In this week's issue, Milo Ventimiglia reflects on how life has changed since he and wife Jarah Mariano welcomed their daughter, Ke'ala, in January 2025. They are preparing to welcome their second child soon
"I'm most excited for my daughter to have a sibling, someone to grow up with," he says in the new interview
Ventimiglia also teases his surprising role in Netflix's I Will Find You, a new Harlan Coben thriller series, out now
As Milo Ventimiglia is catching up with PEOPLE via Zoom, his beloved dog, Duke, appears on camera. "That's our 100-pound firstborn," he jokes.
"At this point I'm completely outnumbered in the babies to wife to husband ratio," he adds, referring to 16-month-old Ke'ala and wife Jarah Mariano. The actor, 48, and Mariano are "very happy" to be expecting another baby any day now. "I'm most excited for my daughter to have a sibling, someone to grow up with," says Ventimiglia, who has two older sisters.
But the upcoming arrival isn't the only major change the actor has faced in the past two years. Ventimiglia, who stars in Netflix's twisty new Harlan Coben series I Will Find You, and Mariano, 42, a model, are busy setting up their new house in Los Angeles while "still dealing with insurance," Ventimiglia says, after losing their Malibu home in the 2025 wildfires.
"Some people face tough moments in their lives, and they stop. I'm always propelling forward," he explains. "I'm like, 'How can I correct this for my family? How can I take a tragic event and a great event, like fires and [the birth of ] my daughter and turn that into my art?' "

Making art has been a passion for Ventimiglia since he was a kid growing up in Anaheim, Calif. He landed his first TV role—as a party guest on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air—as a teenager in 1995, and his breakout turn on Gilmore Girls came six years later. Another unforgettable role, as patriarch Jack Pearson on This Is Us, debuted in 2016 and earned Ventimiglia three Emmy nominations.
The year after the hit show wrapped, Ventimiglia took on the role of husband in real life, marrying Mariano in 2023. And in January 2025, they became parents. "Life is just different," he says. "Being a father has deepened the well of emotions that I experience."

This, he believes, has made him a better actor. "We deal in emotions, so being able to tap into that well is more impactful for the work," he says. "It also makes the work more important, because I'm not just doing this for me, for my crew, for my cast. I'm doing this for my family, to provide, and I understand what time away from them means and just the gravity of all of it." Because of that, he says, he's "a little more mindful" about what jobs he'll take. "I think about my kids, and I'm like, 'What am I putting out into the world that years down the line, my kids are going to pick up and be like, "Oh, let's go watch Dad's TV show?" ' "
However, Ventimiglia's choice to take on the role of the powerful and alluring Hayden Payne in I Will Find You was a bit more about evolution. "There is a period in my life where Jack Pearson fit. There's a period in my life where other characters that I've played fit. And now I get to bounce around and be a bit mysterious," he explains. "I don't know if people are going to see this coming from America's Dad."

When he learned what his role entailed in the new thriller, "I thought, 'Well, this is going to be fun.'"
As for whats next, after 30 years in Hollywood, Ventimiglia calls himself "the old guy" on the set of his upcoming project, HBO's American Blue. "I've kind of done everything and worked with everyone, which is an interesting place to be when you're 48," he confesses.
"When I was younger, I wanted to win an Academy Award. I wanted to be impressive. Now I no longer feel like I'm acting for myself. I feel like I'm there acting for and serving others. And I'm good with that."
I Will Find You is now streaming on Netflix.
