honestly, so to have a solution," Guthrie shared, revealing that she'll have to be on complete vocal rest after the surgery.

The new CNN documentary I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not alleges that Chase was fired after he had a 'meltdown' on set after news that he allegedly used the N-word was leaked to the press

Chase said that he didn't think the show was 'that good'

Chevy Chase is speaking out about his time on and exit from Community.

Chase, 82, is the subject of the new CNN documentary I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not. He and documentary director Marina Zenovich opened up about the project in an interview with The New York Times published Jan. 1. The documentary recounts Chase's time on the NBC sitcom Community, which ran from 2009 to 2014 for six seasons. He played Pierce Hawthorne, an elderly millionaire with an ornery personality.

The documentary includes claims Chase had a "full meltdown" on set after allegedly using the N-word, leading to his firing during season four. But Chase did not talk about his time on Community in the documentary, and The Times asked him if he wanted to say anything.

"It wasn't a bad experience. I just didn't think it was that good, the show," the Saturday Night Live alum said. The reporter pushed back, noting that he "really loved it" at the beginning. "Oh, shut up," Chase said.

The reporter noted that his daughter Caley Chase said in the documentary that she loved the writing. "My daughter can go to hell," he said with a laugh.

Asked about how he felt about the role ending, he said, "I thought it ended great." Pushed, he added, "It was too great a misunderstanding of what I was saying and not saying. I thought that there was at least one person — and another who, for some ungodly reason, didn't get me, didn't know who I was, or didn't realize for one second I'm not racist. They were too young to be aware of my work. Instead, there was some sort of visceral reaction from them."

In I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not, director Jay Chandrasekhar, who worked on Community, recalled the event that led to Chase's firing. Chandrasekhar said that the events began with a "blackface" hand puppet bit written for Chase's character.

Noam Galai/Getty for CNN

Chevy Chase on Dec. 4, 2025

While working, Chevy "said something" to costar Yvette Nicole Brown, though Chandrasekhar said he did not hear what was said. The Hollywood Reporter published an article at the time reporting Chase was "frustrated" with his character's direction and he allegedly used the N-word "when questioning the dialogue." They noted he did not direct the world to Black cast members Donald Glover and Brown. Chase apologized for using the slur and said he was using it to make a point about his character.

But after the THR article, Chandrasekhar claimed Chase returned to set and had a "full meltdown." He said Chase came "storming onto the set, and he goes, 'Who f----- me over?' … 'My career is ruined! I'm ruined!' Like, it's a full meltdown. 'F--- all of you!' "

"And I'm like, 'Alright, let's shoot the scene.' He never ended up coming back after that," the director said. Neither Community creator Dan Harmon or any of Chase's Community costars took part in I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not.

In the documentary, Chase also recalled the abuse he faced as a child from his mother and stepfather. "Not a lot of people knew about [the abuse]," he told PEOPLE about opening up about his past in the film. "Some did, and some came close. But it was my true life." He also spoke about his struggles with cocaine and alcohol abuse.

Chase also says in the doc of his negative press, "I don't give a crap." At the same time, he told PEOPLE, "I can be hurt easily," and "I prefer to be liked, not disliked."

I'm Chevy Chase and You're Not premieres Jan. 1 on CNN at 8 p.m. ET.

Chase Stokes shocked fans when on Dec. 31, he and Kelsea Ballerini announced that they're officially back together after going their separate ways this past September. And along with the update on his love life, the Outer Banks star debuted a dramatic hair transformation.

Photos shared to Instagram showed the 33-year-old actor without his long wavy locks, which have been a signature look of his for the past seven years thanks to his portrayal of John B. Instead, he can be seen with a shorter buzz cut-like hairstyle, which has a bit of a backstory.
