TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Aid group Doctors Without Borders announced the suspension of some of its operations at one of the largest functioning hospitals in Gaza after patients and staff reported seeing armed, masked men roaming parts of the medical facility.

Nasser Hospital, in Khan Younis city, is one of the few functioning hospitals left in the strip. Hundreds of patients and war-wounded have been treated there and the facility was a hub for Palestinian prisoners Israel released in exchange of Israeli hostages as part of the ceasefire deal.

Doctors Without Borders, known by its acronym MSF, said in a statement all its non-critical medical operations at Nasser Hospital were suspended due to "security breaches" that posed "serious security threats to our teams and patients".

While the suspension occurred in January, MSF's comments in the"frequently asked questions" section on its website were the first to disclose its decision. It's unclear when the post was made, but MSF's site said it was Feb. 11. The comments were a rare public announcement by an international organization about the presence of armed men in or near medical facilities since the war began over two years ago.

MSF said it made the difficult decision after an uptick of patients and staff seeing armed men in parts of the hospital compound since the U.S.-brokered October ceasefire was reached. The gunmen were seen in areas the medical aid group didn't operate.

"MSF teams have reported a pattern of unacceptable acts including the presence of armed men, intimidation, arbitrary arrests of patients and a recent situation of suspicion of movement of weapons," said the statement.

It's unclear who the armed men are. MSF said it was unable to specify.

Attacks on health facilities

Armed groups have mushroomed across Gaza as a result of the war, including groups backed by Israel's army in the Israeli-controlled part of the strip. Nasser Hospital staff says that in recent months it's repeatedly been attacked by armed tribesmen and militias, despite police presence there.

The group said it had expressed its concern to the relevant authorities, stressing that hospitals must remain neutral, civilian spaces. It said its concerns were also heightened by previous and deliberate Israeli attacks on health facilities during the war.

Throughout the war, Israel has struck hospitals on repeated occasions, including Nasser, accusing Hamas of operating in or around them. Hamas security men have also often been seen inside hospitals, blocking access to some areas of the facilities.

Some hostages that were released from Gaza have said that they've spent time during their captivity in a hospital.

Police to be deployed

The Hamas-run interior ministry, which oversees the police force in Gaza, said Saturday police would be deployed to secure hospitals and rid them of armed presence. It said it would take legal action against violators and was in the process of implementing stricter measures to ensure patients' safety.

While international law gives hospitals special protections during war, they can lose this immunity if combatants use them to hide fighters or store weapons, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Still, there has to be plenty of warning to allow the evacuation of staff and patients before any operations take place. If harm to civilians from an attack is disproportionate to the military objective, it is illegal under international law.

Aid groups and rights organizations say Israel has decimated Gaza's health system, forcing most of its hospitals to shut down while heavily damaging others. During the war, Israeli forces raided a number of hospitals and struck others, detaining hundreds of staff.

Impact on depleted medical system

MSF said that until further notice, it will continue supporting critical services at Nasser Hospital, including inpatient and surgical departments for patients with traumatic or burn injuries. However, it's ending support to the paediatrics and maternity wards, including the neonatal intensive care unit. It's also indefinitely suspended its outpatient consultations for 3D burn screening and mental health, as well as other services.

Zaher al-Waheidi, head of the records department at the health ministry, said MSF's suspension would have a significant impact as hundreds of patients are admitted to the maternity and burn wards daily. He said the Ministry of Health would take over maternity patient care, but said burn victims won't have many options.

Israel has been cracking down on aid groups operating in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, including MSF. The group is one of more than three dozen aid groups that Israel has banned from operating in the strip for failing to comply with new registration rules.

MSF says Israel's decision will have a catastrophic impact on its work in Gaza, where it provides funding and international staff for six hospitals as well as running two field hospitals and eight primary health centers, clinics and medical points. It also runs two of Gaza's five stabilization centers, helping children with severe malnutrition.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died in prison after being poisoned with a deadly toxin found in Ecuadorian dart frogs, the U.K. and other allies claimed Saturday.

Russia's prison service reported in February 2024 that Navalny died after having felt unwell following a walk around the high-security facility in a remote town above the Arctic Circle where he was serving a combined 30½-year jail sentence.

