Alexander Skarsgård Wears YSL's Controversial Transparent Shoes to 'Wicker' Screening

Dave Benett/Dave Benett Collection/Getty Images The phrase “Alexander Skarsgård shoe size” has likely been Googled countless times before. This time, however, the search was made in the name of journalism. Skarsgård left little choice: He arrived at a screening of his upcoming film Wicker at the 70th BFI London Film Festival with his big Swedish fötter laced up in a pair of transparent shoes.

You might not have even noticed them at first, considering the golden suit he wore them with was notable on its own. Worn without a shirt, the suit recalled Elvis’s famous golden suits , or, perhaps, something out of Patti LaBelle’s closet. His shoes, however, are undoubtedly destined to be the talking point.

Fashion fans are already quite acquainted with the pair of see-through shoes. Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello set off quite the stir when he posted a pair of the transparent vinyl oxfords on Instagram to tease the brand’s spring 2027 runway show. The shoes, of course, were seen frequently on the runway, but hadn’t hit the red carpet until now.

It’s maybe not much of a surprise that Skarsgård would be the one to wear them. He’s made it something of a mission to wear some of the most controversy-baiting menswear runway pieces to his premieres. He’s worn the sparkly purple Dior going-out top , a halter top by Ludovic de Saint Sernin, a butt plug-print chemise , and, of course, Saint Laurent’s thigh-high boots .

“I think it’s just a lack of sense of style, but at least I'm having fun,” Skarsgård told W last year about his boundary-pushing fashion sense. “Whatever you wear, it's about how you feel. Are you excited to wear it? Does it make you happy? I was very happy in all those outfits. You want to wear something that makes you radiate happiness and excitement.”

At the time, he was promoting his BDSM-themed romance film Pillion , which explained his kinkier red carpet moments. Wicker lacks leather, but is perhaps even weirder. Skarsgård plays a man made out of wicker who comes to life to fulfill the romantic fantasies of the lonely women who wove him.

Oh, and as for his shoe size? The notorious website WikiFeet claims he wears a 13 men's in American sizes. WikiFeet, however, holds itself to neither traditional journalistic nor academic fact checking standards, so take that information with a grain of salt. Of course, the actor has made it incredibly easy to make an eyeball estimate of your own.

‘Celeste’ Creator Diego San José, Director Elena Trapé on Turning a Tax Inspector Into ‘Dirty Harry’

The Movistar Plus and 100 Balas comedy rewinds Sara Santano’s story, trading pop stardom for soccer and reopening old wounds

After turning Spain's tax agency into the unlikely engine of a noir-tinged comedy, " Celeste " creator Diego San José and director Elena Trapé are taking aim at something far more sacred in Spain: soccer.

The six-part second season of the Movistar Plus original brings Carmen Machi ("La Mesías") back as Sara Santano, the tax inspector who spent Season 1 trying to prove that a globe-trotting Latin music star owed €20 million ($22.4 million) in Spain. This time round, the series rewinds to an earlier point in Sara's career and revisits Figueroa, the Argentine soccer star whose earlier tax case marked the only professional failure of Sara's otherwise distinguished career. The social equation flips with him. Sara embodies one of Spain's least-loved public figures; Figueroa is a soccer idol whose failings can be forgiven as long as he delivers on the pitch. Popular on Variety

Imagina Sales ( The Mediapro Studio Distribution) is handling international sales on Season 2 and will bring the series to Mipcom ahead of its Oct. 26 world premiere at Barcelona's Serielizados Fest.

Season 1 won Spain's Ondas and Feroz awards for best comedy, while Series Mania's International Panorama awarded it best series and best actress for Machi last year. It also launched on Arte in France and Flow in Argentina.

Produced by Movistar Plus and 100 Balas, and The Mediapro Studio company, the new season is again directed by Trapé, with San José writing alongside Oriol Puig and Fernando Delgado-Hierro.

San José and Trapé spoke to Variety ahead of Mipcom about the new season.

Why make Season 2 a prequel and return to the Figueroa case?

San José: It really has nothing to do with the person she is pursuing. The decision to go back in time had to do with Sara Santano herself. The Sara we leave at the end of the first season is a woman whose wounds have healed. For a writer, that's not the most interesting version of her. We wanted a character with wounds and cracks.

So we went back to Figueroa as an excuse to go back to Sara. The case is really a pretext. The advantage of Figueroa isn't Figueroa. It's that her husband is alive. That allows us to tell a completely different personal story.

If the first season is about solitude, the second is about the end of love — what happens when two people sleep separately, still care for one another, but are no longer in love.

When you were making Season 1, had you already planted the Figueroa case with a second season in mind?

San José: No. Everything to do with making a second season came after the first was already finished. So at the writing stage we had to approach it almost as an exercise in architecture, or juggling. The first challenge was to make a good season even for somebody who hasn't seen the first one, so the story works simply as a story.

Then we set ourselves another challenge: making sure everything fits and resonates. If somebody watches both seasons and takes out a magnifying glass looking for something that doesn't fit, they shouldn't find it. We also wanted Season 2 to help explain things from the first that were already there.

