Arizona reserve guard Anthony Dell'Orso scored a career-high 22 points to lead the fourth-ranked Wildcats to a 75-68 victory over No. 23 BYU on Wednesday in a Big 12 game at Tucson, Ariz.

Dell'Orso's scoring output helped the load with Arizona's second-leading scorer Koa Peat out indefinitely with a lower-leg muscle strain.

Both sides battled injuries as Dwayne Aristode (illness) missed his second straight game for Arizona. BYU's Richie Saunders is out for the rest of the season with an ACL tear.

Arizona (24-2, 11-2 Big 12) snapped a two-game skid after winning its first 23 games, while BYU (19-7, 7-6) has lost five of its last seven games.

Dell'Orso reached 15 points in the first half on 5-of-9 shooting from the field, 3 of 5 from 3-point range, including a last-second shot from beyond the arc to give Arizona a 42-35 lead at halftime.

Robert Wright III (13 points) had a chance to cut into the lead but the ball was stripped of him in the lane by Motiejus Krivas.

Jaden Bradley tied his career high with his 10th assist following the steal, feeding Dell'Orso for a dunk with 32 seconds left to seal the victory. Bradley had a double-double adding 12 points to his assist total.

Ivan Kharchenkov finished with 18 points and Brayden Burries had 11.

AJ Dybantsa, who had 35 points, alongside Wright combined for 27 points in the first half on 9-of-20 shooting from the field.

Dybantsa scored 14 of BYU's first 18 points of the second half, including 12 consecutive points.

Arizona outscored BYU 7-2 in one stretch to take a 53-43 lead with 13:39 left with the last four points by reserve forward Sidi Gueye on an alley-oop pass from Bradley and score off an offensive rebound.

The Wildcats' lead increased to 69-53 with 5:25 left on a Burries 3-pointer.

BYU went on an 8-0 run, with five points from Kennard Davis Jr., to cut the lead to 69-61 with 3:19 left.

Arizona responded with two free throws by Bradley and a steal and dunk by Kharchenkov that increased the lead to 73-61 with 2:37 left.

Dybantsa made a 3-pointer to help an 8-0 run that cut the lead to 73-68.

Bryce Hopkins had 23 points and 10 rebounds and Oziyah Sellers added 12 points as 17th-ranked St. John's held off Marquette 76-70 in a Big East matchup Wednesday in Milwaukee, extending its winning streak to 12 games.

St. John's (21-5, 14-1 Big East) moved atop the conference, a half-game in front of No. 5 UConn, which was upset by Creighton 91-84 on Wednesday. The Red Storm have not lost since a 77-71 setback against Providence on Jan. 3.

Nigel James Jr. scored 25 points and Royce Parham put up 13 for Marquette (9-18, 4-12 Big East), which has lost four of its past five games.

Joson Sanon's 3-pointer put St. John's up 67-61 with 6:37 remaining, but neither team scored again until Zuby Ejiofor hit a free throw with 4:10 left to make it 68-61.

Sanon's free throw put St. John's up 71-63 with just under three minutes left. Adrian Stevens hit a 3-pointer and Tre Norman sank the second of two free throws to pull Marquette within 71-67 with 44 seconds remaining.

James converted a three-point play to make it 72-70 with 27.5 seconds left. Ejiofor's two free throws pushed the lead to 74-70 with 21.1 seconds remaining.

Marquette's Chase Ross missed a baseline runner and Hopkins added a pair of free throws.

Marquette erased a nine-point halftime deficit with an 11-point run to open the second half. Ross' 3-pointer from the top put the Golden Eagles in front 46-44 as St. John's missed its first five shots after the break.

James scored on consecutive drives to put Marquette in front 56-50 with just under 12 minutes remaining.

St. John's responded with a nine-point run, going in front 59-56 on Hopkins' 3-pointer.

St. John's closed the first half with a 10-4 run for a 44-35 halftime lead. The Red Storm shot 54.8% in the first half, hitting seven of their final eight shots.

For the game, the Red Storm outshot the Golden Eagles 44.8% to 42.6%.

Andrej Stojakovic's 22 points led seven double-figure point scorers for No. 10 Illinois in a 101-65 pounding of short-handed Southern California on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Doubt loomed over the availability of Stojakovic going into this week's California road trip for Illinois (22-5, 13-3 Big Ten). The wing, who hadn't played since sustaining an ankle injury on Feb. 7 against Michigan State, answered all questions with a 6-of-7 shooting performance from the floor coming off the bench on Wednesday, and a perfect 9-of-9 at the free-throw line.

Stojakovic helped fuel an offensive onslaught that began early, with Illinois running out to a 15-3 lead 5:33 into the contest and never looking back.

The Illini shot 32 of 62 (51.6%) from the floor, including 13 of 29 (44.8%) on 3-point attempts, led by Jake Davis' perfect 4-of-4 success from beyond the arc. Davis scored all 12 of his points from long distance.

Davis also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Six different Illinois shooters connected on at least one 3-pointer. Ben Humrichous knocked down 3 of 6 from deep on his way to 11 points off the bench, while David Mirkovic and Tomislav Ivisic each made a pair of triples en route to 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Keaton Wagler added 10 points and Kylan Boswell finished with 12 points, five rebounds and eight assists to round out Illinois' collection of double-figure scorers. The balanced attack powered Illinois to its highest scoring output in Big Ten play this season and helped the Illini maintain sole possession of second place in a tight conference competition.

