- Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson reunited Thursday at a Paley Center event in New York.

- The actresses costarred on TV's *Charlie's Angels* from 1976 to 1979, when Jackson left.

- Smith said she is "grateful" to be part of the show's legacy.

Two of the original* **Charlie's Angels*, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith, aren't done with the series just yet.

The two were back together Thursday at the 2026 Paley Honors Spring Gala to pay tribute to the show's 1976 premiere. They posed in simple stances — no finger guns here —as they arrived to accept the tribute at the red carpet event in New York City.

"Kate and I were so lucky to attend and accept this on behalf of our *Charlie's Angels *family, continuing in our celebration of 50 years since the launch of the series" Smith wrote on Instagram. "Grateful doesn't begin to encompass how I feel to have been and continue to be a part of that legacy. Thank you to everyone!"

Jackson and Smith famously costarred on the Aaron Spelling–produced action series for its first three seasons, after which Jackson left, but they've remained close over the years.

The action series, which costarred Farrah Fawcett, Cheryl Ladd, and David Doyle, aired for five seasons on ABC. It ended in 1981, but it has continued to air in reruns.

*Charlie's Angels* has also lingered in the culture via several modern projects: the 2000s movies of the same name that starred Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz; a 2011 TV series starred Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly, and Rachael Taylor; and a 2019 film, directed by, Elizabeth Banks, starred Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska in the titular roles.

As for the show that started it all, well, as Smith said in April at another recent PaleyFest event, it was groundbreaking.

"It was three women chasing danger instead of being rescued from it. Independent, not defined by the man in their life," she said, "And it gave women permission to step out of the mold."

Why did Farrah Fawcett leave 'Charlie's Angels'? All about her surprising exit (and who took her place)

Ladd, who joined Smith and Jackson at the earlier anniversary commemoration, noted then that the stars were bonded by their work. (Ladd had replaced Fawcett after the late actress departed the series following season one.)

"We were all such individual women, but women who really cared for each other,"Ladd said. "Just as the show was, we were there for each other."

Jackson said then that she was actually responsible for the show's name. As she recalled it, Spelling had wanted to call the women alley cats.

"I was looking down," Jackson said, "while [Spelling] was telling me the story of the Alley Cats thinking, 'That's the worst idea I've ever heard in my life. What's going to happen when I look up? Is my top lip going to stick to my teeth, or am I going to be smiling?'"

She said her idea to use angels was inspired by a painting of three angels that hung in the producer's office.

Spelling died in 2006. Fawcett, one of the show's original angels, died in 2009.

The laid off 20 U.S.-based journalists on Friday, the union representing them said, part of a restructuring announced last month that is turning the news organization's focus away from print journalism and toward visual journalism and other revenue sources.

“This is part of the restructuring we announced last month to align our operations with what our top customers need from us today,” an AP spokesman, Patrick Maks, said in an email.

“It’s never easy to part ways with valued colleagues — we are appreciative of their contributions to the AP and wish them all the best,” wrote Maks, the news outlet’s director of media relations and corporate communications.

AP declined to give numbers, but the News Media Guild, the union that represents AP journalists, said 20 guild-covered staffers had been laid off. The layoffs had been completed by the end of the business day Friday.

The layoffs, which had been expected, come about a month after AP, one of the world’s oldest and most influential news organizations, offered buyouts to more than 120 journalists based in the United States. About 40 subsequently volunteered and were accepted, according to the guild.

Tony Winton, the guild’s administrator, said the union had received an email just before 10 a.m. Friday from an AP human resources official saying the company was planning to implement layoffs, and the last day of work was Friday. He said no other information was provided.

“Today’s cuts show just how directionless AP’s leadership has become," said a statement from Kimberlee Kruesi, an AP reporter and the guild's acting president. “The company touts that it is prioritizing visual journalism, yet among the 20 employees sacked today are experienced photographers."

Julie Pace, executive editor and senior vice president of the AP, said in an interview last month that AP’s goal was to reduce its global staff by less than 5%. The company does not say how many journalists it employs.

Pace said at the time that the AP “is not in trouble.”

“We’re making these changes from a position of strength, but we’re doing so now to recognize our changing customer base,” she said.

Over the past four years, the AP’s revenue from newspapers has declined by 25%. Gannett and McClatchy, two of the largest traditional newspaper publishers, dropped AP in 2024.

