Real Women Have Curves debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002

The director of Real Women Have Curves is thrilled to watch American Ferrera's career continue to flourish, almost 25 years after the film first premiered.

At the 2026 New York Women in Film and Television Muse Awards in New York City on March 20, Patricia Cardoso reminisced on what it was like meeting then-teenage Ferrera over two decades ago.

"When I met her, she was 17 years old. She had never been in a movie. She was still one of the smartest people I've ever met," Cardoso, 65, tells PEOPLE, noting that Ferrera was "also so talented and so strong."

"Now to see what her career and her life have become, it's very rewarding to feel that I play a part in that trajectory and so happy to see that we have representation at that level," she adds.

Real Women Have Curves came out in January 2002, and in addition to Ferrera, the movie starred Josefina LĂłpez, Lupe Ontiveros, Ingrid Oliu, Estela Garcia and George Lopez. The comedy-drama about a first-generation Mexican-American teen at odds with her parents about her future also inspired a Broadway show of the same name.

Cardoso tells PEOPLE that the inspiration for the movie came from her mother, saying, "My mother was a very difficult mother, but she inspired me to create the movie of Real Women Have Curves that I made 25 years ago."

"It still has such a huge impact in our culture that I would say that she's my muse," Cardoso adds.

In 2024, Ferrera spoke to PEOPLE about what it was like to see the movie premiere at Sundance all those years ago.

Ferrera remembered celebrating "with a packed audience as they laughed and cried and applauded and then gave us a minutes-long standing ovation."

She told PEOPLE that moment "changed my entire world. I was getting to live out my wildest dreams. I'll never forget it."

After gaining recognition for her performance as Ana Garcia, Ferrera went on to star in Ugly Betty, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Barbie and more.

Thiele, however, tells PEOPLE that working with his best friends means that it doesn't feel like work

Owen Thiele has a lot going on. The actor and podcaster just wrapped filming the second season of Adults, is currently filming Molly Gordon's Peaked and is set to rejoin the cast of Overcompensating for season 2.

When chatting with PEOPLE, however, the 29-year-old insists that "it feels like I'm doing things that I love and it doesn't feel stressful."

"It feels really fun," he says. "It feels like I'm going from a job where I'm working with my best friends, Adults, and then I'm going to a movie with a friend I've known since I was 2, and then I'm going to another show where [Benito Skinner] is creating, and he's one of my best friends."

"I feel like I'm just hanging out with my friends, and I'm so lucky because they work so much, and so I'm lucky to see them while they work. It doesn't feel like work," Thiele adds.

Despite all of his projects' success, he says the process still feels like they're "making a short film in high school that no one will ever see."

"It ultimately does go out to the masses, but it has that spirit," he says. "It has the spirit of 'boots on the ground, let's take a camera and let's make this, and let's see what happens.' We feel supported and loved. That's what makes good art, feeling supported and loved by the people you're making it with."

Thiele also teases what fans can expect from season two of Adults, sharing that, ultimately, it's about a "friend group that has complicated feelings towards each other because of what happened last season."

"We're navigating through that. I think what the writers have done so brilliantly is they've kept the love between us all. It feels like a real friend group," he tells PEOPLE. "When the going gets tough, you still choose your friends. There's definitely some drama, which I think is a lot of fun. It's also fun for my character because Anton is truly so guarded."

What's been especially fun for the new season, he shares, is "playing with his depth and his vulnerability and showing that to people."

In addition to his work on screen, his podcast, In Your Dreams with Owen Thiele, has built a cult following thanks to his candid late-night style conversations with celebrities from Kendall Jenner to Hailey Bieber and more.

However, there are a few more superstars he'd love to welcome to the set.

"Let's get Sabrina Carpenter or Taylor Swift on my podcast. But, also, if they don't want to, I respect you both, and I love you, and I totally understand," he says.

Regardless, his dream for the year is to "keep creating things that I'm proud of."

