Warning: This story contains spoilers from "House of the Dragon" Season 3, Episode 2, now streaming on Max.

Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) is making his mark on Season 3 of "House of the Dragon."

It started with that kiss with his TV mom Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) in the June 21 premiere episode. In Episode 2 (now streaming on Max), Aemond makes good on his pledge to Mummy to get out of King's Landing and head to the creepy castle at Harrenhal.

No sooner does Aemond arrive than the silver-white-haired warrior sticks his blade into the smooth-talking Harrenhal caretaker, Ser Simon Strong, played by British thespian Simon Russell Beale.

"To be honest, I was dreading that day," Mitchell tells USA TODAY of the killing. "I even wanted to spend more time with [Beale] making that scene. It all happened so fast."

In Episode 1: Ewan Mitchell explains Aemond's incestuous 'House of the Dragon' kiss

Swing a cat in the "House of the Dragon" Westeros, and you're bound to hit a Ser or two. But the "Game of Thrones" spinoff has (well had) only one real-life Sir: Stage legend Beale was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019.

The stage actor is probably best known in the U.S. for his role as the Soviet security chief in "The Death of Stalin" and a small Dionysus role in "Thor: Love and Thunder." But he's a U.K. legend. And Beale is perfect as the politically savvy, fine-food-loving Ser Simon, joining in Season 2.

It's a hot-headed killing from the increasingly unhinged Aemond. Ser Simon had been an ally of sorts to Aemond's arch-nemesis, Prince Daemon (Matt Smith). But Ser Simon had to play after Daemon landed his dragon Caraxes on haunted Harrenhal, claiming the massive fortress for his lover, Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) in Season 2.

Ser Simon made it clear that he'd work for any side in the civil war, especially the ones who could kill him. And he clearly signals to Aemond that the young prince will find some "satisfaction" now that Daemon has fled town.

Aemond, without his eyepatch and his artificial eye glowing eerily, does find satisfaction. He kills Ser Simon and quickly dispatches both his sons.

"Aemond means war," says Mitchell.

However, Aemond takes a stab to the back through his armor. The prince falls in front of the just-arrived Harrenhal witch, Alys Rivers (Scottish actress Gayle Rankin). His final words are, "Help me."

Ser Otto Hightower makes an appearance, but we can spike that major character

The bloodshed isn't over. With Aemond gone, Rhaenrya dragon-waltzes into King's Landing, an entry made possible by peace-seeking former foe and childhood bestie Alicent.

"Don't be afraid, I mean to make this right," Rhaenrya hilariously tells the worried King's Landing locals as her dragon lurks nearby. Whatever you say, lady.

But the new ruler of the Iron Throne has to make a power statement. Killing her official opposing claimant to the throne, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), won't work since he's fled town. A long-forgotten shackled prisoner is brought from the dungeons.

It's Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), 'member him?

Ifans is forever Spike from 1999's "Notting Hill," but was reborn in "House of the Dragon" as the scheming Otto. Prison life hasn't been easy on Otto, who has dungeon hair, sunken eyes and a scraggly beard. He knows that Rhaenrya will have to kill him.

"Just get it over with," he says, resigned.

But Otto is the man who served as Hand of the King to Rhaenrya's father, peaceful King Viserys (Paddy Considine). And obviously, he's Alicent's beloved father.

"If your father had seen what this had come to, he never would have imagined this," Otto seethes at Rhaenyra before asking for Daemon to cut off his neck, since he won't make a mess of it. But it has to be Rhaenyra.

Otto gives up his neck for a clean shot. Rhaenrya does make a mess of it, stabbing into his back painfully. As Otto groans, Rhaenrya pulls back and cleaves off Otto's head. It rolls on the stone floor.

Tellingly, Rhaenrya has to step through the blood to get to the Iron Throne. It gets a little heavy-handed. A shot of the throne reflected through the blood is a little too on-the-nose. But it's a strong symbol.

No sooner does Rhaenrya take the throne than Alicent is ushered in by guards. Alicent looks understandably horrified to see her father's head on the ground away from his body.

Rhaenyra doesn't know what expression to wear when looking at her former childhood friend. But the Queen ends with a firm look from the throne, tears still streaming from her eyes.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — X-rays were inconclusive on Eugenio Suárez's left hand after he was hit by a pitch and forced to leave the Cincinnati Reds' 9-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

Manager Terry Francona said Suárez will have a CT scan on Monday after traveling with the team to Milwaukee for the start of a four-game series against the Brewers.

“Right now, it’s very swollen. So, the X-ray doesn’t say anything because it’s too swollen,” Suárez said. “We’ll see what is in there. Right now, obviously, I feel a lot better than when I got hit. I thought he hit me really good. Was painful, but right now, I feel a lot better. So, I pray to God for nothing to come up.”

Suárez was hit by a 92.4 mph fastball from Mitch Keller with two outs in the sixth inning. The designated hitter was checked by Francona before slowly making his way to first base. Nathaniel Lowe came in for Suárez's next at bat in the eighth.