USC (18-8, 7-8), meanwhile, found itself in a tough spot before opening tip. Season-long leading scorer Chad Baker-Mazara was a late scratch from the lineup, and his backcourt mates -- Alijah Arenas and Kam Woods -- shot a combined 4 of 14 from the floor for eight and four points, respectively.

Arenas came into Wednesday's contest with three straight games posting at least 24 points.

Ezra Ausar recorded a double-double for the Trojans with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Jacob Cofie added 14 points, but the two combined for almost as many made field goals (11) as the rest of USC's roster combined (12).

TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) — After days of increasingly brutal conditions in California's Sierra Nevada, a group of 15 backcountry skiers set out for home. But as they left remote huts at thousands of feet of elevation and trekked back toward the trailhead, they were slammed by a treacherous avalanche that left eight dead and one missing.

With avalanche warnings in effect through early Thursday, officials were still waiting for the powerful storm to clear so they could recover the bodies of the victims of Tuesday's avalanche, the nation's deadliest in nearly half a century. Officials have not yet released the names.

The ski group involved has deep ties to the alpine recreation community in Lake Tahoe, including the elite Sugar Bowl Academy, which issued a statement late Wednesday mourning the loss of victims with "strong connections to Sugar Bowl, Donner Summit and the backcountry community."

It did not say how the skiers, said to range in age from 30 to 55, were connected to the school, which offers alpine and backcountry ski instruction and academics for young athletes.

"We are an incredibly close and connected community," Sugar Bowl Academy executive director Stephen McMahon was quoted as saying in the statement. "This tragedy has affected each and every one of us."

Four in the group were guides from Blackbird Mountain Guides, which offers mountaineering and backcountry ski trips as well as safety courses across the West and internationally. One of them was among the six survivors.

The three-day tour, which began Sunday, was for intermediate to expert skiers, according to the company's website.

The tour company said in a statement Wednesday night that it has launched an investigation and paused field operations at least through the weekend while it prioritizes supporting the victims' families.

The company guides who led the group were trained or certified in backcountry skiing and were also instructors with the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education.

While in the field, they "are in communication with senior guides at our base, to discuss conditions and routing based upon conditions," founder Zeb Blais said in the statement.

"We don't have all the answers yet, and it may be some time before we do," the company said. "In the meantime, please keep those impacted in your hearts."

Mayor Max Perrey of Marin County's Mill Valley, a small city about 14 miles (22 kilometers) north of San Francisco, confirmed that some in the group were women from his city. He was not able to provide additional details but told The via email that more information would be released later.

The Sierra Avalanche Center issued an avalanche watch Sunday morning, and that was elevated to a warning by 5 a.m. Tuesday, indicating that avalanches were expected. It is not clear whether the guides would have known about the change before they began their return trek.

Authorities described a harrowing scene as the survivors scoured the snow for the missing and waited six hours for help to arrive in blizzard conditions. They found three of the bodies, Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon said.

The skiers all had beacons that can send signals to rescuers, and at least one guide was able to send text messages. But it was not clear whether they were wearing avalanche bags, which are inflatable devices that can keep skiers near the surface, sheriff's Capt. Russell "Rusty" Greene said.

One of those rescued remained hospitalized Wednesday, Moon said.

Three to 6 feet (91 centimeters to 1.8 meters) of snow has fallen in the area since Sunday. The area was also hit by subfreezing temperatures and gale force winds.

The avalanche is the deadliest in the U.S. since 1981, when 11 climbers were killed on Mount Rainier in Washington state, and the second deadly avalanche near Castle Peak this year, after a snowmobiler was buried January. Each winter the slides kill 25 to 30 in the country, according to the National Avalanche Center.

The area near Donner Summit, where the ski trip took place, is one of the snowiest places in the Western Hemisphere and until just a few years ago was closed to the public. The summit is named for the infamous Donner Party, a group of pioneers who resorted to cannibalism after getting trapped there in the winter of 1846-1847.

Podcaster Joe Rogan and Hollywood actor Michael Jai White said on Wednesday that modern America's refusal to let young men compete and lose is part of what's fueling the modern masculinity crisis.

Rogan and White spoke about how places like Australia and New Zealand have been great sources of action movie stars and competitive fighters in recent years. White argues that one thing that benefits that part of the world, particularly certain warrior cultures, there is that they still have rites of passage for young men.

"That's one thing that is sad about the United States. It's like we're not making men anymore," White said.

"Not a lot of them," Rogan agreed. "When they are, they stand out."

White went on to argue that many times now in American movies, when there is an American alpha-male type character, he, ironically, is often played by an Australian, a comment that made Rogan laugh. "It's very rarely an American."

"Well, masculinity is demonized here," Rogan said. "For some strange reason over the last couple of decades."

"Bro, I saw the beginning of a lot of it, because you know, like I said, I was a schoolteacher, and I was right on the forefront seeing, like, 'everybody gets a trophy,'" White recalled.

He railed against the idea of doing everything one can to protect kids' self-esteem, arguing in response, "I'm like, come on. And, you know, taking away competition. I saw the beginning of that s---, and it's just so, so bad. Then these kids don't know how to deal with loss or anything and then they end up shooting a classroom!"

"Dealing with loss is one of the most important lessons you could ever learn," Rogan said. "If you want to get better, lose. Losing is the best medicine because you lose, 'I don't ever want to feel that again.' And then you start thinking about all the things that you cut corners on, all the things that you didn't do. 'What can I do differently to make sure that that never happens again that I never feel that feeling?' Or you quit."

"Those are the two options," Rogan said, underlying his point. "Either you get way better or you quit."
