Nicole Young has officially left Selling Sunset after season 9, according to a representative for the star

She cites a "disheartening" portrayal and "toxic" circumstances on the show as the reasons for her departure

The realtor has since moved to Nashville with her husband Brandon and recently shared a tour of their new "dream home" on Instagram

Young plans to focus on her real estate career out in Nashville, but remains a licensed California realtor under the Oppenheim Group

Nicole Young is officially closing the door on her time as a Selling Sunset cast member.

The Oppenheim Group agent will not return for another season of the Netflix real estate drama, a representative for Young confirms to PEOPLE. Young's rep says the reality star's portrayal on the show "over a number of seasons" was "rather disheartening to observe."

Young first took a step back from the show in season 9, which premiered in October 2025, after she got into a heated argument with her costar Chrishell Stause, resulting in Brett and Jason Oppenheim asking her to leave the office. Later in the season, she revealed she was leaving L.A. with her husband Brandon Young and moving to Nashville.

Fans may argue Nicole was painted as one of the show's villains when she first joined the series in season 6 after being a longtime Oppenheim Group agent off screen. She immediately butted heads with Stause, and was at one point accused of being on drugs by her castmate.

"Nicole was consistently placed in situations which required her to remain on the defensive, often within what can only be described as unnecessarily toxic and overly contrived dramatic circumstances," her rep claims, noting that Nicole often found herself in the "persistent position of having to defend both her character and her intentions" while on the show.

Such circumstances made Nicole reach a point where "she felt she was no longer being represented authentically," according to her rep.

Her rep also notes that it was "entirely Nicole's own decision to step away from the show in season 9" as a result of her move to Nashville, which "signaled the end of her time" on Selling Sunset. Her decision to relocate to Nashville was unrelated to the events that transpired on the show, she says.

Despite leaving L.A., Young is still a licensed realtor in California under the Oppenheim Group. Her rep adds, "Nicole remains deeply committed to her career and looks forward to focusing on opportunities that more accurately reflect both her professional calibre and personal integrity."

PEOPLE has reached out to Netflix for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

In an Instagram Reel shared on March 5, Nicole shared a look inside her new life in Nashville when she gave a tour of the "dream home" she and her husband just purchased.

"It's been a hell of a journey getting here, but we FINALLY found and bought our dream home and we couldn't be happier!" she wrote in the caption.

In the video tour, she walks her followers through her spacious new abode, which features a screened-in patio, an elevator, a balcony overlooking the front of the property and a catwalk upstairs that leads to her own "filming room."

Nicole previously told Nashville Fit Magazine in an interview published in November 2025 that part of the reason why she moved to the Tennessee city is due to her husband's roots there.

"Half of my husband's family lives in Nashville. His parents actually grew up there, so tons of extended family there as well," she said at the time, noting that "everything sort of pointed in that direction" for them to relocate to the new city.

News of Nicole's departure from Selling Sunset comes after a source told PEOPLE the cast for season 10 is still being "figured out" amid rumors that original cast members Christine Quinn and Heather Rae El Moussa may be returning. Meanwhile, Netflix has yet to confirm that the hit show has been renewed for a tenth season.

In addition to Nicole, Stause confirmed she would not be returning to Selling Sunset after a tense season 9, telling Bustle in a previous interview that the show was "no longer good for my mental health."

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway expressed regret for not ending her friendship with Jeffrey Epstein sooner in a new interview

She told NRK that she felt manipulated by Epstein and apologized for unknowingly giving him legitimacy through their association

The conversation also addressed her health struggles and her family's recent challenges, including her son Marius' legal trial

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway nearly broke down during her first interview addressing her connection to the late Jeffrey Epstein.

On March 19, the Crown Princess, 52, sat for an interview with Norwegian outlet NRK in which she addressed her friendship with Epstein. Mette-Marit was named in the U.S. Department of Justice's Jan. 30 drop of files relating to the Epstein investigation, shedding new light on the apparent extent of the friendship between them.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit sat for the interview at her royal home of Skaugum with her husband, Crown Prince Haakon, and got emotional several times during the rare media appearance as she reflected on knowing Epstein.

"It is incredibly important for me to take responsibility for not checking his background more carefully. And to take responsibility for being so manipulated and deceived as I was," she told NRK, according to an English translation.

