It's been over 20 years since Jill Scott released her debut album, and as the Grammy winner celebrates her first new album in a decade, she's reflecting on the journey that began when she started in the music industry back in her 20s.

"I had somebody tell me in the beginning of my career that if I didn't lose weight, or if I didn't straighten my hair or whatever, that I'd never sell any records," Scott told PEOPLE in an interview published Friday. "That sucked, but luckily I didn't listen to them and decided to just continue to be myself."

Being herself was exactly what the North Philly native needed, leading to a double-platinum debut that was ranked No. 70 on *Slant Magazine*'s list of "The 100 Best Albums of the 2000s" in 2010, and 25 million records sold since then.

"My mother and I had a rough go of it in the beginning... We were in a community where you would hear gunshots on a regular basis. There was a summer when I lost a lot of friends, young men that I knew. My mother taught me to keep looking for beauty no matter what. I just kept finding a reason to believe in myself, to have some joy and create joy around me," Scott said of where she built up the self-empowerment and optimism her music is well-known for.

*To Whom This May Concern, *Scott's sixth studio album and her first since 2015's *Woman*, follows a series of romantic splits and several starring roles on both the big and small screen. When not making music to soundtrack her listeners' lives, Scott has been exploring the themes of life via roles in films such as Tyler Perry's 2007 drama *Why Did I Get Married? *and its 2010 sequel, as well as shows like *Girlfriends*, HBO's *The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency*, *Black Lightning*, and BET+'s TV reboot of the classic 1996 revenge comedy, *The First Wives Club*.

"I love the possibility of becoming someone outside myself for a time... I needed time to be with my family, raise my kid to the best of my ability," Scott told the outlet of her musical hiatus. "I'm in the middle of menopause right now. I'm different in ways that I didn't intend on being different, but I'm here, and I love what I do. It's a thrill and a privilege."

To finally have the album out after over a decade and in her fans' hands, leaves Scott "relieved" she admitted. "My baby's outside, and people are responding to it in beautiful ways and actually listening, which gives me the greatest joy," she added.

- Timothée Chalamet drew criticism for suggesting that ballet and opera are disciplines that "no one cares about."

- The Metropolitan Opera posted a video highlighting the talents of the opera community with the caption "This one's for you, @tchalamet."

- Numerous actors shared their support in the Met Opera's comment section, including Sarah Hyland, Laura Benanti, and Jack Falahee.

The Metropolitan Opera is not pleased with Timothée Chalamet.

The official Instagram account for the storied institution responded to the *Marty Supreme* star's controversial comment suggesting that opera and ballet are disciplines that "no one cares about."

The Met Opera account posted a video highlighting the craftsmanship of set decorators, musicians, costumers, and more theatrical technicians on Thursday with the caption, "This one's for you, @tchalamet… 👀."

The video also included text on screen paraphrasing Chalamet's remark: "All respect to the opera (and ballet) people out there."

Chalamet drew criticism for a comment he made about ballet and opera during a CNN/*Variety* town hall interview with Matthew McConaughey, in which the *Call Me by Your Name* actor discussed the possibility of theatrical moviegoing becoming a more niche medium of entertainment that is in constant need of salvation.

"I've done it myself — go on a talk show and go, 'Hey, we gotta keep movie theaters alive. You know, we gotta keep this genre alive,'" he said. "And another part of me feels like, if people wanna see it, like *Barbie*, like *Oppenheimer*, they're gonna go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it."

He continued, "And I don't wanna be working in ballet or opera, or, you know, things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive,' even though it's like, no one cares about this anymore."

Chalamet — whose mother, Nicole Flender, was a professional dancer who performed with the New York City Ballet — seemed to immediately recognize the impact of his words.

"All respect to the ballet and opera people out there," he said. "I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason."

Meanwhile, *How to Get Away With Murder* star Jack Falahee praised the Met's recent production of *The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay*. "I took myself to see Kavalier and Clay for my birthday a couple weeks ago. it absolutely rocked. bravo everyone!" he commented.