Sara is exemplary, but she also breaks her own rules. What interests you about pushing her across those lines?

San José: Stories become interesting when characters do things they don't normally do. Sara is an exemplary inspector, but we put her in circumstances where she breaks her own rules.

She is as obsessive and methodical as an FBI agent looking for a serial killer in Manhattan. We've taken the classic codes of film noir and moved them somewhere gray and everyday like the tax office. It's about giving a tax office the adrenaline and muscle of the Pentagon. That collision between the ordinary and something as explosive as Dirty Harry is part of the DNA of the series.

Even when the characters make questionable choices, the series seems more interested in understanding than judging them. Was that important to you?

San José: Above all, we've tried to understand them. I don't think any of the characters in either season is bad.

Even the alleged tax evaders have understandable interests. The ways they defend them may be wrong, but we've tried not to make anyone stupid.

All the characters in "Celeste," on both sides of the investigation, are emotionally broken. I don't think you can hate somebody who isn't happy when they go to bed. If things aren't going well for you, I think an embrace comes more naturally than an elbow.

Elena, how do you convey that emotional vulnerability without tipping into melodrama?

Trapé: If by sentimental you mean melodramatic, the tone and the way the characters' feelings emerge are so subtle, delicate and restrained that it's very difficult for that to happen. That is already very clearly established in Diego's writing.

It's also fundamental that Diego is with me on set every day. Any doubt, any ambiguity, any moment when you ask, "Do we push this further or are we already there?" becomes part of our creative dialogue.

The series has a particular affinity for losers. What draws you to them?

San José: We all have a losing side, and not everybody has a winning side. What equalizes all of us is that we all know what it is to lose. Defeat is what makes us connect.

Both seasons have a special sympathy for losers. We made a heroine out of someone who is clearly looked down on in real life. Tax inspectors are badly regarded in our society.

The fact that a 62-year-old woman who is a tax inspector can at the same time be Dirty Harry is already a bet on turning the loser into somebody who gets a spotlight in fiction that she doesn't get in real life. The series is made to weave a nice suit for losers who don't usually get one.

The singer Celeste is no longer central to the story. Why keep the title?

San José: We never attached much importance to the title containing the name of the most important character. "Celeste" for us has become almost more of a color than a figure from music.

People even sometimes refer to Carmen Machi as Celeste: "Have you seen that series about the inspector, 'Celeste'?"

The first season connected with more people than even we expected, so we wanted to keep the same brand.

Elena, after the response to Season 1, what did you want to achieve with the second season?

Trapé: There's a solidity to this season that I really like. As the characters gain more volume and nuance, and the plot develops, you enter a universe that keeps expanding. It becomes something more mature.

One challenge of the first season was establishing its very particular tone. This time we, the crew and Carmen already knew it. That gave us much more room to play.

Watching it now, I feel we've grown. It feels like a very solid season.

You've now made "Celeste" and " Yakarta " together, with Javier Cámara earning an International Emmy nomination last month for the latter. Could there be a "Yakarta 2"?

San José: My plan, as a viewer, is for Elena to make something without me, because I'd like to see it. The downside of working with Elena for three or four years is that I don't get to watch things by Elena.

We've made two series together, three seasons in total, and I'm extremely happy with them. But now it's Elena's turn to do her own thing.

If Elena wants to make "Yakarta 2," it will happen. That depends on Elena.

Trapé: What I hope neither of us rules out is working together again. Whether it will be "Yakarta 2" or something else, I don't know.

San José: I think if Javier Cámara wins the International Emmy, it's going to be difficult to sit down to dinner without somebody saying, "Why don't you make a 'Yakarta 2'?" So let's make Javier responsible for that.

Connor Wood Claps Back at Criticism About His Steamy ‘DWTS’ Rumba With Rylee Arnold

Eric McCandless // ABC Key Points Connor Wood and Rylee Arnold’s steamy rumba to Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body” on Dancing With the Stars went so viral that it became the cover image for Spotify’s “Yearning” playlist. The podcaster’s chemistry with his dance partner sparked feral fan reactions and even drew supportive comments from celebrity competitors. Despite scoring 19/30 and facing some criticism, Connor defended his performance and proved himself the season’s underdog, with fans claiming he was “criminally under-scored.” If you’ve had Mariah Carey’s “Touch My Body” on repeat since Connor Wood and Rylee Arnold crushed their rumba to the song on Tuesday night’s episode of Dancing With the Stars , you’re not alone. The steamy performance has truly put fans in a chokehold—so much so, it even became the cover image for Spotify’s official “Yearning” playlist .

Naturally, the internet hasn’t been able to hold back feral reactions to his and Rylee’s chemistry on the dance floor, either.

“Just bought Lavender Silk bed sheets so I can feel closer to Connor,” one person wrote, referring to the pair’s coordinating costumes. Another commended his improved dancing, writing, “Connor is gonna be the life of every wedding reception he goes to by the time this show is over.”