AP customers now are dominated by broadcast, digital and technology companies. Kristin Heitmann, senior vice president and chief revenue officer, said last month that the company had seen a 200% growth in revenue from technology companies over the same period.

The Detroit Pistons find themselves on the brink of elimination again, going to Cleveland to face the Cavaliers in a must-win Game 6 on Friday night.

Detroit suffered through an epic collapse in Game 5 at home, losing to the Cavs in overtime. After building a 2-0 lead, three straight losses has the top seed in the Eastern Conference looking at an early playoff exit. The Pistons will need to overcome problems that have surfaced throughout this playoff run, such as consistent scoring outside of Cade Cunningham's production, if they want to force a Game 7 back in Detroit.

Although this team pulled off a 3-1 series comeback in the first round, the Cavs have proven they can make the right plays at the end of games. Also, the Pistons may still be without starter Duncan Robinson for Game 6, who is still dealing with a lower-back injury.

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — The number of people deported to El Salvador from the U.S. nearly doubled in the first months of 2026, according to official figures, coming as Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has positioned himself as an ally willing to help the Trump administration accelerate deportations, a central priority.

The U.S. deported 5,033 Salvadorans back to their country in the first three months of 2026 compared with 2,547 deportees in the same period in 2025, according to El Salvador migration authority figures obtained by The on Tuesday.

That marks nearly a 98% increase at the same time that the Trump administration has boosted deportation flights across the world. Globally, deportation flights from the U.S. jumped around 61% between 2024 and 2025, according to data compiled by the Asociación Agenda Migrante El Salvador, or AAMES, and other organizations.

The U.S. has stopped regularly releasing deportation data, so experts instead are relying on other information from countries like El Salvador, deportation flights and other numbers.

The sharp increase in deportations “confirms a real hardening of the U.S. immigration system toward the region,” said César Ríos of AAMES.

The jump comes as Bukele, a tough-on-crime politician, has sought to align himself with U.S. President Donald Trump, and the U.S. government has lined up allies across Latin America to help him carry out his agenda. While Mexico and other Central American nations have quietly accepted deportees from third countries, Bukele has boldly embraced Trump's efforts in Latin America.

In March 2025, Bukele most notably accepted 238 Venezuelan deportees accused of being members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and locked them up in a mega-prison built for accused gang members in Bukele's ongoing offensive on El Salvador's gangs. The incident fueled widespread accusations of human rights abuses.

The geopolitical firestorm came after Trump's government struck a deal with Bukele to accept what they described as transfer and imprisonment of foreign criminals to El Salvador. Under the agreement, El Salvador would receive $6 million from the U.S.

In April, the Trump administration mistakenly deported a Maryland resident and Salvadoran citizen Kilmar Abrego García with protected status in the U.S., becoming yet another legal and political flashpoint. Bukele originally refused to return Abrego García and denied accusations of beating and torture — which have been widely documented by human rights groups in Salvadoran prisons.

He was later returned to the U.S. in June to face charges that he helped bring immigrants to the U.S. illegally, something his lawyers call “baseless.” Abrego García has pleaded not guilty and asked a judge to dismiss his case as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that it hoped to deport Abrego García to Liberia.

Even more recently, Bukele joined a coalition of other right-leaning Trump allies in a group of countries that Trump dubbed the Shield of the Americas, purportedly aimed at cracking down on criminal groups in Latin America, even though the two most essential countries in that effort — Mexico and Colombia — refused to attend.

Meanwhile, many migrants in the U.S. are turning their eyes on U.S. Supreme Court arguments as Trump seeks to stop shielding hundreds of thousands of migrants from Haiti and Syria, a decision many of the more than 200,000 Salvadoran migrants with temporary protections worry might eventually affect them.

Bukele has helped the U.S. with its immigration agenda even before Trump entered office.

In 2023, El Salvador’s government began to slap a $1,130 fee on travelers from dozens of countries connecting through the nation’s main airport, amid pressure from the Biden administration to help control the number of migrants moving toward the United States' southern border. At the same time, migration from El Salvador, fueled by gang violence and poverty, dipped following Bukele's contentious war on the gangs.

Analysts said that Bukele's government used dips in migration as a bargaining chip to offset human rights criticisms by the U.S.

In most seasons, a meeting between the only two first-round quarterbacks in the NFL Draft would be one of the most anticipated games on the schedule.

This season, it might be Kirk Cousins vs. Matthew Stafford.

