Ralph Lauren selected the Jack Shainman Gallery to host his Fall 2026 show. The space, with its marble columns and gilded ceiling, was retrofitted with a set hand-painted with motifs of a midnight forest. The floors were blanketed in oriental rugs laid beneath a mishmash of vintage chairs and benches—recovered in Ralph Lauren fabrics, of course. Indeed, Lauren has always been a master at world-building, whether in his stores, his restaurants and cafes, or for his runway sets. This season, his distinct sartorial codes—Americana, prep, polish, even a clever blend of opulence and the outdoorsy—were plenty in the gallery space and on the runway. But there was still room for newness.

The show opened as Gigi Hadid, with barely-there makeup and perfectly mussed hair, descended the center staircase and walked into the waiting crowd. She wore a brown wool set, the top shaped into a bustier with just a hint of a basque waist and layered over a gray turtleneck, with a matching column skirt and a silver chain belt slung across the hips. She carried the designer's signature Ralph bag, this latest iteration fitted with wooden handles and distressed leather.

The collection notes described this season's woman as one with a renegade spirit. In other words, the brand's polished American sophisticate got a little more rugged this time around. Lauren blended aristocratic tropes, some equine in nature, with tinges of dark romance fitting for the current zeitgeist takeover that is the Wuthering Heights press tour. There were nubby Donegal tweed blazers draped with scarves that were pinned to the jackets with glittering brooches. A floral cropped jacket and bustier set was worn with patinated leather barrel-leg trousers. Jodhpur pants were tucked into over-the-knee riding boots, and animal-print stoles were wrapped around wool overcoats.

The color palette of grays, blues, greens, and browns was muted in favor of a diverse range of textures. There were column dresses made of velvet that needed to be dyed twice, once in brown and once in blue, to achieve the desired effect. Mesh was crafted to resemble chain mail and draped into plunging dresses slung with hand-distressed oversized leather belts (something for the stylish romantic girls?). One brown shirt had an ombré effect that faded from shiny leather to soft suede.

This collection felt markedly different from his recent menswear show in Milan, which reminded everyone that his brand is responsible for the blueprint of the modern preppy look dominating fashion today. For that presentation, he mixed the high and low, showing Purple Label with the more casual Polo line. The effect saw concho belts layered over puffer jackets and polo shirts atop camo pants in a manner that was ironically nostalgic—his initial house codes are how people dress today.

Today's womenswear show definitely wasn't a highlight reel of greatest hits. Instead of playing into obvious preppy codes, Lauren embraced what makes prep so interesting today: the mixing of things that wouldn't otherwise go together. Can you wear a sequined cable-knit sweater over a stark white Victorian blouse, then pair it with pleated gray wool trousers? Why not? And while you're at it, tuck those trousers into socks and slip your feet into little crystal-embellished slippers. And don't forget the brooch and the chain-embellished belt.

After the final procession of models dressed in a kind of nuanced glamour had wound through the audience, all heads turned to the crushed velvet blue curtain at the front of the room. An invisible hand yanked the fabric back as the music swelled. Then, Lauren himself appeared, dressed in a plaid blazer and a pair of jeans, smiling and waving, as the crowd rose for a standing ovation. It was evident the audience had been moved, and not just by the sight of the man who forever changed fashion. The collection was charged with a heady energy—it felt like a call to pile things on, pair things that might not match, layer different textures. It was, in many cases, a reminder of the bliss that can come from a wardrobe with a little roughness around the edges. The more we optimize our world and our closets, the harder we hunt for a smooth-brained alternative to everything, perhaps the friction of a contrasting material or an unexpected garment, much like the ones Lauren showed this season, is exactly what we need to feel something