Of course, a sea of support comes with some waves of criticism. When another commenter claimed, “y’all need to be serious and admit he is not a good dancer,” Connor stepped in to defend himself.

“Almost like this is a show where people learn how to dance,” he replied.

Fans on Reddit supported Connor’s decision to respond, with one saying, “He’s been very open on his podcast that this is a dancing show and it’s not that serious, they should be having fun. I’m glad he’s not taking shit.”

They continued, “He’s also an anxious person and his own worst critic, he KNOWS he’s not a good dancer and he’s still showing up every week and trying anyways. As a fellow anxious person I think he’s hella brave and I’m proud of him.”

So far, the podcaster has proven to be this season’s underdog. Though he scored 19/30 for the performance, fans in the comments claimed he was “criminally under-scored.”

For what it’s worth, Connor’s celeb competitors also uplifted him with sweet comments. Harry Shum Jr. couldn’t contain his shock, writing, “Them body rolls!!!! 😮,” while Olympian Amber Glenn said, “Leading man!!!🙌”

Bachelor Nation alum Rachael Kirkconnell even chimed in, writing, “is it hot in here …… 😩😩😩🔥🔥🔥🔥.”

Thankfully, Papa Connor is still in the competition, and I, for one, am totally charmed. Can’t wait to see what he brings during Super Bowl Night next week!

Celine Dion’s Paris Fashion Streak Is One for the Books: See Every Look

Courtesy of Dior Celine Dion’s Paris residency is officially underway, and to celebrate her triumphant return to the stage, the Canadian singer has turned the French capital into her runway, both onstage and off.

Dion’s five-week residency marks her first full run of concert performances since being diagnosed with the rare autoimmune disorder stiff-person syndrome in 2022. From September 12 through October 17, the 58-year-old star is performing for 45,000 fans each show at Plenitude Arena, the largest indoor venue in Europe. Naturally, she has been living up to her fashion-legend status .

On stage, Dion has worn custom confections from houses spanning Schiaparelli, Givenchy, and Tom Ford. Her ensembles have been decidedly modern and ornately embellished, with exaggerated proportions capturing her singular stage presence. On September 16, she wore a Louis Vuitton look designed for her by Nicolas Ghesquière—which took over 170 hours to create—featuring exaggerated shoulders and a graceful side train. Another elaborate outfit, worn during the opening September 12 show of the tour, featured a molded leather breastplate custom-made by Alaïa.

Her sidewalk outings have been makeshift runway moments in their own right, with her reliably walking out her hotel door at Le Royal Monceau clad in head-to-toe designer, waving and dancing as adoring fans cheer on. Some looks have felt distinctly avant-garde, such as her fresh-off-the-runway Loewe leather LBD. Others have playfully referenced her boundary-breaking sartorial legacy, like the backward Givenchy leather jacket that paid homage to her turned-around white suit at the 1999 Academy Awards.

Below, W tracks the star’s best looks during her Paris concert residency.

Bloodied ‘Pretty Little Liars’ star Keegan Allen robbed at gunpoint, knifepoint in attack outside luxury Hollywood grocery store

“Pretty Little Liars” star Keegan Allen was robbed at gunpoint and knifepoint on Thursday night — later calling it proof that “West Hollywood is not safe anymore.”

Allen, 37, was left bloodied after two masked men threatened to kill the actor and attacked him for his watch outside of the high-end Laurel Supply grocery store .

“These two dudes hit me in the head and pointed a gun at me with a knife and then took off,” Allen said on Instagram moments after the ambush. “They had masks on and took my watch. They took my watch. Dammit.”

Security footage of the robbery shows the two masked men approach Allen, who was seemingly putting items into his truck’s rear passenger side in the store’s parking lot.

One suspected robber struck Allen in the head multiple times with a gun while the other held the “Walker” actor at knifepoint.

The brazen duo fled once they snatched only Allen’s watch and allowed him to keep a bracelet and a ring as he showed off his bloodied arm.

Allen said in Instagram comments that he went to the hospital after the attack but vowed he would be “OK.” He added that he suspected he had a concussion, saying he is “def concussed.”

Page Six has reached out to Allen’s rep and the LAPD for comment on the incident.

Allen also seemingly called out Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom over crime in the city.

“Will update more soon. Let’s hope all these flock cameras that (Karen Bass), (Gavin Newsom) and everyone thinks will stop crime can find these very dangerous criminals. God bless,” Allen wrote.

West Hollywood has 39 Flock Safety license plate readers and six installed live-video cameras, out of 54 approved, according to a city report . The cameras are designed to help cops track suspects and solve crimes.

The cameras have recently fueled fears that surveillance data could be shared with ICE to help track down illegal immigrants.

Allen is best known for playing Toby Cavanaugh on “Pretty Little Liars” from 2010 to 2017. He later starred as Liam Walker on the drama “Walker” from 2021 to 2024.

He most recently appeared in an episode of “The Rookie” this year.

BBC Sport's Fantasy Premier Leagueexpert Pras gives his answers to some of the biggest dilemmas facing managers heading into gameweek six.