"I feel like working with your friends... I'm so infinitely proud of my friends, and I'm so lucky to be part of their work," he emphasizes. "I would be proud of it if I weren't in it, so to be able to be involved, I feel so lucky to keep working with people that I admire and respect."

Inspired by a viral tweet about a potential crossover between Adults, Overcompensating and I Love L.A., Thiele shares, "Rachel Sennott, this is your official notice. I gotta be in I Love L.A."

Thiele was also recently tapped to curate some of his current fashion obsessions for the eBay N.Y.C. Edit. The collection he curated is "all about comfort," he says.

"But, I'm also all about looking cute. My trend for this season is no trend at all. Put on the oldest thing your grandpa owns, and it'll be cute," he shares. "Vintage sweaters, button-down shirts that probably are too big, pants that don't fit quite right, that you need a belt."

While he's leaning into dressing both cute and comfortable, there's one style trend Thiele wants to leave behind: shoulder pads.

"Unless it's actually your grandpa's blazer that you're wearing. I'm over the huge shoulder pad," Thiele says.

"Every time I go on eBay, I'm so excited because I can type in the most specific thing — quarter zip, Ralph Lauren, '90s, oversized, blue with stripes, and it's there. That's why I love it so much," he says. "You're buying things from people in places that you feel like you'll never even go, but somehow you're like, 'Why are we aligned fashion-wise? Why do we know each other in a fashion past life?' "

Over the weekend, Paul McCartney's Los Angeles concert proved to be quite the star-studded affair, drawing out a huge wave of A-list celebrity attendees.

The legendary artist and Beatles member performed at the historic Fonda Theatre on L.A.'s famed Hollywood Boulevard. The intimate concert venue, which can only accommodate up to 1,200 guests, set the stage for a rare, close-knit concert experience—made all the more exclusive by its famous guest list, which included current music power players like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Rodrigo, to name a few.

According to an Instagram post from DeuxMoi, other celebrities photographed arriving and leaving the event included Billie Eilish, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, John Mayer, Emma Watson, Tate McRae, Jason Bateman, Renee Rapp, and many more. The concert was notably a phone-free event, with no photos or videos permitted, adding to its air of exclusivity and ensuring the moment remained largely off social media—despite the high-profile audience.

Still, some glimpses of the evening emerged through DeuxMoi, including photos showing Swift and Rodrigo in conversation within a small group, as well as images of John Mayer departing the venue behind Tate McRae and influencer Jake Shane.

Additional reports from CNN noted even more legendary musicians in attendance, including Stevie Nicks and McCartney's fellow Beatles member Ringo Starr—further cementing the night as a generational crossover moment.

McCartney posted photos from the concert, aptly titled Paul McCartney Rocks the Fonda!, on Instagram. The musician captioned the post, "We came, we saw, we rocked! Thank you Los Angeles for two amazing nights!"

Alex Duong, the comedian and actor who starred on several episodes of Blue Bloods, has died. He was 42.

A close friend of Duong's family, Hilarie Steele, confirmed his death in an emotional update to the GoFundMe page started in his honor. Duong has been battling alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of tissue cancer, since being diagnosed in 2025.

On Friday, Steele announced that Duong was in the hospital after going into septic shock. The following morning, she confirmed that he died "surrounded by love and dear friends."

The statement continued, "He was comfortable and thankfully out of pain. [His wife and daughter] Christina and Everest were able to see him last night, and he was alert enough to say goodbye to his little girl, whom he has treasured every moment since the day she was born. We are devastated, but so grateful for the support, prayers, and generosity you have all shown during this unimaginable time."

Born the youngest of six children to Vietnamese and Chinese parents in Dallas, Texas, Duong relocated to Los Angeles as a young adult to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. He soon became a fixture of the city's comedy scene, as both a performer and door guy at the world-famous Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip.

In addition to taking the stage for stand-up performances, Duong made several TV appearances. He popped up in episodes of Everybody Hates Chris, Dexter, Death Valley, The Young and the Restless, Pretty Little Liars, and Filth City.

