ZOUK MOSBEH, Lebanon — Almost made homeless during Israeli bombing that badly damaged her home in Tyre, southern Lebanon, two years ago, Rose El Khoury salvaged what she could and rebuilt.

Two years later, the home in Tyre that she shared with her husband and three children is a pile of rubble.

"In 2024, it was livable, even though we didn't have the money to fix it," El Khoury, a housewife in her 30s whose husband is serving with the Lebanese army, told NBC News in a telephone interview earlier this week. Today, she said, "my house is on the ground. So there is no hope to return."

El Khoury and her children are among more than 1 million people who have been forcibly displaced from their homes in Lebanon, mainly in the south, amid a sweeping aerial and ground assault by Israeli forces as Israel looks to establish a "security zone" there.

'No place to go back'

Israel began its invasion after Iranian proxy group Hezbollah launched strikes on the country from Lebanon in retaliation for the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, which has escalated into a wider regional conflict.

In the weeks since, fears of a long-term occupation of southern Lebanon have grown, with Israel moving to establish a buffer zone in the area, leveling homes and destroying bridges over the Litani River, which connects the south to the rest of Lebanon, while taking control of what crossings remain.

Israel says the buffer zone is necessary to keep the threat of Hezbollah's rockets away from its border, and its Defense Minister Israel Katz has warned that the hundreds of thousands of families displaced from the south will not be able to return to their homes, or what is left of them, until the safety of the residents of northern Israel can be guaranteed.

More than 1,300 people have been killed across Lebanon and over 4,000 injured since the current war began, according to the Lebanese government.

"It is devastating," said El Khoury, who is now living in a single room at a temporary shelter in Sehayleh in the Keserwan District, northeast of Beirut, with her three children, ages 8, 6 and 4. She says they have struggled to get access to enough food and basic supplies.

"There is no place to go back."

Dire circumstances

Humanitarian workers on the ground have described dire circumstances for hundreds of thousands of people displaced across the country, with many sleeping on city streets and in cars in and around the country's capital, Beirut, as aid groups call for more funding to prepare for the possibility of "long-term displacement."

"Even if there was some sort of ceasefire, we already know that there are some regions in the south that have been taken over," Dr. Tania Baban, the Lebanon country director for the Chicago-based nonprofit MedGlobal, told NBC News in a phone interview Friday.

"So, now you have the concern of people who will not be able to — I hope not — but possibly ever go back to their land," she said.

Abbas Bazoun, 46, said he, his wife and their four children have been living out of their van for weeks now after being displaced from their home in Deir Aames in southern Lebanon.

He said they were barred from bringing their family dog into shelters and, refusing to abandon their pet, had little choice but to sleep in their vehicle.

"My dog is very dear to me, and I cannot give him away," said Bazoun. He said his family still had yet to learn whether their home remained intact, but that his small shop selling fruits and vegetables had been destroyed in Israel's offensive.

He said his wife has been left traumatized and suffered a "nervous breakdown" from living through the Israeli fire. "We faced a lot of bombing before we left," he said.

Sectarian tensions 'brewing'

Meanwhile, humanitarian groups have also warned of growing sectarian tensions, with displaced people being turned away from communities they have sought refuge in over fears they could potentially be Hezbollah members.

Multiple groups, including the United Nations and MedGlobal, previously told NBC News that they had heard of local municipalities seeking to discourage residents from renting homes to displaced people coming from the south over fears they could be targeted if suspected Hezbollah members were among them.

The New York Times separately reported this week that the Israeli military has told leaders of Christian and Druze communities in southern Lebanon that they can remain in evacuation zones, but has pressed them to force out any Lebanese from neighboring Shia Muslim communities seeking refuge in their communities.

The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News on the allegations.

"I think there's a lot of anxiety. There's a lot of concern," Imran Riza, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon, said in a phone interview on Friday.

"Compared to 2024, there is much more of a sense of insecurity and tension amongst both the host populations and the displaced population," he said.

Dany Makhlouf, a social activist from Achrafieh, a Christian neighborhood in Beirut, said people there did not want shelters set up in the area after past "issues" during previous rounds of conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.

He said in some instances, displaced people had "put Hezbollah flags in the schools, which created tensions among the residents."

"Remember, we belong to different political parties, and to us, Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into this war and previous wars," he said.

Israel occupied southern Lebanon until 2000 and has frequently launched attacks on the area in recent decades, striking out at Hezbollah, which was first founded in the 1980s when Israel occupied southern Lebanon following attacks between the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Israeli military. Hezbollah has long supported the destruction of Israel.

The Lebanese government vowed in 2024 to disarm the militant group as part of a U.N.-brokered effort to bring the previous conflict to an end, but there has been little progress in doing so since.