What should I do with Joao Pedro?

Despite being the most sold player of the international break, Chelsea forward Pedro is still owned by about 65% of FPL managers. From a points-per-million point of view he remains one of the best picks in the game, and Chelsea's fixture run is excellent for a long stretch. Unless manager Xabi Alonso rules him out completely, I would hold and use the bench.

Who should I captain this week?

This is a tough week for captaincy. Erling Haaland is away at Liverpool. Cole Palmer is home to Bournemouth. Bukayo Saka has the Saturday lunchtime kick-off at home to Leeds. Bruno Fernandes is at home to Spurs.

Fernandes has the best fixture and the best chance of a big score, but not many own him. Of the rest, you can talk me into any of them. I am leaning safe and sticking with Haaland. Even in a tougher game, if Man City score he should be the one involved.

If I wanted to be different, I would look at Saka or Palmer, both at home. What puts me off Saka is the possible Havertz injury that will impact their attack, plus an early kick-off straight after a long break. What puts me off Palmer is Joao Pedro. If he is not fit, the Chelsea attack suffers, as we saw in gameweek five against Brentford.

Is it too late to buy Ezri Konsa?

For a new buy, yes. The Arsenal defender has a slight niggle from the England camp. Cristhian Mosquera is fit, and William Saliba is on the mend as well, albeit with an unclear timescale for his return. I would not sell him if I already owned him though - he still represents excellent value.

On a wildcard, or with a free transfer though, there are better defenders in the £5m price bracket, in my opinion.

Any Fulham picks worth looking at?

Fulham play all three promoted sides in the next three games. Gonzalo Garcia at £6m is the one I like. He may be on penalties, and the underlying numbers have been better than the FPL returns suggest. Josh King is the other option. His data (0.44 xGI) is strong and the minutes have been good with 90 minutes in three of the first five games.

Is Dominik Szoboszlai a sell?

Not an urgent sell, although there are concerns there from an FPL point of view with his role.

Under Andoni Iraola he is playing as an eight, not as a 10, and not at right-back. That is the worst of the three for route to points. No real attacking threat from the 10 spot, no defensive contribution from full-back. What is left is set pieces and the odd shot from outside the box. I would not rush him out though.

Is Pascal Gross a must-buy?

Close to it, at the price. The Brighton midfielder is still under £6m, he plays 90 minutes, and 47 points already explains why he is the most-transferred player this week.

Ownership is about 30%. Sunderland away, then Crystal Palace at home, is a decent run of fixtures. He is just an easy set-and-forget midfielder who keeps playing 90 minutes and keeps trickling points in.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A'ja Wilson fine-tunes her shooting touch following every practice. That little bit of extra work has defined her greatness since being drafted first overall in 2018.

On Thursday, she received a voice message from former Vice President Kamala Harris congratulating her on redefining greatness leaguewide after she was named WNBA MVP for a third straight year and for the fifth time overall.

“Obviously, that is an honor,” Wilson said. “A woman of our history, and I'm so appreciative to be able to share that moment with her through the phone call and the message of her delivering that I won my fifth MVP.”

In addition to becoming the first player to three-peat, Wilson won the award in 2020 and 2022.

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, Aces owner Mark Davis and team president Nikki Fargas accompanied Wilson's mother, Eva, who presented her daughter with the trophy.

“Each one of these has not been taken lightly,” Wilson said, flanked by all five of her MVP trophies. “In my heart, they've always been so special. But this one here, I cried a little bit harder. This one here is just a little bit different, and whatever that may look like, or whatever that may feel, my fifth one, I think, is one that's just ... when you dream as a young girl, your dream so big and you write your goals out, and you just never imagine that you were able to just check them off.

“And when you’re able to check them off — small wins, big wins — it truly means a lot. And so I think that's why I cried a little bit harder on this one, because 15-year-old A'ja wasn't sitting up here dreaming about being a five-time MVP. She wasn't dreaming about being a three-time champion. She was dreaming about surviving this world.”

The 30-year-old Wilson once again led the league in scoring (26.2) while shooting nearly 53% from the field. She averaged 9.4 rebounds, a career-best 3.2 assists and 1.9 blocks.

Wilson has the defending champion Aces back in the WNBA semifinals for the eighth consecutive season, although Las Vegas is down 2-0 in the best-of-five series against Golden State. Game 3 is Friday.

“This is great, I love it, not going to take for granted, shine her up, let's do it,” Wilson said. “But tomorrow, when it comes to hoisting it in front of the fans, I love the fans ... but I doubt I will be doing that. I'll be warming up with my team. ... Everyone in this room knows the competitor that I am. Everyone knows what my main focus is, and that is to get a game.”

Wilson received 65 first-place votes and nine second-place votes for a total of 713 points from a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Minnesota’s Olivia Miles received six first-place votes and 40 second-place votes (442 points), while Indiana guards Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark followed with 287 and 212 points, respectively.

No WNBA player besides Wilson has more than three MVPs, with Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Lauren Jackson each having a trio. On the NBA side, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had six and Michael Jordan and Bill Russell each had five.