That’s not too bad, considering Stafford is the reigning MVP and Cousins has had a good career too. But when the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Rams meet, Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson might both remain on their sidelines all game. Mendoza will probably start the season behind Cousins, who got $20 million to let Mendoza sit and learn for however long the Raiders decide is prudent. Mendoza probably will start games at some point this season. That might not be the case for Simpson, who won’t see the field for the Rams if Stafford stays healthy.

The Rams-Raiders matchup likely not featuring both first-round quarterbacks represents what is an unusual season for rookies. The 2026 NFL Draft class was viewed as thinner than most classes. Therefore, there won’t be a ton of high-profile rookie showdowns during the season, which is usually a highlight of the NFL’s regular-season schedule.

But there will be a few fun rookie vs. rookie battles that will be worth tuning in for. Here are the best rookie spotlight games on the schedule.

Seahawks vs. Cardinals: RB Jeremiyah Love vs. Jadarian Price

Two running backs went in the first round, and no other back went until late in the third round. And the only two backs to go in the first 89 picks of the draft were college teammates.

Love and Price both went from Notre Dame to the NFC West. They’ll face off twice per season, which will be fun. While Love is considered to be by far the better prospect, Price is a bit of an unknown because he didn’t play that much behind Love in college. But he was talented enough to be a first-round pick by the Super Bowl champions. If Price is as good as Seattle believes, it will be fun to compare the Fighting Irish backs’ careers. And we get to see them on the same field twice per season.

Notre Dame running backs Jadarian Price (24) and Jeremiyah Love (4) were both first-round NFL Draft picks. (Photo by James Black/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) (Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)Raiders at Jets: QB Fernando Mendoza vs. EDGE David Bailey

Mendoza should be playing at some point this season. Hopefully it’s by the time the Raiders go to New York to face the Jets.

We don’t often get to see the top two picks on the field together as rookies. Mendoza was the clear first pick of the draft, and then the Jets took Bailey over some other talented defensive players at No. 2 overall. Bailey chasing around Mendoza would make for some fun theater.

Cowboys vs. Giants: S Caleb Downs vs. EDGE Arvell ReeseCowboys vs. Commanders: Downs vs. LB Sonny StylesGiants vs. Commanders: Reese vs. Styles

The last time a school had four picks in the top 11 of a draft, it was Michigan State in 1967. The Buckeyes matched that this year, and three of those players were elite defenders. They all landed in the NFC East.

That means the old college teammates will reunite twice per season. Downs, Reese and Styles won’t be on the field at the same time, but when their defenses are playing we can gauge the progress from each of the Buckeye defenders. And the Cowboys, Commanders and Giants all get to face the Titans this season, so we can see them all try to chase down Ohio State receiver Carnell Tate, who was the fourth overall pick to Tennessee.

Eagles at Titans: WR Makai Lemon vs. WR Carnell Tate

Four receivers went in the top 20 picks of the NFL Draft. One of them, Saints rookie Jordyn Tyson, doesn’t face the Titans or Eagles this season. But the Eagles and Titans meet up, meaning that we can see two of the top three receivers in the draft on opposite sides.

Tate was the fourth pick and an elite prospect, but Lemon was also highly thought of before the draft and ended up with a good Eagles team. We can check in for this game to see how two of the top skill-position players in the draft are progressing.

Browns at Buccaneers: OT Spencer Fano vs. EDGE Rueben Bain Jr.

In most of these matchups, the rookies aren’t doing direct battle against each other. This one should feature plenty of reps between Fano, the top offensive lineman selected in the NFL Draft at ninth overall by the Browns, against Bain, who was taken 15th by the Buccaneers. Bain was considered a potential top-five prospect at times early in the pre-draft process but he slipped a bit and the Buccaneers were happy to take him. We’ll get to see how one of the top edge defenders in the NFL Draft fares against the draft’s top tackle.

Jets at Chiefs: EDGE David Bailey, TE Kenyon Sadiq, WR Omar Cooper Jr. vs. CB Mansoor Delane, DL Peter Woods

You won’t see many games that feature five first-round rookies, because it’s rare for an NFL team to have three first-round picks. But the Jets did, and they have four opponents this season (Miami twice, Kansas City, Cleveland, Tennessee) that had two first-round picks.

The Chiefs stand out as a fun matchup against the New York’s trio of rookies, because four first-round picks should be on the field at the same time when the Jets have the ball. We could see some reps of Delane, the sixth pick of the draft, covering Cooper, who went 29th. For those who like tracking rookies, this should be a good matchup for it.