"But it is important for me to clarify that there is no blame on me in this situation. It is all the victims who have been subjected to the gross abuses who deserve justice," she continued, her voice cracking. "And I feel such great anger that they haven't received it. At the same time, it's important for me to say that if I've done something that has contributed to giving him legitimacy in some way, it's terribly difficult for me, of course."

Epstein, the American financier and convicted sex offender, and Mette-Marit were reportedly in touch from 2011 to 2014, which followed his 2008 sentencing in a Florida court for one count of soliciting prostitution and one count of soliciting prostitution from someone under age 18. He served 13 months of an 18-month sentence. Years later, Epstein died while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges in 2019.

Mette-Marit has been under scrutiny since the latest DOJ files were released. She used the media opportunity to share more about her side of the story and choked back tears as she reflected on her regret at staying at Epstein's Palm Beach, Florida, house for a few days in January 2013. (Being named in the Epstein files does not connote wrongdoing, and Mette-Marit has not been accused of any misconduct in connection with Epstein. She previously disavowed her association with Epstein in December 2019. She officially apologized for her friendship with Epstein last month, on Feb. 6, and also included previous details about her Palm Beach stay at his home.)

"A mutual friend of ours had borrowed the house. That's why I went there. If I may add, it is one of the things I have spent the most time processing after the serious abuses became known in 2019," the Crown Princess told NRK, before her voice cracked.

"The fact that I have been there and, not least, have a sense of guilt for the victims. I have spent a lot of time processing this. So it is very difficult for me personally and has actually been since 2019, when I became aware of the serious abuses," she continued, fighting back tears.

The Norwegian royal said she had "never seen anything illegal" during her stay at Epstein's home or in her meetings with him, and the people around him were all "adults" when they met.

"But Epstein behaved towards me in a way that I didn't like. I can't hide that," she said about the Florida trip.

Mette-Marit pinpointed that trip as the beginning of the end of their friendship, telling the outlet, "When he arrived on the last day of our stay in Palm Beach, he put me in a situation that made me so insecure that I called Haakon's house."

"But I had contact with him for a while after that. I think it was probably because he was so manipulative that he used the fact that we had a mutual friend. That I am gullible. I like to believe the best about people. But I also chose to end contact with him, and it was because of episodes like that," she continued, declining to disclose more.

Chiming in, her husband Crown Prince Haakon, 52, said, "I remember the conversation. It was a situation she was put in that made her feel unsafe and didn't really want to be there anymore. And which probably also made you think that this person doesn't like me."

The Royal House of Norway previously said that Mette-Marit cut off contact with Epstein in 2014, severing ties with an individual the Crown Princess said was someone she thought she could lean on.

"Epstein was a close friend of a good friend of mine. So I was introduced to him through mutual acquaintances — through several, actually. And they all worked in global health and organizational life. They were people I trusted and trusted their judgment," she told NRK about how she met him.

When asked to comment on her October 2012 email exchange, unveiled in the DOJ file dump about Epstein's "wife hunt," which made news when the files were released, Mette-Marit said that it was sordid.

"It is a 'banter' between friends. There's nothing special about it. It's a friendly tone, and then it's sleazy," she explained.

"I have no desire to have these emails published in the newspaper, of course. I think it's embarrassing. And it doesn't really represent … I was in a period then where I found my role to be quite demanding. I experienced Epstein as someone I could somehow trust in a demanding phase of my life. I was very, very wrong there," she went on. "And I think one of the worst things for me is that I seem so ungrateful. So ... I think it's been quite challenging to get a lot of these emails published."

The princess wouldn't comment on her alleged October 2012 email to Epstein calling an unspecified marriage ceremony, believed to be Grand Duke Guillaume's royal nuptials that month, which she attended with Haakon, a "boring wedding," and said that it was hard for her to end the relationship with Epstein in general.

"I feel so manipulated. And when you are manipulated, you don't realize it from the start. It's information that comes to you at different times. I think I see more today how manipulated I was. Of course, it takes time to process. But there were a number of events that made me think 'this is not good,' " she told NRK. "Then I heard some more rumors that he wasn't a good person. Never that he was an abuser, but that he wasn't a good person. All of that together made me want to break off contact. But we had a mutual friend. I experienced him as caring towards this friend. That probably made me stay in touch with him longer than I wanted to."