“A’ja Wilson is one of one,” Fargas said. “She’s now standing in a category that no other WNBA player in the history of the league has accomplished. She’s in the conversations with the Michael Jordans and the Wayne Gretzkys of the world — where she belongs.”

Spencer Grammer shared that she lost feeling in her right hand after being stabbed in 2020.

The Greek alum shared that she has “never gotten the full feeling back.”

She began playing the guitar as a way to improve mobility, which led her to starting the musical duo Belle and Chain.

Spencer Grammer, the eldest daughter of Kelsey Grammer, is recounting the moment she was stabbed in New York City.

The Greek alum, 42, was stabbed through the hand while trying to break up a fight between her friend and a drunk man with a knife. The incident caused her to lose feeling in her right hand and the effects have lingered to this day.

“I really have never gotten full feeling back,” Spencer told PEOPLE in an interview published on Tuesday. “It’s about a 20% chance that you will when you have a severe nerve injury.”

As part of her recovery, her doctor encouraged her to pick up an instrument in order to improve her mobility. She chose the guitar and is now pursuing a new career in music with her new country duo Belle and Chain. Although she’s been an actress for years, beginning with her first appearance on Cheers as a child in 1992, she’s excited to pursue a different creative outlet.

“More doors have opened for me playing music than it has been for acting for a while. I don’t know if that’s just because I started to change over time,” she said. “I think when you suffer a pretty traumatic event ... it definitely changed me as a person and music became more aligned with my soul, in a way.”

The stabbing occurred while Grammer and her friend were outside of a restaurant in the East Village. The Rick and Morty actress later said she should not have gotten involved, but she wanted to help “alleviate” the situation.

“I honestly shouldn’t have tried to help,” she told PEOPLE in 2022. “But there wasn’t a knife involved to begin with. It was like any normal fight, basically.”

Grammer didn’t realize that the man had a knife and had shared that the assailant was never found. The experience illuminated how quickly an altercation can escalate and become a life-changing event. For the first six months after the incident, she said her son Emmett, 14, had to help her tie her shoes because her injury prevented her from doing so.

“I know that within five minutes your whole life can change, so it’s better to be safe than sorry,” she said.

Warren Buffett built Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio around the idea of holding on to blue chip stocks for decades.

The S&P 500 Shiller CAPE ratio is at its highest level since the dot-com boom and its second-highest reading in 155 years.

Despite a pricey market, investors are best off holding quality businesses through temporary volatility.

Warren Buffett did not become the face of the stock market by accident. Between 1965 and 2025, Berkshire Hathaway, the company he once led, compounded at about 19.7% a year. The S&P 500(SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), with dividends included, managed a 10.5% return.

This gap might look moderst on paper, but in terms of absolute dollars, it's enormous. When a person with Buffett's track record talks about the market, it is usually worth putting the phone down and listening.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

During a recent sit-down with CNBC's Becky Quick, Buffett put it bluntly: "It's tough to find values when everybody is preferring gambling." The Oracle of Omaha has been circling the same idea for months, calling the market a church with a casino attached and saying he has never seen people in more of a gambling mood.

Buffett might be right. Prices look stretched, short-term trading is everywhere, and a lot of money is tied up chasing stories instead of businesses.

How does Warren Buffett think about a business?

Buffett invests in companies that can earn more than they spend for a long time. That is why he spends so much time talking about economic moats and competitive advantages.

A moat is what prevents rivals from stealing customers -- brand, scale, switching costs, or a network that gets stronger as more people use it. These advantages generate durable cash flow that companies can use to pay dividends, buy back stock, or reinvest in the business. Over decades, that compounding does the heavy lifting for your portfolio.

Buffett is also a contrarian by nature. He likes to buy stocks when everyone else is bored or scared, not when the story already dominates every homepage. This is why Berkshire Hathaway stayed relatively shy of the artificial intelligence (AI) trade for so long. The frenzy drove up valuations. It wasn't until about a year ago that Berkshire initiated a position in Alphabet.

Image source: The Motley Fool. The CAPE ratio is flashing yellow

The cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio, or Shiller CAPE ratio, divides the S&P 500's price by 10 years of inflation-adjusted earnings. The idea is to smooth out boom-and-bust profits so investors are not fooled by one great year or a down year.

Using 155 years of stock market data, economists found that the CAPE ratio has averaged 17.8 over the long run. Right now, it sits at about 41. This is well within shouting distance of the all-time high reading of about 44 during the peak of the dot-com bubble in 2000.

S&P 500 Shiller CAPE Ratio data by YCharts

Does this mean the AI revolution is destined to pop, as famous dot-com cautionary tales like Pets.com did? Not necessarily.

In 2000, many internet companies lacked earnings and did not have a concrete path to generate any cash flow. Today, the largest AI giants -- Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, Broadcom, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing -- actually print cash, own real infrastructure, and sell everyday products and services people already use.