London's Royal Ballet and Opera also posted a similar video highlighting its artists, which began with an audio clip of Chalamet's controversial remark before cutting to roaring audiences alongside text on screen saying, "We care."

The Royal Ballet and Opera also directly addressed Chalamet in the caption of its video. "Every night at the Royal Opera House, thousands of people gather for ballet and opera," the institution wrote. "For the music. For the storytelling. For the sheer magic of live performance. 12 songs from the '80s that have aged really badly

Ah, the 1980s, a decade known for its catchy tunes, very large shoulder pads, and poorly-aged lyrics. It's one thing to put on your legwarmers and play music from that decade while you aerobicize, but have you read the lyrics to some of these songs?

Just like any other decade, the 1980s produced its share of questionable content, and now that it's 40 years behind us, much of that content has only become more objectionable. Here's our list of songs from the 1980s that only seem like innocent fun if you ignore the lyrics.

1. 'Turning Japanese' by The Vapors (1980)

When "Turning Japanese" came out in 1980, some people found it offensive because they believed the song was about touching one's private area. They were wrong – it's offensive for its depictions of Asian culture, right down to the use of fake Asian musical motifs that date back to 1930s Charlie Chan movies. And Charlie Chan was supposed to be Chinese, not Japanese.

2. 'Seventeen' by Winger (1988)

For some reason, male rock musicians over the last 60-plus years have uniformly decided to write songs about underage girls, specifically those who are seventeen. The glam metal band Winger got into the act with their biggest hit song, 1988's "Seventeen," which features the couplet, "She's only seventeen, Daddy says she's too young, but she's old enough for me." In 2008, Kip Winger said that when he wrote the song, he didn't know that seventeen was underage.

3. 'Dude (Looks Like a Lady)' by Aerosmith (1987)

The Aerosmith song "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" had its genesis when singer Steven Tyler came up from behind an attractive blonde woman at a nightclub to possibly parlay it into a romantic encounter, only to find out that it was actually Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil. Desmond Child, who co-wrote the song with the band, said that the lyrics are accepting of the trans community, thanks to the line, "Never judge a book by its cover, or who you're going to love by your lover." However, in this age of greater acceptance and empathy for the trans community, a lot of people will never even get past the song title.

4. 'We Didn't Start the Fire' by Billy Joel (1989)

Lyrics don't have to be inappropriate to be offensive. Sometimes, they can offend due to repetition, self-righteous preachiness, and a stubborn refusal to take responsibility for the failures of one's own generation. This is the fate that befell the deeply annoying Billy Joel song, "We Didn't Start the Fire," which is pretty much a list of grievances filed on behalf of the Baby Boom generation that amounts to "The state of the world is not our fault, and we're not going to do anything about it either." OK, Boomer.

5. 'Parents Just Don't Understand' by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (1988)

The Fresh Prince – better known today as Will Smith – spends the entirety of this song listing the many travails he must endure as a teenager with authoritarian parents who commit such unforgivable crimes as buying him the wrong sneakers. While that's annoying enough on its own, he also absconds with his parents' Porsche and picks up a girl with a ravenous carnal appetite, but she turns out to be twelve years old. He laments that he will likely be grounded for the crime, but maybe he can cheer himself up by slapping a stand-up comedian since that seems to have some therapeutic value for him.

6. 'Girls' by Beastie Boys (1986)

This song was deeply problematic when it was released, and it's only aged more and more badly as the decades have ticked by. It's basically a list of household chores that the band members believe should be performed by members of the titular gender, and it's as misogynistic as it sounds. How this group ended up being the darlings of woke hipsters is a mystery science has yet to solve.

7. 'Illegal Alien' by Genesis (1983)

Just like "Girls," this song was already problematic the day it was released, and it's been aging like expired mayonnaise ever since then. Some of the lyrics describe the trials and tribulations that undocumented workers must endure as they seek a path to citizenship, but Phil Collins sings the entire song in a fake Mexican accent stolen from the Frito Bandito, which makes any of the song's redeeming values evaporate instantly.

