“She’s Gone and She Knows It”: Fever Nation Erupts as Sophie Cunningham’s Comments on Front-Office Shake-Up Fuel Free Agency Rumors

The guard, who rose to unprecedented stardom during her Fever tenure, is an unrestricted free agent, and many believe she may have subtly hinted her decision while reacting to the organization's latest front-office changes.

On Friday, the Fever announced multiple major changes to their front office. First, longtime president of basketball and business operations Kelly Krauskopf stepped down. However, the biggest domino fell later in the day when the team also relieved general manager Amber Cox of her duties.

Cunningham, who was one of Cox's signature additions when she joined the Fever in 2025, chimed in on the decisions while attending the F1 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.

"There was not a lot of warning, and that's OK," Cunningham said. "I think that's probably a good thing that you kind of keep it in-house a little bit. But you know what? Kelly and Amber, they're phenomenal, phenomenal people."

"They cared a lot about us as players and as individuals outside the court, and so I have nothing but great things to say about them. Hopefully, the Fever come in and bring people who can do a really good job for that program. And so I was blessed to be under Kelly and Amber, and I wish them the very best, and so we'll see what happens."

As soon as the clip went viral, Fever fans began trying to decipher Cunningham's comments, with many expressing concern about what they could mean for her future in Indiana. Some interpreted her reference to the Fever as "the program" as a possible sign that she could be on her way out. Here's a look at some of the reactions.

"She's gone and she knows it," a fan said.

Cunningham's role gradually declined this season, as she started just three of the 43 games she played, marking a career low for her in the league. As a result, there is a strong possibility she could test the free-agent market. That could make her an appealing option for teams looking for an experienced guard who can contribute on both ends of the floor. She averaged 7.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game during the 2026 season.

While Sophie Cunningham still has plenty of good basketball left in her, finding her next home in free agency might be easier said than done. One podcaster believes signing the guard comes with a massive PR risk, arguing that teams may hesitate to take on the surrounding off-court baggage and controversy.

On the Sept. 18 episode of the "Let Her Shoot" podcast, Daily W co-founder Sarah Chovnick joined host Trysta Krick to discuss Cunningham's future. Chovnick didn't hold back when explaining why she doesn't expect the Indiana Fever to bring back the veteran guard.

"Sophie has to see the writing on the wall," Chovnick said. "No other team is picking her up. No other team in the WNBA is taking that PR risk and bringing that group of people into their fanbase. The Indiana Fever… I don't think they're going to keep her. I really don't."

Cunningham has never been one to shy away from speaking her mind. While she may not put up big numbers, she brings defensive tenacity, experience and savvy play that can make an opponent difficult to face. Additionally, her outspoken personality and unfiltered comments have earned her a loyal fan base, giving teams another reason to consider bringing her aboard, though signing her could also come with PR risks and unwanted attention. That said, nothing has been decided yet. Whether the Fever choose to re-sign her in free agency or she looks for a fresh start elsewhere remains to be seen.