A high CAPE ratio still matters in the sense that it usually acts as a signal that future returns probably will be more modest in the future. This means the CAPE's current reading could be more of a warning about valuation rather than a countdown to the next crash. Expensive markets can stay expensive for a long time while cheap markets can get cheaper. The CAPE ratio is best used to help discern the next few years rather than the next few weeks.

Stay invested, and don't try to be a hero

So should investors flee the stock market right now? Buffett's most obvious rule says "absolutely not."

Buffett spent decades arguing that market timing is a fool's errand. This means investors should not cash out just because stocks look frothy and then wait around for a crash that may take years to arrive -- or never materialize the way you pictured. The cost of being out of the market on its best days will all add up to more than any temporary losses you might experience during a slump.

The best move is the boring one Buffett practiced for 60 years: Own businesses that can compound through cycles and look for economic moats, quality management teams, and durable cash flow that can be returned to shareholders or reinvested. If you hold on to these positions long enough -- so that a few bad years do not define the overall result -- time will work in your favor just as it did for Buffett.

A doctor who had no formal sporting experience is preparing to represent Great Britain in triathlon in a series of international events.

Dr Gail Dovey-Pearce, 54, from Northumberland, is the head of clinical health psychology at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and only began competing in triathlons about a decade ago.

The mother-of-two signed up for her first race just for fun and had to borrow a wet suit and bike to get to the start line.

But in June Dovey-Pearce represented her country at the Age Group European Sprint Triathlon Championships in Spain and has been selected for the European and World Championships in 2027.

On crossing the finish line at her first ever race she said: "Almost instantly something said to me that I would like to do this again.

"So I just carried on doing it, very patiently, fitting around all the other things that I was doing in my life at that point, including work in the trust and being a mother to two young boys."

Dovey-Pearce hopes to inspire women to try new things later in life

About four years ago she decided to find a way to ramp up her training.

"It's a balancing act and I need to take purposeful decisions every day about how to use the available time I have," she said.

"I have to just be flexible and use the time I've got."

Dovey-Pearce said she knows it can be intimidating for women to pick up new sports later in life, but claims "triathlon is a very inclusive community".

"I think it's really important for women to be able to learn new things about themselves and their bodies and put themselves in situations that aren't necessarily designed for them.

"Competitive sport tends to be a male-dominated set-up.

"I hope my story shows that, for women, even later in life it is possible to learn new things."

Dovey-Pearce will be competing again at the Age Group European Sprint Triathlon Championships next June in Austria and then at the world championships in September in Germany.

She said: "I'm a little but overwhelmed but really excited.

"[I'm] just really proud of myself, but also really proud to be telling this story now because I kept it secret for a number of years."

TOKYO, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Japan's core consumer inflation held steady near the central bank's 2% target in August, data showed on Friday, highlighting mounting price pressures that solidify the case for a near-term interest rate hike.

The data came hours before the Bank of Japan concludes its two-day meeting later on Friday, when it is widely expected to raise interest rates to a 31-year high of 1.25%.

The core consumer price index (CPI), which excludes volatile fresh food but includes fuel costs, rose 1.7% in August from a year earlier, data showed, compared with a median market forecast for a 1.8% gain. It followed a 1.8% rise in July.

An index that strips away the effects of both volatile fresh food and fuel, which is closely watched by the BOJ as a better gauge of demand-driven price pressures, rose 1.9% in August from a year earlier.

Core inflation has stayed below the BOJ's 2% target for eight straight months, as government subsidies aimed at curbing utility bills offset price hikes for a broad range of goods.

But rising fuel costs from the Middle East conflict and higher import prices from a weak yen have added price pressure to the economy, prodding warnings from the BOJ of the risk of an inflation overshoot.

The BOJ raised interest rates to 1% in June on the view Japan was on the cusp of durably hitting its 2% inflation target. It kept rates steady in July but signalled a strong chance of a near-term hike on mounting price pressures.

Sources have told Reuters the BOJ is set to raise interest rates this week and may signal faster future tightening if price pressures heighten the chance of underlying inflation deviating from its 2% target.

Analysts polled by Reuters expect the BOJ to hike rates to 1.25% on Friday, 1.5% by end-March next year and then to 1.75% in the second quarter of 2027.

A sizable new program with an existing business partner was the news that put acceleration into Lucid Group's (NASDAQ: LCID) shares on Thursday. Investors piled into the electric vehicle (EV) maker's equity, sending it up almost 6% that trading session.

A major potential deployment

Lucid and that partner, European rideshare company Bolt, announced they are launching a combined effort to deploy a minimum of 25,000 fully autonomous vehicles made by Lucid in that continent and the Middle East. This is part of a broader aim for Bolt to have 100,000 such autos on its platform by 2035, a very ambitious goal by any standard.

This would represent a major expansion of the two companies' existing partnership, which has been limited to deploying Lucid's relatively high-end EV models for Bolt's ridesharing services in Saudi Arabia.

In a press release on the arrangement, Lucid quoted its CEO, Silvio Napoli, as saying that "shared autonomous mobility offers the perfect opportunity to extend our unique technology beyond consumer vehicles."

He added that "together we will deliver an exceptional customer experience."

