BLACKPINK's Lisa, born Pranpriya Manobal, legally changed her name to Lalisa Manobal when she was 13

She revealed a visit to a fortune teller led her to shorten the name to Lisa

"I mean, I don't know about the culture here, but in Thailand, it's fun to go see a fortune teller," the pop star said in a recent interview

BLACKPINK's Lisa revealed the story behind her name.

The pop star, born Pranpriya Manobal, shared that an experience with a fortune teller led her to legally change her name in an interview with Vanity Fair published on Tuesday, June 23.

She changed her name to Lalisa Manobal when she was only 13. The name, in Thai, translates to, "one who is praised." She later shortened it to Lisa for her stage name.

"I mean, I don't know about the culture here, but in Thailand, it's fun to go see a fortune teller," she told Vanity Fair.

Lisa and her mom visited a fortune teller after her audition for the South Korean media agency YG Entertainment. She asked the fortune teller about her future and received a suggestion that she change her name to something more auspicious.

The Thai rapper recalled thinking, "You know what? I'll do anything."

Afterward, she got a callback from YG and moved to South Korea to join its trainee program.

Lisa also shared how she knew she loved the spotlight from a very young age.

"I feel like when I was little, I never got shy," the performer, who started taking dance lessons in kindergarten, told Vanity Fair.

"I love being on stage. I love to express myself, so maybe my mom and my family saw that they pushed me," she said.

Lisa had her breakthrough in the K-pop group BLACKPINK alongside fellow members Jisoo, Jennie and Rosé. The band, formed by YG, debuted in 2016 and released their first studio album in 2020. They notched five songs on the Billboard Hot 100 with their hit "Ice Cream" featuring Selena Gomez peaking at No. 13.

The singer and dancer dropped her first solo studio album, Alter Ego, in 2025.
