Podcaster Joe Rogan and Hollywood actor Michael Jai White said on Wednesday that modern America's refusal to let young men compete and lose is part of what's fueling the modern masculinity crisis.

Rogan and White spoke about how places like Australia and New Zealand have been great sources of action movie stars and competitive fighters in recent years. White argues that one thing that benefits that part of the world, particularly certain warrior cultures, there is that they still have rites of passage for young men.

"That's one thing that is sad about the United States. It's like we're not making men anymore," White said.

"Not a lot of them," Rogan agreed. "When they are, they stand out."

White went on to argue that many times now in American movies, when there is an American alpha-male type character, he, ironically, is often played by an Australian, a comment that made Rogan laugh. "It's very rarely an American."

"Well, masculinity is demonized here," Rogan said. "For some strange reason over the last couple of decades."

"Bro, I saw the beginning of a lot of it, because you know, like I said, I was a schoolteacher, and I was right on the forefront seeing, like, 'everybody gets a trophy,'" White recalled.

He railed against the idea of doing everything one can to protect kids' self-esteem, arguing in response, "I'm like, come on. And, you know, taking away competition. I saw the beginning of that s---, and it's just so, so bad. Then these kids don't know how to deal with loss or anything and then they end up shooting a classroom!"

"Dealing with loss is one of the most important lessons you could ever learn," Rogan said. "If you want to get better, lose. Losing is the best medicine because you lose, 'I don't ever want to feel that again.' And then you start thinking about all the things that you cut corners on, all the things that you didn't do. 'What can I do differently to make sure that that never happens again that I never feel that feeling?' Or you quit."

"Those are the two options," Rogan said, underlying his point. "Either you get way better or you quit."

It's the end of an era for the beloved Dutch rock band Golden Earring after the group completed five sold-out performances in their home country of the Netherlands at the end of January 2026.

The beloved band officially called it quits with an emotional goodbye, made even more significant due to the fact that the band's vocalist-guitarist, George Kooymans, died of ALS in July 2025.

Fans, friends, colleagues and more came out to the monumental final concerts, with the media production company FabriQ Media Group documenting the historic moment. Sharing some photos from the concerts, the company wrote, "Tonight marks the end of an era. After five sold-out shows of Golden Earring - One Last Night at Rotterdam Ahoy, it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to the greatest Dutch rock band of all time."

"We are honored to have been part of this legendary farewell and proud to have captured the emotional rollercoaster with a 17-camera setup for the band and for future generations!" the message concluded.

The stunning photos showed off the huge venue that was filled to the brim with excited fans. Golden Earring performed at Rotterdam Ahoy, which can fit approximately 16,500 visitors and has hosted plenty of other major musical groups in the past, including Pink Floyd and Queen.

The band said goodbye to performing after over 60 years of great music and shows, with Golden Earring's biggest hits including "Radar Love" and "Twilight Zone." Along with the late Kooymans, the band consisted of Barry Hay, Rinus Gerritsen, and Cesar Zuiderwijk.

Golden Earring originally announced their disbandment in 2021 as Kooymans' ALS progressed. The group shared the news with the Dutch newspaper AD, with Kooymans saying, translated from Dutch, "I am indeed ill, I have ALS. It's very bad news, and I'm not really in the mood to say much more about it... It's a progressive disease. Unfortunately, performing is no longer possible."

When asked if the band would go on with a new member in Kooymans place, Hay and Zuiderwijk said, "That's never going to happen." The latter went on, "We're a group of four friends who are irreplaceable. A new band member? That wouldn't be right."

Golden Earring made an exception with their final five shows, as the farewell performances were actually Kooymans' idea before he died.

Hey, you guys! *The Goonies* stars Ke Huy Quan and Jeff Cohen have reunited.

More than 40 years after their swashbuckling adventure, the actors both appeared on the red carpet for Michelle Yeoh's Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Quan portrayed creative inventor Data, while Cohen played the "Truffle Shuffle"-ing Chunk in the family film about a group of kids who find a treasure map that leads them to discover the pirate ship once belonging to the storied One-Eyed Willy and his crew. The 1985 Richard Donner-directed film, written by Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus, has become a classic.

In addition to Quan and Cohen, the movie costarred Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Kerri Green and made famous the catchy Cyndi Lauper song "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough."

Quan memorably appeared in Yeoh's 2022 movie *Everything Everywhere All at Once*, for which he received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He thanked Cohen in his speech, because the actor-turned-lawyer had negotiated his contract for the film.

"When the producer of our movie was trying to make my deal," Quan recalled to *The Hollywood Reporter*, via the magazine, "he said he never imagined that he'd have to talk to Chunk and Data for his movie."

Much of the cast reunited in February 2025, when Quan himself was honored with a hand-and-footprint ceremony at the nearby TCL Chinese Theater.