8. 'All in the Name of … ' by Mötley Crüe (1987)

In the 1980s, no one listened to hair metal for the lyrics, and those who did would have found some nastiness included therein. While Winger would extol the virtues of courting seventeen-year-olds, Mötley Crüe must have found girls that age to be already too old and shriveled for them, which may have led them to write the couplet, "She's only fifteen… you say illegal, I say legal's never been my scene."

9. 'I Want Action' by Poison (1987)

To their fans, the music of Poison is goofy fun. To their detractors, the music is moronic garbage. Having said that, both sides can probably agree that "I Want Action" has significant ick factor, thanks in part to the lyrics, which depict nonconsensual relations as just boys being boys. The most offensive lyric is, "If I can't have her, I'll take her and make her," which is hard to see in any kind of positive light.

10. 'Eat Me Alive' by Judas Priest (1984)

"Eat Me Alive" is not just your everyday offensive 80s metal song. Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center singled the song out as particularly objectionable, with Gore saying the song was about forcing someone at gunpoint to, you know… eat you alive, cough cough. While she was indeed correct that that's precisely what the song is about, the band insisted that it was all in good fun, and while it might offend some 40 years later, there has been way worse stuff released since then by countless bands.

11. 'Let Me Put My Love Into You' by AC/DC (1980)

From the title of this song alone, it's clear that the members of AC/DC were not looking to brand themselves as allies of the feminist movement. Most of their songs were kind of similar to this one, as they were big, stupid songs about bawdy topics, but this one went the extra step of saying consent was not necessary, as typified by the lyrics, "Don't you struggle, don't you fight, don't you worry 'cause it's your turn tonight." They make it sound like the intended victim in the song has won something on "The Price Is Right."

12. 'Into the Night' by Benny Mardones (1980)

Offensive lyrics from the 1980s weren't limited just to heavy metal bands. Even soft rock artists got into the act, including Benny Mardones, whose 1980 song "Into the Night" depicts the love of a man who's obsessed with a sixteen-year-old girl and wants to show her "a love like you've never seen." The song even mentions well-intended parties telling Mardones to "leave her alone," so unlike Kip Winger, he can't feign ignorance about the song's topic.

Wrap up

Looking back at this list, a few things become clear. The 1980s were not a golden age of lyrical sensitivity, and we were apparently too busy doing the running man to notice what was actually being sung at us. Some of these songs are merely dated; others were indefensible the day they were recorded, and the charts rewarded them anyway. The musicians themselves often seem to understand this now. Kip Winger has been known to change "seventeen" to "thirty-five" in concert, and Phil Collins almost certainly wishes Genesis had stopped at track two. The legwarmers were great. Some of the lyrics, not so much.

Ben Stiller is speaking out against the White House for using a clip from the actor and director's 2009 war comedy *Tropic Thunder *in a social media post.

A Thursday post from the official White House X account featured a bevy of scenes from films and television series, including *Top Gun*, *Braveheart*, *Iron Man*, *Breaking Bad *as well as *Tropic Thunder, *along with the caption "JUSTICE THE AMERICAN WAY. 🇺🇸🔥." The specific clip from *Tropic Thunder *used in the video is of Tom Cruise's character Les Grossman dancing.

On Friday, Stiller retweeted the White House post and made clear he did not approve of *Tropic Thunder*, which he directed and starred in, being used.

"Hey White House, please remove the Tropic Thunder clip. We never gave you permission and have no interest in being a part of your propaganda machine. War is not a movie," Stiller wrote.

This recent White House video, which includes several clips of warfare with the text "Unclassified" above, comes less than a week after the United States and Israel coordinated strikes on Iran.****Reps for Stiller, Cruise, and the White House did not immediately respond when contacted by ** for comment.

The Trump administration's social media presence has been called out before by celebrities for using their likeness or content without permission. A 30-year-old woman was arrested Sunday after allegedly firing several shots with a rifle at the Beverly Hills, Calif., mansion belonging to pop star Rihanna while the singer was allegedly inside her house.