“It swelled up really rapidly,” Francona said. “The trainers' hope was that maybe it hit a blood vessel. ... He's very tender. So, we'll get more information tomorrow.”

In his 13th major league season, Suárez is batting .208 with eight home runs and 29 RBIs. The 34-year-old was named an All-Star for the second time last season.

Suárez propelled Cincinnati to a 9-7 win on Saturday. With the Reds down a run and two outs in the ninth, he drove a 2-2 sinker from Gregory Soto 344 feet to right field for a three-run homer.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The tension kept building between two teams making their first appearance in a World Cup knockout match. With no goals on the scoreboard, the minutes ticked down with extra time looming.

Then Stephen Eustáquio scored in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, and Canada beat South Africa 1-0 on Sunday.

“I shot with everything I had,” Eustáquio said.

The party was on, for red-clad fans in the stands at SoFi Stadium and at watch parties across Canada, one of three World Cup hosts.

“Overall, it’s pretty much a perfect knockout performance,” right back Alistair Johnston said.

Hockey dominates Canada in the winter months. Now, summer belongs to the men's national soccer team.

The country’s previous best men's international result was winning CONCACAF Gold Cup championships in 1985 and 2000. The women's Olympic team won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

"For Canadian sports history, it’s going to be a moment where you’re going to kind of know where you were when that moment happened,” Johnston said. “That’s something that is not lost on us. We know that not only are we writing history in Canadian soccer, but in Canadian sport, and that’s a magical thing.”

Just when it looked like 30 minutes of extra time was coming, Johnston's pass to the right side was cleared to the edge of the box and found Eustáquio, who drilled a clean strike into the bottom corner.

“It’s just a moment of magic and something just comes over your body,” Johnston said. “You see Steph sprinting away and just the whole team sprinting. It’s one of those moments that you’ll never forget.”

Eustáquio became a Canadian hero in Los Angeles, where he played about 10 miles away in downtown for the MLS club LAFC. The 29-year-old midfielder was born in Canada and in his younger days played for Portugal, where his late parents were from.

Eustáquio suffered back-to-back devastating blows when his mother died from brain cancer in 2023 and his father died of a heart attack in 2024. He remains close with his brother, Mauro, a former player and a coach in the Canadian Premier League.

“I couldn’t think of a more deserving human being in a group of incredible human beings, maybe Steph is the most deserving to have a moment like that,” coach Jesse Marsch said. “So I’m really happy for him. I think from somewhere his parents are looking down and they saw that.”

In 2019, Eustáquio committed to play for the Canadian national team.

“Today, we have to enjoy the fact that we made everybody back home proud,” he said. “I am over the moon.”

In the next moment, Eustáquio was quick to come down to Earth.

“I don't want to say that the job is finished,” he said. “We have to be humble, we have to recover well and we know that in six days we’re going to have a very tough team.”

Next up, Canada plays either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4.

“We’re going to get a chance now at a true Goliath next weekend,” Johnston said, “and that’s something that we’re all extremely excited about.”

Eustáquio couldn't see the clock to know about how much time was left. Even during the hydration breaks, he wasn't sure.

“There was a little bit of frustration knowing that we didn’t score and they were probably going to score if they kept pushing,” he said, “but Jesse was just trying to remain calm, tell the team to keep pushing.”

The Canadians got a boost when their star player, Alphonso Davies, removed his substitute bib and entered in the 75th minute. He hadn't played in a World Cup match since injuring his hamstring in May with Bayern Munich in a Champions League semifinal.

Eustáquio had served as captain in Davies' absence during the group-stage matches.

“We have a special group. We feel like we are brothers,” Eustáquio said. “When we fight for each other, when we play for each other, special things like this can happen.”

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Connor Prielipp struck out a career-high 10 in six innings, Ryan Kreidler hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh and the Minnesota Twins edged the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Sunday.

Prielipp allowed two runs and six hits before being relieved by Andrew Morris (4-2), who struck out two in 1 1/3 hitless innings to earn the win. Yoendrys Gómez worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning on four pitches for his eighth save.

Kody Clemens also homered, Brooks Lee had two singles and Royce Lewis and Trevor Larnach each doubled for Minnesota, which had eight hits overall. The Twins only struck out once: Byron Buxton went down looking in the eighth inning.

The Rockies struck first on TJ Rumfield's first-inning RBI single, but the Twins answered after Lewis scored on a throwing error in the second.

Clemens gave Minnesota the lead with his 399-foot solo shot to right, getting ahold of a low inside fastball from Ryan Feltner.

Troy Johnston drove in Rumfield to tie it at 2 in the sixth. The Twins responded again in the seventh when Kreidler sent the second pitch he saw from Seth Halvorsen 421 feet to straightaway center.

Halvorsen (0-1) allowed three hits and one run in 2/3 innings.

The Twins earned their 16th come-from-behind win and improved to 7-6 in rubber games. The Rockies lost their 22nd game after leading.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Bryan Torres hit a two-run homer to back Kyle Leahy's stingy start as the St. Louis Cardinals cooled off the Miami Marlins with a 2-1 victory Sunday that snapped a four-game skid.

