Shia LaBeouf says he's 'scared' of gay people in post-arrest comments

Shia LaBeouf is offering a controversial explanation for his recent arrest in New Orleans.

The "Transformers" actor, 39, said during a recent interview with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan that the pair of assaults he was criminally charged with amid Mardi Gras celebrations came after he felt "scared" near members of the gay community.

"When I'm standing by myself and three gays are next to me touching my leg, I get scared … I'm sorry. If that's homophobic, then I'm that," he said. "I'll be honest with you, big gay people are scary to me."

USA TODAY has reached out to LaBeouf's representative for comment.

Shia LaBeouf ordered to rehab: Judge slams behavior after Mardi Gras arrest

The controversial actor and former child star was arrested Tuesday, Feb. 17, for multiple alleged assaults, the New Orleans Police Department confirmed to USA TODAY. According to police, officers were called at approximately 12:45 a.m. after two men reported being assaulted. Investigators said LaBeouf was "causing a disturbance and becoming increasing[ly] aggressive" at a nearby business.

The "Megalopolis" star was later taken to a hospital for "treatment of unknown injuries," police added. LaBeouf's arrest followed his alleged disorderly conduct at the business, which prompted a staff member to oust the actor from the establishment, authorities say. After he was removed, LaBeouf reportedly struck a man in the vicinity, using his closed fists several times.

He briefly left the area, per police, but returned later and began acting "even more aggressive." While several bystanders attempted to hold him down, he allegedly struck the same man a second time, also with closed fists.

While LaBeouf started the podcast by saying he took full responsibility and would face the consequences of his violence, he later seemed to imply that the assault came after he was made to feel uncomfortable near gay people.

"I'm good with gay − be gay over there, though," he said. "Don't be gay in my lap."

His comments came during a lengthy conversation in which the actor rose from his seat several times and denied having an alcohol problem, citing a Napoleon complex as the source of his troubles. The interview came after a judge ordered LaBeouf to enter treatment as well as complete weekly drug tests.

During a Feb. 27 court appearance, Orleans Parish Criminal Court Judge Simone Levine scolded the actor for apparently yelling homophobic slurs during the brawl, per the .

Levine expressed concern for the LGBTQ+ community and "the safety of this larger community, especially relative to a marginalized community that has gone through so much terror," according to AP.

This is not the star's first run-in with the law: LaBeouf has been charged with multiple instances of disorderly conduct and physical assault over the years.

*"Oh my god, I'm so stupid. I was so fooled by you. You absolute a--hole. You pinky promised! You're a piece of work. I was so convinced. You've embarrassed me."*

Suffice it to say, Maura Higgins was none too pleased in the final minutes of *The Traitors* season 4 finale after being informed by her fellow *Love Island*-er Rob Rausch that he was indeed a Traitor and had been lying to her since day 1 of the game. Maura was absolutely stunned, especially after doing Rob's bidding all season to help eliminate all his competition along the way — including his fellow Traitor, Eric Nam, so he did not have to split any of the $220,800 prize pot.

While a clearly agitated Maura instructed Rob to "don't speak, please stop talking" after he revealed his ruse, she eventually came at least a little bit around. "I mean, fair play though," she told her ally-turned-nemesis. "You know what, if I was a Traitor, I would have done the same. No hard feelings."

But what happened once the cameras turned off? What was it like once the TV turned *on* and she had to watch it all play back every painful minute-by-minute? And did she ever receive that Birkin bag from Rob? We caught up with Maura to ask all that and more.

Maura Higgins on 'The Traitors'

**: Okay, most important question first? Do you have the Birkin bag yet?**

**MAURA HIGGINS: **I don't. Seemingly, it's in the works.

**What sort of arrangements have been made? What is in the works?**

Well, so basically, you can't just walk into Hermés and buy a Birkin. So Lisa Rinna, the queen herself, is helping Rob get the Birkin because Lisa has contacts. So I told him, "Speak to Lisa." I've sent him a picture of the exact bag I want. So now it's in his hands.

**Well, hopefully it's in *your* hands soon.**

[Laughs] Hopefully it's in my hands soon. Yeah, I deserve this.