When asked what she regrets about her ties to Epstein, Mette-Marit said that she should have warned more people that he was a "bad person."

"I regret and have thought a lot about the fact that I should have told more people that he was a bad person. Of course, I did it with my closest friends, but I have felt a lot about not warning more people," she said.

The royal maintained that she was unaware of his wrongdoings and said she saw how Epstein manipulated other people, which should have pushed her to do more.

"I still didn't know anything about all the abuse. But I had understood enough to think he was a bad guy who people shouldn't have contact with. And I had seen up close how he blackmailed others. So I regret not telling more people, because I should have," said the Crown Princess, according to the English translation.

NRK packed plenty of questions into the interview with Mette-Marit, which was reportedly limited to 20 minutes due to her health.

Before the sitdown at her royal residence, Crown Princess Mette-Marit had not been seen since late January. The palace revealed this year that she is in delicate health as her lung condition, chronic pulmonary fibrosis, has worsened. Earlier this week, a palace spokesperson shared that she would not participate in a state visit from Belgium next week as her health has "deteriorated."

The royal family of Norway has also been under stress since the start of the year, as Crown Princess Mette-Marit's 29-year-old son Marius Borg Høiby became the center of a widely publicized trial. In early February, the royal's son from a previous relationship headed to court in Oslo on 38 charges, including four counts of rape, to which he pleaded not guilty, in a weekslong trial that concluded on Thursday, the same day Mette-Marit gave her interview. A verdict has not yet been reached in the trial.

Flicking at the situation, the Crown Princess said, "We are a family that has been in a very demanding situation in recent weeks. For us, the focus has been primarily on the family. I am the mother of a young man who has been in a very demanding situation. In addition, I have health that requires a lot of rest, and it has developed even more."

Jane Kaczmarek is reflecting on her full-circle love story

The Malcolm in the Middle star caught up with PEOPLE about reconnecting with her high-school love, 50 years after they first dated

She's starring in Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, a revival of the early aughts hit sitcom, which premieres April 10 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+

Jane Kaczmarek still gets giddy with excitement when she thinks back to her early days with her childhood love, Rusty Long.

He was "the big star" on their high school tennis team at Greendale High School in Greendale, Wisconsin and gave her his ID bracelet from their visit to the state fair (which she still has today). Basically, she says, she was "nuts about him."

As high-school romances often do theirs fizzled out when the pair went their separate ways after graduation. Long, 71, became a lawyer and still frequents the tennis court. Kaczmarek, 70, went to drama school and eventually landed the memorable role as one of TV's funniest sitcom moms, Lois in Malcolm in the Middle, which she's reprising for the show's Hulu revival next month.

They each also married and welcomed kids. Kaczmarek married actor Bradley Whitford and they welcomed three kids — Frances, 29, George, 26, and Mary Louisa, 23 — before they divorced in 2010. Long became a father of two himself, now with two grandsons (ages 7 and 11).

Lately, revisiting past connections has become a powerful trend for the actress. In 2024, when Kaczmarek returned to her hometown in Wisconsin for her 50th high school reunion, her best friend Connie asked if she wanted to see Long again. Kaczmarek tells PEOPLE she jumped at the opportunity.

They went out to dinner as a group, "and it was just immediate," Kaczmarek reveals. She couldn't deny it, the feelings she had for him reignited.

"There's one Linda Ronstadt song, 'I think I'm gonna love you for a long long time'" she tells PEOPLE of the 1970 hit. "I mean, for 50 years that song always took me back to Rusty Long."

That night, Long accompanied Kaczmarek home, said hello to her mother, and then, "we went in the living room that hasn't been redecorated since 1968 and just made out on the couch."

Soon, Kaczmarek and Long were spending three hours talking on the phone every night. They spoke of their favorite authors, movies, classical music (Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov in particular) and poetry. "I couldn't believe how interesting he'd become," she says. "I said to him, 'I could not make up a better man in my life right now than you.'"

That spark continued through February of 2025 in Pasadena, Calif., when the pair attended a Robert Burns-themed gathering filled with bagpipes, haggis and Scotch in honor of the Scottish poet. The host asked guests to make toasts, and when it was Long's turn, "Rusty said, 'I would like to toast to romance. I've been in love with Jane my entire life, and I want to ask her to marry me,'" Kaczmarek recalls. "It was heaven."