At the time, Brolin said Quan had "that Midas touch" and "that heart of gold that you've always had, as far back as 40 years it's been."

Brolin recalled that, when they met, he was 16, and Quan was 13.

"I could not be happier for you," Brolin said. "I know we all are, all us Goonies, here for an honor that is not only totally deserved, but celebrates all that is right in this industry. Love you, pal."

Quan said then that he was more than willing to "go on another Goonies adventure with my fellow Goonies. That would be amazing!"**

Brolin explained in August that he's cautiously in favor of a sequel if they can find the right idea.

"I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great," Brolin told *Entertainment Tonight*. "The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It's just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don't want to taint what my memory of it [is]."**

- The 2026 Oscar nominations changed the state of the race. Now, see EW's winner predictions.

- Timothée Chalamet, *Sinners*, *One Battle After Another*, *KPop Demon Hunters*, and more are top contenders.

- Conan O'Brien returns as 98th Academy Awards host on March 15.

After decades of ignoring horror films at large, the 2026 Oscars have rewritten the sins of Academy Awards history by anointing Ryan Coogler's *Sinners* as the most-nominated movie of all time. But will the feat be enough to push it into the Oscars' winners' circle over *One Battle After Another*?

At the end of 2025, things seemed buttoned up for Paul Thomas Anderson's thriller *One Battle After Another* to steamroll the season. While that's still a realistic scenario, cross-branch support at the Oscars (to the tune of a landmark 16 overall nominations) indicates collective passion *might've* shifted toward *Sinners* in recent weeks.

Tying the prior record for most nods by one film (14) is an impressive feat, as *La La Land* managed to do for the first time since 1997's *Titanic* back in 2017. But *Sinners* not only met the challenge, it surpassed the benchmark by two, meaning every eligible branch that could vote for the movie, did.

Oscar nominations morning is *not* the time for any contender to lose momentum, whether it's real interest among voters or even falling a few places back in the Oscars publicity machine. *One Battle* has, effectively, dominated the conversation for months; after attention shifted back to *Sinners* following its monumental box-office run, it seemed that enthusiasm could jump ship from Anderson's latest as Coogler's genre masterwork rises in its place.

However, *One Battle After Another *surged back at the Directors Guild of America Awards, where Anderson scored the ceremony's top prize over Coogler, clearing a path for the *Magnolia* director's Oscar victory as well.

Despite a narrative fueling *Sinners'* resurgence (with Coogler helming a predominantly Black cast en route to just under $370 million at the global box office, all for an original story with no foundational source material), the film isn't without its critics. Many have found it to be overly long and perhaps too experimental for some commercial tastes, while *One Battle* is a "safer" and more traditional option. But money talks, and *Sinners*' audience appeal is something Hollywood desperately needs right now, amid the age of what many consider to be a bleak era of sequel-soaked, IP-driven slop.

2026 Oscar nominees: Jacob Elordi, Timothée Chalamet, and more

2026 Oscar nominees: Jacob Elordi, Timothée Chalamet, and more.

While we're shifting back to *One Battle *for Best Picture, *Sinners* will generate even more traction at SAG's 2026 Actor Awards on March 1, where the film will likely earn the top competitive honor for its ensemble. There, the film also earned five individual nods from the largest Hollywood union — a group that shares huge crossover membership with the Academy.

On paper, though, *One Battle *still* *managed to outdo *Sinners* at the Actor Awards, earning at least one nomination in every Actor Award category (including for its stunt ensemble) — and two for Supporting Actor contenders Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn.

That push and pull could point to another Best Picture/Best Director split ahead, with *One Battle*'s tight direction finally scoring Anderson his first victory in the category, while stronger overall cross-branch support for *Sinners* (and what the film represents) resulting in enough passionate, top-ballot placements for the film to squeeze it into the winner's circle for Best Picture.

At the Oscars, the acting winners still feel safe and secure. Timothée Chalamet's performance in *Marty Supreme* cleaned up at most precursor awards ceremonies (including the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards), as has Jessie Buckley's leading turn in *Hamnet*. *One Battle*'s Teyana Taylor is also in a safe spot, with her track record showing resilience in the later stages of the race.

Oscars

While the film only scored one nomination, Rose Byrne's work in *If I Had Legs I'd Kick You *did triumph at the Indie Spirits ahead of final Oscar voting, and it's always good to get more eyeballs (and publicity) for a given performance at this vital stage.

Supporting Actor also feels less assured. Yes, Stellan Skarsgård triumphed at the Globes (and the all-important European Film Awards showered *Sentimental Value* with love at its annual ceremony), but Jacob Elordi's work in *Frankenstein* is the most physically transformative turn in the bunch. If he wins with SAG voters (as the populist group often heralds more commercially friendly, starrier performances), expect the *Euphoria* star to repeat at the Oscars.