First things first

The financial details and other key terms of the new Lucid/Bolt partnership weren't disclosed in the press release.

While it's potentially quite the business booster for both companies, especially Lucid, we should bear in mind that the world remains quite some distance from Level 5 (i.e., fully autonomous) vehicle operation. If I were a Lucid shareholder, I'd be more encouraged by the advancements the company and its technical partners make that push it closer to 100% self-driving.

NEW YORK (AP) — Zxavian Harris and Dae’Quan Wright are ineligible to join any NFL teams this season after they attempted to return to college and play for LSU, the league said in a memo sent to each NFL team.

Harris was a defensive tackle and Wright played tight end for Mississippi during its run to a College Football Playoff semifinal last season. Both had tryouts in the NFL this summer after going undrafted. They then tried joining former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin at LSU and sued for the right to regain their college eligibility.

After the Southeastern Conference passed a rule barring pros from heading back to college to play and a Louisiana court put that restriction on hold, LSU left both players off its roster as it opened its season.

The NFL’s letter noted both Harris and Wright “were eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft, returned to college and participated with their college football team after the opening of NFL training camp, and therefore, they are ineligible to visit, try out with or be signed by NFL clubs during the 2026 season.”

The obtained a copy of the memo, which was dated Wednesday.

Harris and Wright were the only players mentioned in the letter. The NFL acknowledged this list didn’t include all 2026 draft-eligible players who returned to college and said teams should contact the league’s player personnel department with any questions about a player’s eligibility.

The letter also noted it is each team’s responsibility to verify a player’s eligibility. Discipline for eligibility violations can include fines and/or the loss of draft picks.

The action could halt production at the factory supplying grain spirit for Diageo’s top whisky brands - Andrew Milligan/PA

Supplies of Johnnie Walker and Bell’s whisky face disruption as more than 100 workers at Diageo’s biggest Scottish distillery prepare to go on strike.

Workers at Cameronbridge, Europe’s largest grain distillery, will walk out from Sept 28 for three weeks in a dispute over plans to cut 10 jobs at the site.

The action threatens to bring production to a halt at the factory, which makes the grain spirit used in blends for some of Diageo’s best-known whiskies, including Johnnie Walker, Bell’s and Haig.

It marks the first bout of strike action since Sir Dave Lewis announced a sweeping cost-cutting drive at the drinks giant.

The former Tesco boss, nicknamed “Drastic Dave” for his aggressive approach to cutting costs, took over as Diageo’s chief executive in January and is targeting $1bn (£750m) of savings.

Sir Dave Lewis has been nicknamed ‘Drastic Dave’ for his aggressive approach to cutting costs - PA

He has overseen a sharp reduction in the company’s workforce.

Diageo employed 27,938 people at the end of June, down by almost 2,000 from a year earlier, while it spent $514m on redundancy payments.

Unite, the union overseeing the strike, accused Diageo of failing to consult workers properly and said it had provided little detail about the proposed cuts.

Sharon Graham, the union’s general secretary, said: “There is no justification for slashing hundreds of jobs across its operations when it is raking in hundreds of millions of profit.”

The union has also raised safety concerns if jobs were removed without a corresponding reduction in production.

Diageo said the Cameronbridge dispute was limited to 10 roles, with eight people affected because two of the positions are vacant.

A spokesman said the cuts were necessary because the company had reduced production at the distillery and expected to maintain lower levels of grain distillation “over the next few years”.

The company said it had alternative roles available for affected workers and remained in talks with Unite and GMB Scotland.

Diageo has about 3,000 employees at distilleries and bottling plants across Scotland. Production has also been paused at several other sites as the company reduces output to bring whisky stocks into balance with demand.

The cuts come as Sir Dave attempts to redirect spending towards parts of the business that are growing faster.

He has pledged to spend $1bn expanding Guinness production, after sales of the stout rose 12pc last year. Diageo has said the wider cost-cutting programme will fund the investment.

The company’s latest results in August showed the scale of the challenge facing Lewis, with revenue falling 3pc to $19.6bn and operating profit dropping 27pc to $3.2bn.

Sir Dave has blamed some of the weakness in Diageo’s spirits brands on prices being pushed too high after the pandemic.

He said last month that pricing had “got a little bit out of whack” and that cutting prices on brands including Bell’s whisky had already prompted a recovery in sales volumes.

A Diageo spokesman said: “We are disappointed by the decision to strike. The proposal to remove up to 10 roles at Cameronbridge Distillery is necessary as we maintain reduced production volumes to protect the long-term competitiveness of our business. We remain committed to engaging constructively.”

Football still reigns supreme as the most popular sport in the U.S., but its grip might be loosening.

Gallup recently released results of its long-running poll tracking Americans’ favorite sports to watch, and football came out well ahead of every other sport.

The poll, which was taken over Aug. 3-24, found that 31% of Americans say football is their favorite sport, 20 percentage points higher than any other sport.

The next tier, however, is much tighter.

Out of those surveyed, 11% picked basketball as their favorite sport, while 10% went with baseball and 9% chose soccer.