Los Angeles police responded to the report of the shooting at 1:21 p.m. Sunday and quickly took the suspect into custody, a spokesperson told the California Post. One bullet reportedly pierced a wall of the home.

Photos from the scene showed yellow police tape outside the singer's home. Los Angeles police officers were also seen closing off the street near the star's property.

It is not apparent if Rihanna's partner, rapper A$AP Rocky, and their three kids — RZA, 3, Riot Rose, 2, and 5-month-old Rocki Irish Mayers — were also in the house when the shots were fired.

No injuries were reported in the incident, according to Police Sgt. Jonathan de Vera, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department who spoke to the Los Angeles Times regarding the incident.

The LA Times also reported that the police dispatch for the incident noted "approximately 10 shots" being fired at the house, which came from a vehicle across the street from the residence.

The suspect then sped off in a white Tesla, heading south on Coldwater Canyon Drive, according to the dispatch audio.

A source close to Rihanna's family told the Post, "they are all doing okay." The singer has not yet publicly commented on the incident.

No other information, including motive for the shooting, is known at this time.

Rihanna has faced other scares while on her own property in the past.

Back in 2018, a 27-year-old man broke into Rihanna's Hollywood Hills residence after hopping a fence, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

The alleged intruder — identified by prosecutors as Eduardo Leon — slipped inside the property while the singer was away and camped out in the house for roughly 12 hours before finally being discovered by one of her assistants. He later pleaded no contest to stalking and was slapped with a 10-year stay-away order, barring him from going anywhere near the pop icon.

Faracy will also star as Maggie on the new crime thriller, Scarpetta, alongside the "inspiring" Nicole Kidman

Stephanie Faracy thinks fans will be pleased with the new storylines on the upcoming third season of Nobody Wants This.

Speaking with PEOPLE in an exclusive interview at the premiere of her new series, Scarpetta, in New York City on March 3, the 74-year-old actress teased what's to come in Nobody Wants This, on which she plays Lynn.

"I think a lot of great things the fans have been wanting, and different things they hope are happening," Faracy said. "I think there's a lot more relationships, and I think it'll be … it's a dynamic year coming. I think the fans are going to be excited."

She added that she loves Lynn "just being in there stirring things up and commenting" and "maybe in time she's going to find her way, but until then she's happy to believe by just being happy and silly in a certain way."

Faracy elaborated, "That's like a woman that's not all the way in reality, but goes 'I want my dream, and I want it the way I want it, and the girls love me, and he's not gay. Other than that, tell me anything you want.' She's just not going to play the game — only the way she wants."

As for her role on the crime thriller Scarpetta, she plays Maggie Cutbush, an assistant to forensic pathologist Dr. Kay Scarpetta (Nicole Kidman). The cast also includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale and Simon Baker.

"Well, to do scenes with Nicole. It's just the best," she told PEOPLE, adding that "it's so inspiring to stand next to her."

Despite disbanding in 1970, The Beatles have maintained their international popularity. However, not all their songs are exactly beloved.

In February 2026, Colliderreleased a ranking of the top worst Beatles songs. The list featured tunes like "Savoy Truffle" from 1968, 1965's "Run for Your Life," "Your Mother Should Know" from 1967, 1965's "What Goes On," and "Little Child" from 1963.

According to the publication, the top five worst Beatles songs include 1964's "Honey Don't," 1970's "Maggie Mae," 1968's "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?," and "Wild Honey Pie" from 1968. 1970's "Dig It" from the band's final album, Let It Be, secured the number one spot on the list. Collider reported that "Dig It" was an empty song, not worthy of Let It Be.

Paul McCartney Discussed The Band's Break Up

In a 2018 interview on The Howard Stern Show, Paul McCartney discussed The Beatles breaking up after recording Let It Be and 1969's Abbey Road. According to McCartney, his late bandmate, John Lennon, decided to leave the band.