Bechara Gholam, the mayor of Rmeil, a Beirut neighborhood in the area of Achrafieh, said there were no shelters for displaced people there.

Gholam said that if displaced people do seek to rent apartments in the area, their names are sent to the government for confirmation that they are not known to be involved in "any activity related to Hezbollah." If they are cleared, Gholam said, "we don't have any problem."

"The security of our neighborhood is a priority to us," the mayor said.

Baban said she was growing increasingly concerned about the "local tension that is brewing" and by reports of Israel trying "to ignite that type of sectarian tension."

Meanwhile, she worried what would happen to displaced families if Israel does press on with a longer-term occupation of southern Lebanon.

"To be honest, we're all hoping for a miracle," she said.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 rattled parts of northern and eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan late Friday, killing at least eight people in Afghanistan, authorities said.

The region is highly seismically active, and quakes have caused thousands of deaths in recent years. Friday's earthquake had an epicenter in the Hindu Kush mountain range, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) east of the Afghan city of Kunduz, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Hafizullah Basharat, a spokesman for the Kabul governor, said eight people were killed and a child was injured when a house collapsed on the outskirts of the capital. He said all were members of the same family.

Kabul is roughly 290 kilometers (180 miles) southwest of the epicenter. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from areas closer to the epicenter. The area is remote, and it can often take several hours before local authorities can relay information back to Kabul.

With the epicenter at a depth of over 180 kilometers, the quake jolted a wide swath of Afghanistan and Pakistan. In Pakistan, it was felt in the cities and towns of Islamabad, Peshawar, Chitral, Swat and Shangla, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in Pakistan.

Afghanistan's Health Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman said Kabul and provincial health authorities had been put on alert.

Last August, a 6.0 earthquake that struck a remote, mountainous part of eastern Afghanistan killed more than 2,200 people, leveling villages and trapping people under rubble. Most casualties were in Kunar province, where people typically live in wood and mud-brick houses along steep valleys.

In November, a 6.3 earthquake struck Samangan province in northern Afghanistan, killing at last 27 people and injuring more than 950. It also damaged historical sites, including Afghanistan's famed Blue Mosque in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, and the Bagh-e-Jahan Nama Palace in Khulm.

On Oct. 7, 2023, a 6.3 quake followed by strong aftershocks in western Afghanistan killed thousands of people.

Impoverished Afghanistan often faces difficulty in responding to natural disasters, especially in remote regions. Many homes in rural and outlying areas are made from mud bricks and wood, with many poorly built.

Actress Kate Beckinsale has alleged that Oscar-nominated actor Mark Ruffalo ignored her outreach after she claimed an agent fired her for liking a social media post about a ceasefire in Gaza.

In a series of comments (which appear to have been deleted) under a promotional Instagram video in which Ruffalo, 58, speaks about the new documentary Palestine 36, Beckinsale, 52, wrote that "it must be so nice not to be fired by your Agent for liking a post about a ceasefire and not supporting the murdering of children."

The Underworld actress continued, with her post appearing to reference the Screen Actors Guild strike that lasted from July to November 2023.

"I guess having a penis in Hollywood really counts for a lot because you've not been fired by the same Agent that I had and she sent me a gift the week before so we didn't have any beef, but I liked a post about a ceasefire and I've got fired on the same day as Susan Sarandon was fired, two days after the end of the strike after nine months of none of us being able to work at all," Beckinsale claimed, invoking the name of outspoken star Sarandon.

Beckinsale also brought up recent losses in her life, as she's long been open about her struggle with grief following the death of her mother, actress Judy Loe, in July 2025, her stepfather, Roy Battersby, in 2024, and her beloved cat, Clive, who died in 2023.

"I was dealing with the fact that on top of my mother having been told she had six weeks to live with brain cancer, and being [a] carer for both of them, the day before my stepfather had had a catastrophic stroke on top of two types of cancer," the star said of her emotional state at the time, "Which led to his death and I was preparing to fly to England to bring him back so that I could take full care of him and I was fired in two sentences after 12 years of friendship with my Agent and yours who is very close to her elderly parents and definitely knew what I was dealing with, alone."

Beckinsale did not name the agent in her comment, but she did tell Ruffalo, "I DMdyou [sic] about this months ago but you ignored me" after her reported message.

In a separate comment, Beckinsale responded to a user by saying, "I'm okay with him ignoring me," and cited issues with what she felt was "male privilege even in the good guys."

Beckinsale went on to say, "It is such a given that of course I did not get a response and I really and truly support Mark Ruffalo and everything he is doing but no I@will [sic] not get a response not here and not ever," before doubling down by writing, "I sent a message to Mark months ago and he ignored it. There is absolutely no reason why he would respond to it now."