It’s an all-time high for soccer’s popularity in the U.S., which previously had never registered higher than 7%. As recently as 2007 the sport picked up just 2% of responses. Now soccer is nearly tied with two pillars of North American professional sports.

It still pales in comparison to football, though, which may be in a more precarious position than its lead suggests.

The 31% figure is, in fact, the lowest share of responses for football since 2001, when 28% picked the sport as their favorite. That year, basketball surged to a 16% share, its second highest ever, and 6% picked auto racing, an all-time high for the sport.

This year, football’s share is also 10 points below the last Gallup poll in 2023, when 41% favored the sport.

It’s also notable that this year’s share is football’s fourth lowest in the 24 polls since the sport took over the most popular sports crown from baseball in 1972.

Football’s popularity, however, requires context.

The latest edition of the poll was run in August, prior to the start of football season. Based on Gallup’s own numbers, football performs worse in the poll when it takes place outside of football season.

Since 1972, football has averaged a 38% share during the season. Meanwhile, that share dips to 32% outside of the sport’s fall season. That suggests the timing of the poll may explain part of football’s 10-point drop.

Still, this year’s 31% number is lower than the out-of-season average.

Additionally, the poll is simply asking respondents for their favorite sport to watch. That means even if fewer Americans now rank football first, they may still be tuning into games.

Indeed, 16 of the top 25 spots in Nielsen’s live sports telecast rankings for Aug. 31 through Sept. 6 were for Week 1 college football games — and the top telecast was the Wisconsin-Notre Dame tilt at Lambeau Field, which drew 7.4 million viewers.

And so, football still seems quite safe as America’s favorite sport to watch for now — even if the latest poll shows a crack in its once-impregnable lead.

"South Park" is back with a new season and a new name.

The animated series is returning on Sept. 16 after changing its name to "South America." Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced the marketing stunt earlier this month in a jab at President Donald Trump.

"Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of 'South Park' to 'SOUTH AMERICA,'" they said in a Sept. 8 statement.

The move poked fun at Trump signing an executive order ordering his administration to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. Google Maps and Apple Maps both adopted the new name for users in the United States.

The show's two most recent seasons were heavily focused on Trump as a central villain character in a storyline where he is romantically involved with Satan.

How to watch 'South America' AKA 'South Park'

The Emmy-winning series premieres on Comedy Central and can be streamed next day on Paramount+.

The streaming service has monthly or annual subscription plans to choose from. Its Essential plan, which includes ads, costs $8.99 per month or $89.99 for the year. The Premium plan, which does not have ads, is $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year.

Why did 'South Park' change its name to 'South America'?

"South Park" changed its name to "South America" in a marketing stunt inspired by similar orders from Trump.

The president has signed directives to change the names of geographic areas including the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America and, more recently, Lake Ontario to Lake of America. He has also floated the prospect of pushing to rename New Mexico to "New America."

The creators of "South Park" have long used the show to poke fun at the president and his policies.

Earlier this month, after winning an Emmy Award for outstanding animated program, the show's official Instagram account posted a photo of an animated character with Trump's face on it.

The character appears with his pants down, holding an Emmy along with the text, "You finally got your Emmy." Trump has previously complained about never winning an Emmy for his NBC series "The Apprentice," which was nominated eight times throughout its run.

Tiger Woods was seen practicing his tee shots on Tuesday morning at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey.

Footage of the session shared online has raised questions regarding a potential return to professional competition, though Woods has made no commitment to coming back.

The 15-time major champion is in the state ahead of The Nexus Cup, an exclusive amateur team tournament he hosts to raise funds for his TGR Foundation. As part of the event, he conducted a clinic on Tuesday.

While speaking to spectators who gathered for instruction, Woods addressed a query about the state of his game, which has been hampered by medical and legal complications.

"I can hit pretty much anything," he said.

The appearance follows nearly two weeks after a hearing at the Martin County Courthouse in Martin, Fla., where Woods pleaded no contest to willful, wanton and reckless driving and refusing to submit to a urine test following a crash on a residential street in Florida back in March.

He had previously entered a written plea of not guilty via his lawyers to charges of driving under the influence, property damage and a refusal to submit to testing.

However, in his court appearance earlier this month, the 50-year-old accepted a $1,000 fine and two concurrent five-year suspensions of his driver's license, leading to the dismissal of a DUI charge.

Woods walked away unhurt from the crash, escaping out of his passenger door, and, while he passed a breathalyzer test for alcohol, he refused to submit to a urinary test for drugs. That refusal earned him an additional $500 fine.

According to the initial police affidavit, Woods was observed by the investigating officers to be “sweating profusely” while acting “lethargic and slow” with eyes that were “bloodshot and glassy”.

Woods has not featured in a major or any competitive golf since 2024.

Injuries have heavily restricted his playing time. He suffered severe lower right leg injuries in a 2021 car crash and has undergone seven back procedures, including an October disk replacement.

He has not won a tournament since before the 2021 crash, with his last victory occurring at the 2019 Zozo Championship.