"There was a meeting where John said, 'Hey guys I'm leaving the group,'" said McCartney during the interview.

McCartney suggested that he and Lennon didn't have the best relationship following the band's breakup. He explained that they were both releasing songs "about each other."

"Like weaponizing songs," said McCartney.

He said, however, that he and Lennon mended their friendship before his 1980 death.

"We got over it, luckily. I feel very blessed that we got over it. Because if we hadn't, and then John goes and gets killed, I don't know how I would have dealt with that. I was very lucky because we sort of got back together. It was beautiful. I would ring him and go see him in New York," said McCartney in the 2018 interview.

In addition, McCartney said that he and his Beatles bandmates, which also included Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison, never came together again after the band's split.

- Pixar's *Hoppers *leapt high at the box office this weekend, scoring $46 million domestically and $88 abroad — the best the studio has seen in years.

- Meanwhile, Maggie Gyllenhaal's *Bride of Frankenstein *reimagining, *The Bride!*, crashed and burned with $7.2 million domestically and $13.5 million globally.

- Next week, the A24 horror offering *Undertone *and Colleen Hoover adaptation *Reminders of Him *will vie with *Hoppers *for the gold.

This weekend at the box office, it wasn't *The Bride! *rising from the dead, but Pixar.

The famed animation house's latest effort, the woodlands rebellion flick *Hoppers*, scored the studio's best open in years with a $46 million domestic premiere gross and $88 million abroad, per Comscore.

Outside of *Inside Out 2*'s gargantuan $154 million open back in 2024 leading to a record-breaking $653 million run at the domestic box office, the Disney subsidiary has been smarting from a string of uncontested flops, from *Soul *not even scraping past $1 million in 2024 to *Elio*'s deflating lifetime gross of $72 million last year.

The success of the latest effort featuring the voices of Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, and more spells good news for Pixar. But it was not a weekend of good news for every studio, as Warner Bros. learned when its big arthouse effort, *The Bride!*, seriously failed to launch.

The rollicking *Bride of Frankenstein *revision from director Maggie Gyllenhaal and starring Jessie Buckley barely made it off the operating table with a $7.2 domestic premiere and $13.5 million abroad. Those figures disappoint on a number of levels. Most glaringly, *The Bride! *was budgeted at an astonishing $80-90 million, a number made even more perplexing when factoring in the performance of Gyllenhaal's last film, the literary adaptation *The Lost Daughter*. Distributor Netflix gave that film a limited release before it hit streaming, where it recouped less than a million of its meager $5 million budget.

Second, *The Bride! *was the beneficiary of an ample marketing and publicity campaign, costs that are not factored into that $80-90 million estimate. That means the film lost even more for Warners amid its likely final days before being acquired by Paramount. The film's failure also breaks a long winning streak for the studio that includes *Barbie*, *A Minecraft Movie*, *Superman*, and more.

'Scream 7' slashes its way to franchise-best premiere of $97 million at global box office

Warners' potential new owner fared well at the box office this weekend, as *Scream 7 *continued to add its coffers with a $17.3 million domestic take in week two and $32.9 million globally. That haul placed it at the No. 2 spot on both leaderboards, proving that its franchise-best premiere last weekend wasn't a one-off.

At the Nos. 4 and 5 spots domestically, respectively, the animated sports comedy *GOAT *and brooding romantic drama *Wuthering Heights *continued to do good business in their fourth weeks of release. *GOAT*'s $6.6 million this week puts it at $83.8 domestically overall, while *Wuthering Heights*' $8.7 million puts it at $78.7 million.

It's never easy competing with a strong Pixar film at the box office, especially after parents hear that its strong premiere suggests its a worthy trip for the kids. But next weekend, two very different films will vie for the box office gold with *Hoppers*. The first is *Undertone*, the latest horror flick from A24, focused on a pair of paranormal podcasters who become haunted by a set of mysterious recordings. The second is *Reminders of Him*, another adaptation from *It Ends With Us* scribe Colleen Hoover's vast archive, starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers.
