American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn has shared a surprising and heartfelt exchange with Prince William following her devastating crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Vonn revealed that the royal sent her a personal letter and that she responded with a special offer for him and his family.
The message came after Vonn's serious accident during the women's downhill race at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics 2026, where she suffered severe injuries to her left leg. The crash happened just 13 seconds into her run and nearly cost her limb due to complications.

Despite the trauma, Vonn said the letter from Prince William stood out among the many messages she received from celebrities and athletes.
"The way you wrote about stepping into the starting gate with courage and no regrets says so much about your resilience," Prince William wrote. "I hope your recovery is as smooth and quick as possible in the months ahead."
Vonn admitted she was surprised to learn the royal had been watching her performance at the Olympics.
"I didn't expect that Prince William was watching me, let alone, you know, took the time to write me a letter," she said. "It means a lot."
In response, Vonn extended an invitation that caught attention.
"I offered to ski with him and his family if they ever want to," she shared. "Maybe in a while, but at some point."
Vonn's injuries were life-threatening. After the crash, she suffered multiple fractures, including damage to her tibia, fibula and ankle. She also developed compartment syndrome, a dangerous condition that can stop blood flow and lead to permanent damage or amputation if not treated quickly.

Doctors performed emergency surgery to save her leg. The athlete later revealed the intense pain she experienced during recovery.
"My life changed from one extreme to the other in 13 seconds," Vonn said. "I went from being in the best shape of my life, with great chances of winning the Olympic medal, to being in a hospital bed in a wheelchair."
Through it all, she leaned on messages of support from well-known figures. Among them was Cristiano Ronaldo, who wrote: "Champions are defined by the moments they win and the moments they refuse to give up. Keep fighting. Legends always rise."
Vonn also received encouragement from Arnold Schwarzenegger, who had previously called her the "female Terminator," and Wayne Gretzky, who kept in touch with messages and calls.
"Pretty much every athlete I've met along the way messaged me," she said.
She added that these messages helped her get through the hardest days.
"I definitely lean on these messages to get me through the tough days," Vonn explained. "My support system was everything, and I feel so lucky to have so many people who really cared about me."
For now, Vonn is focused on healing, a process that could take up to a year. Still, she is not closing any doors about what comes next.
"I don't like to close the door on anything, because you just never know what's going to happen," she said.