After some convincing from fellow attendees, he did it right then and there. She said yes.

Kaczmarek's adult children are big fans of Long, too. They "loved him from the minute they met him," she explains, partly thanks to his Wisconsin charm. She also says, they wanted to see their mother in love. "Their father [Whitford] had gotten married a couple years earlier. And the thing children want, they really want their parent to be happy," Kaczmarek says.

All three children were in attendance for her July 5, 2025 wedding, along with Long's kids and grandkids, during a ceremony fittingly held in a barn in the Badger State.

Kaczmarek describes the scene as a "summer party" complete with a string quartet, the University of Wisconsin Marching Band, plenty of their childhood pals and other "Wisconsin stuff" ("walleye pike fish and the cheese curds and bratwurst").

Now happily married, Kaczmarek and Long are splitting time between their home state and Pasadena. She's also reconnecting with someone else from her past — Lois, the lovable mom from the Fox hit, Malcolm in the Middle, which ran from 2000-2006. The role scored her seven consecutive Emmy noms and taught her a bit about love over the years, too.

"Trust your instincts," she says of what she's learned from Lois.

As for what she's now taking away from this full-circle romance with Long: "You can be really corny because part of you is still feeling like a high school kid," Kaczmarek says.

"It's at that part of your life now where we both had other spouses. Our children are raised, our careers have gone well. It's like a fairy tale."

'The Matrix 5' Is Happening. But What Do We Know About It?Warner Bros.

Despite Lana Wachowski writing and directing 2021's The Matrix Resurrections as a rebuke to endless Hollywood franchising and declaring under no uncertain terms that the saga belongs to her and her sister Lilly, a fifth Matrix movie is now in development and coming soon. But when? How? And what the heck could another Matrix movie even be about?

While there are still more questions than answers, we're now beginning to hear more about the mysterious project from those involved. In a March 19 interview with Variety, Project Hail Mary screenwriter Drew Goddard spared a few words about tackling The Matrix 5 (unofficial title), although he could not divulge much at all due to the very early stages of the movie's production.

"I can't say too much, because we're still in the stage of writing it," Goddard said. "I need to give myself space to find the best story. I think the approach will be the way I approach anything, which is, do I love it?"

Goddard is a self-professed fan of The Matrix and had kind words for the sibling filmmakers who created it. "I love what Lana and Lilly Wachowski did with those movies," he said. "They mean so much to me and I feel like they've had a profound impact on my creative voice. I take this responsibility very seriously. I feel the weight of wanting to do right by the fans, wanting to do right by the creators and wanting to do right for myself as a fan."

When Variety asked Goddard if Keanu Reeves or any of the original cast are involved, the writer shut it down. "I can't speak to that," he said.

In the years after the original Matrix trilogy (which ended with 2003's The Matrix Revolutions), both Wachowskis shot down chances to return to the saga; Warner Bros. approached them "every year" about it, according to Lana Wachowski at the 2021 Berlin International Literature Festival. But in 2019, after the filmmakers lost both their parents, Lana said her grief led her to story ideas that inspired her to reunite with her creations, Neo and Trinity.

"I couldn't have my mom and dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life," Lana Wachowski told Entertainment Weekly in 2021. "It was immediately comforting to have these two characters alive again ... You can look at it and say: 'Okay, these two people die, and okay, bring these two people back to life, and oh, doesn't that feel good?' Yeah, it did! It's simple, and this is what art does and this is what stories do. They comfort us and they're important."

The revelation led Lana Wachowski (without Lilly, who was occupied with Work in Progress on Showtime but gave her blessing) to The Matrix Resurrections, which opened in 2021 amid COVID-19 lockdowns and Warner Bros.' experimentation with releasing new movies in theaters and on HBO Max the same day.

While reactions to The Matrix Resurrections were mixed, the movie is unquestionably a satire of Hollywood's obsession with reboots, remakes, and sequels. In the movie, Neo (Reeves) is a successful, award-winning video game developer of The Matrix who feels alienated when the people around him beg for more. Lana Wachowski uses the movie to reflect on the impact of her sci-fi trilogy on popular culture and how audiences (and executives) remain imprisoned by expectations. One might even say they're slaves to "The Matrix."