Maura Higgins on 'The Traitors'

**Clearly, it was a very emotional Fire of Truth ceremony. Tell me about the rest of the night after the cameras shut off and what that was like for you.**

I was still in complete disbelief. Even to the producers, and I had to go and do a camera interview immediately. And honestly, on my life, I don't think I've ever been speechless like that in my whole life. I even said to my mom afterwards, I was like, "Mommy, I couldn't speak." And I always have something to say, always. And I genuinely was lost for words. Yeah, complete disbelief.

**What were you more upset about? Was it that this person you put all your faith in completely duped you? Or was it the fact that it was in such a public forum and on worldwide television and you knew everybody was going to be watching it happen?**

I think I was probably more upset at myself for not copping on. But then I quickly realized: Look, there were so many more grown adults in that castle, and he had the trust of everyone. Like, who voted for him? Candiace did, but Candiace knew he was a Traitor because she was a Traitor herself.

He had the trust of everyone, and no one voted for him. So when I came to realize that, I was like, *Oh, you know what? It's not just me that trusted him. Everyone did.* Look at Eric's face at the end! Like, he turned on his own fellow Traitor, Eric, and Eric's face dropped. He was as shocked as me. Well, maybe not as shocked as me, but he was shocked.

Rob Rausch and Maura Higgins on 'The Traitors'

**I've been covering reality TV for a long time, and I'm always fascinated that you all have to go through these traumatic experiences, but then you also have to watch it play back months later. How much were you dreading having to watch the Fire of Truth ceremony back on TV?**

Also, don't forget, immediately after I filmed that, and that happened to me, I had to fly to Fiji and sit on the *Aftersun* sofa [for *Love Island*] and let on like nothing happened! How the hell did I do that? I'm still, like: How did I do that? I just was like, "Oh, whatever. It's just a game." I think for me, I genuinely went here in there knowing this is a game. It's not personal. This isn't real life. It's made up. I got over it very quickly. Like, you can see clearly on the episode, I even found it hard to watch, but you can clearly see how shocked I was. And I went through every emotion under the sun in that moment.

First of all, I was in complete disbelief. I was genuinely waiting for him to say, "Joking." I thought he was doing what I tried to do to him and trick him, and he just wasn't saying it. And I genuinely couldn't speak. I was in my brain thinking*: All right, the joke is long enough. Just tell me you're Faithful.* And then I realized: *Oh my God, he's not joking. Like, he's not actually joking*. [Laughs]

And then it kind of went to anger, and then it went to a bit of sadness. And then I came to just be like: *You know what? Fair play.* I mean, he did an amazing job. He killed it. He smashed it. And I can't be mad at that. He was a Traitor, and his job was to manipulate the Faithfuls, and he did it very, very, very well. So fair play to him.

**How do you feel about Rob telling Eric that he eliminated him due to the pinky promise that he made with you, even though that clearly was not the reason, and he just wanted all the money to himself?**

So when he said, "I made a pinky promise," genuinely in my brain, I thought: *Oh my God, I've won the show! I've won! I've won!* I was so convinced I won the show, genuinely convinced. And then, it was the moment that Eric looked at me and said, "You need to look at the one person you trust the most in this game."

And I looked over at Rob, and Rob kind of made this face like, *never mind him. *And, yeah, I was a bit nervous, but you can see I kind of have a smile on my face because I'm genuinely thinking he's gonna say "I'm a Faifthful," and we're gonna jump up and down and we're gonna celebrate, and then I can tell my mommy I won. [Laughs] It just went so different to what I had in my brain.

**Tara told me she was heartbroken for you after you eliminated her because she knew what was about to happen to you with Rob's reveal. How did it feel for you having to watch back eliminating Tara obviously knowing what you know now?**

Broke my heart. Whilst I was watching it, I was screaming, going, "Oh my God! If I could just turn back time, me and Tara could have had it!" But my alliance was Rob, and he was my familiar person in there. I know there are some people online saying, "Mara is d---matized. She's so in love with Rob." Trust me, that is not the case at all. If you watch me on *Love Island*, I'm not a subtle flirt. I'm a very obvious flirt.

It genuinely just was that we're both from the *Love Island* world. He was the only familiar face to me. I had never watched any of these people on TV before, only Rob. And I had met Rob in person, and for me, he wasn't any different in the castle to what I had met on the *Love Island: Aftersun* sofa. So I was like, "Well, surely he's not lying because he'd be different." But he just played a really good game.