He was 47.

Yulia Navalnaya, the Russian dissident's widow, appeared at a press conference on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference to announce the results of a Western analysis into his death, flanked by the foreign ministers of European nations.

"The U.K., Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands are confident that Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a lethal toxin," the British foreign ministry said in a joint statement Saturday, citing "analyses of samples from Alexei Navalny."

"Epibatidine is a toxin found in poison dart frogs in South America," the statement added. "It is not naturally found in Russia."

It is not clear how the toxin, which is 200 times stronger than morphine, was allegedly administered to Navalny.

"Only the Russian government had the means, the motive, and the opportunity to use that toxin against Alexei Navalny in prison," said British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. "We are here today to shine a spotlight on the Kremlin's barbaric attempt to silence Alexei Navalny's voice."

Britain has informed the Organisation on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, alleging a breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention, a press release said.

Since Navalny died, Nalvanaya has taken up the mantle of his struggle against official corruption and President Vladimir Putin's government, in which he survived several poisoning attempts.

In September, Navalnyaya said she had managed to have lab tests conducted in a bid to confirm the suspicion that he died at the hands of the Kremlin.

"We managed to transfer Alexei's biological materials abroad," Navalnaya wrote, without giving any further details about the tests or which countries were involved.

News of Navalny's death drew outrage from the West, where many leaders blamed Putin. Former President Joe Biden said he was "both not surprised and outraged."

The Kremlin dismissed what it said were "absolutely rabid statements."

Navalny's team said afterward that his mother and lawyers were denied access to his body and were told the probe into what killed him had been extended.

Navalnaya accused the Kremlin of hiding his body to cover up having killed him. He had previously been poisoned with a military nerve agent while on a business trip in Russia in 2020 — an attempt on his life that he blamed directly on Putin.

Navalny's body was finally returned a week after his death, and thousands turned out to mourn him at a funeral in Moscow.

Hundreds of people were detained in the days after Navalny's death for simply laying flowers in his honor at memorials around Russia.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military said Friday that it has carried out another deadly strike on a vessel accused of trafficking drugs in the Caribbean Sea.

U.S. Southern Command said on social media that the boat "was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Caribbean and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations." It said the strike killed three people. A video linked to the post shows a boat moving through the water before exploding in flames.

Friday's attack raises the death toll from the Trump administration's strikes on alleged drug boats to 133 people in at least 38 attacks carried out since early September in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared last week that "some top cartel drug-traffickers" in the region "have decided to cease all narcotics operations INDEFINITELY due to recent (highly effective) kinetic strikes in the Caribbean." However, Hegseth did not provide any details or information to back up this claim, made in a post on his personal account on social media.

President Donald Trump has said the U.S. is in "armed conflict" with cartels in Latin America and has justified the attacks as a necessary escalation to stem the flow of drugs. But his administration has offered little evidence to support its claims of killing "narcoterrorists."

A shutdown of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that took effect early Saturday impacts the agency responsible for screening passengers and bags at airports across the country. Travelers with airline reservations may be nervously recalling a 43-day government shutdown that led to historic flight cancellations and long delays last year.

Transportation Security Administration officers are expected to work without pay while lawmakers remain without an agreement on DHS' annual funding. TSA officers also worked through the record shutdown that ended Nov. 12, but aviation experts say this one may play out differently.

Trade groups for the U.S. travel industry and major airlines nonetheless warned that the longer DHS appropriations are lapsed, the longer security lines at the nation's commercial airports could get.

Here's what to know about the latest shutdown and how to plan ahead.

What's different about this shutdown?

Funding for Homeland Security expired at midnight. But the rest of the federal government is funded through Sept. 30. That means air traffic controllers employed by the Federal Aviation Administration will receive paychecks as usual, reducing the risk of widespread flight cancellations.

According to the department's contingency plan, about 95% of TSA workers are deemed essential personnel and required to keep working. Democrats in the House and Senate say DHS won't get funded until new restrictions are placed on federal immigration operations.

