Chase Young is a long ways removed from his 2020 debut season, when he won recognition as NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. But that's not to say he's already met his ceiling. The New Orleans Saints defensive end posted his first season with double-digit sacks in 2025, and now the 27-year old is poised to take another step forward.

Brandon Staley's playbook has been a good fit for him. Young has been allowed to line up further outside the opposing blocker's shoulder, where his rare combination of size and speed off the edge make him a tough assignment. With 72 games of experience behind, he's seen just about every throw and move from the pocket a quarterback can make, and now he's taking on more of a leadership role as one of the "been there, done that" guys in the locker room.

And he's gaining more attention. Young was picked as one of ten potential first-time All-Pros by Bradley Locker for Pro Football Focus. Here's the case for him:

Young has put his prodigious skill on display before, claiming Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2020 while with Washington. Injuries and poor performance have led him askew since, but that changed in a big way last season.

Although Young didn’t play until Week 6 because of a calf issue, he racked up 49 pressures and 35 hurries across only 10 games. More specifically, Young’s 86.3 PFF pass-rush grade ranked eighth among qualified edge rushers, and his 15.2% pass-rush win rate placed in the 79th percentile.

Staying on the field will be the foremost priority for Young. But there’s no denying that the former second overall pick has the talent to be one of the game’s most disruptive pass-rushers. Playing on a New Orleans team that’s ascending going into this season could also help attract more recognition.

It's worth remembering that we haven't seen a full 17-season from Young in Staley's defense. The rest of the defensive line is being rebuilt, but he gives the Saints a building block to work off of. With Cameron Jordan's future uncertain, Young is beginning to look more and more like an heir to his throne.