She later clarified that she's "not even blaming Mark for this," but she's still "noticing it" in general.

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Beckinsale and Ruffalo for comment.

In December 2025, Beckinsale addressed public scrutiny she received over her body, as she grappled with grief following the series of deaths she experienced in her personal life.

"It doesn't make you feel very hungry, and I don't know if there's some sort of survivor's guilt because it started after my stepdad died," Beckinsale said in an Instagram video at the time. "And it's not like anorexia where you're starving and it's a kind of willpower thing. It's like your body has closed down. I think it's shock and trauma."

The actress added that she didn't want to become a "cruel piece of s--- that would say the stuff that a lot of you guys say to me" on the internet, in response to those criticizing her amid her period of pain. She continued, noting that she wouldn't lash out with "nasty" comments about others.

"It just wouldn't cross my mind and I am so grateful to have been brought up by people who raised me like that," she said. "And I really miss them."

"On Our Way Along" is a Cyrus family affair.

On Friday, April 3, Billy Ray Cyrus released his new song "On Our Way Along," the first song from his upcoming album The Hill. Cyrus teamed up with his children on his heartfelt song, with daughter Noah Cyrus singing alongside him and son Braison Cyrus co-writing and co-producing the track.

In the track, the father-daughter duo sings about the family's Nashville property "where the sun rises on the hill" and all they've gone through together.

"It's all about this hill, and realizing that my whole life unfolded on this hill, and the magic of this place here," the two-time Grammy winner, 64, told American Songwriter in an interview published on Thursday, April 2. "It's all come full circle."

In the pre-chorus, Billy Ray and Noah croon, "Of all the paths we could have walked, I'm just glad ours crossed / And all the battles we have fought, and all the friends we lost on our way along."

Billy Ray describes "On Our Way Along" as a "celebration of all things music and family" that was "made from the heart for the heart" in a press release.

"I'm really proud to be teaming up with my dad and my brother Braison (our producer) for this song," said Noah, 26, in a statement in the same press release. "Braison's produced a beautiful album and I'm happy to be just a small part of it and our father's legacy."

Filmed on their Nashville property and directed by CMA award winner Dustin Haney, the song's video opens with Billy Ray appearing out of a thick fog during sunrise as the track begins.

The music video sees the country star singing in an open field, guitar in hand, before turning the camera to a little girl who seems to be a younger Noah. As the girl walks toward a piano, the video fades into a shot of Noah sitting at a piano and singing along with her father.

The rest of the video sees the pair belting the chorus, "Times running out, I've had too much to kill / I feel it every time when I look out at the hill," with their voices eventually fading as Billy Ray is back into the open field and walks out of frame.

The Hill, set to release on June 16, marks Billy Ray's first album since 2019's The SnakeDoctor Circus and is his first set of fully new studio material in 14 years, according to the press release.

Speaking to American Songwriter, the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer shared he is grateful for this new chapter because he didn't think he'd be able to make music again.

"This is all pretty serious to me, to be honest, because I didn't know if I'd ever get to really play the game again," Billy Ray noted. "[In 2019,] I was the top of the world, the top of the mountain, with 'Old Town Road.' And then 2020 comes, and they give me a couple Grammys and close the door."

"But somehow, by just the pure love of making music, it just happened so organically," he said. "I thank God for this moment. It's a really special time."

U.S. men's hockey star Jack Hughes debuted his new smile after his teeth were broken at the Winter Olympics.

Hughes, 24, alongside Aerin Frankel of the U.S. women's team, threw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium before the Yankees' first home game of the season on Friday, April 3.

The New Jersey Devils star was all smiles at the game, showing off his new pearly whites after over a month with broken teeth from the U.S.'s gold medal-winning game at the 2026 Milan Games. Hughes' bloodied mouth became an instantly iconic moment at the Olympics, after the NHL star took a stick to the mouth from a player on Team Canada just a few minutes before winning the game — and the U.S.'s first gold since 1980 — with his overtime goal.

Hughes had told Jimmy Fallon in February that he would get his teeth as soon as possible, after the host asked the NHL star if he planned on making the broken teeth "his thing." Hughes replied, during his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, that "I can promise you this won't be my thing."

At the Yankees game on Friday, Hughes told NJ.com he's "a big Yankees fan" and shared, "I always come to games in the summer."

Hughes said he was especially thrilled to be throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium on the team's opening day of the season. "And then Opening Day, wow. This is almost too much, that's a lot of pressure! But too much fun, and that's for both of us," he told NJ.com, alongside Frankel.

Hughes also said he's been practicing for the moment for weeks, per the outlet. "My trainer brought gloves and I threw like 50 pitches right before morning skate, and my shoulder was so sore," Hughes said. "I was like, 'We've got to cool it.'"