During past shutdowns, disruptions to air travel tended to build over time, not overnight. About a month into last year's shutdown, for example, TSA temporarily closed two checkpoints at Philadelphia International Airport. That same day, the government took the extraordinary step of ordering all commercial airlines to reduce their domestic flight schedules.

John Rose, chief risk officer for global travel management company Altour, said strains could surface at airports more quickly this time because the TSA workforce also will be remembering the last shutdown.

"It's still fresh in their minds and potentially their pocketbooks," Rose said.

What is the impact on travelers?

It's hard to predict whether, when or where security screening snags might pop up. Even a handful of unscheduled TSA absences could quickly lead to longer wait times at smaller airports, for example, if there's just a single security checkpoint.

That's why travelers should plan to arrive early and allow extra time to get through security.

"I tell people to do this even in good times," Rose said.

Experts say flight delays also are a possibility even though air traffic controllers are not affected by the DHS shutdown.

Airlines might decide to delay departures in some cases to wait for passengers to clear screening, said Rich Davis, senior security adviser at risk mitigation company International SOS. Shortages of TSA officers also could slow the screening of checked luggage behind the scenes.

What travelers can do to prepare

Most airports display security line wait times on their websites, but don't wait until the day of a flight to check them, Rose advised.

"You may look online and it says two-and-a-half hours," he said. "Now it's two-and-a-half hours before your flight and you haven't left for the airport yet."

Passengers should also pay close attention while packing since prohibited items are likely to prolong the screening process. For carry-on bags, avoid bringing full-size shampoo or other liquids, large gels or aerosols and items like pocketknives in carry-on bags.

TSA has a full list on its website of what is and isn't allowed in carry-on and checked luggage.

At the airport, Rose said, remember to "practice patience and empathy."

"Not only are they not getting paid," he said of TSA agents, "they're probably working with reduced staff and dealing with angry travelers."

Will the shutdown drag on?

The White House has been negotiating with Democratic lawmakers, but the two sides failed to reach a deal by the end of the week before senators and members of Congress were set to leave Washington for a 10-day break.

Lawmakers in both chambers were on notice, however, to return if a deal to end the shutdown is struck.

Democrats have said they won't help approve more DHS funding until new restrictions are placed on federal immigration operations after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis last month.

In a joint statement, U.S. Travel, Airlines for America and the American Hotel & Lodging Association warned that the shutdown threatens to disrupt air travel as the busy spring break travel season approaches.

"Travelers and the U.S. economy cannot afford to have essential TSA personnel working without pay, which increases the risk of unscheduled absences and call outs, and ultimately can lead to higher wait times and missed or delayed flights," the statement said.

- *The Black Phone* is a supernatural horror film about the ghosts who help a young boy escape the clutches of a masked serial killer.

- Ethan Hawke stars as the Grabber alongside Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw.

- The movie is now streaming on Netflix.

Joe Hill, the son of horror legend Stephen King, penned the original short story that inspired *The Black Phone.* His tale of a kidnapped child who receives calls from his abductor's previous victims was first published in 2004 before being collected the following year in *20th Century Ghosts *(which is well worth your time).

"I first read Joe's story when it was first published 17 or 18 years ago," *Black Phone* director Scott Derrickson told ** in 2022. "I just pulled it off a bookshelf in Los Feliz and read the first short story while I stood there. I was like: This is amazing. I didn't know that Joe Hill was Stephen King's son at that point, but I bought it. I read the stories. *The Black Phone* always stood out to me as a movie."

Derrickson's film adaptation, co-written by C. Robert Cargill, expands upon Hill's story by introducing the family of Finney (Mason Thames) and his suburban Colorado neighborhood in the 1970s. A key character in the film that you won't find in the books is his sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), who has prophetic dreams that prove instrumental in saving her brother's life.

With* The Black Phone *now streaming on Netflix, let's break down the horror hit's ending, from those mysterious phone calls to Finney's ultimate fate.

Who's calling Finney on the black phone?

Mason Thames as Finney in 'The Black Phone'

After being abducted by the Grabber (Ethan Hawke), a masked creep who kidnaps local boys using bundles of black balloons and a windowless black van, Finney finds himself locked in a cold, barren basement. A toilet, a mattress, and a black phone (apparently out of order) are all that he has to keep him company — until the phone starts ringing.