Masyn Winn led off the second inning with a single against Tyler Phillips (1-3) and Torres followed with his third home run for a 2-0 lead.

Leahy (6-4) didn’t allow a hit until Owen Caissie and Graham Paulie had back-to-back doubles to begin the fifth, cutting it to 2-1. Leahy allowed one run on two hits with three walks in five innings.

JoJo Romero got four outs and Ryne Stanek induced an inning-ending double play in the seventh. George Soriano struck out two in a perfect eighth and Riley O'Brien retired the side in order in the ninth for his 20th save in 24 opportunities.

Phillips set down 12 in a row following Torres' homer until JJ Wetherholt led off the sixth with a single. Iván Herrera grounded into a double play four pitches later and Alec Burleson bounced out to end the inning.

Burleson's 25-game on-base streak ended and Herrera's 22-game run was also stopped.

Phillips allowed two runs and six hits in a season-high 7 1/3 innings. He left in favor of Cade Gibson with runners at the corners, and catcher Joe Mack picked off Nathan Church at third base before Gibson struck out Wetherholt on the next pitch to end the inning.

The Cardinals (43-38) scored just three runs in the three-game series but avoided being swept by the Marlins at home for the first time in 30 years.

Miami (44-40) is 18-6 in June — best in the majors — and has won seven of its last eight series.

Up next

Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (8-4, 4.01 ERA) starts Monday's series opener in Colorado.

TYRE/BEIRUT, Lebanon, June 28 (Reuters) - A crown was blown off an ancient column in a UNESCO-listed site in Lebanon's port city of Tyre. A pilgrimage site for Muslims and Christians alike was destroyed in another southern town. Israeli strikes pummelled the Mamluk-era market in the city of Nabatieh and troops razed centuries-old Lebanese border towns.

Israel's nearly four-month air and ground campaign that it says was targeting Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah has damaged or destroyed revered heritage sites across southern Lebanon, Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salame told Reuters.

Despite a ceasefire that took hold a week ago, authorities have yet to build a full picture of the damage as Israeli troops still occupy a zone about 10 km (6.2 miles) deep into Lebanon that is off-limits to Lebanese, Salame said.

"We cannot work under the shadow of occupation," he said.

That occupation zone includes the medieval Beaufort Castle as well as centuries-old villages that were home to Christians, Shi'ite Muslims and Sunni Muslims and their places of worship.

"There are villages that have been completely bulldozed," Salame said.

Even ancient towns outside the zone were pummeled with air strikes, including Tyre and Nabatieh. Heavy bombing hit the town of Tebnin, prompting fears that its Crusader fortress was also damaged, Salame said.

"Heritage is not only Roman and Phoenician antiquities,” he added. “Heritage is also historic buildings, archaeological sites, and buildings with a cultural function."

In response to questions from Reuters, Israel's military said it does not aim to "cause excessive damage to civilian infrastructure and strikes only out of military necessity, with consideration for the safety of its citizens," a reference to residents of northern Israel, which Hezbollah has targeted.

It said it took into account the existence of "sensitive sites" and applied "a rigorous approval process as required". Israel has accused Hezbollah of placing weapons in Beaufort Castle, a claim that Lebanese authorities deny.

Modern-day Lebanon sits at the intersection of civilizations including the Phoenicians, Byzantines, Mamluks and Crusaders, each leaving their mark with temples, castles and mausoleums.

Nearly 5,000 years old, Tyre and its Roman ruins are the products of that heritage. Established as an island fortress, Tyre was permanently connected to the mainland by the invading forces of Alexander the Great.

It has survived repeated rounds of conflict. After the recent war, much of the city has been turned to rubble, and dust-caked cars with blown-out windows are parked around the collection of columns erected in honor of long-forgotten gods.

Barriers set up to shield ancient ruins from Israeli strikes or flying debris were blown into the middle of the site they were meant to protect.

"Look at the damage that happened to it, it's as if it all exploded from underneath, as if an earthquake hit it," said Adnan Istanbouli, an official from Lebanon's antiquities department, as he stood near a Roman mosaic.

Alwan Charafeddine, deputy mayor of Tyre, said "it is supposed to be one of the cities that is internationally protected, or that should never be targeted in any way, in any conflict."

In a statement last month, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said it was concerned about the state of conservation of Tyre, a World Heritage Site that is under the body's enhanced protection status.

It also said it was "deeply alarmed" by reports of damage to a citadel in the southern town of Chama and fighting by Beaufort Castle, while condemning what it described as "unlawful attacks against cultural property."

The agency had voiced similar concerns over the fate of historical sites in Iran in March.

When Israeli bombing spread to the ruins of Tyre, Salame asked UNESCO to reclassify it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Danger, which would trigger more protection responsibilities on UNESCO and the international community. It has not yet been listed as one.

Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz said earlier in the war, which ran in parallel to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, that Israel would destroy all houses along Lebanon's border with Israel.

Salame said he feared Israel's campaign would permanently erase centuries of Lebanese history.

"There is something systematic: a systematic destruction of villages, hamlets, and entire towns," Salame said.