In the 2014 comedy series Cost of Living, he starred in three episodes as Genghis Khan. He similarly reappeared as criminal Sonny Le across in three episodes of Blue Bloods, teaming up with Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan. Duong also appeared as a contestant on Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle and participated in The Onlyfans Roast of Whitney Cummings.

Duong's cancer diagnosis came in early 2025. After noticing pain behind one eye, he went to see a doctor who discovered a malignant mass that eventually robbed him of vision in his left eye.

Throughout his cancer battle, Duong received support from the wider Los Angeles comedy community. Last August, several comedians came together — including the Daily Show's Ronny Chieng and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse actress and comedian Atusko Okatsuka — to put on the Alex Duong Has Cancer in His Eye Comedy Benefit Show at the Largo in Los Angeles.

Lifestyle mega-mogul Martha Stewart, 84, has never been one to beat around the bush about what she likes or doesn't like. She made many things very clear in her candid, unapologetic 2024 Netflix documentary—from how to choose the right knife to cut oranges and how she approached her early marriage to ex-husband Andrew Stewart to what she expected from boyfriends after that. Currently, Martha says she's a single woman, but she's not shy if you ask her what makes the perfect man.

Stewart recently shared her checklist for the ideal man in an interview with People. She didn't call it a checklist exactly. We're just calling it a checklist because we've been paying to attention to the queen of organization all these years. After all, Martha Stewart teaches us to have a checklist for everything—and it's a lifesaver!

The desired traits Martha Stewart says she likes in her ideal man include the following:

Looks: "Nice-looking"

Hairline: "Bald or not bald—I don't care. If they have a nice-shaped head ..."

Smile: "Nice teeth and a nice smile"

Intelligence: "Smart"

Sense of humor: "Funny"

Wealth: "Rich helps"

Plane: "Very nice"

Yacht: "I love yachts"

This is a very spectacular checklist.

It's funny. Some might guess that money and wealth wouldn't matter as much when you're a self-made, lifestyle entrepreneur and already a millionaire in your own right, but it does. I mean, what badass, self-supporting single woman in her 80s (or any age really!) is ready to start taking care of some unmotivated dude who sits around on the couch playing video games all day. Not Martha, people, definitely not Martha.

Martha Stewart is currently starring in the spring campaign for the denim brand Mother, and, in early March, she opened her second restaurant, the Bedford by Martha Stewart at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.

How does a kangaroo escape a petting zoo?

It's not the opening line to a dad joke. If you're Chesney the kangaroo, you scale an eight-foot (2 1/2 meter) fence and go on the lam for three days, giving your keeper sleepless nights and sending residents of a small Wisconsin town on a search that would end happily on Saturday.

The unprecedented leap at Sunshine Farm in Necedah, Wisconsin, last week was precipitated by some stray dogs that rushed the enclosure and spooked the 16-month-old Chesney, said his keeper, Debbie Marland. She and friends then trekked hither and yon in this town about 160 miles (255 kilometers) northwest of Milwaukee.

They chased reports of sightings and even rented heat-seeking drones, which proved effective in narrowing down the wanderings of the high-jumping adventurer.

"I was putting on about 37,000 steps per day looking for him," Marland said Sunday. "I haven't done so much exercise in a very long time."

Chesney and his roommate Kenny are named for country-music star Kenny Chesney. They're among 25 animals at Sunshine Farm, with horses, sheep, alpacas, Kunekune pigs, Highland cows and a Bactrian camel. The farm is generally open Fridays through Sundays from mid-May through mid-November and tours are offered to visitors who can interact with the animals.

Chesney escaped about 11:15 a.m. last Wednesday. Though he stayed within a three-mile (5-kilometer) radius of the farm, he kept his pursuers guessing. According to Marland's friend, Stacy Brereton, who helps out at the farm routinely, Friday was a tough day. No one had spotted Chesney all day and searchers feared he had wandered farther afield into even more unfamiliar territory, Brereton said.

Then, Friday night, Chesney was discovered nestled under a tree in a wooded area. A group of searchers surrounded him, but ever fleet of foot — 20 mph (32 kph) is no stretch for him — Chesney eluded them.