**Have you warned his girlfriend yet?**

No, I just look at it as a game. There are a lot of people online being like, "You shouldn't trust the man. He manipulated you." That's what Traitors do! The show is called *Traitors!* Hello? [Laughs]

**How did you feel about going back and doing the reunion?**

I didn't have a problem with the reunion. I mean, I get on with nearly everyone on the show. I've met some amazing friends, no hard feelings with Rob at all. I'm okay. I did not cry. I walked out of that castle and went straight to another job. It's just the show. It's not for your life. I'm fine.

**Listen, they have brought people back before, and I'm sure an all-stars version will happen at some point. Would you play again if they asked you?**

Yeah, I've already had that question. [Laughs] They already looked at me and went, "*Traitors All-Stars*?" And I just went, "Me? Really? Really? After what just happened to me?" Um, no. However, they might be able to convince me. If they talk to me a lot about fashion again, then maybe I will sign up again. But I don't know. I don't think these game shows are for me.

Me as a young girl going to school in Ireland, I never got the privilege of playing games. I don't play games. And I just don't think a show like that is for me really. I was in there for the fashion. I was in there to have fun, meet friends, see how, how far I could get. And look, it's a win-win for me. I won Best Dressed. Win. It's an absolute win. And I'm getting a Birkin, hopefully. So what more could I ask for? That is a win.

**Well, if you wouldn't go back to this show, then what would you like to do next?**

What show would I like to do? Probably *Dancing With the Stars*. Because I've never danced. I did a bit of Irish dancing when I was younger, but I've never danced in my life, and it would be a challenge, but I feel like I would enjoy it. I think I'd put my all into something like that because you get to wear gorgeous costumes and get glam all the time. And I did a bit of dancing with Mark in the castle, and I had a lot of fun with it.

**Well, I have a sneaky suspicion we might see you back in the castle.**

Do you think I'd make a good Traitor?

**I do. And the people wouldn't suspect it.**

I do too. Did you see how good I lied to Eric? My mommy always said to me, "You are the worst liar." And when I watched that scene, I was like, "My God, I'm really good! I'm a really good liar!" [Laughs]

**It's unleashed the dark side in you!**

I'm telling you. I would've had so much more fun as a Traitor.

Lainey Wilson is one of USA TODAY's 2026 Women of the Year, a recognition of women who have made a significant impact in their communities and beyond. Meet all the honorees here.

When Lainey Wilson was 9 years old, she wrote a song called "Lucky Me."

She still remembers every word.

That same year, she got her first pair of bell-bottoms, her first horse and her first glimpse of the stage that would indelibly shape her future: the Grand Ole Opry.

"My mom and daddy brought me to Nashville when I was 9 years old," Wilson says on a video call from Brisbane, Australia. "I just remember going to the Opry and watching Bill Anderson, Crystal Gayle, Phil Vassar, Little Jimmy Dickens, and I just thought, 'Man, I want to be part of this community.' I felt like I kind of already was. I just needed to try to convince everybody else that I was, too."

The 33-year-old, dressed in her signature bell-bottoms and matching cowboy hat, is moments away from performing her second sold-out show at Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

Before stepping onto the stage, she gathers her band for a quick dance party, where "really weird moves" are encouraged.

The "4x4xU" singer has spent 15 years building toward this moment, becoming a global household name.

"It is crazy to think that people on the other side of the world are somehow finding their story within mine, but that truly is the power of storytelling and the power of country music," she says. "It just goes to show that we're all a little bit more linked than you think. Even on the other side of the world, we might not have grown up the same exact way, but we all want to live and laugh and love. We've all been hurt. We've been through things. It's my job to just get up there and make people feel something."

Building dreams 'brick by brick'

The singer-songwriter and her older sister, Janna, grew up in Baskin, Louisiana, population 170. Their father, Brian, farmed corn, wheat and soybeans in a stretch of northeastern Louisiana farmland. Their mother, Michelle, was a schoolteacher.

"I feel like everybody in my town is just who they are, unapologetically themselves," Wilson says. "The truth is, I didn't know there was any other way. I knew that I was signing up to tell stories and make people feel something. I sure would have hated to have been anything other than myself."

Wilson's father showed her a few chords on the guitar at 11. As a preteen, she was writing constantly, chasing melodies the way her dad chased harvests. In 2006, she uploaded an EP to Myspace titled "Country Girls Rule." In high school, she booked herself as a Hannah Montana impersonator, performing at birthday parties, fairs and festivals across Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas, even once for child cancer patients at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

With a six-string and a dream, Wilson moved to Music City in 2011. She lived in a 20-foot Flagstaff camper trailer for three years and hustled up and down Broadway to book gigs, play at hole-in-the-wall bars and cement relationships "brick by brick," she says.