Despite the low box-office turnout for Resurrections, work began on a fifth Matrix in 2024 when Drew Goddard delivered a successful pitch to studio executives. The new movie will not be written or directed by either Wachowski sister, although Lana is on board as executive producer. But an uncertain future lies ahead for Warner Bros. amid an impending sale to Paramount. Will The Matrix 5 actually make it to theaters? Or will a mass merger kill it before it even begins? Again, there's more questions than answers. We'll see soon enough how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Rest in peace, Chuck Norris, the original meme.

The legendary figure died on Thursday at 86, but his legacy will forever live on through Chuck Norris facts. The *Walker, Texas Ranger* star was a lot of things: a military veteran, a black belt in multiple forms of martial arts, an action hero, and a true American badass. But he's also the person that the Boogeyman checks in the closet for, who beat the sun in a staring contest, and who doesn't breathe — he holds the air hostage. Or at least those are some of the "facts" that the internet has created about Norris.

In 2005, high school senior Ian Spector was playing around online when he became inspired by a list of fake Vin Diesel facts, and he soon came up with the idea to create a site built around insane "truths" about Norris and his tough guy persona. An internet phenomenon was born. Spector even got the chance to meet Norris once the trend exploded.

"He wasn't as tall as you would think," he told ESPN in 2023. "But he still stood there in a way where he could have definitely killed anybody else in the room." Fact!

A few years removed from the end of *Walker, Texas Ranger* and even longer from his action-star era, Norris quickly embraced his sudden resurgence in pop culture. In 2006, he appeared on *The Best Damn Sports Show Period* and read a list of Norris facts, including his personal favorite: "They wanted to put Chuck Norris' face on Mt. Rushmore, but the granite wasn't hard enough for his beard."

While Spector wrote multiple books about the Norris anecdotes, the man himself got in on it too, penning a 2009 autobiography of sorts that combined his favorite "facts" with real-life stories.

On Thursday, March 19, ABC pulled the upcoming season of The Bachelorette starring Taylor Frankie Paul just three days before it was set to premiere

The cancellation came hours after footage from 2023 was released of Paul throwing chairs at her ex, Dakota Mortensen, while a child was nearby

Rachel Lindsay thinks the Bachelor franchise can't recover from the Taylor Frankie Paul scandal.

Lindsay, the season 13 Bachelorette, was recording a podcast episode on Thursday, March 19, when the news that Paul's season of The Bachelorette had been pulled by ABC.

She reacted in real time on the episode of the Bachelor Party podcast, which was released on March 20, and shared her candid thoughts on whether the TV franchise can move forward.

"I think it's over," she said of the franchise's future. "I was trying to think of a scenario where it could be different, because this isn't just, 'Oh, we put it all on a person. This person did this.' This is the system that allowed this to happen."

"The name Bachelorette, Bachelor is tainted at this point," Lindsay, 40, said. "How do you move forward past that? You can't."

ABC's cancellation of Paul's season of The Bachelorette just three days before it was slated to premiere came after TMZ published footage from 2023 that showed Paul throwing chairs at her ex, Dakota Mortensen, while a child was nearby.

In a statement, a Disney Entertainment Television spokesperson said, "In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family."

Three days prior, a source told PEOPLE that filming on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season 5 was paused due to "some pretty serious stuff happening" in Paul's life "regarding her past."

A spokesperson for Utah's Draper City Police Department then confirmed that there is an open "domestic assault investigation" regarding Paul, 31, and Mortensen, 33, stemming from a February 2026 incident. The couple share 2-year-old son Ever. Paul also has daughter Indy, 8, and son Ocean, 5½, with ex-husband Tate Paul.

On the Bachelor Party podcast, Lindsay said that "people were already mad" when Paul was first announced as the new lead in September 2025, and that "traditional Bachelor viewers were already upset by this decision."

"So how do you trust this name — Bachelor, Bachelorette — that has meant something to people, moving forward? You don't," she said. "You already questioned it when you moved Taylor Frankie Paul over [from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives]. Now it is completely destroyed. Like, why did you guys think this was okay? That's the question that needs to be answered. We're never gonna get that from Taylor at this point."

Lindsay said she "cannot see a world where [the show] comes back," before acknowledging the real-life consequences of what that would mean for the hundreds of people employed by ABC.