Calling him are the spirits of boys previously kidnapped by the Grabber. Though they're confused and can't recall their names, they're able to offer Finney advice on potential escape routes.

- Bruce (Tristan Pravong), a baseball player Finney meets in the film's opening scene, tells Finney about a crack in the tile of the basement floor, which Finney capitalizes on to dig a hole in the dirt beneath the floor.

- Billy (Jacob Moran), a local paperboy, reveals that he yanked a cable loose from the wall. Finney uses them to climb up to the window and yank off the grate covering it. He's still unable to escape, but the grate later proves itself useful.

- Another dead boy, Griffin (Banks Repeta), gives Finney the code to the padlock on the Grabber's front door. Finney is able to sneak past the Grabber as he sleeps and escape, but he's quickly apprehended and brought back to the basement.

- Loudmouth punk Vance (Brady Hepner) talks about a freezer on the other end of the basement wall that Finney could potentially use to escape. Finney manages to break through the wall with the lid of the toilet's tank and unscrew the back cover of the freezer, but is foiled when the door to the freezer is locked.

- Finally, Robin (Miguel Mora), Finney's friend and defender against local bullies, teaches him how to fight the Grabber. He instructs Finney to pack dirt in the receiver of the phone, then use it to attack the Grabber next time he visits him.

While none of these tips lead to Finney's successful escape, they all serve to help him later on.

When we meet Max (James Ransone), he's blitzed on uppers and excitedly sharing his own theories on the Grabber's identity and location with local detectives.

Later, we learn that Max is actually the Grabber's brother, and that the Grabber was operating under his nose the whole time.

Max learns this for himself when he goes into the basement, somewhere he's not supposed to go, and discovers Finney there. His brother is at work, he says, ready to help Finney. That's when the Grabber appears behind him, splitting his head open with an ax.

The Grabber mourns the loss, saying that while Max was an idiot, he was "my idiot."**

Does the Grabber kill Finney?

The Grabber, incensed over the death of Max, says he's going to "take his time" with Finney. "I want this to really hurt," he says before bringing down an attack dog, Samson, to guard the door so Finney can't escape. But Finney comes out on top with the help of the killer's past victims.

First, Finney manages to trip the Grabber using the cord retrieved by Billy, causing the Grabber to tumble into the hole Finney dug on Bruce's instruction. The Grabber's feet get stuck in the window grate, which Finney placed inside the hole, and his ankle snaps. With the Grabber unable to climb out, Finney beats him with the phone and uses the cord to choke him out.

The phone rings again. "It's for you," Finney says, prompting the dead boys to taunt the Grabber before Finney snaps his neck, killing him.

To get past Samson, Finney grabs a steak from the freezer pointed out to him by Vance and tosses it to the dog. Upstairs, he unlocks the padlock on the front door using the code given to him by Griffin. Finally, he's free.

What's going on with Gwen's dreams?

Universal Pictures/Everett

Throughout the film, Gwen has been having eerie dreams about the Grabber's victims. This catches the attention of the detectives working the case, who don't know what to make of her.

After Finney is abducted, she's visited in a dream by Vance, who shows her the house where Finney is being held captive — or so she's led to believe.

The next day, Gwen rides her bike around the neighborhood in search of the house she saw in her dream. She finds it and alerts the authorities, but the house turns out to be empty. It's not the one where Finney is being held. It is, however, the house where the boys' bodies are buried — and there's a freshly-dug plot for Finney.

Coincidentally, that house is right across the street from the one where Finney was being held. Outside, brother and sister are reunited.**

What happens at the end of The Black Phone?

In the final scenes of *The Black Phone*, Finney and Gwen are visited by their father, Terrence (Jeremy Davies), an alcoholic coping with his own history of violence. Having nearly lost them, he tearfully asks for their forgiveness.

The authorities, meanwhile, inform the media that the community's "long nightmare" is over. The bodies of the dead boys have been recovered, and the Grabber has been subdued.

*The Black Phone* ends with Finney returning to school, where he's whispered about in the hallways for having escaped the Grabber. With a renewed sense of confidence, he works up the courage to sit next to his crush and actually start up a conversation.**