Marland returned to the area Saturday morning with Chesney's favorite treats and pieces of material that had his and Kenny's scent. Other searchers later joined her. But with no sign of the kangaroo, they started packing up. Just then, they spotted the long-eared kangaroo with outsize back legs approaching.

Brereton stepped up with a delicate touch.

"He had a very calm attitude when he walked up, obviously you could tell he wasn't in fight-or-flight mode, so I just went with that," Brereton said. "I just stayed calm with him and I just kind of went and sat and let him come to me."

Chesney heard the voices and wanted attention, said Brereton, who eventually scooped up the 40-pound (18-kilogram) animal.

"I do believe he heard our comforting voices, he smelled the familiar smells of home and it just made him feel safe," said Brereton, adding, "I'm just glad he loves me as much as I love him."

Marland said the "the community really did come together" for the kangaroo, who is now something of a celebrity. A Sunshine Farm fan has written a children's book about Chesney's adventures, which Marland hopes to publish and sell to recoup some of the search costs.

Kenny, who with his marsupial mate has the run of Marland's house, was happy to be reunited with Chesney. Though hungry and tired, Chesney was otherwise healthy but will get a checkup with the veterinarian shortly.

To be safe, Marland added, a new mesh top will be placed over the kangaroo enclosure to prevent any more high-jumping hijinks.

Gina Gershon walked away from a beloved horror franchise over an "exploitative" topless scene, the Showgirls star recently told Fox News Digital.

Gershon was offered a major role in 1981's Friday the 13th Part 2, the second installment in the cult slasher franchise, she recalled to the outlet about the Hollywood experience that taught her how to trust her gut.

"I was offered a lead in that movie," Gershon said. "And, of course, I was so excited to act in movies, but it definitely felt kind of exploitative to me and a little silly that right before she gets killed, her top has to come off."

In her upcoming memoir AlphaPussy: How I Survived the Valley and Learned to Love My Boobs, Gershon goes into detail while describing what the death scene would have entailed.

Actor John Furey in a scene from 'Friday the 13th Part 2' (1981)Credit: Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection

"At the time, those kinds of slasher movies always had girls dying with their breasts exposed," she wrote, per Fox News. "My character would be killed by a stake through the heart, blood dripping down her t---. That seemed pretty lame to me: exploitation 101."

The offer came early in Gershon's career and would have marked her onscreen debut. But while she would later prove that showing skin was not an automatic no for her, Gershon had a lot of reservations about the Friday the 13th death scene. So she turned to her dad, hoping for advice.

"I was really lucky that I had a father who really taught me how to believe in my own decisions," Gershon said. "It wasn't like I had to rebel against my family. I remember asking him about it, thinking he was going to say, 'No daughter of mine is going to do that!' And he said, 'It's your body. If you're comfortable with it, I'm comfortable with it.'"

In the end, it came down to a gut feeling.

"When I sat and thought about it, I just thought, 'I don't really want to do this. I wasn't comfortable with it. It seemed silly to me,'" Gershon shared. "Not that I had anything against nudity — I grew up on European films — but only if it makes sense for the character and the story. But when it just seems silly, I don't know. It just felt like it was something that wasn't for me."

Gershon ended up making her onscreen debut that same year, as a dancer in Beatlemania: The Movie. She continued her ascent slowly, snagging another uncredited role in Girls Just Want to Have Fun and then making an impression with a small role in 1986's Pretty in Pink. After 1988's Cocktail and 1991's Jungle Fever, Gershon had her big breakout as Cristal Connors in Paul Verhoeven's 1995 erotic cult hit Showgirls, which saw her bare skin and take part in a gruesome sexual assault scene.

Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.

At the time, Gershon offered some pushback over that particular inclusion, but recently admitted that she has changed her tune.

"It is really a comment on like ugly America, and on capitalism and power struggles and dynamics and all those things, that of course that rape scene has to be there," Gershon said during a recent radio show appearance. "It's the grossest thing in there — and the powerful men, they're all protected."