"I think you also have to acknowledge that so many people are about to lose their jobs, and that's the irresponsible part too, with the network," she said. "In an industry right now where it is slim pickings when it comes to new shows and people even leaving the positions that they have, the jobs ... do not exist."

"We just have to acknowledge — whoever decided to look past these issues or a video or a background [check], and know that this could possibly come out and be detrimental to the franchise, whether it was one person, multiple people — now, it's a bigger loss. It's not just that you don't get your season [to] air. It's that people are going to be unemployed."

Bachelor in Paradise is "the only show that could come back," she said, but even that doesn't seem too likely. "I don't even see a Paradise coming back," she admitted.

Lindsay was one of 18 former Bachelorettes who reunited to help launch Paul's season as part of the ABC preview special The Bachelorette: Before the First Rose that aired on March 15 after the Oscars.

Following the cancellation of her season of The Bachelorette, a spokesperson for Paul told PEOPLE that she is "very grateful for ABC's support as she prioritizes her family's safety and security," and that she is "finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm." The rep alleged that Paul has had "years of silently suffering extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation."

Mortensen, who filed for a protective order against Paul on March 19, also spoke out after Paul's statement. "As anyone who has seen the video will understand, this is a deeply upsetting situation," he said in a statement. "I am, unfortunately, used to these baseless claims about me and our relationship, which I categorically deny. I am focusing on our son and his safety, and hope that Taylor will do the same."

What Caused ABC's "Bachelorette" Blunder?

They finally did it.

The Bachelorette had its most dramatic season ever — and it'll never even air.

When ABC cast The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives's Taylor Frankie Paul as its next Bachelorette, the network had to know they were making a ballsy move. Paul was a big departure from the squeaky-clean Christian leads of most seasons' past: She was already a reality star in her own right outside of Bachelor Nation, she has three young children from two different fathers, and she's a divorcée. (Not to mention, she's a whopping 31 years old, which is practically elderly as far as non-Golden Bachelorettes go.)

Even the way Paul was announced as the lead was unconventional. Usually, ABC makes these kinds of updates through their own channels, but they chose to share the news on an episode of the podcast Call Her Daddy.

Paul did not fit the typical formula, which is notable in itself, because ABC has historically white-knuckled any kind of diversity — they didn't cast a Black lead until Rachel Lindsay became the Bachelorette in season 21, for example. But for Paul, for some reason, her unconventionality seems to be a selling point. (It probably goes without saying that Paul is white.)

"As a single mother of three, Paul shares the highs and lows of her life with unfiltered candor," Disney said in a press release when the announcement was made. "With humor, resilience and a fearless openness, she inspires others to embrace life's chaos and own their story." ABC chose her knowing she would not play by the rules. In a teaser for the season that will never air, Paul is heard telling the cameras that she wants to get rid of all the roses.

ABC cast Paul with far more information than they would have when casting most leads (often runners-up from previous seasons), including multiple seasons' worth of data on how she behaves when the cameras are rolling. That means that they also knew about Paul's domestic violence charge from 2023, because the world knew about it. The incident was used as a cliffhanger at the end of the very first episode of Mormon Wives.

In the lead-up to Paul's premiere as the Bachelorette, a bombshell dropped that Paul and her on-again, off-again partner, Dakota Mortensen, were facing an investigation for domestic violence that allegedly occurred in mid- to late-February. That news broke March 14, when it was revealed that Mormon Wives was pausing filming amid the investigation. ABC, however, continued to promote The Bachelorette at events, in press, and on social media.

The network probably saw Paul and the chaos that followed her as a calculated risk, figuring that ratings would be worth whatever controversy her season could create. They made the mistake networks seem to make again and again when it comes to dating shows: thinking viewers care more about the drama than about what the show's ostensibly about — finding love.

It's not the first time they let drama drive the "journey." Back in September, shortly before his season began filming, Golden Bachelor Mel Owens came under fire for going on a podcast and saying he would eliminate any woman over 60 from the show. He said this after being chosen as the face of a TV show about dating in your 60s and 70s. (Owens was 66 at the time, by the way.)