"I was known as the camper trailer girl around town," she says. "And there were definitely times when I should have probably packed it back up and went back home to Louisiana, but there was this just burning fire inside of me and this faith that I was given a gift and I was supposed to share it."

She released a self-titled album in 2014, followed by "Tougher" in 2016, which cracked the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. A self-released EP in 2018 helped land her a publishing deal with Sony/ATV and a management contract that same year. Country Music Television tapped her for the "Listen Up" class of 2019 and its "Next Women of Country" tour. She toured with Morgan Wallen in 2019, and her first song to reach No. 1 was "Things A Man Oughta Know" in 2021.

Her songs found their way into the massively successful "Yellowstone" universe. She never asked to be on screen. She never auditioned for a role. Creator Taylor Sheridan wrote a role specifically for her.

1 / 0See Lainey Wilson's journey from small town girl to global star

Her 2022 breakout hit, "Things A Man Oughta Know" got Wilson a songwriting nomination at the ACM Awards that year.

"I thought, if they're calling me to be an actress, I got to do it," she says. "Showing up for 'Yellowstone,' I was pretty much playing myself with a different name."

Her ease on screen opened new doors in Hollywood. In March, Wilson will star in the movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestseller "Reminders of Him."

"After 'Yellowstone,' my next goal was to play a role where I was not a musician," Wilson says. "I wanted to completely step out of my comfort zone and try something that I had never tried. And honestly, it feels a little bit like songwriting because sometimes I am stepping into the shoes of somebody else and writing from their perspective."

Unwavering faith, endless gratitude

Now her trophy shelf is stacked: 16 Academy of Country Music Awards, 15 Country Music Association Awards and a Grammy, for best country album with "Bell Bottom Country." And that big dream she chased? She nabbed it just days after she turned 32, when she was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry.

But ask her about the hardware and accolades, and she doesn't talk about validation. She sees it as a result of her faith, both in herself and a higher power.

"I've had a lot of those moments where I'm like, 'Thank you, God,'" Wilson says. "To tell you the truth, it goes back to me finally getting to Nashville. I'm like, 'Thank you, God. I'm here. I've been preparing for the race. I've got to enter it.'"

Her favorite cell phone emoji is the running man, fitting for someone who rarely slows down. She is always running and gunning, which is probably why her newest, unreleased song is called "Can't Sit Still."

That momentum carries her from songwriting sessions to sound checks to sold-out shows and red carpets. At the Grammys, she turned heads in a black strapless top with dramatic ruffled shoulders and a plunging neckline, paired with her signature bell-bottom pants. The look flowed into a sweeping train.

"I have a lot, a lot, a lot of things to be grateful for," she says. "It's been a lot of just like, 'God, you have given me the desires in my heart.'"

In the in-between moments, she spends evenings on the porch with her fiancé, former NFL quarterback Devlin "Duck" Hodges, and her French bulldog, Hippie Mae Wilson.

Life, she says, is golden.

Women who light the way

Looking towards the future, Wilson says her one word for 2026 is "connection."

And if connection is her foundation, women are her compass. She grew up surrounded by women who carried more than their share: her mother balancing lesson plans with life, teachers who encouraged her and artists who created enough room in country music for her to gain a foothold and make way for others.

Dolly Parton and Lainey Wilson attend Dolly Parton's "Rockstar" VIP album release party with American Greetings on Nov. 16, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee.

"People in general inspire me, hearing their stories," she says. "My family inspires me. The town that I grew up in inspires me, getting to travel the world and meet people from all different walks of life. I feel like I kind of pull inspiration from a little bit of everywhere."

On tour, she sees young girls in bell-bottoms singing every lyric back to her. She meets women who tell her a song helped them through a difficult time. And she works with some of country music's most enduring icons, like Dolly Parton.

"I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award than Lainey Wilson," Parton tells USA TODAY in an email about her friend being honored as a USA TODAY Woman of the Year. "She is a prime example of talent, hard work, and a soft heart. She told me once that I have been an inspiration to her. Well, guess what Lainey? You are an inspiration to me as well. Congratulations girlfriend! I will always love you."

So what does she hope her legacy will be? "I hope people can see that I was just a girl with a big old dream from a tiny town," she says, "who didn't let anything stand in her way, who treated people right, who meant what she said, who followed through, who worked hard and loved people and wrote some damn good songs."

Wilson can still picture her childhood bedroom, the place where "Lucky Me" took shape. Maybe she'll release it one day. If she does, it won't just be a song from the past. It will be proof that the little girl who believed she belonged on stage was right all along.

Viola Davis is not ready to become an empty nester.

The G20 star, 60, chatted with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet at the 2026 Actor Awards, formerly known as the SAG Awards, where she discussed how she "can't handle" her impending status as an empty nester. Davis, who shares her daughter Genesis, 15, with husband Julius Tennon, shared that she's not ready to let go of her daughter just yet.

"No, I'm serious. I can't handle it," she said, as Tennon, 72, jokingly added, "I can. I'm good."

The actress teased that she already has plans to microchip her daughter "just so I could track her." In contrast, Tennon quipped that the teen can "call me whenever you want to call me, but bye."

"That's my baby," Davis said, shaking her head with a sad expression on her face.

The Woman King actress told the outlet that her teenage daughter is no different than any other. Davis shared that she is "surprised" when her daughter wants to spend time with her and Tennon, adding she just "rolls her eyes" at them.

"Not really. No, she's 15. No, I'm serious," she said. "I'm surprised when she does want to hang out with us. But, you know, she thinks we're funny. We can't do anything. We can't do anything with technology. She rolls her eyes."

While she may not want to hang out with her parents all the time, the teen will always show them how proud she is of them. Back in April 2025, the How to Get Away with Murder actress made an appearance on Good Morning America to promote her action film G20. While speaking with co-anchor Michael Strahan, Davis opened up about how her daughter's reaction to the film made her feel, describing it as "everything" to her.

"She was so excited. She kept saying, 'Oh my goodness. Mom, Mom, you're golden, mama. You're golden!' And she cried. She laughed," she told the former professional football player. "I loved being the hero to my teenage daughter. Because usually in these teenage years, you just disappear. They become zombies, and you become anything other than a hero."

"Her sitting there watching me like that... It just, yeah. It was everything," she added.

Christopher Meloni is giving fans some insight into his latest reunion with Mariska Hargitay.

After the duo joined forces and posed for snaps on the red carpet of the 76th Annual ACE Eddie Awards at UCLA's Royce Hall in Los Angeles, on Friday, Feb. 27, Meloni responded to fan questions about the outing — and even snapped his own selfie for a Stabler-Benson moment!

After a fan on X shared two photos of the actors posing together and sharing a hug alongside the question, "What's the story here," Meloni responded: "You know damn well what this story is."

Meloni, 64, continued to entertain fan questions on the platform over the weekend, joking that one follower was "BLOCKED" after claiming his "glam squad they did a great job with your hair."

He also shared a snap with his Law & Order: SVU costar after one fan in particular requested a "chriska selfie." Meloni held up his phone and smiled alongside Hargitay, 62, who he first joined forces with for SVU in 1999. Another selfie shared to his X account featured appearances from the likes of S. Epatha Merkerson and the long-running drama's executive producer Arthur W. Forney.

While Hargitay has been on SVU since its premiere, Meloni's Elliot Stabler departed the show in season 12, which aired in 2011. He's been back for crossovers, and Hargitay has appeared in Stabler's spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime.

The longtime friends previously had a Law & Order: Special Victims Unit reunion at the 2025 Emmys back in September of last year. At the time, the duo arrived to the 77th annual Emmy Awards together, had a reunion during the ceremony and even left the star-studded event together.

Hargitay shared a recap of the evening to her Instagram, including a snap of the pals walking hand-in-hand. They also joined forces with Ice-T, Tony Goldwyn and Merkerson for the occasion.

Back in 2021, the actors caught up with PEOPLE about their bond over the years, with Meloni sharing that their connection "happened at the screen test," as they both "walked into the screen test, me telling her a story, and we get up onstage in front of all the suits, and we're just so engaged."

"I walked in, saw him, and I went, 'That guy. That's the guy.' It went deep, very fast. We both knew that it was something big," Hargitay added. "I won't say that I fully understood it, but I knew that meeting him was important and life-changing. My father, my husband, [Law & Order creator] Dick Wolf and Chris are the four pillar men in my life. And that happened early."