Fans called for ABC to replace Owens, and there were rumors that the network was considering it. Ultimately, they doubled down. Owens stayed on as the lead and spent multiple episodes on an apology tour. As a result, the rest of the season was a total snooze. The Golden Bachelor came in fighting an uphill battle with both the ladies and the viewers, and he also just so happened to have the personality and emotional engagement of a dried-out Lysol wipe. He could have overcome one of those obstacles, but not both. Adding insult to injury for the fans, the season ended with Owens making it clear that he was not willing to get engaged at the end of the show, which, as we've said before, is kind of the whole point.

Contrast that with season 1 of The Golden Bachelor, which had record-high ratings thanks in no small part to its sweet-seeming lead, Gerry Turner; wholesome representation of older adults; and heartwarming love story. Owens's premiere got 2.5 million viewers, compared to Turner's record-breaking 4.4 million. ABC likely bet on a more dramatic season for Golden Bachelor season 2 and lost.

It's not just ABC. On the most recent season of Love is Blind, the show's most stable and genuine couple, Vic St. John and Christine Elham, almost didn't make it onto our screens. They did not join the six other engaged couples on what is now a LIB institution: the post-pods trip to Mexico. Instead, production cobbled together a trip to Malibu, which Elham and St. John documented themselves on their phones. The show's creator, Chris Coelen, told PEOPLE that it was because they had "fewer intersecting relationships with the other remaining couples." In other words? Fewer opportunities for drama.

Thankfully, production realized soon after Mexico that they'd royally messed up and got a camera crew on them, and thank god they did — otherwise we would've missed out on the only successful marriage of season 10. But even their beautiful love story couldn't save the season from being widely criticized as "bleak" and "completely broken." And if you're wondering why that is, it's because Netflix cast a crew of aggressive red flags, including an Andrew Tate wannabe, a Tinder swindler, and a sentient cardboard cutout who couldn't even tell his fiancée she was pretty. The season had plenty of fights, but the actual love was in short supply.

Viewers and critics have been screaming into the void that they do, in fact, want to see real love stories on their reality dating shows. Slate reviewed the second season of The Golden Bachelor as follows: "How can a series about finding love basically never feature the word love?" Go on the Love is Blind subreddit, and you'll see post after post about how the show's experiment is a failure because it produces maybe one genuine couple per season. And still, networks and streamers choose to prioritize chaos instead of connection, toxicity over true feelings.

I can understand why they keep falling into the same trap. We live in an attention economy. Netflix hasn't released its viewership numbers for season 10, but Love is Blind was a trending topic on social media for weeks. Season 8 broke a Nielsen streaming record, racking up 1.2B minutes viewed in one week, making it the top unscripted streaming show of all time. This comes even as the show is repeatedly criticized for casting toxic men and faces lawsuits for everything from labor violations to sexual assault and false imprisonment.

Meanwhile, The Bachelor and its spin-offs continue to draw audiences year after year, no matter how much fans complain about the lack of diversity, the emphasis on Christianity, or the commitment to casting women young enough to date Leonardo DiCaprio. It's also survived its fair share of scandals so far: putting a man with openly racist tweets on the first Black Bachelorette's season, casting another guy with a previous indecent assault and battery conviction for the next season, to name just two.

It's not inconceivable that ABC thought they could weather another publicity storm. The Bachelorette may have had a plan to address Paul's charges and toxic relationship with Mortensen. What they probably didn't count on was the disturbing video being released from the 2023 altercation, depicting Paul throwing chairs at her child's father and hurting her daughter in the process. As with many abusive situations that play out in the court of public opinion, we probably don't have the full story — and it's highly possible that Paul is a victim and was reacting to Mortensen's abuse. Paul and Mortensen are both facing another domestic violence investigation. They sleep together twice shortly before she leaves to film The Bachelorette, which we see play out on the season of Mormon Wives that was just released. It's evident she's not healed from this relationship, but ABC chose to look past it.

Now they've learned their lesson in the hardest possible way. ABC has canceled the season of The Bachelorette after the whole thing's already been filmed. The network could lose tens of millions of dollars if it doesn't eventually air the show, and, according to former reality TV producer Ilya Yasmeen, crew members might not get paid. Least importantly, but still inconveniently, 30 men put their lives on hold to film for what has been proven to be an expensive farce.

ABC gambled and lost, big time. Maybe now they — and other networks and streamers — will reassess their toxic behaviors in returning to damaged contestant after damaged contestant. One day, we might actually get the love stories we were promised in the first place, instead of continued attempts to produce "the most dramatic season ever."
